      Along with a bit of oven cleaner just to really dirty up the ocean. Clean or at least rinse it in the sink, then it goes to the sewerage treatment plant first instead of straight out to sea in the storm water

    Just did my M47 intake manifold this weekend, without a pressure washer.. The previous owner/garage had badly fitted it so it was blowing crap everywhere and low power. Took it off, found all the narrower pipes were clogged, and the main parts about 30% clogged with oily sooty grime. It took a lot of oven cleaner, de-greasers, hot soaking, scrubbing and pushing out sludge with a giant pipe-cleaner thing (intended for cleaning behind domestic radiators).. Cleaned up like new eventually. New gaskets. My hands are grey, so much sludge. Happy to say it's running much better after a clean. EGR blank next weekend, keep it clean and breathing well!

      EGR blank not bad for the engine?

    • @martinbcooper
      @martinbcooper 21 день назад

      @@benndarayta9156 it's better for the engine. An EGR sends exhaust back into the intake to re-burn it to reduce NO2 emissions at low revs. With less Oxygen in the intake the engine burns less efficiently. Diesel exhaust is sooty and oily so it builds up in the intake and around the valves over time causing problems. Removing the EGR keeps your engine cleaner for longer, increases efficiency and performance a little too. You will need to get it mapped out of the ECU or you'll get engine lights and IF you have a DPF it's more complicated as the EGR is involved in keeping the DPF from getting clogged up. My 2003 320D with an M47TU engine did not have a DPF from factory so it wasn't a difficult job.

    • @benndarayta9156
      @benndarayta9156 20 дней назад

      @@martinbcooper isn't the main purpose of EGR is to cool down engine and for less emission?

    • @martinbcooper
      @martinbcooper 20 дней назад

      @@benndarayta9156 Nah the EGR sends exhaust gas back into the air intake at low revs, tis re-burns the exhaust gas to reduce NO2 emissions. Unfortunately this makes your engine less efficient, and as diesel exhaust is sooty and oily it causes your intake and valves to get clogged up. If your engine is running poorly or the EGR valve gets stuck open it clogs everything up and causes all sorts of problems. A diesel engine with EGR removed will last longer and burn fuel more efficiently.

    I dove in yesterday and took off the inlet manifold. My car 520D is 10yrs old now with 165,000 mileage. I was expecting to see loads of gunk like I've seen in many pictures, but mine wasn't like that. It's clearly been done by a previous owner, and / or all the motorway milage has helped.
    Of course there is gunk and cleaning it can only help, so it's been educational. But i don't think this is what's causing my mot fail. I'll take it the garage for a diagnostic next, I'm guessing injector problem. Thanks for video.

    Super impressed with the oven cleaner. Needing to clean the aluminium intake on my 300TDI as part of cylinder head replacement, so will buy some cans at supermarket 👍. The egr's been deleted on my defender so hopefully it will not get all this engine and valve neck clogging shite in again. Although I do appreciate the EGR does reduce engine temps, which would be more of an issue on a high performance engine like yours; unlike my road going tractor lol.

  • @Altair885
    @Altair885 Месяц назад +2

    A word to the wise. It should take an inlet manifold a very long time before it ends up in this state. Under normal operating conditions with an engine in good running order you wouldn't expect to need to carry out a cleaning procedure until the car has covered maybe 100k miles or more. A caked up intake manifold is usually more indicative of there being a fault somewhere, usually related to the EGR system, although it can also be from excessive crankcase gasses or a diesel injection or depollution related issues. Basically anything that creates excessive carbon or oily deposits to be generated, but simply this can be due to a poor servicing routine!

There is a great vid on YT showing how to remove - clean and reinstall the S/flaps....then you can remove the EGR (as George does in his vid) and there wont be any more issues with clogging up the intake AND you get to keep your torque at low RPM.....win win 😄😄

      @@redrock1963 the advice on removing swirl flaps varies according to age and model of engine.

    Technically speaking if a engine has had the egr deleted is the oil mist from the crankcase ventilation important and necessary for upper cylinder lubrication or would a engine run at its cleanest and have its best running conditions if the crankcase vapours were run through a tube to the ground like old engines did? Sorry if its a stupid question but it is what it is.

    • @h82fail
      @h82fail Год назад

      Some kind of vent is needed to prevent pressure build up (gasses that get past the rings) - those old cars would just vent to atmosphere. These new cars are not really a vent but instead a crankcase vacuum. Its better than a vent, not only do you not have oily vapors openly venting, but it increases the pressure differential for improved ring seal - which allows for lower friction rings and all these engines are designed around having it. I would advise against converting your car to vent to atmosphere. Instead lots of people use catch cans that the vent flows through to stop the oil from getting into the intake without having to remove it

    After viewing one of your other video's I went on and removed and cleaned the intake on my 320d with 150000km, and it was one messy job. To get the intake out was also a challenge since these connectors with the extra white locking function was really struggling to get away. But finally I got it off. If there were a nicer way to do this to the environment it would be great because all the soot and grime is not the best for flushing down the drain. Some kind of oil separator washing cabin would be great.
    I checked with a tuner for disabling the egr when tuning but he also strongly suggested to disable the regen and hence also a dpf delete. Whats your thoughts on this, do you really need to disable/ remove the regen/dpf too ?

    Great video. Been trying to clean my Smart CDI intake today as I've got a new exhaust manifold and turbo for it. Not thought of oven cleaner, so cheers for the tip. Intake manifold is slightly worse than yours and a bitch to take off. Wish I could spray the oven cleaner in while it's still on the engine 😂

    It's just the time it takes to take the bloody thing apart, and put it all back together that bothers me. Mine is the M47 engine. Just changing the airfilter, left my "jaw on the ground". ..how is that even legal, to construct something like that. 😁. Mine even got those original "strut engine brackets brace bars" on it.....really don't know if it makes a diffierence....just a pain in the butt, when you want to work on the engine.

      @@ZahedZeeshan think of it as fat in your arteries. is it bad? depends, some of us like to work out and be healthy and others like to sit around all day and eat unhealthy. will doing this to your engine give you more power? maybe not, but it will get close to its original power (assuming your intake manifold is really clogged and your engine can barely breath). will this increase the life of your engine? probably, but who cares if youre not keeping the car for too long.
      i know my answer is really vague but my point is that some us like to keep our cars (engine) as healthy as possible.

And one more question is it harmful for some parts to be covers in that same wet oil because my manifold leaked all over the engine and sensors and could that oil come from the crankshaft breather?
