  • Diagnosing the Prius Rattle and Hybrid System Warning symptoms: is my head gasket bad? After taking care of the Prius EGR, EGR cooler, and intake manifold, I got a water pump code and more. What else can go wrong?!

whatever you do Don't use headgasket chemicals

Agreed. They can work, but can cause a ton of issues when they block off water passages.

Good call on the head gasket change. I cringed a little regarding the little things I saw in that video. Though great job anyways. I'm planning on having to do the same, though appears my head gasket hasn't failed or gotten that bad yet. Everything appears to be water condensation related either humid days with cool nights and in the morning, the cold weather rattle and vibration that used to be more common when seemed I didn't have the oil level checked routinely and finally the PCV Valve shot and I overfill the engine oil and parked on an inclined latest incident when oddly happened after I ran a bottle of Techron in a full rank then filled up the tank for the first time afterwards with only fuel. I made some bad videos regarding what I found, though cleanup up to the inside of the EGR Valve and really need to next thoroughly clean the rest of the EGR Valve and Cooler circuit. So far only still getting the low speed then slowly accelerate after running the AC much less rattle in Eco Mode. I thought that was the PCV Valve or EGR circuit from what I read. Though at 282K miles, might be time for some more engine tune up maintenance. I also notice a slight vibration when running AC full blast.

Hey thanks! Also: that’s interesting you’re getting less rattle in eco mode; I’m not sure why that would be…
If you don’t notice your car using any coolant, then I wouldn’t be too worried about a head gasket. But, the EGR cooler, valve, tub, and intake could need a thorough cleaning.

@@LoganDidItYT Actually, the little rattle isn't exactly the death rattle like vibration with rattle during startup when cold and what later I guess was low oil since seemed to be the common denominator along with cooler times when the dew point must have been just right to condense a little water inside.
The less rattle is like a quieter rattle that's only in Eco mode when I'm just starting off at low speed and am accelerating in some range that's not to fast and not to slow. I'm guessing something with air restriction due to EGR Valve air ratio and or EGR Cooler obstructed. Gasket Masters noted can be PCV Valve as well, though I did replace with Toyota brand and a clean PCV Valve hose as well as cleaned the intake manifold. I also cleaned the EGR Tube and up inside the bottom of the EGR Valve, though not as thorough as a complete dissasembly to check for the aka ski rutt in the plastic cover and unrestricted motion of the EGR actual valve itself.
Thanks for the affirmation and if you search my channel for prius videos I have a few related to what mine looked like, albeit I tend to muse and not really do much other than impromtu fyi videos and reminders for me if I dont see elsewhere on the net.

I removed the thermostat, flushed the system & used a product called Moroso Ceramic seal on my 2011 Prius, It’s been working for the last 46k miles

Sealers do work, just be careful about coolant passages in the head itself. That’s really the only concern. I’m glad yours is fixed!

Water pumps (the external pumps) are pretty common to fail. Pretty straightforward job on the Gen 2 Prius. Not sure about the Gen 3 Prius.
I was REALLY trying not to suggest a blown head gasket early on. I wanted you to thrive and not have that in the back of your mind during your troubleshooting process.
That being said, I just recently dealt with my buddies 2015 Prius having the rattling and so I first replaced the plugs and it stopped for about two weeks. Then it started rattling again, so I replaced the specific coil packs (2 of them) on the cylinders that were misfiring. Again it was good for over a month.
However ultimately it came down to having a blown head gasket. He sold it. It did have 219k miles on it. These engines can develop HG issues unfortunately.
Sorry for the novel ^ but now that it’s over, how about a beer?

I could use one, haha. Maybe it’s just my car, but it seems like it’s a real chain reaction once something goes on these cars.

@@LoganDidItYT it’s all of them. The best thing for these cars is to just drive them. Drive them often and they usually last awhile. However when things start going wrong, it’s often an avalanche of problems.

Ok so now that I had time to watch the entire video, you are certainly on to something with the blown Head gasket. That oil definitely looks like it has coolant in it and the copious amounts of white smoke you speak of are backing that though up also.
There would explain the misfires as well. Or at least adding to the proof misfiring. I would say that you have a tough proposition on your hands. If you are able to use another vehicle to drive to work then you might be able to do the head gasket. However that is definitely a hard job.

What you do is to STOP being a woosie and fix the head gasket! You are supposed to be a mechanic. So act like one that knows what he is doing. Also NEVER use engine sealing goop in an engine. That stuff can ruin a car. I also suspect that that is what the last owner of that car did to the engine and the goop has failed suddenly on you.
Man up dude! Fix the head gasket right! Maybe it will cost you 600 in parts but in the end the engine will be done. 128k is far too low in miles to trash that car!
