A few years back I had an '87 Corolla FX (base model) as my daily. So base model it didn't even come with a radio or door speakers and rode on 155mm tires. That thing was absolutely unstoppable in the snow, despite how low it was to the ground it's lack of weight and tiny tires made it drive like an ice skate in snow. I miss that car.

What would I do instead? Mazda 323 with a KLZE v6 swap. Same 80's styling, destroyer of all NA, or turbo, or ITB. Won't have premium pricing on anything, engine is lightweight, fits.

Currently building my 4th FX16 since my first car in 1988. I love my 20 valve AW11, but given recent prices and condition risks, I would only buy a 20v I could inspect and compression test myself. I also think a heavier engine like the 3SGTE would upset the fun, tossable nature of the FX. Stock 4AGE is great fun in this little chassis. Endurance racing these engines since 2007 and I say the oil starvation issue is a myth. If I needed more fun than 4AGE I'd look to the similarly light 2zz with much better torque and 180 HP.

This FX16 still looks great today. I have the modern version of it in the 2017 Corolla iM 6MT hatchback. You can tell it's a newer version and I love that car. Modifying Corollas has always been a part of me. I have a 2009 Corolla S 5MT that I've turbocharged with 230bhp and done all kinds of work to the chassis and suspension while it goes like mySupercharged MR2 now, yes I still own one, a 1989 5MT. Even my 2017 Corolla iM has more power with 180bhp up from the 137bhp that is stock. I also like to keep much of the stock looks with subtle upgrades and put the money into the engine, chassis, and suspension. Keep modifying those Corollas! I love seeing them.

Honestly the mentality you have on this car is like the early 90s accords. Pretty light pretty low power under appreciated but if done right they can looks fantastic

I remember my brother use to daily a FX16 back when I was 8-9 years old. He really loves Toyota especially any Corolla. The car was white, completely gutted, roll caged, and short shifter For the 2 years he had it, He loved it and missed it when he sold it to this day. It’s great to see that others know it and love it. My brother use to joke that it’s the closes he’s getting to a Toyota Starlet 😂 I’ll love to drive one.

I'm old enough to remember when the Toyota Corolla FX was new. It's cool to see one that's been restored. Those old Japanese commuter cars from the 1980s and 90s especially more obscure models like the FX-16 have become cool time machines. They have a lot more character than the dreary appliance cars of today. Unfortunately many of those less desirable cars like the AE82 Corolla got driven into the ground and thrown away since they were considered disposable.

This video makes me miss my old Corolla e90 3-door which was also red. It had 4A-GZE and BC Racing BR coilovers. Went like a go kart at curvy roads.

  • @ADub-Bub

True these are fairly cheap if you can find one, but they have been considered disposable so long they are much harder to find than the AE86 and AW11. Today on searchtempest I see only 1 FX16 and 1 (ridiculous price) FX, compared to 11 AW11s. Only 2 AE86 today but those come up far more often. In the US the FX was only sold in 87 and 88. The base FX model you are more likely to find has lesser engine, brakes, and suspension, and even lacks some of the chassis bracing that stiffens up the FX16 models.
