Aloha ʻIa No ʻO Maui - Led Kaapana and Fran Guidry

- This great old Maui praise song is one of our favorite jam numbers. Led says one of his uncles made this his signature tune and Led learned the basic arrangement from him.
The composer, Alice Johnson, was a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band and was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
Led is a big fan of my Kathy Wingert guitar so he asked to do a few tunes with the Model EC as a tribute to the talented builder. I honestly don't mind spending time with my Martin OM and it was great fun to hear the tone Led pulled from the rosewood and spruce of the Wingert.
Both guitars are tuned to taropatch open G: D G D G B D from low pitch to high.
I set up two Panasonic Lumix GH4 cameras for this shoot, but decided to only use one for the final clip. One of the gang at taropatch.net mentioned wanting to watch the hands on the guitar without a lot of fancy editing getting in the way, so I left out all the cuts and zooms and pans and just let the music flow.
To make sure the audio was respectable I hooked up a pair of Schoeps CMC641 mics to the Zoom H6. I edited the clip in Edius.
My baby boy adores this song and lights up *every* time I play it for him. Thank you for bringing him so much joy!
What a sweet comment, thanks so much for visiting. There does seem to be something magical about this tune. Led says one of his aunties used to sing this one at family parties and he always loved the melody.
Fran
Ihr beide seid zwei wunderbare Männer. So tolle Musik habe ich in meinem ganzen langen Leben noch nicht gehört, danke, danke!
I am very glad you found our channel, thank you for your generous and kind comment. I hope you enjoy many more of our clips.
Fran
You two are best friends forever.
I hope to enjoy Mr. Kaapana’s concert next Feb at Honey’s.
The show at Honey's is like visiting family, I think you'll have a fantastic time.
Fran
It is the kind of music in a calm evening as heat of the sun gradually mellows.
Thanks for visiting and commenting. There is something special about this simple little tune, it invites relaxed fun playing and listening.
Fran
You guys are magic...keep it up!
You're very kind, Sam. Thanks for visiting.
Fran
WOW, I found another version of this song MAHALO again I’m on lanai playing
Play along, play along. Since we've done this song so many times in so many different ways it made sense to create a playlist just for this song, so here it is: ruclips.net/p/PLKRxWcC_LftfT9a1lnvWhV9VppJhh5lqG
Fran
You don’t know how much it’s helping me improve my playing I play this song every night. Another good one is Holoholo Kaa with you driving to see Ledward that’s another one I play every night. MAHALO for the playlist
Led's endless idea bank gives it's share again!
JP, you hit it. As many times as we've played that song, Led keeps coming up with new ways to surprise me.
Fran
JP, yeah, he absolutely blows my mind with his ability to improvise.
Beautiful Song
I agree with all of the prior comments. You two are incredible. I really think that you should consider taking your act on the road. Har har !!!!
I listen to you beautiful angels on earth! Mahalo🤗😎😘
The sound and chemistry you two guys have is amazing. Always a pleasure!!
Thanks, Patrick. When I first started playing with Led I hoped to figure out a way to complement and support him. He's been wonderfully patient and I think I'm starting to find the groove.
Fran
Yes, it really is.
Fran, Just had to tell you how much I love your music production. I've been listening and watching you and Led for many years now enjoying it so much. No matter the environment, indoors or outdoors, the audio/videos you produce are so much more superior than most! Aloha! Mahalo!
Mein Gott, wie schön!!
It's a real pleasure to watch and listen to you guys. You are able to hide the fact that this is work so well. Keep on slackin'!!!
Driving for hours through traffic and rain is work. Sitting around in the living room banging on guitars is pure fun! Thanks for joining us, Alan.
Fran
Good way foa start one morning. Mahalo Fran and Unca Led.
Thanks Jared, have a great day.
Fran
If there is anything better than a master slack key playing , it is two!! Thanks for the beautiful music!
Thanks for your kind comment, so glad you enjoyed the clip.
Fran
Sitting here in Round rock TX. enjoying Led and Fran play me back to the islands once again. Love seeing these two and the rapport they have while playing .
Thanks, Charles. It's great having Led visit and stay at our home in California, we can hopefully really dial in the video and audio. But there's something special about shooting down at the beach in Kailua with all the folks having fun all around us.
Fran
I have watched this ???? times and every time get chills and joy! Spent 10 days in Kauai in '99, and will forever love the songs of the islands. LOVE IZ! Led and Fran are the ultimate masters! Thanks!
You're too kind by far, Ken. Led is certainly one of the all time masters but I'm only a very fortunate and grateful student. I must admit, though, that this is a pretty fun clip, we synced up pretty well and Led came out with some outrageously good stuff.
Fran
Wow Fran! Thanks for response! I am 78...have owned 5 Martins and a great one from Ireland! Your tuning info is appreciated. Have a dear old friend in Walnut Creek...he owns my 1973 Martin D-45. Bless you both! Keep the music coming!
Fran your solo was over the top spot on in concert with Led .., you two are great together. More like this please.., Aloha from Texas !
Aloha to you, James. There's something about this simple little song that inspires fun on the guitar, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Fran
Such a fun time you two have together, and much enjoyment for your fans. Thanx for posting the videos Fran.
Those moments when we get out the guitars and try to tickle each other are some of the best. Thanks for joining us.
Fran
Fabulous just Fabulous!!!
I consider myself wonderfully lucky to be able to play alongside Led. I'm always happy to hear that we've brought a little enjoyment to people.
Fran
Man, that's sweet music. Great artists with great guitars!
Thanks Arthur. Obviously it's great fun to play with Ledward any time and any tune, but this wonderful song may be our most favorite. Maybe. (grin)
Fran
Thanks for sharing your fun. 😊❤️

So inspiring to hear and see you play together :) Always motivates me to practice hard and become better in playing Slack Key.
Thank you for a very kind comment, I'm always hoping that I'm contributing to more slack key in the world.
Fran
Everything you do is wonderful! This being only the one I am enjoying this moment. Thanks for the music and the life attitude.
Thanks so much for such a kind comment.
Fran
Thanks so much to both of you for recording so many fabulous slack key duets, and to Fran for recording them. They are most enjoyable to listen to, and also outstanding learning aids. Very much appreciated!
Thanks for taking the time to visit and comment. So glad to hear that these clips are a learning aid.
Fran
Outstanding!

@@thumbstruck I don't usually travel with Led outside of driving distance, but if I wind up in Seattle with our without him I'll give you a shout.
Fran
@@franguidry Distance gets in the way!
Is there anything better than this? It will take some time to try and find it.
Ken, thanks for your kindness. There is a world of exquisite music out there, I'm glad you find time to enjoy our little clips.
Fran
Awesome! LOL. Led has me laughing hard.....so funny. I love it. :)
Pure fun, isn't it?
Fran
Sweet as apple pie
Glad you enjoyed it, this is one of our top ten when Led and I play together.
Fran
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Aloha, Jennifer.
Fran
Nimrod and I are planning to play it on "CHILD DAY" NOV. 30, 2024
I hope you have a lot of fun playing it.
Fran
Why do Led's guitars always have a few thousand more notes than mine ???????
And why are they always louder and sweeter sounding than mine, even when the guitar he's playing belongs to me???
Fran
@@franguidry seems like that every time someone picks up one of my guitars, Fran. LOL
Superb ! Gréât Sound too ! Wharf is your équipement for recording ? 👍😊gqj
Check the description, I usually try to document the gear. In this case I'm using a pair of Schoeps CMC641 hypercardioid mics into a Zoom H6 recorder. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix GH4.
Fran
Fran, the sound quality is fantastic as is the performance. I have to ask about the exquisite framed photo behind you. Did you take the photo (if it is a photo) or did you purchase it from someone? If it is a print that is available, I would love to have it in my home. My wife and I visited Maui and will always remember the spirit of aloha. The best nine days of my life.
Ken, that print is by Kim Taylor Reece kimtaylorreece.com/ A friend found this picture at a garage sale and bought it for us. I think you'll be able to find the image at Kim's website.
Fran
@@franguidry Thanks so much for the information Fran. I did find the print which I think embodies the spirit of aloha that I experienced in my way too short trip to Maui. I am still loving the music however, including yours, which brings me back to that memorable time.
Fran, I believe Led has your best guitar
I'm willing to give up some time with the Wingert just to get to hear Ledward dance over the strings.
Fran

Sehr gute slack keye Musik
Einfach toll
Danke, thank you for visiting. I hope you find some other clips to enjoy.
Fran
Fran ..,what guitar did you use in this vidz.., it has beautiful tone and sustain
Thanks James, that's a Martin OM-18GE, one that Martin made for a few years then discontinued. I feel very fortunate to have it.
The guitar Led is playing is my Wingert Model E, another one that I feel very lucky to have captured.
Fran
HEY----EEEEEE----HA!! :)
Thanks, Terry, that little piece is just plain fun. I bet we've played it a hundred times or more and never did it the same way twice.
Fran
Unbelievable
@@franguidry Learning so much from you and Led in relation to improvising Ki Ho'alu...Mahalo Fran and give Led a BIG mahalo for sharing here.
Casi are you aware of a consultation meeting about the Awak Brdge in U. I am invited but I don't know the date and time. And ì also do not know whether it is accessible people with wheelchairs.
Fran, what model of OM???
It's an OM-18GE, I think these are currently out of production. It's a pretty close replica of a 1930 OM-18, with a chunky neck, 1 3/4 nut and 2 3/8 saddle, mahogany back and sides, red spruce top, 1/4" red spruce bracing.
I think you would have to order a custom or go for the very pricey OM-18 Authentic to get similar specs today.
Fran
@@franguidry .....Thanks, I have a 000-18GE, but all in all I prefer long scale. I’ll have to see if I can find one.
I reckon Led will claim your Wingert before long, Fran *LOL*
We'll see, Alan, but I'll put up a mighty struggle. The Wingert is my baby.
Fran
Does anyone mind if I call Led the "Chet" of slack-key?? Huh? Anyone mind??
If anyone might mind it might be Led, he's a pretty modest guy especially considering his talent. One funny thing - my videos mostly only show off his slack key style - he's also a great standard tuning player with a distinctive instrumental voice and a great range.
Thanks for stopping by and offering such a thoughtful comment.
Fran
@@franguidry Hello, Fran Guidry, Nice to receive your kind reply. I have many more such comments regarding Ledward Kaapana! I am a big fan and have several of his CD's. I don't recall exactly how I found out about or first heard him, but I do remember how I was introduced to slack-key guitar and Hawaiian-style music. Back in the late 90's, I picked up a couple of cassettes (remember those?) from a bargain bin at Walmart. They were of HAPA, and I played them to death!!!!
@@janebethshimon Jane, I read your lovely comments about the guitars Led was playing in a couple of other videos, my Wingert and my Walker. I assume you deleted the comments after you made them, but no need as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps you visited Kathy's website or Kim Walker's? Believe me, I bought my guitars long before they both became famous and so pricey. I'm very happy my friends are able to command such value, but I could never afford to buy from either of them today.
