Kolomona Slack Key at Ho`omaluhia

  • Nedward Kaapana wrote this bouncy instrumental as a gift to Solomon Aikau, you can see him playing it here: • Da Hawaii Pidgin Bible...
    Ledward Kaapana often calls this tune when we play together and it was the first one we played when we set up for a shoot at the magnificent Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden at the foot of the Ko`olau in Kane`ohe. www1.honolulu....
    Note the appearance of a mongoose back by the tree line at about 3:54 into the video.
    We're playing in taropatch open G tuning, spelled D G D G B D from low to high.
    The audio was recorded using a Zoom H6 with its XY module, the included foam wind screen, and a Rycote furry screen over that. Video was captured using a Lumix GH3 on Ledward's side, a GM1 on my side, and a GX7 for the moving shot.
    Special thanks to Pat La`a for introducing us to this magnificent location and for manning the GX7 camera.
    All editing in Edius.

    Beautiful, I hope musicians nowadays use this kind of instruments. Instrument that bring peace to the soul and mind.

      Thank you for your generous comment. That feeling of peace and comfort is a big part of slack key for me as well. Even these up-tempo compositions have that feeling of coming home, I think. And of course, having one of the greatest slack key players of all time helps things along.

    Just turned 75 and bought myself a new guitar (gave up the guitar several years ago and sold my Martin) so I could fulfill a life-long dream to play Hawaiian slack key guitar. Watching these videos is both inspiring and daunting. This music and the way you guys play is all the religion I need.

    I am nearly 70 now but my old hunting eyes haven't let me down yet- who noticed the mongoose sneeking across the grass in the background huh? The beautiful music and the glorious backdrop almost had me distracted. Thanks for all of it guys. Right up there with the lake vid.

      We've had a few visitors catch the mongoose, I certainly didn't notice until they called my attention to it. That visit to the gorgeous Ho`omaluhia Garden was a wonderful example of things coming together just right. I've been back several times and have yet to recapture the magic.

      Sharon, please understand that I'm strictly an amateur. I don't do concerts, I barely do gigs at all. When I'm in Hawai`i my public performances consist of two or three songs done as a guest at shows by my friends. I usually show up when Led Kaapana or Mike Kaawa play at Honey's, they invite me up for a song or two or three.
      When I'm in California these same guys stay with us when they play in northern California, and I sometimes open their shows with three songs or so.
      I'm really flattered by your interest, I hope we'll meet sometime, but even more I hope you'll get to Hawai`i and enjoy the beauty of this place.

      +Muhammad Nur Hafiz Khamsani You have made a very wise choice, I think. This music is intricate enough to be interesting, but low stress enough to continue as one ages. My hands are too fragile to play rock'n'roll, but I can still play slack key for hours at a time.

      The Ho`omaluhiu Gardens are in Kane`ohe at the base of the Ko`olau. I've been told the area was once banana plantation, but has been turned into a combination flood control zone and botanical garden/park.

    What's the over/under on the number of guitars Ledward owns?

    • @franguidry
      @franguidry  4 года назад

      Not as many as one might think, I'd say. His main guitar is the Martin 000-16, followed by the little Guild. He has a Santa Cruz baritone and a Tacoma that don't get out much. And a couple of electrics. I think he still has the Martin cutaway dread that was his main for a while, but he sold the Taylor and the custom Ko`olau I believe.
      And of course there are a few `ukulele, with his main instruments being Chuck Moore beauties.

      @@franguidry Ah Fran, thanks for the thoughtful reply. I am an old Kailua boy who learned my chops studying Ray Kane tunes and practicing at Kalama beach. I love these videos of Led, and thanks for posting them. I just have noticed that he seems to have a new axe every video, and I can't say I don't understand. I leave my music room and when I come back the next day it always seems I have a few new guitars! Cheers and much aloha too you.

    Wonderfull Music! Mr Guidry, wich Strings are you using on your Guitar? Best regards from the Netherlands.

    • @franguidry
      @franguidry  5 лет назад +1

      Victor, I've been using Elixir Nanoweb strings for many years now. They last so much longer than non-coated strings that the overall cost is less and I think the sound is better. I like the 80/20 formula, while Led prefers the Phosphor Bronze. I use HD Light gauge while Led uses Mediums.
