Good video! Some things to note though -Most swirl flap blanks (atleast the ones sold around here) are a bit undersized, relying on the o-ring having to take up more slack than it should, which leads to the o-rings failing after a while, resulting in a boost leak. Some people add sealant on there, how good of an idea that is is up for debate. Unscrewing the flap itself from the shaft of the flap is another option (slightly different than what was done on the car in the video at the start, where the shafts were cut completely), that leaves oem quality seal. However warrants you leave the actuator shaft in place, so it prevents the flap shafts from coming out. Personally I opted for the more expensive blanks plus sealant after the first set of blanks failed as I mentioned. Either way you should keep an eye on whether the blanks have not become leaky after a while. That would be indicated with oil spray around the area. -Must make sure all of the seals with metal washers are in place. The ones that go between the manifold and the M7 studs especially. You can see one is missing in the video, maybe he put it back on, or maybe it was lost. It wasn't mentioned. Either way they must all be there, otherwise as you tighten it up, it will crook over and likely not seal properly. -You can leave the vacuum solenoid for the flaps in place, just loop it's inlet/outlet together with a bit of hose to prevent dirt getting in. That way you don't have a dangling connector and don't have to code it out to get rid of errors. Blank off the vacuum line that went to the flap valve close to the vacuum splitter. A bolt with smooth part of shaft will work. A bolt with full thread can leave a spiral path along the thread and cause a leak. -While you have the manifold off, it would be a good idea to replace the 3mm (OEM uses 3.5x2 hose; 3mm and 3.2mm work fine) vacuum lines that go to the vacuum splitter under it. Especially if the vacuum hoses look like in the video, and even more if you have a car with vacuum actuated turbo. 5-6m of hose is enough to do all of them and it doesn't take long when you already have everything off.

Awesome, what a well described and clearly shown tutorial! Hi...i just done my swirl flaps on my e60. I cover the vacuum pipe with a screw as you did. I noticed that my brake pedal is hard now before starting the engine , is that because i blocked the vacuum pipe ? Is the only thing that i done on vacuum pipes . Regards
I'm just a little confused why would you delete the flaps and not just ultrasound clean the manifold? The flaps were designed to improve the efficiency of the engine, with the flaps the pressures in the engine work for the benefit of the intake, by removing the flaps you are making your engine consume more fuel, produce less power and increasing the soot production, which is the most common problem that leads to most diesel engines dying. I understand doing this when you have the need for more air intake (if engine is modded with bigger intercooler, turbo, injectors and or chip tune) but if your engine is stock and you're just doing maintenance, don't delete the flaps just clean the manifold and you're set, save yourself from issues down the road.

hey :) did you use the 22 mm swirl flaps kit or the 33 mm? I have the 320d e46 (m47d20 engine). thanks in advance.
I linked the kit to buy
@@GeorgeAusters can't see any links related to the kit. Can you please drop the link here for me?
Does anybody know where I can go to get injectors refurbished?
Perhaps you can help me with this. I have a 20d X3 with the M47 engine. I think the swirl flaps have been removed, but I’m not 100% sure. At low revs (1200-1800) I sometimes get some jerkiness, as if the throttle was on-off. Could this be because of the swirl flap delete?
I’d appreciate some feedback if you have it. Thank you 👍🏼
I saw the 4 small parts that turn the actual swirl metal blade being remove and discarded however I didn't see the actual metal swirl flap (the part which claimed many good engines) been take out Did I miss something or are they still in the manifold they just don't move any more
Because they'd already been removed
@@GeorgeAusters Ok
Hello, have you seen an increase in fuel consumption after the delete???? What is your fuel consumption in exterion in l/100KM???
I noticed the increase after the remap but not with the swirl flap delete as they were already removed
I have 530d 1999 , 135kw automatic, N57. This engine have flaps??
How do I get hold of you bro I have a problem with my E46 BMW 320d
I’m not working on other cars at the moment
What products/method did you use for cleaning out intake?
I have a full video coming soon!
@@GeorgeAusters Nice man im literally balls deep in my M57 now to change exhaust manifold(common fault) and to my delight flaps have been blanked lol Win Win!
What torque for screw and nuts?
Great video again bro 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks again!
this is a great video, very nice explaining! Good job man.
Thanks man!
Dear George. I deleted the swirl flaps from my e39 525d and I experience a little torque loss on lower rpm. Is it okay?
It’s okay if you’re fine with it. But yes that’s normal.
13:40 I see one round gasket missing on the left
Hi...i just done my swirl flaps on my e60. I cover the vacuum pipe with a screw as you did. I noticed that my brake pedal is hard now before starting the engine , is that because i blocked the vacuum pipe ? Is the only thing that i done on vacuum pipes . Regards
You brake pedal should be hard before starting the engine
So everything should be ok. I noticed this after the job. It wasn't like that before .
Did bmw e65 prefl have this problem ?
M57 engine yes
any reason why darkside developments asks for chassis number? do they send info to dvla etc.
No it’s just to check it’s compatible for your car
I agree, I’m not a fan of removing swirl flaps but on an old manifold it’s a must.. A new manifold is the best solution
Delete because flaps break and get inside your engine
@@eduardassuchodolskis8876 That happens only if you don't regularly maintain your intake manifold
How can you tell if there the 22mm or 32mm blanks
Another great video 👍
One question: with what product you clean/wash the material (manifold)?
My (e46, m47. Is a 320d sedan from 1999. Bough new. Now with 330.000kms) still have the egr... Last weekend I check the dirt inside, but it has less than that one on video.
Do you recomend to remove it? I also head that then it will increase on low rpm (bellow 2.000), it's true?
Best regards.
I have a video coming in a few weeks👍🏻
It was 5🎆 the new video about diesel filter.
Regarding my questions:
- what product you use to clean the manifold? (My still have the egr and is almost like that one)
- is it true that with the egr we have a bit more torque/power on low rpm? (Like 1500-1800)
Cheers
I have a video cleaning the intake manifold coming at the end of the month👍🏻
Can you give a link for swirl flap delete parts ? Or any part number for them ?
Is the link not in the description?
@@GeorgeAusters no there isn't.
how come you replaced the silicone hose on egr straight pipe with the original one?
Because I prefer the OEM look
@@GeorgeAusters thanks for the reply. recently got a 320cd so can’t wait to follow your vids to bring it up to scratch
No problem mate, glad to help!
amazing video as usual!!!
Thanks man!
how do you map it out
Two of the four of mine had snapped...good job I done it when I did😂
What mileage?
Do you think the removal of the flaps could case DPF issues? I’m having issues since doing this.
Not likely no
@@GeorgeAusters I managed to force a regen today on a long drive with a scanner and its fixed. 👍
what happens if you don't get it mapped out ?
Engine Management light will come on
Hi, I dropped a gasket in the engine, how can I get it out?
With a hook
So I thought let's clean the injectors from my BMW 520 D M47 E60, after disconnecting the battery took the 1e out clean the nozel and put it back with a new fire ring, and so on until 4, put everything in place, and try to start,,,,,, NO GO,,, it doesn't get enough air somewhere, took the ECR hose off and could start but running as a camel on 3 legs, what did i do wrong... now I have IMPA BMW software, and it throws me with codes and one special one ,,,, swirl flaps .... before disconnected in the ECU, I think it came back after taking the battery of or something,,, I think to take the flaps out,,, but not the vacuum hose. it totally doesn't have power en consumption 30 ltr 100. went towing it to two garages (B quick and another ) they could not fix it) I have the car home again, so tomorrow I will take the vacuum hose off (close it) it doesn't have power if I turn the steering wheel it collapse. What do I do wrong >??????George
Ive just bought a 2006, X5, e53, and trying to see if i still have swirl flaps or not, without taking manifold off !!
Ive taken a foto but cant post it here ? Where can i post it to let u see ??

Did you loose some power after you deleted it?
You lose low down torque yes
@@GeorgeAusters Maybe it would make sense to replace it with the new one instead?
@@mishokorlov Yes
Can you just put on the n57 intake instead?
No
Nice video!!
Thanks mate
great stuff, thnx for share
And how do I map the Swirl flaps out I canna know how to do EGR and DPF how to map them out eventually but I've not seen a program with which you can map them out
You don't need to code them mate. There is no error for that.

@@adrianzzzsss are you sure?

Hi,what size is the swirl flaps on the 2.0d M47 engine?.It is a 2007 model.
You need to remove yours and measure them mate
22mm got the same year and engine and that's what fitted mine.

George my car won’t start now. Any ideas pal?
You have 12v and fuel?

forgot to say, it feels faster now and idles better too! I might do the EGR delete soon also as cleaning it has made a huge difference. keep up the good work!
