- "Kaula `Ili" is a slack key classic thanks to the gorgeous versions by Sonny Chillingworth. You can hear his recordings on RUclips: • Kaula 'Ili and
• Kaula Ili
I''ve done a brief tutorial showing a vesion of "Kaula `Ili" in taropatch open G tuning. The sample verse is in the same family as the video I shot with Ledward Kaapana: • Kaula `Ili (The Rawhid...
I used my Martin OM-18GE tuned to taropatch open G (D G D G B D). I used a single Shure KSM141 for all the recording, plugged into the Zoom F6. I edited the video in Edius 9 including adjusting the audio volumes.
Thank you for breaking it down enough for us beginners. Beautiful.
I'm grateful for the folks who visit and comment here, thanks.
Fran

I hope you have fun with it, Ben.

Mahalo nui, Fran ! I always enjoy when you take the time to do a tutorial. 🙃
Thanks Robert, I'm thinking I should do a few more of those in the future.
Fran
Thank you Fran, I have already started working on it, so this is an early Christmas present for me, diolch yn fawr iawn.
Make it your own, David.
Fran

Fran
Thanks for the tutorial. I am a folk/blues/county/ragtime fingerpicker just wading into these beautiful waters.
I hope you have fun with your exploration of slack key. If you have a steady thumb you'll be slackin' in not time. I have a playlist of tutorials I've created: ruclips.net/video/ivTtnSNWmxc/видео.html and there are several other sources on RUclips - look for Ozzie Kotani and Harry Koizumi among others.
Fran
@@franguidry I'm on it!. I'm gonna be a slacker! Thanks
Big Mahalo Fran! You have a great style, and any Ki Ho'alu tutorials will be greatly appreciated! Maybe you can talk Led into a tutorial on his licks, vamps etc.
Terry, have you checked out the video on Homespun Music? It has exactly what you're asking for.
Fran
@@franguidry Yep...Just don't find anything anywhere with you in it. I think you have a great style and certain evolved level of subtle /sophisticated technique. Your syncope is really exceptional. I have lots of Slack Key Instruction Books, including the one with Led and Brozeman. If you have any instruction books/CDs/online classes of your own or plan to in the future, by all means give me a holler. Until then, I'll 'kanikapila' here with ya on your RUclips videos. I'll be On Oahu, West Side Waianae permanently by Jan. next yr. Hope to meet you then. Big Mahalo for all your great contributions to Ki Ho'alu!
@@terryrisberg All the best on your move, Terry. We probably won't be back to Hawai`i until next spring. Let's try to get together then.
Fran
Great breakdown of the mele, Fran!
I shot the tune four or five times and never did manage to do it the same way (grin).
Fran
@@franguidry Keeps it interesting!
Great song. You have a lovely and friendly countenance. If I played any slack key at all I would do this. But alas, I am more of a rhythm guitar player and a singer. You are a good teacher. Nice and slow for those who aren't getting it right away. Carry on.
Thanks for taking a moment to leave a comment Sandra.
Fran
AWESOME. By the way who is the wahine that sang this with Sonny on the Waimea Cowboy album? Mahalo for this great video.
Thanks for visiting. I'm sorry but I don't know any of the other performers on that album and I was unable to find that information online.
Fran
Truly beautiful! Love the “teaching” so clearly MALHALO 🏄👍🏻🇺🇸😎
I hope you have lots of fun with this Ken.
