Gandalf is from "Escape from Orthanc" set (I believe that was the name, it was my very first lotr set), it also came with Saruman, Gwaihir and the Palantir
Nice build! In my memory Balrogs don't have wings. Think GW made them so we can use these in conversions of other minis we try to build (dragon, demon prince). -->More people will buy the balrog because of the wings.
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I even have full sleeve Tattoo from the movies. Your model is outstanding. I've helped create with a friend a studio scale Star Destroyer. Your model captures that moment in the films so well. I'd give anything to own a Lord of the Rings diorama like this. I do have an 8' cave troll I made though. Have a great Christmas 🎄 🎅

Amazing build! I really enjoyed watching the transition from pink foam to epic LOTR scenery. :) BTW: Tried joining your Discord, but the link is expired. :(
To be fair on the whole wings or no wings; I was surprised when I re-read the Fellowship not long ago the only to discover that it says both 'like wings' and also a few paragraphs later it says 'its' wings. So in truth Durin's Bane has wings; wings of shadow... 'His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings.' '... and its wings were spread from wall to wall...' But i can certainly see why people think of them as physical wings, the way it is written.
The exact quote is "... and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings." But soon after it says that "suddenly it drew itself up to a great height, and its wings were spread from wall to wall". Verdict: it definitely has wings, but their substance seems to be mostly shadow.
Thanks for engaging in the debate!! Did you watch the bit where I talk about these passages specifically ? It comes at 13:15 in the video... but, this is a technique that Tolkien uses a lot in his writings. He first lays the seed with a simile or a literary trope to give clear indication that the thing he is talking about is "like" something. A comparison. Moving forward from that, because he has established it as a comparison he then refers to it in a metaphorical sense. So the second time round he mentions wings I believe he is actually using a metaphor. This would explain why Durins Bane falls instead of flies at the bridge of Khazad Dum. It also explains why Gothmog the Balrog falls instead of flying when he faced Ecthelion. Or when the people are fleeing Gondolin and are attacked by a Balrog and Glorfindel fights the Balrog.... again the cause of death, falling from a great height. Also in these 2 earlier passages where Balrogs are mentioned the Balrogs are not described as having wings, which would be mentioned as those texts predate The Bridge Of Khazad Dum so you would be describing the creature. Generally creatures with wings fly they don't fall. Unless you come to the argument from the premis that there are flightless birds that exist so there for the Balrog could be winged and flightless... Which would make the Balrog a giant firey penguin. Without flight the wings are pointless. Why would Melkor create creatures with wings that could not fly?
@@Nat1videos All excellent points, and I did watch the whole video. I always felt that the speed with which the Balrogs apparently responded when Morgoth was assailed by Ungoliant, crossing the wide expanse of Hithlum fast enough to come timely to their dark lord's aid, suggests a speed of movement only wings could provide. But that is of course open to debate. As for the falling argument, Eagles and Dragons were also slain in battles and crashed spectacularly to the ground, and they definitely had wings. Alas we cannot ask the master himself, but I suspect even if he were still with us he would not have been inclined to answer this question to anyone's satisfaction. BTW, superb build, you are one of my favorite terrain crafters.
@@bradcraig6676 You make excellent arguments for your point of view! This was a pleasure to read this morning :D hmmmm it seems I will probably not leave you convinced...One thing that is for sure though is that wings do look cool. I really like the way Peter Jackson kind of went half way , with the bone structure there surrounded by shadow smoke and flame... I think he did it justice. Makes for a fun debate though! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to write down your thoughts !! :D
@@Nat1videos I agree that Jackson arrived at a great compromise solution with the skeletal wings. I also enjoyed this interaction! Looking forward to many more awesome videos and possibly some more informed debates.
@@bradcraig6676 Awesome ! I'd like to include more stuff like that in my videos in the future... need some good ideas that could also tie in around craft projects. Any ideas ..? lol
I'd say the question if Balrogs have Wings or not is up to eachs own interpretation of that passage. But I want to add, the german translation for the Fellowship is much clearer in supporting the non-wings-theory. And that's the Escape from Orthanc Gandalf, isn't it? Also: That's another absolutly epic build, great work!
I don't know if, if you translate it back to english, the sense translates with it. But with the pretty exact language that German is, it is pretty clear, he talks about the shadows and when the "wings" spread that they become a cloud of darkness. It's absolutly clear, can't be read in any other way :D
This turned out great! Thanks for giving me a shoutout, you definitely outdid the scale of my project. Well done!

Thanks mate! Yeah I did consider that, I may end up adding those details later... I'm sure I have a mini sword lying around that I can butcher
Amazing looking 'diorama' ! Am into LOTR at the moment and this is great inspiration.
Awesome!! Glad you enjoyed it :D
Gandalf is from "Escape from Orthanc" set (I believe that was the name, it was my very first lotr set), it also came with Saruman, Gwaihir and the Palantir
Spot on!
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice build
Thanks Zachary :D
Nice build!
In my memory Balrogs don't have wings. Think GW made them so we can use these in conversions of other minis we try to build (dragon, demon prince). -->More people will buy the balrog because of the wings.
Yeah I think we are on the same page with that :D
This is amazing
Thank you so much ! :D
Tu Truly amazing !
Thank you :D
What the heck this is amazing
Thank you :D
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I even have full sleeve Tattoo from the movies. Your model is outstanding. I've helped create with a friend a studio scale Star Destroyer. Your model captures that moment in the films so well. I'd give anything to own a Lord of the Rings diorama like this. I do have an 8' cave troll I made though. Have a great Christmas 🎄 🎅
Thanks Christian! I have considered some LOTR tattoos myself.... just can't decide what to get. Do you have Sauron ...?
Would love to know where you got the rope light from I want to make one myself
What the hell amazing vid man I love it I am still yet to craft properly and make something as cool as this it’s beautiful pal and on the subject of inspiration you are a hobby hero yourself pal never forget that top draw chefs kiss
Thanks so much mate !! What is your dream build? Start planning and make it happen ;)
@@Nat1videos I wouldn’t no where to start I’m wanting to do a army’s on parade for 2023 so it will probably be that I’ll be sure to get advice on the discord as it involves a Aztec temple waste land vibe
@@tabletopreadyminis8786 That sounds really cool! Yeah definitely get that rolling in the Discord, I am sure there will be loads of useful tips from the group !
Amazing build! I really enjoyed watching the transition from pink foam to epic LOTR scenery. :)
BTW: Tried joining your Discord, but the link is expired. :(
Thank you!! Oh yeah, the links keep expiring.... try this one instead :)

@@Nat1videos This one worked. Thank you! :)
To be fair on the whole wings or no wings; I was surprised when I re-read the Fellowship not long ago the only to discover that it says both 'like wings' and also a few paragraphs later it says 'its' wings. So in truth Durin's Bane has wings; wings of shadow...
'His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings.'
'... and its wings were spread from wall to wall...'
But i can certainly see why people think of them as physical wings, the way it is written.
Thanks for the comment !
:D
I always felt that the speed with which the Balrogs apparently responded when Morgoth was assailed by
Ungoliant, crossing the wide expanse of Hithlum fast enough to come timely to their dark lord's aid, suggests a speed of movement only wings could provide.
Thats a fair point! I would be interested in tat German translation if you have the time ...? Thanks for watching ! :D
@@Nat1videos I'll write it down as soon as I get home from work :)
I don't know if, if you translate it back to english, the sense translates with it. But with the pretty exact language that German is, it is pretty clear, he talks about the shadows and when the "wings" spread that they become a cloud of darkness. It's absolutly clear, can't be read in any other way :D
@@Old_Shatterhans Amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to write that out and explaining! Really appreciate it :D
