- This old waltz was published by Charles E. King but appears to have been based on a song of the same name composed by Queen Liliʻuokalani.
The song was used in a stage production, "Prince of Hawai`i" and later became the theme song for a movie, "Bird of Paradise."
Sonny Chillingworth included the song on his "Endlessly" CD and my collection includes vocal versions by Elodia Kane and Gary Haleamau as well as an instrumental arrangement by Keola Beamer.
This duet arrangement is one Led and I have worked out over the last year or so, but of course it's a bit different each time we play the song. This video was shot at Kane`ohe Beach Park where we shared the early morning with the local chickens.
Led is playing his old faithful Martin 000-16 and I'm using my Martin OM-18V. We're both in taropatch tuning spelled D G D G B D from low pitch to high.
The audio was captured using the direct inputs on my Zoom H6. Video was shot with a pair of Panasonic Lumix GH4 cameras. All editing was done in Edius.
Soooo . . . *consults thesaurus* . . . aww, heck! Jus' soooo NICE! Slack-key perfection.
You're sooo nice to stop by and comment. Thanks for visiting.
Fran
I love this duet, thanks for posting! Led and Fran, I love the way your guitars support each other and you weave the melody around.
Thank you Angela. Learning to play with Led in a supportive way has been a great experience for me.
Fran
Nice rockin chair music on a sunny day in the shade with a cool iced mint crushed pinapple tea, oh play is again
We'll keep playing and you keep rocking. Thanks for stopping by.
Fran
Thank you for the beautiful music. I've been listening to slack key for many, many years and I still can't get over how just two acoustic guitars can produce so much sound. Mahalo.
Sitting there hearing Led I am amazed at how much music comes out of one guitar! (grin) Thanks for stopping by, Alan.
Fran
Two Martin acoustic guitars!!

So nani again! Love the tune!
Your Hawaiian is coming along nicely, JP. Have you heard Led do the Auntie Alice song called "Nani?"
Fran
You two always sound great together. Makes me keep on with my couple songs from the islands. Thanks, Don
Thanks Don, there really is something special about Hawaiian music I think.
Fran
Boys, that's truly beautiful. Something soothing to take in after a long week. Blessings
Glad to hear you find the music soothing, I think that relaxing quality is a big part of what drew me to slack key.
Fran
@@franguidry I have now on a few occasions forwarded you guys' videos to my granddaughters (6 and 4 years old) in Cape Town. It's like a little ritual between us. They always send back voice clips thanking grandpa for the songs, they love the beautiful Hawaiian guitar music.
@@johanweakley2658 Thank you for growing us some more Hawaiian music fans!
Fran
Thank you so much for listening to your sweet & comfortable harmony also this time♪
At Honey’s in this Feb, It was my third wonderful memory Mr.kaapana autographed my ukulele.
I wish your friendships forever.
I'm glad to hear you were able to visit Honey's, it is a special place when Led Kaapana performs there.
Fran

Adopted by Queen Liliuokalani’s brother, he showed talent for music and was very smart. At the age of 10 years old Charles E. King was sent to live with Queen Lili’uokalani so she could work teach him true royal Hawaiian music, lyrics were written in the Hawaiian language with a slow and breezy melody. Charles E. King went on to create over 200 of his own songs. Hawaiian Wedding Song was from his Hawaiian opera ‘Prince of Hawaii and the song was named The Hawaiian Love song, male voice in falsetto and the female voice in a low deep voice. This some Imi Au la ‘Oe was indeed written by Charles E. King, and was also known as King Serenade.
Cheryl, thanks so much for this history.
Fran
What a perfect duet for such a beautiful harmonic slack key sound!! I'm having a relaxing night because of these legendary musicians. Mahalo Nui!
There have been so many clips of Ledward's amazing playing that I'm starting to forget some of the jewels like this one. I was happy with my playing but there's just something deep and magical about the timing, touch, and phrasing that Ledward brings to his music. I'm beyond lucky to be able to play alongside him and capture some of his artistry on video. And thank you for reminding me about this clip.
Fran
@@franguidry Thank you for your reply, Mr. Guidry! I'm a big fan of you.
Mahalo for your site on RUclips. The music you and Led play together just raises my sequestered spirits. Brings 43 years of sweet memories back. Sigh.
Thanks for visiting and commenting, Sandra. Keep safe.
Fran
Thanks again Fran. Some years ago I 'accidentally' came across a tune by Led, and that made me crave for more information, knowledge and understanding of this music. Well, Led introduced me, but you have certainly inspired me over the years, not at least with your kind and helpful comments on 'Taro Patch' forum, as well as the information you gives on each video on tunings used.
Thanx for posting this wonderful song, the mellow ones are my favorites. It’s so nice listening to you and Led!
Thanks, Joan. We like the mellow ones too.
Fran
Mahalo you 2 ❤
So nice of you to visit and comment, mahalo to you.
Fran
Beautiful arrangement. I just love the way you two play together. The chickens do add visual color to the music. 😃
Part of the fun of exploring the windward side is the wildlife. Chickens and mongoose make up a large part of it.
Fran
This is really beautiful.Thank you !
Thank you for visiting and commenting, Emma.

Another beautiful duet. Fran you must have had a wonderful time in Hawaii ! Two new videos a month apart.
Thanx sharing your music.
Joan
You're right, Joan, our time in Hawai`i is a big highlight of our year. But having Led visit with us in Kaleponi is another kind of fun as well, and we're looking forward to that in a few weeks.
Fran
This is stunning!! So Nice!!! Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for visiting and commenting. It's very gratifying to have people enjoy these clips.

❤❤❤
That was a lot of fun to shoot, I just needed to get more chickens in the shot to really capture the flavor (grin).
Fran
@@franguidry you are so right!!
Gorgeous playing, as ever; you might want to consider using mics instead of going direct- there are hints of that thin electronic pickup sound... not too bad, but mics can surely better capture the sound of those fine guitars!
Thank you for posting this!
Hi, Bob. I definitely prefer mics over DI recording, but the wind is nearly constant in Hawai`i and my tools for wind protection don't work well enough so I'm usually forced to plug in direct when we record outside.
Fran
Fran Guidry actually, your pickup sounds really good; it’s Led’s that has a little of that “under saddle” sound
@@BobSoperJr I agree with you, Bob. My guitar actually has an internal mic that I think does a pretty good job, but for live stage use Led's undersaddle really fills the room a lot better than my internal mic.
I'm experimenting with a plugin to try to tame Led's pickup sound in these recordings, we'll see if I can come up with anything that works.
Fran
Nahenahe - the real spirit of ki ho'alu.
Thanks so much, Simon. Led can be as rowdy as any rock'n'roll or country guitar player, but he has a sweet nahenahe side that is unmatched. Playing alongside him is a constant lesson in making it mellow.
Fran
Malo lava
Thanks George.
Fran
Hello Fran: Could you please tell me wehat kind of strins you are using? The lower strings on my resonator guitar are too low to make the same sound! Thanks for your help!!
I use Elixir Nanoweb HD Lights, 80/20 formula. You should understand that I'm using an internal microphone (LR Baggs Lyric) so the sound is little different from the acoustic sound. But the HD LIght strings do have a heavier bottom string than standard lights.
