*Remember, this Toyota is a Gen III Prius or 3rd Generation Prius. If you're having PCV error codes and other problems like error codes P0401 P0171 P3190 & P0441 its because oil and sludge get trapped in the intake manifold! This is typical with a Gen 3 Prius V. We will also give you a glimpse at Toyota EGR Diagnosis Tips and Repair Tips because I'm sure you've heard from Toyota master diagnostic technicians that Toyota EGR diagnosis for models equipped with the latest generation EGR can be important. Toyota Prius Engine Knocking and Rattling? Yep! This will help! And if you've got a Shaking and knocking prius every morning, this can help tremendously!
PLUS, this video actually covers a little Joe Rogan philosophy, and a few things the Prius gang leader at NutzAboutBolts doesn't cover. I love them fellers, but sheesh!

Best video ever with clear descriptions. I will not remove the coolant hose and leave it alone. I have 2015 model and not so much gunks after 100k miles. Probably because it does not consume any oil within 5k miles Oil change interval.
Do you have to disconnect the battery first?
Dont lie that no thrue!!!
Literally watched this on the toilet and didnt get up cause it was so engaging. 100% rewatching this when I'm cleaning all this on my 2010 prius at 100k!
Same here. I'm sitting on the toilet too.
It's 4:56 pm on August 16, 2024.
Just got home from work and ran straight to the toilet.
Litterally watching this on the toilet 🤣🤣
me too, rewatched it 3 times on the toilet because im about to start mine later!!
Clearly the best car how to video I have ever seen. Generating a pdf is also next level.
Thank you, sir! I am honored by your compliment because I have seen and admired your knowledge on Prius Chat for a long time. Please be sure to like and share!
Agreed!
100% in agreement with you. Best ever on RUclips. 🙌
Thanks fellas. Your kind words are makin' me blush!
I've watch a lot of DIY car repair videos. This is by far the most entertaining and best, editing wise. Thanks Merv!
Glad you enjoyed it!
100%
This is the best DIY car repair video I have ever seen in my life. The editing, the script, the camera shots. Unbelievable. I feel like my brain was just chauffeured into knowledge city. Thank you for making this.
Wow, thanks! Great to have you as a fan!
The narrator is very funny and smart.
The whole thing was informative and awesome.
Thank you
So nice of you
I don't think I have ever had so much fun, watching a how-to car repair video. Merv is a funny man!
Legitimately the best instructional video ever produced.
Thanks so mucH!
I literally never "like" videos, but you earned this one!
You got it, cowboy.
My 2012 Prius V was shaking when I started it and initially it would only shake at immediate startup but after a while, it just rattled longer so I parked it. Sounded like the engine was coming apart. Then I saw someone online say that when they shifted theirs into neutral, the rattling stopped and it allowed the car to warmup and after that no more rattle. Anyway, that gave me hope the engine might not be destroyed. The auto parts store suggested the code indicated a cylinder 4 misfire so I changed the coils and plugs and still no relief. I saw information online suggesting cleaning or replacing the EGR valve and cooler might resolve it and honestly I was dreading that job because it looked complicated. I found a thread by Catalinux on Priuschat where he had the same issue and changed coils, plugs, and cleaned the EGV valve and cooler and still had the same rattling on startup and then the problem was resolved when he cleaned the intake manifold. Searched youtube and found your video and it made removal and cleaning look really easy so I tried it first. I used brake cleaner, a pressure washer and even a hair dryer. Moment of truth, started the car and no more rattle. Thank you for this entertaining and well-done instructional video.
I'm glad you were able to solve your problem. Sounds like you did a lot of research from a variety of sources. Good for you because that's important! Hope you'll consider smashing the *super thanks* button beneath my video, or maybe visit the Merv's Merch Store to help support the channel. -Merv Himself. STORE: mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/?
If you google oil catch can for the Prius , this will help stop the oil build up , I have not cleaned the intake , all I did was install a baffled oil catch can and no more shaking during startup.
Absolutely best reply ever. And screenshoting it
Great video, humor and a voice that could sell anything from pickups to after-shave.👍👍
My Last name is DeMil. It trips me out every time you say it. PS, I'm going to execute this today with the help of your incredibly well-produced video. Wish me luck.
Thank you, sir! Very high quality production + plenty of wits to keep us entertained throughout. I have a 2nd gen Prius that doesn't have that EGR crap. Still running strong after 300,000 miles.
Right on!
The best one!
Thank you for such a clear and concise how-to! My 3rd gen Prius needed a lot of work including removing and cleaning the air intake manifold, specifically the EGR ports. I didn't have any pcv codes but I went ahead and replaced ithe valve while I was there since it's such an inexpensive part and a pain in the butt to get to. I paid someone to change the EGR less than a year ago because of some shakes/rough idling and that's literally all they did. No cleaning or replacing anything else in the system. I'll be doing my own work from now on. I'm telling everyone I can about your channel and have subscribed.
Thank you again
Awesome! And please check out my store! mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/?
Wow that parts cleaner tip is a real gem! Thank you for that and the rest of the vid! At 150,000 km and zero codes, I reckon this is the time for a preventative air intake cleaning job for me!
Long time pro mechanic. Love your video! Right combination of smarts and humor. Thanks!
Thanks! 👍
Finally have enough space to actually work on the car in the garage! Watched a lot of repair videos for Prius and Tundra - this my favorite. Thanks
I just stumbled upon this video after purchasing a CT200H and subscribed immediately. 👍
Awesome, thank you!
How'd you know I was on the toilet watching this? Just earned my subscription for knowing that!
I don't do any car mechanics but own a prius and watched it all the way through. Nice job! Learned stuff I'll never use but will appreciate the work others do!
He said “we call this - clearing the kids off the street - before you go all Rambo". Hardest I laughed all day.
Love your vids and commentary!
Thanks! This will fix a problem that has been haunting me. Concise and to the point. Much appreciated.
Thank you very kindly! Glad you found it helpful.
This is the next level of howto tutorials. Thanks for your great production!
You're very welcome!
I did the same job, but your demo is way better than all I have seen
Sam Elliot does car maintenance. That voice and accent are perfect!
I also like the way you do voice over, versus just talking while you're working. It leads to a very clean video.
And yes, the PDF takes it to the next level. I will be subbing to this channel.
Glad you enjoyed! Please check out my world famous Merch Store! mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/?
Best videos on YT!! ASMR, Dad jokes and a ton of great tutorials. Tackled the EGR cleaning and air intake cleaning. Not easy but just take your time and follow this fine gentleman’s videos. Good bless you mate. Thank you 🙏
Right on!
Excellent. From the intricate details and comparisons to the soothing deep voice. Almost fell asleep but was quickly re-engaged by the witty banter. Thanks for such a nice and precise video. 5 stars isn't enough. You need a Roku channel and a Netflix special my friend. Keep doing what you're doing.
Thanks again! I'm definitely going to keep plugging away at this. Can't let "the man" keep me down!
Got a subscriber in me, so dang happy I found you in a search...pretty sure I can fall asleep listening to you go over working on cars
Crazy how this doesn't have more views, love this content man!
Appreciate it! Check out my MERCH! mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/?
Till now, the best video explanation ever I see about this topic. I use also diesel fuel for cleaning parts and also when I change oil I fill with diesel over night. makes the differences for gen 2 prius. Thanks a lot.
Glad it helped
Bought the Pdf, its great. Really top notch work! Would be awesome if you cleaned the Egr cooler and valve too. Pls do make a video of that work. Thx you,
On it!
You do a splendid job of explaining yourself. The videos are highlighted very well. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you kindly!
45 seconds in and he called it I'm on the toilet right now! Just got a new subscriber 😂
I don't comment much but this video is so amazing, I had to comment like, subscribe , 5 stars for edit details and now I need to get my hands dirty to clean my Prius. thank you
Thanks for subbing! Welcome aboard!
Thank you. I was reluctant to clean the intake on my 13 ES300h. I assumed the EGR ports were longer and serpentine. Clear explanation and I love the camera work and graphics. Well done!
Glad it helped
This is the best car repair video on RUclips, I have been putting this mantinence item on the back burner but you gave me the motivation to do it
Great to hear!
How'd you make out? I'm fairly handy but this job along with the cleaning the EGR cooler and changing the spark plugs is kind of intimidating. Also debating the oil catch install since it might make me fails emissions testing, would need a way to possibly disconnect it just for the yearly inspection.
Everything worked out well for me. But a person needs to understand that a considerable amount of time will be required to do it right. I don't recommend anyone trying this if they are in a hurry.
Next level editing your video deserves the most
I appreciate that!
@@MervsServiceSecrets gotta give credit where it’s due. If I could give to thumbs up I would.
Thank you !
Your voice it like listening to an old Disney movie. Very informative video. You make me want to go rip apart my 2010 prius and get scrubbing!
The narration voice sounds like a BBQ grilling/smoking channel. So calming. But the other great thing which makes this the best video is your camera shots. You were able to get into areas that others could not do. Well done! Just liked and subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it! Be sure to check out our Merch store too!
Best instructional video out there, made this job less intimidating and much more efficient
Video could not have been better. Outstanding.
Thanks! Please check out my store too! mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/
One of the best car diy RUclips videos ever…. Just read the comments. I have subscribed and look forward to watching your videos.
Thanks for the sub!
One of my favorite videos for this! Amazing commentary and very clearly marked highlights. Thank you! And yes, I was watching this while atop the porcelain throne.
Fantastic video. An updated EGR cooler video, would be incredible. The popular one seems a bit outdated at this point. Pressure washer, and your cleaning techniques would be cool to see. If you get that catch can in, let us know where you put it
There's a great overall catch-can video I did here: ruclips.net/video/9vqBUiDHYC0/видео.html. While it's not specifically for the prius, the general principals covered are pretty universal. I highly recommend it.
I hang them with a re usable zip tie on the back of the high power wire bracket with the dipstick positioned for easy checking.
HEllo ! I've got a prius 2nd gen.,but your video is soo well done that I litereally watched it until the end, by pleasure. Bravo !
Thank you right kindly!
Oh man you have a Jazz voice too, you should play music too, thanks for the video you made for us. Greetings from Italy
Saluti!
Looking forward to doing this maintenance with the help of your video! Kudos for making such a well paced, engaging, and detailed video. As many said here, this is next level work! Keep it up!
Glad to help!
This channel should have 100 million subs!!
Thanks! Please be sure to share our videos with friends, family and highly influential people!
I fall asleep to your beautuful voice, great video need to clean my intake as well.
Thanks!
Thank YOU! Much appreciated!
Thank you sir. The video was fun to watch and information was useful. My 2011 Toyota Prius has the rattling and I plan on tackling this job myself. Although I suspect I might need a head gasket considering little loss of coolant and no leaks found under carriage!
I hope that's not the case, but you could be right about that head gasket. Please keep us updated.
What was it in the end? Similar issue with my 13. I hear changing the plugs and coils should fix her right up
I probably missed your but 2010-2015 Priuses need this done at least every 100k or so?
Especially the EGR valve?
To avoid oil burning and possibly destroying the engine?
Hey Brother. Love you work love your voice love your attitude and heck I look forward to making more money so I can send some more of your way :-) I've got a quarter-million miles on my Prius and some people don't think it's manly but I loved the thing it's my second one and even though I drive diesel trucks and heavy equipment and do high-rise work I somehow I do not feel like a sissy fixing up my Prius at 51 miles per gallon plus I tow it to thousand pound trailer and it only brings me down to 43 Mi a gallon
Dang! A can't imagine a prius towing much more than a Radio Flyer wagon behind it! But I'm damn proud of you, brother! Keep on truckin' !
And thanks for the super thanks. Really appreciate it. If every one of my loyal viewers did that I could afford to make better videos. Thanks again!
In my 2013 prius v 122k I've done the water pump, spark plugs, and coils. It drove fine for 5 min then started to shake and check engine.
Going to do this over the week end.
Good luck!
The best maintanance video i have ever seen!!! Thank you a lot guy!!!
This video has no right to be so damn entertaining and informative 😂😂😂 thanks
Your editing is top notch. Very easy to understand for an idiot like me. Video couldn’t be any more perfect. Thank you!
Excellent, informative video, the graphic outlines really help.
One thing, f you use purple power on the intake, rinse it off REAL good; it’s somewhat caustic, will likely corrode the metal embeds if a trace is left. For insurance, put a little WD40 on every metal bit. Best to just stick with brake cleaner, less of a witches brew to clean up after. Ditto for the (aluminum) EGR valve.
I would reserve Purple Power (and sim caustic cleaners) for use on the EGR cooler, which is stainless steel, and really needs that carbon eating action.
And yeah, heard my name mentioned, LOL! So stoked, I sent a link to my son. He said he could listen to your voice all day. :)
Addendum: a tip for releasing cable clip jaws (from a PriusChat member, don't recall his name, perhaps someone can chime in?), a 10 mm (6 face?) socket, pressed onto the jaws, will often compress them inward enough to release the clip. Probably any tube with 10 mm ID would do the same, say copper/plastic tubing, what have you.
Addendum02: Hope I didn't REALLY come across as "tearing into" nutzaboutbolts, regarding the throttle body coolant hoses. Those guys are heros of third gen Prius maintenance/repairs. Hey nobody bats 100. :)
Thank you for your thoughtful comments and knowledge. You are Prius chat royalty and filled with wisdom. I learn a lot from your posts.
First time seeing your videos and wow what a quality of video with clear explanations.
Welcome aboard!
You have a very soothing voice, I fell asleep 😀, don't worry I watched it again. I use Mr muscle oderless oven clean , works great and doesn't eat aluminium.
Thanks for the tip!
That upper wiring harness clamp would have been less of a giant pain if I had my trim removal tools when I first did this job.. Totally worth the effort to do, just wish the egr valve removal wasn't such a comically ridiculous task. 244k miles and still kicking
Wow that's awesome! I agree with you on the EGR drama too!
Great editing and great humor, thank you for a great DIY car repair video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you thank you thank you! Just completed this thanks to you! I hope this solves the problem. Excellent video. I will confess I did not release the pressure and got a nice golden shower of antifreeze lol
I will let you know if this solved the cold startup shakes
Thanks for watching. Yeah, ya gotta be careful and make sure you clamp things properly.
This is best video about prius EGR cleaning 👍👍👍👍
Glad you think so! Please spread it around.
Very good video. One of the best videos I’ve watched.
Wow, thanks!
You sir, are incredible. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated!
have you ever considered doing the on flight safety video for American Airlines?
love the voice over and how you did your video, thank you!!!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
This is so good. Thank you! Please never stop!
Not only is this video very INFORMATIVE, it's also very ENTERTAINING! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Check out my MERCH! mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/?
You need more views like for realllllll your voice is soothinggg
Very well done, and all little details Men appreciate being told in the process. Now got to get to it. Thank you sir 🙏 🎉
18:16 I was wondering about all those fumes 😂
I seriously didn’t know I needed to hear this voice, but I’m hooked.
Great video!
Favorite Tech video I have every watched Period. Thank you sir.
My pleasure. Please be sure to share with friends and follow me on twitter. It all helps me afford my fancy PBR.
I've been an auto mechanic for over 20 years. Many of the problems I see daily could have easily been avoided by simply following the vehicles maintenance schedule. I use a program on my computer called Automotive Wolf car care software to keep track of all the maintenance for my 3 cars, a truck and even a generator. It automatically can send you text message reminders when any type of service is due. Two of my vehicles have over 200,000 miles and have never needed any repairs. Want to save money? Follow your maintenance schedule!
Excellent post. Thanks for being a viewer!
Awesome DIY! I love your choice of words and how you cover just about every question that pops into my head as I watch! I appreciate your video on this intake manifold cleaning as I was afraid of over soaking chemicals but you got them covered!
Happy others can learn from my (sometimes painful) experiences!
Mechanic work can be so tedious. But I never thought when Sam Elliot narrates it, it can be so soothing
Merv, I can’t thank you enough. Through your power and grace I was infused with your wellspring of knowledge about this exotic and environmentally friendly piece of Japanese machinery, all while pinching a few off on the John. 23 minutes of a sheer masterpiece, loved every second of it!
Incredibly poetic! *Discount Code good through St.Patty's Day* : PERCH10
I see I've found AvE's father figure. New sub. I'm entertained and knowledged.
Awesome! Thank you!
okay wow... Your videos are fun to watch and their very helpful. Thank you! My 2012 Prius keeps overheating going uphill, the water pump and thermostat seems to be working okay because I see coolant flowing at 180F. I replaced both anyway... But my instinct tells me its not enough. So I wanted to learn how to clean the egr system so the engine doesn't run hotter and that how I found these awesome videos. Does anyone know of if there's a bigger radiator/radiator fan I can install? Is it a good idea to add a big ol trans cooler and use it as a secondary radiator?
I see not a lot of folks are stepping up to the plate with advice. Maybe try prius chat friend. Lots of experienced prius-fixers in there. And thanks for watching!
The mesh acts like a diffuser and reduces turbulence for proper function of the mass airflow sensor.
Odd that the toyota engineers didn't feel the need for any mesh.
I sit stonefaced thru comedy movies but think you are informative mechanically and funnier than heck!
Helen’s toothbrush may cost you dearly….
Glad you enjoyed it! Of course, you realize you may have just given yourself an awesome nickname right? "Stoneface".
I wiped it off real good with some old rags before putting it back, so I think I'm in the clear. (I'm pretty crafty when I borrow her stuff. )
We replaced our PVC valve when we did this job. Currently the engine appears to be running rich and we are attempting to trouble shoot. How might we test for pcv valve leak? It's possible the part we got is inferior
We'll also be checking out the maf sensor
To answer your question, it IS definitely possible to get an inferior part, but checking out the MAF sensor is also a good idea. Maybe clean it? (Carefully)
Great video! Great Voice over. Will definitely reference this video in the future!
Awesome, thank you!
Nice work! That's probably the best video on cleaning those parts! 👌
Wow, thank you!
I’m ready to listen to your voice every time I go to sleep 😂
Be sure to watch for my upcoming sleepy-time lullaby album!
I'm just seeing about any info about cleaning the cooler, too. If my car has the shakes.
You're funny as heck and make it look easy. Thanks. Do you have a video about the oil leak on the back left (passenger) side? I'm not exactly sure where the oil is coming from but I figure it's probably a common problem.
Not yet!
I used a pressure washer. Cleaned it out real quick and real clean.
Also, I think you should create another channel of you reading things like Peter rabbit, huckleberry Finn and other children classics
There was a lot of sense of humor if anyone noticed.
Great job btw.
I wish if I could ask you to do the same for my 2012 Lexus ct200h which has the same engine.
Thanks! 👍
I would like to see you do a video of a 2007 Toyota Prius EGR removal just like you did
Gen 2 doesn't have an EGR system.
Where are you located? Wish I could give you my car to work on!!
Do you have a video on cleaning the EGR Valve? Replacing the EGR valve every 50K gets expensive.
It's coming out within a week or two.
So what's the benefit?i can't get it how 1-2mm thick carbon residue in pipes can affect gas flow?
I like things real clean. Every little bit helps.
I love @PriusChat and you're right about Mendel !
Informative without being condescending i likey likey😂😂😂
Very well produced, edited and informative for that particular job. However if you are that far into it, you really should clean or replace the EGR valve. Yes is adds some time and frustration, but it should be done as well. The EGR cooler probably should be done as well, but that is a much more involved job.
Thanks for watching! Actually, I have a whole series of videos, including the EGR cooler. Check 'em out!
Thanks, can you please send the pdf file for steps
Thanks for watching. All our PDF's are in the digital section of our merch store. This link should help: mervs-merch.creator-spring.com/digital
Brake cleaner/starter spray is ether (highly volatile, low octane rating), carburetor/intake/injection cleaner contains lots of xylene or toluene (high octane rating) and maf sensor cleaner is isopropyl alcohol.
Wow - incredibly instructive, helpful and entertaining all at the same time. Thank you - keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
