- Some years ago I was part of a little Hawaiian string band. We called ourselves "Kawili" because we were a mixed up bunch and because our `ukulele player's family heritage included catching birds so we fit both definitions of the word.
Sadly our group did not survive the passing of our lead singer, Shaun Gavagan, who was felled by heart disease far too early. I learned lots of Hawaiian songs I might never have tried because Shaun wanted to sing them with the result that my playing took a big step forward thanks to Shaun. One of the songs I learned was "Maui Boy" which seemed as if it had been written to describe Shaun and these days I do the song often with him in mind.
The song is bouncy and light, a nice run through some jazzy chords, just the kind of thing I like. It's often done as part of a medley with "Maui Girl" but that song doesn't have the same attraction for me. I'll just keep jumping through the changes and thinking of those great times with the Maui boy.
I recorded this song with my Martin OM-18GE in taropatch open G tuning (D G D G B D from low pitch to high). I used a pair of Schoeps CMC64 cardioid condensers in a spaced pair and plugged them into my Zoom F6 recorder. Then I used REAPER to tweak the audio a bit. I shot video with a Panasonic Lumix GH4 and GH5, then used Edius 9 to combine the audio and video and edit the result.

I was introduced to your music by the Kawili video of Island Style. That led to me playing slack key and learning that song. My wife loved that song so much she learned uke. Now one of our daughters plays ukelele too. Such magic from you, Shaun, and the other gentleman. I love this song too!

Perhaps you edited out your question about the reverb? I almost never do any editing beyond a touch of EQ and some gain adjustment, but on this track I did slap on a bit of REAverbate, their algorithmic reverb plug.
