What a voice. Like Billy Ekstein...and yes I'm old enough to remember Ekstein. I'm 78. So sorry I never heard this young man until now. Loved this version of " Big Hurt". Better and different than Toni Fisher. Del Shannon... like this one best of all ! RIP mr Scott Walker. 🎶🕊🎶
So many of my personal pantheon of greats have died in the last few years. It just kills me. The big hurt, indeed. Goodbye, Long Daddy Green. You were the best, man.
This is an unbelievably great recording. Toni Fisher's recording of this song is one of my all time favorite songs, but this version eclipses it in my opinion. Scott Walker's unbelievably beautiful voice and a top arrangement make this the definitive version.
Wonderful Scott what I wouldn’t do to hear you sing to me, your voice is the best, I don’t think you realised just how good you were. Love you forever Arlene xxxxxx
One of my favourite Scott songs but then again they are all my favourites, miss you my wonderful man, can’t believe you’re not here, I will always love you Arlene xxxxxxxx
Now it begins, now that you've gone Needles and pins, twilight till dawn Watching that clock till you return Lighting that torch and watching it burn Now it begins, day after day This is my night, ticking away Waiting to hear footsteps that say "Love will appear and this time to stay" Oh, each time you go I try to pretend It's over at last This time the big hurt will end Now it begins, now that you've gone Needles and pins, twilight till dawn But if you go, come back again I wonder when, oh when will it end? The big hurt The big hurt The big hurt
His voice is beautiful. Only Jay Black's voice can compare.. His version of The Big Hurt is even better than the original. It builds into a crescendo of passion.
funny, I knew this song only by the version of Susan Rafey, which is probably one of the most obscure ones. Now here I have found at least five different interpretations and finally even Scott Walker's
Thanx again Guida x x x Another great great track - love the original but love the echo drums and Scots wonderful phrasing ( as aposed to the originals Phasing ) lol
He's right in the same category as Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstein. Very rich, creamy, honey-sounding voice. Don't understand why he didn't make it big. Something was seriously wrong!!
+Sylvia Carlson He had his share of success at a member of the Walker Brothers. While his solo work had only a cult following, that cult included Brian Eno, David Bowie and Midge Ure. He indirectly inspired the "new romantic" style that dominated much of the New-Wave music of the 1980s.
Sylvia, he actually did make big so there is nothing seriously wrong. He had two number one's with the Walker Brothers, who were absolutely massive here in the UK. When he went solo, his albums sold hugely, especially Scott 2, which topped the charts. On top of this, he was given his own tv show. Hardly a disappointing career eh?
Walker's legend IS a result of his solo work. And he has the awards to show for it. His first solo album, my favourite album of anyone, was also number 1 in the charts.
Sylvia Carlson he did make it big in his own way. Scott had a career which most musicians would need 3 lifetimes to complete. In a boy band with screaming fans then as a solo artist and finally as an an avant gard musician. When most musicians of his generation are all but forgotten the music of scott walker will still be remembered and will still be being played.....he is a strange and unique artist who defies classification...try listening to the sun ain’t gonna shine followed by EpiZootics! Its hard to imagine they are the same person.....
aka "Mad Dad" As a DJ for many, many years, myself and others in the profession all agree that this Scott Walker version is a nice sound to the song but Toni Fisher's version still takes top billing.
The best version by far. The female singers, Tony Fisher included, all screamed rather than sang the song and put out force rather than melody and lyrics.
I've always admired Scott Walker for his tendency to follow his own muse, consequences be damned. I must admit though there are times he sounds a bit too much like Matt Monro, and I've yet to be decide whether that's a good or a bad thing. That being said, his best and greatest song in my opinion remains to be "Jackie", an upbeat tune composed by Jacques Brel.
In the past four decades somehow I'd never connected the Toni Fisher version (which I'd totally forgotten about) with Scott's version. The Fisher one sounds far too tinny and too much like the Chip Monks for my taste. For those with taste and discernment best stick with the classy Scott.
+Wally Toynbee The "tinnyness" was the claim-to-fame of the Fisher version; the flanging effect was accidentally introduced when mixing the stereo version of the record and they decided to leave it in. That record inspired the use of the same effect on "Ichichoo Park", "Suspicious Minds", "You are everything.", "Turn To Stone", and more records than I could ever name.
My God....he just OWNS this, with sheer ease. He is in total VOCAL CONTROL. So smooth, but with the right amount of intensity. Unbelievable!
Stellar version by the late, great Scott Walker.❤❤❤😢
Proof that 'easy listening' can really be art. Mention has to be made of the mind-boggling arrangement by the great Wally Stott, later Angela Morley.
RIP Scott! You will be greatly missed.
In my opinion, the greatest male singer of the rock era. With the right material he wipes the floor with any one of his contemporaries
Extremely high quality.
Beautiful man beautiful voice ❤️ RIP Scott 💔 My big hurt now that you’re gone😢
How, oh how, does he do it?
Scott makes this MOR song absolutely thrilling. What an artist.
A lovely clear version of this over recorded song. Scott Walker is blessed with a beautiful voice.
Scott walker always sounds so good on these soundtrack type songs.his voice was made for these
You can do no wrong
R.i.p beautiful man 💔💔

absolute perfection...luv scott luv toni both versions but if i had to choose...scott
Absolutely Beautiful....What a voice !!
David Bowie said Scott Walker was a big influence on his vocal style.
One of my favourite Scott songs but then again they are all my favourites, miss you my wonderful man, can’t believe you’re not here, I will always love you Arlene xxxxxxxx
This album was my late teens …still sounds marvellous x
I'm a rock n roll guy but this fantastic.
I would say he has a few songs that are very rock, like "Shutout," "Get Behind Me," and "30th Century" to name a few. Also "The Plague."
@@therealgman4321 also Nite Flights, Fat Mama Kick. Just throwing that out there, as I'm also a rock n roll guy who digs the hell outta Scott's stuff.
I didn’t know that Scott covered the Big Hurt
Puts his all into it
Although I prefer Toni Fisher's version, you can't deny his beautiful voice!
I like the string arrangement on this song. Adds a lot to the song. The French horns toward the end are amazing, too.
Featured on BBC Radio 2 on Monday 11 December 2017 in Marc Almond's Torch Song Trilogy. I had never heard it before so I came here to find it again.
My third time adding a comment. This song and Scott's voice just blow me away.
Don't it!
Now it begins, now that you've gone
Needles and pins, twilight till dawn
Watching that clock till you return
Lighting that torch and watching it burn
Now it begins, day after day
This is my night, ticking away
Waiting to hear footsteps that say
"Love will appear and this time to stay"
Oh, each time you go
I try to pretend
It's over at last
This time the big hurt will end
Now it begins, now that you've gone
Needles and pins, twilight till dawn
But if you go, come back again
I wonder when, oh when will it end?
The big hurt
The big hurt
The big hurt
A voice like this, he was totally mismanaged.
Scott's version is pure pop. Almost a Billy Eckstein delivery. It is great, but
Miss Toni Fisher owns this song. Always has, always will.
Amen brother.
Absolutely!!
belle chanson par Scott Walker, félicitations

And so why didn't Johnny Hartman make it big -- Oh but in our books they certainly did. I love also Mr. Eckstein. 6/2019

Bond theme anyone?
Sounds like he influenced Bowie
Yep, huge influence on Bowie.
Yup..he did...check out scott wishing Bowie a happy birthday on radio....Bowie is speechless....its on RUclips
Thanks for your great comment, jammy.
And I agree with you 100%! :)
He is absolutely amazing. Neill Hannon from The Divine Comedy is obviously a fan to pretty similar. Sweet vocals though...
Well said.
My friend's grandfather wrote this.
He was Wayne Shanklin, the most famous of whose songs were rendered by Piaf.

a love that wanted to be... a love that would..... be a love to the end... how many needles and pins......
pieces we become waiting for llov e to show up for us again..... the go we the begins again......
With a few Bond string segments this could have been a good James Bond Movie Theme.
Scott sings it like Sinatra , and is in every way equal to Frank.
I love Scott but, I prefer the original Tony Fisher`s❤
Really great version but Susann Farrar nails it to it's fullest potential (IMHO)
The best version by far. The female singers, Tony Fisher included, all screamed rather than sang the song and put out force rather than melody and lyrics.
Toni Fisher so rules.
@psychodamned hehe :) You're always very welcome, Stu! xxxx
So different to Del Shannon version
That´s good, but I prefer this song with Miss Tony Fisher
Not bad.I would have liked to have heard Kathy Kirby do this;it was her kind of tune.I do like the chart behind him.

Great record but Miss Toni Fisher version is better in my opinion
Sorry, but Miss Toni Fisher is probably spinning in her grave.
This blows….
Toni Fisher is turning over in her grave. This is awful.
I DON'TMEAN TO BE NERGAITIVE, BUT THIS IS TERRIBLE !!!
