It works! Successfully done, using Macbook Air 2018 to target Macbook Pro (M1) 2020. A very clear and helpful guide video. Thank you very much. (Note: Yes, it needs to be exactly 10 seconds to make it work, not more not less. Following a clock second will help you a lot. It took me 2 times to get it work.)
Bricked my MacBook Air M1 (by using Migration Assistant). Tried this method using an older MacBook Pro with Usb a to Usb C adaptor. Worked putting it into DFU mode. But the last step (4/4) fails, giving an Error 53 shortly after showing the Apple logo on the M1. Tried it multiple times, it always fails with Error 53.
After an hour talking to Apple Support and 7 hours trying to figure this out myself, a 10 minute video walked me through it. You, my man, saved me a long trip to the Apple Store.
This video is really a life saver. Two days ago i was trying to clean install mac os ventura on my mac air m2 2023. But i erased the Mackintosh hd and it restartd and got a circle with an exclamation ❗ mark. I was in disarray. Panicked and contacted apple care . They asked to submit the device. Apples warrenty terms are horrible and i had not opted for apple care. I was dreading its cost even it was just 2 month old. Then i came across this video on youtube. Arrangef a intel mac air of 2015 model , installed apple configurator and followed the step . I used my vivo mobile charger cable usb a to c and on first instance it failed to revive my device but when i opted the erase and restore option , it worked ! Unbelievable! A 7 year older mac is restoring life on 2023 mac! Really thanks a lot.
Unknowingly erased my M1 Macbook disk while trying revert to Big Sur from Monterey beta, once erased you have sort of semi bricked ur Macbook, I struggled for over 4 hours to get this sorted trying out different guides online, but nothing worked. Accidentally stumbled upon this video on RUclips and wow this was God sent, it took me just 20 mins to get my M1 Macbook booting back on BigSur again, perfect video with clear instructions especially the Key combination to get the M1 Macbook in DFU mode. Thanks a ton, you saved me from the hassle of going back to Apple service center.
Still works in 2022! Updated my M1 Pro 16" MBP to macOS Monterey 12.1, then shut it down for the night. Next morning, immediately to the Explanation Point of Death. Could not boot to recovery or boot options. Phone call to Apple Support and a visit to the Apple Store did not help. Apple Store was using an older MacBook with a similar procedure in this video. I dont have a spare MBP lying around, so I got an M1 MacBook Air from the Apple Store used the USB-C cable it came with to follow the procedure in this video. Was able to do a Revive on the first attempt. YOU SAVED MY DATA THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
Great video, some additional tips for using this video - 1) Make sure you use the correct usb-c port, certain ones are DFU capable, others are not. I was doing this on an M2 Macbook and I needed the top left, as per the video. 2) On some of these new macs, even touching a single key can turn it on, be careful when starting the process. 3) Don't bother trying to count this yourself, let the video count for you! Just be ready on the keypress and press the keys, as per the video, release as per the video, it's soooo much easier and with this approach I've been able to access DFU every time.
Apple silicon only : yes,.. so its different for Intel Mac. I still reckon it's a design flaw why Apple instructs you to press "Power/TouchID" to power on these Mac's or Intel Macs, but truth be told, you can do the same with bottom row of keys and track-pad button too. Affected mac would power on, just got "Failed to Activate" from Recovery and ssd was wiped., This worked 100%
This video was the answer. Phone support failed. All the Apple stores in my region are closed. Apple was about to have me send my M1 MB pro back and have me reorder a new one. Then I found this video. You saved me a 4+ week turn around on a new M1. Thank you so much!
I have MacBook Pro 2017 and its latest update is Ventura 13.6.4. And it says it’s up to date. Apple configuratir needs update 14 and because of this doesn’t download (((
You are a bloody wizard mate. I tried many tricks and many videos but only yours worked! Your timing in the video (where you count) is a precision model!!!
I can never thank you enough for this super helpful tutorial. You are a lifesaver brother! After trying everything for two days this video made it a piece of cake. You are a TRUE LEGEND. ✌️
Oh wow! THIS was excellent! I spent hours trying to make it work from the Apple help pages - then I found your video and within an hour I had my new Mac M1 up and running again! YOU are awesome! Thanks for being there for us!
Logged in just to like and subscribe. I loved my M1 Air until I broke it and had to fix it, and the hardware fixes were by far the easiest part. Thanks for documenting what Apple refuses to!
You saved my new laptop! I thought I would have to go to the apple store but this worked. I used a USB-A to USB-C cable and an older Mac. You are absolutely right that it's important to time the button presses correctly.
Thank u for sharing this. After two days of hitting my head against the wall, I’ve been able to restore my Mac with the help of this video. Big thanks again
OMG you are a life saver. Just got an open box macbook air and trying to wipe it cause me to end up with the exclamation point. Followed apple guide for DFU mode and had zero luck. Ironically your method works and apple seems to list the step wrong. Press and release the power and then hold the combo of keys...That didn't work. Followed along with you and the video and instantly got DFU mode. Twice in a row too since I tied to revive with no luck and had to do the restore. Thank you so much. I think I am tech savvy but this one was a real struggle. Very much appreciate you posting this and other videos that have been very helpful!
I love the new boot mode on my M1 Macbook pro, for DFU mode I just wish when it says 'Keep holding to boot recovery mode' it had something like "Keep holding to boot into recovery mode" then something like "Release now for boot options or keep holding for DFU mode" then a little countdown started before enter DFU incase you no longer need it.
THIS is the only fix that allowed me to restore my M1 MBP. USB, recovery, and terminal restore all failed after M1 MBP was upgraded to 11.0.1. Thank you so much for providing this fix.
You bet Song! Thank you for the comments, it was frustrating for sure. macOS Big Sur 11.1 should fix this issue but sadly its too late for everyone who got the first Apple Silicon Macs!
Thank you for this video. This solved my issue with computer account creation failing every single time. Reinstalling the system from scratch didnt help but putting it in dfu mode exactly like in this video solved my issue within 10minutes like mentioned in your title.
Wow thanks so much! I read more than a dozen articles on DFU mode for M1 Mac (including apple's own docs) and this is the ONLY one that worked!!! Thanks very very much. So annoying though.
Many thanks for this absolutely brilliant video. My new Mac Mini M1 kept failing to complete the update from 11.1 to 11.2. I tried all sorts of solutions (which involved downloading the update files around 10 times!) before I discovered this video. I connected the Mini to my old Macbook Air, dowloaded the ispw file as you suggested and it worked like a treat. Again, many, many thanks for your clear and concise video.
Legendary. it sucks you have to have a 2nd Mac, but if you can get your hands on a 2nd device this video saved me. I even took this to a MAC reseller and they couldn't accomplish this. Thank you so much!
OMFG! Bro you've saved my life! I've been trying to get into my iMac I had bought and it was stolen and then recovered and the thief locked me out remotely of my own computer! This worked first try and didn't cost me any additional money! Thank you so much! Seriously!
As others have said, your counting was the key! So simple. I wish Configurator 2 would count us down too.. .but this was perfect. After HOURS of frustration. Thank you!!!
@@Mr.MacintoshI forgot my recovery key and don't remember apple id either and Mac setting does not allow me to boot from external drive either as it's kept on High Security mode. Will this method work so I can reinstall OS on my Mac?
Seems like it’s near impossible to get it in DFU mode without this video. Just wanted to say thanks. Such a lifesaver. Really wish Apple would consider the end user before making these type of changes. 🤦♂️
Thank you so much! I had my working Macbook Air M2 connected to power so everytime I tried turning off my dead Macbook Pro M1 it auto-restarted and couldn't ever turn it off with the cable plugged between them. Watching your video helped me realize I had to unplug my Macbook M2 from power and leave only the USBC cable between both macbooks.
Thank you SOOOOO MUCH! this saved me! Also GREAT video - you included just the need to know and not all the babble! I will always remember this act of kindness you put out in the world. Thank you so much again!
I tried going through the Apple help pages and got super frustrated with it! They don’t mention that it only works when you plug in the USB-C cable in the first port. Thank YOU!
it worked like charm, thanks a lot. used to revive the mac OS Sequoia 15.1.1 sucesfully which was on a recovery loop. this video highlight is putting the mac on DFU mode and the counting style worked.. thanks a ton

Two of the three ones I bought specifically because they claimed it’d do power + data didn’t work, and I couldn’t enter DFU mode without it
Will storage from the device used to fix the m1 macbook be wasted? Or will storage not be taken up? And once you get to the start up screen can you unplug the cable? Sorry for all the questions lol
Thanks for the video. BTW, for anyone interested, I just faced this issue but didn't have an older Mac. I did pull it off with VMware and Big Sur 11.1. It was a process but it worked without suprises. Good luck all. Saved a trip to visit 'the Geniuses' lol.
THANKSS UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ! you save my life ! i was block on recovery lock pending my Jamf Trial period and don't have the recovery Key ! And i have to say that i tried over 10 times de combo touch to go in dfu and then !!! Succefully go in DFU mode and restore my M1 ! again Thank U🥰😇🥳
Just wanted to say thank you! I got caught out on the Ventura update and needed to roll back the changes. Couldn't have done it without this video and the resources you have provided. Big thanks!!!
QUESTION: Does this method work for restoring backwards from Monterey to Big Sur? I have both a 2020 M1 and Intel MacPro and want to WIPE my M1 and do a Clean Install. It use to be very easy to wipe drives and do CLEAN Reinstalls. Not so easy anymore. I do not want to attempt it until I know more details for fear of Bricking my M1. When installing the ISPW File - Can you go BACKWARDS with the Firmware version? I always thought Firmware could never go back in time. Also - When I try to re-install my M1 OS, it only gives me the option to install Monterey. I do not want to Install Monterey. I want to reinstall the Original Software that came with my Mac which was Big Sur. I've watched all your videos but not sure what approach to take. DFU seems like a good approach but a little worried since I have never done it before and do not want to screw things up.
do we really need type c cord? like i have usb type a with type c at the end or type c with type c only? i have macbook air it doesnt have type c so i dont know if this well work
I have a macbook pro 2020 A2251, but it doesn't have M1, it can work, I can't restore, always try to start a clean installation in catalina, download from the network, it doesn't finish and there are 2 minutes left, I've done a lot of things but I haven't been able to get it to work the Mac. I don't know how I can solve it. Thanks for the guide and help.
I followed your link, everything went fine as per your instruction till the installation part, after it rebooted and again keep going for the "loading startup options" - reboot in look and every time rebooted its going to the start options gear icon, any idea?
I’m having issues with my trackpads haptic feedback not working. I’ve followed many internet methods and replaced the trackpad completely. The replacement gave the same results. Everything works as it should minus the haptic feedback. I’ve done a factory reset and still nothing. I’m thinking this as a firmware reset may work? Thoughts?
I have the M1 MBP and it did not work as it immediately booted whenever I touched the Power button. Damn. Apple says: FIRST press and release JUST the Power button THEN use the 10sec combination use explained. Then it worked fine. Thx!
M1 MacBook Pro goes into recovery mode during every attempt? I’m pressing the four correct keys, before 10 seconds it begins opening recovery mode... Successfully activated dfu mode by using the four button combination from recovery mode. In the options - recovery mode page.
Nope! Apple Silicon Macs DO have NVRAM Settings. You can use the terminal command "nvram -p" to look at the settings. But there is no startup keyboard command to clear the settings.
Hi there.. Which function i need to remove system pin from locked mac? Because I know there are certain companies that lock their MacBooks with certain software and that's my situation right now.
Two questions. 1) Can the lid be closed on the target M1 Mac during revive or restore? 2) Can the target M1 Mac have power plugged into the other USB-C port during revive or restore? (I’ve decided to do a restore and download the full installer in Apple Configurator 2, which is taking a long time. So should I worry that the target Mac needs power? Can I safely close the lid if this looks like an overnight process?)
Hello nicdnyc, this is why i always download the ipsw file manually. I know for sure how long the download will take ad then i can use that file to restore in a snap any time. The download can take some time and is why I would connect the target mac to power. Once you have the file the restore process is only 10 min 👍
I’m getting a message saying “ The OS cannot be restored on this device “ when dragging the ipsw file in the dfu box . I’m using the restore option to get the recovery partition back to big sur
You Are My Hero Man ! You save my life 😀 ! Thank you for create this useful video ! And Again Thank you for your great Content and your good channel ❤️
I just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro M1 chip and it’s asking if I want macOS does this mean I’m fine & don’t have to reinstall anything. I’m a newbee to Apple computers and I stumbled upon this message so I don’t understand the term “brick” etc.
No problem Denzel! The term "Brick" is used when an update or something makes the mac almost useless and broken. Where are you getting the message asking you if you want macOS? It COULD Be that it's trying to tell you that you need to UPDATE to 11.1. You can check the version by clicking about this mac from the apple icon in the upper left.
Hi, i have a macbook 2018. I have 2 partition. Macos and bootcamp. Bootcamp are completely fine with no problems. But i cant log into macos also recovery mode didn’t work. Is this tool will help me?
Have Mac Pro M1 2020, didn't use the laptop for over 3 months, once opened was not reponcing, have decided to change the battery, made all to the book, still not responding. Found your video, no responce, the "source" mac is not seeing the patient, no sound or smth like that, combination didn't work. If i am plugging it to the enerygy/to "souce" mac than I "feel" the electrcity is coming to patient mac but nothing is changing. Do you think it's completly dead?
Hi, will this method allow me to install Monterey onto a specific partition on the target mac? I have a blank partition and I would like a back up system on there.
Can I do this to a MacBook pro that has Remote management installed? Im asking because I bought a laptop of ebay and everything time I connect to the internet ot comes up, and everything time I try to access (command s) it seems blocked 🚫
oh crap. Nothing you can do will remove remote management. You need to contact the seller and have them remove your Mac from Apple Business Manager for the owner who shows up on the remote management screen. OR have them return it for you. The workaround until then you can go through setup assistant with wifi turned off. But you will still be prompted to manage your system forever until this is fixed by them.
@Mr. Macintosh I was thinking about Regional to the company but if it's lock, It might have been a lost laptop, (UPDATE) that's what I exactly did and now i have And minister privileges, I managed to block the remote Management via fire wall and also removed it from the sharing folder, no all I need to figure out Is how to change the firmware password or reset it, also I am able to go into single user mode now also
I get in DFU mode but get the message "The OS cannot be restored on this device". My target is an M1 with unknown OS and my host is a 2020 Macbook Air with Sequoia. I use this host mac to restore all my devices and it works. Not working on this M1. Is there something I'm missing?
Okay, I'm confused. On your site, it said the error occurred while preparing the update has been fixed. However, I receive my m1 mac on friday. My question is, is it safe for me to update from 11.0 to 11.0.1? Have people had their m1 bricked by just doing that through the software update menu? Also, should I migrate my data first or upgrade to 11.0.1 first? Thanks!
The only way M1 users have bricked (requiring AC2) is by erasing the drive in recovery and reinstalling macOS. If you update to 11.0.1 in system preferences you will be just fine!
Hopefully this video will help anyone who is still having issues booting an Apple Silicon Mac into DFU mode. Let me know if you have any questions!
Your DFU method dont work
It works! Successfully done, using Macbook Air 2018 to target Macbook Pro (M1) 2020. A very clear and helpful guide video. Thank you very much.
Hi Mr.Macintosh, my start up disk is not coming up, do you have any advise?
What if instead of using the ipsw from the website, I try the MacOS firmware downloaded from the mac appstore?

Thanks for the video. BTW, for anyone interested, I just faced this issue but didn't have an older Mac. I did pull it off with VMware and Big Sur 11.1. It was a process but it worked without suprises. Good luck all. Saved a trip to visit 'the Geniuses' lol.
Hi, great video,
I have tried this process 4 times,
But target mac m1, keeps going back to activate mac stage, am i doing something wrong?
This is awesome, thank you so much. I actually used windows macOS VM and Apple configurator and it worked a treat surprisingly!!
Bro Can you help me
THANKSS UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU ! you save my life ! i was block on recovery lock pending my Jamf Trial period and don't have the recovery Key !
And i have to say that i tried over 10 times de combo touch to go in dfu and then !!! Succefully go in DFU mode and restore my M1 !
again Thank U🥰😇🥳
Wouldn't it be fast when using a USB 3 or even Thunderbolt cable? As far as I know the MacBook Pro charging cable only supports USB 2.0 speeds.
Just wanted to say thank you! I got caught out on the Ventura update and needed to roll back the changes. Couldn't have done it without this video and the resources you have provided. Big thanks!!!
Thanks for the video Mr Macintosh. It really helped out.
I was wondering if you can use the Apple Configurator that is iCloud locked?
Yes, you can BUT as soon as you boot it back up it will ask to activate and continue to be locked.
This video is a life saver. Counting on my own didn’t help. This video is genius. If you follow you will get the time sequence perfectly
DFU seems like a good approach but a little worried since I have never done it before and do not want to screw things up.
you were able downgraded ?
@@VideoyIvana No..I have not attempted it. Afraid it will not work and my M1 Mac computer will be useless.
@@CanesFan65 thank you for responding 🤗
do we really need type c cord? like i have usb type a with type c at the end or type c with type c only? i have macbook air it doesnt have type c so i dont know if this well work
I have a macbook pro 2020 A2251, but it doesn't have M1, it can work, I can't restore, always try to start a clean installation in catalina, download from the network, it doesn't finish and there are 2 minutes left, I've done a lot of things but I haven't been able to get it to work the Mac. I don't know how I can solve it. Thanks for the guide and help.
Amazing video and very helpful
i want to buy an ID locked m1 MBP so will the password disappear after I use your DFU mode method
Hello my friend great video.Formatting the M1 and re-installing MacOs will disable icloud? .Thanks in advance
Awesome video and tutorial! It helped on my new m1 mba get out of a jam today.
So I’m trying this but seems like my target m1 mac is not charging but it’s a solid orange light… and usb c charging is not working either? Any ideas
Hello and how are you, I have a kind a problem, I got a MacBook pro early 2020 i7 but when I try turn on, show me choose the network, what can I do.
Thoughts?
Straight and to the point, thank you VERY much.
It failed few times, because I had my battery empty. Thanks for the video 👍
Good video on how to do this. Can you make a video showing us how we can make our own MacOS IPSW files?
May I use this process to take the data from a macbook pro with m1 pro that has hardware issue and doesn't start?
My recently-revived M2 MacBook Air thanks you for this video. :-)
I have the M1 MBP and it did not work as it immediately booted whenever I touched the Power button. Damn.
Apple says: FIRST press and release JUST the Power button THEN use the 10sec combination use explained. Then it worked fine. Thx!
Excellent! Very useful, very well presented! Keep up the great work!
M1 MacBook Pro goes into recovery mode during every attempt? I’m pressing the four correct keys, before 10 seconds it begins opening recovery mode...
Successfully activated dfu mode by using the four button combination from recovery mode. In the options - recovery mode page.
Thanks Stephen! I had added this part to my deep dive video. I'm just glad you got it to work 👍
@@Mr.Macintosh you and me both.
Question - do Apple Silicon Macs have NVRAM and SMC like Intel Macs, and if so, how do you reset them?
Many thanks! Spent couple of hours trying to find a solution. Also had issues with Apple Configurator 2 on Catalina. Big Sur (prise) tho worked fine.
I have a 2021 M1 iMac and would like to know if I could safely try the process - entering DFU mode on it was a practice in case I have a serious issue
Can this be done on a Mac Pro 2009? I think I bricked my Mac Pro?
You, saved me a long trip to the Apple Store. Thanks!
Leo LaPorte spoke about you on his talk show today.
I found it David!!! 🤣ruclips.net/video/r7k7DSivixY/видео.html
Can this be done through thunderbolt 2 or a usb C to A cable? I have an M1 air with the exclamation mark and a 2015 air
You know it is the best workflow demonstration when you call Apple Enterprise support and they direct you to this film.
I’m getting a message saying “ The OS cannot be restored on this device “ when dragging the ipsw file in the dfu box . I’m using the restore option to get the recovery partition back to big sur
You Are My Hero Man ! You save my life 😀 ! Thank you for create this useful video !
And Again Thank you for your great Content and your good channel ❤️
it worked greatly man ! you are my hero bro
thank you so much for your great and easy solution man ❤️
Great video! How to download IPSW for INTEL MAC?
Your information is brilliant and applicable
Keep up the good work
I just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro M1 chip and it’s asking if I want macOS does this mean I’m fine & don’t have to reinstall anything.
Good this method will also allow u to remove efi locked code on ur t2 /m1 MacBook
