"Lil`u E" - Slack Key in the Living Room

- "Lili`u E" is an enduring classic of Hawaiian music, popular for hula both kahiko and `auana, as a chant or a song, and as a slack key instrumental. The song has an interesting history indeed, originally written for Princess Kina`u. When Queen Lili`uokalani was elected to the throne composer Antone Kaoʻo modified his chant to honor her. Some years later John Kaulia wrote a melody for the existing lyrics, giving us the two versions we enjoy today.
Ledward has recorded "Lili`u E" several times as an instrumental. Other artists doing instrumental versions include Cyril Pahinui, Leonard Kwan, and Ozzie Kotani. The version we are doing in this duet is inspired by his arrangement on his "The Legend" CD. We are both playing in taropatch open G tuning (D G D G B D) from lowest pitch to highest. Folks who have watched other videos from our living room might notice that we have rearranged slightly.
The audio for this recording was captured using a pair of Shure KSM141 mics in cardioid configuration and connected to a Zoom F6 recorder using their 32 bit float WAV format. The audio was adjusted for level in REAPER then the video was edited in Edius. No reverb or other effects were used except for a bit of EQ. The video was recorded with a pair of Panasonic Lumix GH4 cameras.
You guys do more for the world than all the yabbering of the politicians. Just beautiful.
Thanks, Nick, so glad you're enjoying the music.

👏👍 ♥️
Hey, thanks for bringing this one to the surface. It's a great example of the pleasures of a two chord song - the simple structure opens up space for all manner of exploration and this clip was a pretty successful journey (grin).

Great stuff, Fran. Lovely accompaniment.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Led both in Hawaii and in Chicago.
Thanks, Eric. Seeing Led live is a whole 'nother experience. As many hours as we've played together he never fails to come up with great new stuff.

This music takes me to a place where there are soft winds and clear water streams.

Love the guitar playing, but that palm tree might be the most bad ass thing I’ve ever seen.
You made my wife's day, Dave, mine too actually. We found that in Palm Springs and lugged it home in the back seat of our car and it has been our favorite lamp ever since.

Great to hear you guys. Are you playing in Concord w/Led next week?
Yes indeed, we'll be at the Cue on Saturday. Thursday at the Throckmorton in Mill Valley, Friday at the Palms in Winters, and Sunday at Pacifica Performances. Busy weekend but plenty of fun makes it worth the travel. Hope you can join us at the Cue.

What kind of Martin guitar are you using gentlemen?
Serge, sorry I missed this question. I'm using a Martin OM-18GE, which is a long scale with a wide nut and saddle, a mahogany 000 body, and a red spruce top with scalloped bracing. Led's Martin 000-16 is also a mahogany 000 body and long scale, but he has a narrower nut and saddle and a sitka top - I think his guitar has straight rather than scalloped bracing. The 000-16 name has since been applied to some rather different guitars over the years. The version Led plays is the earliest, built for a few years in the early 90s.
