  • In June 2017 residents of the Silchester estate woke to discover Grenfell Tower engulfed in flames, witnessing a terrifying national tragedy unfolding on their doorstep.

    The tower bore a striking resemblance to their own. The victims were people they knew, people from all walks of life who, like them, made a home for themselves high up above the clamour of the city. Faced with an uncertain future, the residents of the tower next door are fighting to rebuild their community, and their place within it

    Of the people who perished in the fire; I don’t care how they came to England, who they were, or if they were here illegally or not. They were human beings who died in the most horrifying way. They had families, children, pets, loves and hates and ambitions as we all do.
    They were terrified and trapped and in mortal agony.
    May they rest in peace and may God, or Allah or whoever they pray to give their family and friends the peace they deserve.

      If we just talking about this tragedy, as you can see there is more sickening things going on even before the grenfell fire. A kid fell out of his window opposite grenfell tower and the council didn't do anything ? somethings not going right in this area, god knows what else is been going on that we dont know. apparently there werent even that much people that survived the fire, their all dead, thats why the death toll is over 400+. These people are speaking the truth, can you say their not ? I really would like you to meet these people and say it to their face, see what reaction you get.

      it is the case highly probably everywhere in this planet and it could vary according to local features. I live in the parisian suburbs area and it's the same in France. The clivage is getting stronger when the rich are richer, the poor are poorer and in between it moves from side to side. What strikes me the most is that England or France are rich countries but badly run by selfish people who only think about themselves instead of sharing more and avoid clashes, civil wars and tensions.... developed countries ??? joke !

    • @GreatSageSunWukong
      @GreatSageSunWukong 5 лет назад +42

      I can fully believe it, there was a fire at my building and the police and fire brigade just left after, they vanished me and my child were left there alone with a soaking wet home with no power at 23.30 on a Friday night, as they had kicked all the doors in to check the flats they just left next door open as they were on holiday, this wasn't council btw it was private flats. No one cares in this country.

    • @beenaplumber8379
      @beenaplumber8379 5 лет назад +2

      @@GreatSageSunWukong I mean this respectfully, but who should be responsible for the clean-up? I can only tell you that in the US, if our building burned down, the insurance companies would make those arrangements with a private clean-up and/or demolition contractor. It's the property owner's responsibility, but the insurance company (insurance is mandatory for building owners) takes care of everything because they know the contractors who do reliable work for a negotiated price.
      So if this was the US, the building owner (RBKC) would task their contracted building managers (TMO) to contract a cleaner or make an insurance claim (which they must have done for the boy who died, right?) which includes clean-up. It all stays in the private sector once police and fire are done with the emergency. But RBKC is obviously not a private owner, and they obviously have severely neglected these buildings for decades. Are there UK-wide or European authorities that they are accountable to?

    • @GreatSageSunWukong
      @GreatSageSunWukong 5 лет назад +23

      Beena Plumber right theres a few points here I want to address first up the rest of the civilised world thinks your country is cruel and horrible, in similar cultures we expect to get returns from paying tax, we pay tax to the government in return it looks after us putting that tax back into health care free at the point of service, money to the unemployed so they don't end up homeless, state pension to provide for the people after retirement, as well as more basic but equally important things like street cleaning and lighting, rubbish collection.
      We don't understand what you Americans are paying taxes for when your country gives you nothing, we were shocked at horricane Catrina as we have a tax pot called the emergency relief fund to help people in the event of a natural disaster mainly flooding here, where as in your country you did nothing and to us thats shameful that a country didn't help its citizens to rebuild and the government should be ashamed when pictures of homes still damaged from something that happened years ago can be seen.
      We do have insurance in this country but the owners are only responsible for repairing the building you need your own insurance to cover content, if you are made homeless the building owner has a duity to house you or pay you back your rent for the duration of time you can't live in your home.
      This building Grenfell was a council building that means it belongs to the local state and is rented out to poor tenants for less then the average private rent in the area, also a building must pass legislation that it is fit for human habitation which Grenfell clearly wasn't as they used the wrong cladding for that kind of structure thus the council failed and is liable, each council in this country has to house poor people social housing as part of their agreement with central government to receive money in addition to local council taxes.
      The police and fire services etc are public servants cleaning up the splat is something expected of them normally the fire services, citizens shouldn't be doing it, and in my case the police leaving a neighbours door open when the neighbour was on holiday is a neglection of duty, as they are there to protect citizens and property. Technically we are subjects not citizens btw but I decided to use the word citizen as its more widely understood.
      Oh and the council's have outsourced running of buildings to the private sector but the final control and decisions on things fall on the council, the contractors just do the work on the ground, thats another story really as its more expensive then if the council did things themselves and is all just another way people in power siphon off public money into private business they have shares or personal interest in such as the company belonging to relieves.

You’ll feel much better about yourself, u promise. It’s your job to feed and clothe yourself. It’s your job to feed and clothe your children. Nahid is correct: It is dystopian for a fire with such catastrophic loss of life to occur in this day and age. It’s the result of our culture of placing profits before people. The NYT did an article suggesting high rise buildings with such poor fire evacuation, lack of stairwells, flammable cladding, etc., such as Grenfell, would never be approved for construction in New York City. I find that surprising given the overwhelming graft in the building industry. Incredibly tragic. It’s been five years and my heart still breaks for the victims, their families, and, now, these people, housed in similar construction, with burned-out tower looming over their neighborhood. So tragic on so many levels.

      The stay put policy would have worked if not for the flammable cladding.
      What is bizarre to me is that even though the emergency workers first on scene could see that the fire was behaving very abnormally by speeding up several flats on the outside, and not contained as it should have, they still decided to follow the stay put policy and make people stay in their flats. Poor residents called for help but were advised up till the last minute to stay put.

    • @Gencturk92
      @Gencturk92 5 лет назад +8

      this is why you shouldn't rely on emergency services in UK too much, I didnt even see anything major to even stop this inferno. All we saw was two firemens shooting water with their water hoses on the ladders that couldnt even reach half way to the building. I can do that aswell, you dont have to be a fire brigade to hold a water hose and spray water. Ever since 911 and especially grenfell tower, I came to the conlusion: when your life is in danger, just get the fuck out of the building ASAP and listen to anyone.

    How can a tower block be given a life span of just 20 years??
    That's like saying a home we built 1999 needs to be torn down next year ??

    • @Gencturk92
      @Gencturk92 5 лет назад +7

      The building was built in 1974 and its in the richest area of UK, London and Europe. The council were making plans to regenerate the area, demolish the blocks and rebuild new homes for wealthy people, but because there were too many tenants in the building, it would be hard to move everyone out and find new homes for them, it could take time. They instead to keep the block and regenerate it, put a flammable cladding on the facade to not make it look like an eyesore to the richer people coming in. Prior to this, residents have made blogs and posted it to the KCTMO website regarding fire safety issues in the building that if there was a fire, people would be trapped and could die. The council ignored these advises by residents from Grenfell tower and accused them of "defamatory behaviour" and "harassment". In the blog post, they warned that "only a catastrophic event" would "expose the ineptitude and incompetence of [KCTMO]" and "bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation" at the building", adding, "[We] predict that it won't be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They can't say that they haven't been warned!"

      the buildings not 20 years old, it was built in 1974, but plans were to get rid of these social houses and re build new homes for wealthy people in the richest area of London.

      I'm agreeing with you.

    • @Gencturk92
      @Gencturk92 5 лет назад +1

      There are many high rise buildings built even before the 70's in UK, but never came across with anything about it being 20 years duration. If we talking about grenfell tower, because it was in the richest area of London and UK, they didnt want social houses and immigrants flooded in the area. They did move foreigners in the area to the west of London, they even sent letters to residents in grenfell tower about it but due to the amount of people in there, it would have been impossible to house everyone where they wanted them. This was social cleansing: to divide the poor and rich in the richest area of the city
