I heard the original by Tim Hardin, then tried covers by Ricky Nelson, Bobby Darin, Joan Baez and Johnny Cash.. The song is beautiful in every interpretation. But... When I heard Scott sing it, I don't need another version of it. This one tops them all.
Hi Emily, yes.it is Lulu the wee Scots lass from Glasgow....well spotted, she's the same age as me,68,and I had her head on my shoulder at a dance in Perth City Hall in,Scotland,in the mid-1960's.I think she was 16 as I was at that time,52 years ago now....wow...doesn't time fly,Murray.
Beautiful song and fascinating lyrics. The character being sung about is rather like me I think. Although Married her for Love, that is wishful thinking! Excellent song nevertheless, even though it is Scott Walker’s version.
Perhaps you know that this ditty was one of Tim Hardin's trophies, but as to style,, somehow Johnny Rivers who tackled about 10 genres in his ongoing career, give HIS cover a try, and you may become a fan with the man who "always did it his way" Easily over 1000 cuts since 1960 to today. So if you like him, he will keep you busy , as you wonder about his versatility and the guy Dylan had strong praise for re Positively 4th street, calling JR, his brother, bro.
Actually, the Danish popgroup LOLLIPOPS made a ripp-off of this song called SUZY MOORE. They incorporated a B-piece which makes the the song much more complete. In my opinion the Lollipops song is far better, coz of the addition of the B-part. Listen for yourself and judge.

Nothing touches Tim Hardin however.
Good version, Scott Walker. I think this is the version I learned on my guitar, ca. 1971.
Listen to bobby darin singing...
Had this album
Godlike genius!
Walker sings it in a country manner.
good bass playing
You're welcome, odoanna, and a Happy New Year to you too!
I like it. It may be even better than Rick Nelson's version. very debatable and is a close call for me.

Oh, Scott !
What a voice !
Yes, that's Lulu!
Is he not just one of talented signers that was taken from us early?
Very similar to Black Sheep Boy
have you heard the Johnny Cash version?
Best version in my opinion
