Lanikai Slack - A Solo Version

- Time really does fly when you're an old fogey like me, it's hard to believe that the original "Lanikai Slack" was composed, played, and recorded eight years ago. We were enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Kailua Beach Park and naturally we brought guitars. Ledward fired up his old Martin 000-16 and this lovely collection of notes poured out, he was making up a new slack key tune on the fly. We named the tune for the Lanikai boat ramp just across the parking lot and people have enjoyed it ever since, judging by the more than 100,000 views and the many comments.
We'll be heading back to Kailua in a few weeks so I'm trying to make sure my fingers are ready for the adventure. While I was fooling around with songs it occurred to me that I should add this piece to my collection of Ledward originals. It's a bit humbling to find that it took me a couple of weeks to get comfortable with a song that Led made up in seconds - the difference between a musical genius and a student I suppose. When I told Led I was working on his song he reminded me that if I did things a little differently from him it was part of making the song my own, so I gave myself some leeway. The effort was certainly worth it to me, it's so sweet to have a new melody bouncing around in my head and flowing out of the guitar and I'm looking forward to doing another duet version with Led.
I played the piece on my Martin OM-18GE, tuned to taropatch open G (D G D G B D from low pitch to high). I set up a pair of Schoeps CMC64 mics in a spaced pair and recorded the result on the Zoom F6, then mixed the tracks in REAPER. I used a pair of Panasonic Lumix GH4 cameras for the video then compiled the whole thing in Edius 9.
Thank you to both you and Led for sharing your gifts and passion for music with the world. Soooo beautiful!!!!!
So nice to hear from you, thanks for visiting and commenting. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to capture and share some of Led's artistry in these videos.

Oh my….I can hear the surf and feel the breeze. Priceless touch and sound as always! MAHALO!!!!🏄👍🏻🇺🇸😎
Ken, you're always too generous with your comments, but I don't mind (grin). I think Ledward did catch some of the feel of that beach in his spontaneous composition. I'm hoping we'll be playing it a bit more often in the future.
Fran
Lovely!!
Thanks, it's a lot of fun to play.
Fran
One of my favorites that you and Ledward played! Your solo is so nicely done. As always, thanks for posting.

This nahenahe music also reminds me of playing with Mr.Kaapana ♪
Nobody makes a guitar sing like Ledward Kaapana, I'm so fortunate to be able to accompany him and learn from him.
Fran
Wonderful tune composed by Mr. Led. and played fantastically by Mr. Fran. Well done!

Eh, Fran! Great job! Not too far from where I stayed a few years ago!

Fran
I love the old style, especially by a master such as yourself and I'm willing to bet Led considers you one (stiff fingers and all)
Thanks Walter, but I'm pretty sure Led thinks of me as a student. I sure think of myself that way, and I'm always grateful to have him for a teacher.
Fran
Wow! That was just beautiful Fran. I thoroughly enjoyed the piece. For a change we are having some beautiful weather in Ireland - perfect for this. Love your videos 👍👍
