4AGE "Blacktop" Swapped 1995 Toyota Corolla - One Take

- This 1995 Toyota Corolla features a high-revving, 175-horsepower 4AGE "Blacktop" 20-Valve JDM Engine swap, with a manual transmission. The 4AGE engine is more commonly found on the earlier, rear-drive AE86 models, but this front-drive AE101 model, unloved as it is in car-guy circles, proves to be a manic good time, though it was sorely in need of new tires.

Reminds me of my days in Jamaica. We actually still have a lot of these cars with these motors in Jamaica in clean condition. Many are also boosted. We have these in Levin, BZR, Trueno and a few other Toyota platforms. Used to love these things back in the 90's.

Beautiful car. We have a big culture around these platforms in South Africa. We had a 20v 6-speed Corolla sold on the domestic market so there are a lot of these engines available. These are incredibly reliable cars. I've had my 4A-FE hatch AE92 for over 10 years and the only mechanical work was clutch replacement, gearbox rebuild an shocks. That's all I've spent besides oil changes.
First thing I wanna do once I get a stable enough job is swap a 4A-GE into a tazz 😂. As a chassis alone, the 1.3 carb Tazz is going for less than 15k rn
@@cameronfell4415 I have a stock Tazz 160XE. It has bigger brakes and wider wheels, wider exhaust than the 130. It does 0-100 km/h in about 8.5s at the coast and top speed is about 190 indicated (probably 180). So with a 4A-GE you will be flying. Just make sure you upgrade the 130 brakes 🤣

@gardenstatePR South Africa has a BIG love for them. So much so, that the South African manufacturing branch of Toyota kept built AE90 Corolla hatchbacks till 2007. With a facelift. It was called the Millennium Tazz.
We did this with other cars too, like mk1 golf which we built till 2009
Car sounds beautiful. Nothing sounds as good as a Blacktop.

Love it. My first car was a 96' corolla. Bought it brand new. Had 1 mile on the odometer and the interior was still wrapped in plastic. I was proud as af!

I remember seeing this car on Craigslist a little over a year ago. It's cool to see it move on to another fellow ae101 enthusiast. The car itself is already underrated, & with that motor, it's a legit sleeper. Glad to see the 7th gen Corolla still being represented.

almost anything with individual throttle bodies will sound awesome but v12 ,small flat plane v8, v10, big inch cross plane v8 ,flat 6, and i6 all sound better, this is fact and can be scientifically proven. Also individual throttle bodies sound the best when there open stacks , bmw individual throttle bodies go into a shared plenum and don't sound as good as hillborn stacked fuel injection with individual throttle body open to the world.

This video takes me back during my younger years. Back in '97, I used to have a similar setup. I had an AE92 4-Door with a silver top 4AGE 20V powered by Electromotive TEC-II with a Mass Air Flow from a 5.0 Mustang. I also installed an on/off switch for the VVTi, which was cool!
In the process of adding 4AGE into my Corolla wagon because i read it bolts up pretty easy, love the look of this car

I got a 96 one with the manual as first car. 260k km on her and she's still running strong.
I had mine for 4 years. I bought it cheap with 150K miles on the clock and sold it for almost nothing at 300k. It was still running so strong despite all the abuse

The 95-96 corolla is by far my favorite fwd corolla. I know the 93's kinda look the same but the taillights are different. Thats a damn sweet ride right there! sounds magnificent!
Finally an E100 Corolla! My dad owns an EE101 1.3L 4E-FE Corolla and he's taken very well care of it - looks good even after 23 years. Although the engine only makes 88 hp, it's such a blast to drive. The engine sounds good for a 4-cylinder 1.3L, it is very rev-happy it feels powerful (even though it isn't). Floor it in 2nd and you'll feel the thrust, which is incredible for a car with an engine that small. Oh, and did I mention the engine is extremely reliable? Still going strong after 200.000 miles (320.000 kilometres).
A M wow nice, had the e100, 4a-fe manual, 5speed, it has some issues like belts and recently the piston ring got stuck. So gotta fix it, (or just change the fucking block entirely)
4AGE, 2zz, K24, K20, F20C, VW Beetle 1.6L boxer and Subaru 2.5L are my favorite 4 cylinder engines
I started highschool in 1995 and these were everywhere...but no 20v of course.
Every kid wanted an eclipse GSX or Integra GSR of course...I had a Black 83 K10 4x4. Those were good times. Really miss the truck too

Wish my first car(Euro Spec Corolla) also had the 4A-GE, i was sadly stuck with the 1.6 4A-FE, still one of the most reliable cars i have had though.
The japanese are so lucky, there were the only ones with 4A-GE from stock.
We got the 4age in aus in the ae82 & ae92. My first car was an 89 with 4afc! 90hp

I remember the usual run of the mill Corolla with the 1,3 or 1,6 engines as lovely every day cars. Not exciting, but refined and great to live with. This one, with that engine.. My kind of car! Love the noise it makes.
These badass 4age's have ruled in the lower class cars. These engines are a screamer with the ITB's. Have seen them in a charade in Pakistan. Coolest thing to hear compared to a Honda motor.
Here in the philippines corollas and civics are known for sleeper builds. Ranging from NA, superchargers, and turbos. And also engine swaps.

That car appears to be an AE102, not a 101. Sounds great! These were the best cars Toyota ever made imo, 93-97 in the US market.
I'm gonna say it. It sounds way better than any vtec engine I've ever heard.
Minor correction on the description: this isn't the AE86 engine. The AE86 had the first two generations of the 4A-GE, and this one is a fifth generation that would have been taken out of a Carina or a later Sprinter/Corolla (including the JDM version of this car). It's the same engine family as the red and black top, but it uses a completely different head design, with five valves per cylinder instead of four. You do seem these engines SWAPPED into AE86s quite often, though, most famously in "Initial D".

Actually it was first 3 gens. Blue top (tvis). Red top (tvis), and red top 100kw without tvis. Had them all in NZ. Then silver top and black. But yeah who cares.

i agree this body style is much more sporting then the XRS. the XRS is very much a blob.
Yup! Still have my dad's AE101 and it looks super sleek and clean compared to the newer cars. There's something about these 90's body styles where the body looks thin and flat relative to the ground and the a,b, and c pillars sort of flow out from it to support the roof. The newer cars are just bulbous.

Miata people have been running Azenis for years in the 14" size. They are pretty great sticky tires. Not the best but they work well for most people. They would be way better than what he has now. They aren't even expensive.

Hah, mine has 54k, same engine, but it's a 3 doors hatch. Not many of them left with so few miles. This video makes me want to swap it even more, but it's illegal where I live, I'd have to keep it as a track car only.

Had the AE92 Coupe. Went with the 4AGZE in mine. Absolutely loved it. Wish I still had it too.

shame he removed the stock airbox as it will cost him quite a bit of power especially in the bottom end where you need it on the street. For the 14" wheels put some Falken Azenis on it and it will be crazy sticky in the corners.
Mike Masson I have the stock airbox as well I only run it during the summer because the open ITB setup gets a lot of heat soak but for sound reason and this review I opened her up😉 there is some low end lost but much too end gained and I recently got some nice Azenis installed too
I would really like to see dyno results with the stock 20valve airbox and the open ITB's. I would guess that the open ITB's loose 10-20% compared to the stock airbox. I bought an 1989 MR2 with a silver top 20valve swap from a guy in San Luis Obispo who had thrown away the air trumpets inside the stock airbox because he liked the sound. It was crazy how much power it lost because of that. Driveability on the street was so affected I knew there was something wrong with the motor so I put that stuff back in the air box and it was so much faster street light to street light it was very noticeable.
Mike Masson huh that's crazy... the silvertop runs a MAF instead of a MAP so unless he got a blacktop/aftermarket ECU you lose a good amount of power from the ECU not knowing what to do.. but under 3k is where you feel the nice torque from the resistance the airbox gives

Tires... what kind of tires we got here! :D Pretty cool swap, now it just needs a second 20v 4age in the trunk with a synced up clutch and 6 speed, LSDs front and rear. Fuel cell can go... on the roof.
