Black Sand - Ledward Kaapana Slack Key Guitar

- Back before the lava came, the little village of Kalapana in the district of Puna on Hawai`i Island was known for three things: a magnificent black sand beach, the queen's bath, and a remarkable concentration of musicians. Members of the Kaapana and Konanui clans settled there, with Fred Punahoa, George Kaapana and his wife Tina among the most widely known. The parties were legendary, with various family members showing off their favorite numbers and jam sessions that went on for days.
Two of George and Tina's kids, the twin brothers Ledward and Nedward, went on to form Hui Ohana, a legendary group in Hawaiian music.
George Kaapana only recorded once, but he composed a number of slack key pieces that Ledward has kept alive in his repertoire. This tune was originally called "Portuguese Slack Key" (well, actually they used the traditional slang) and Ledward changed the name to honor the lost beaches of Kalapana and his small kid days. He recorded "Black Sand" for a CD of the same name, a nahenahe masterpiece still available from Dancing Cat Records.
We shot this duet in Ledward's backyard in Kane`ohe, on O`ahu. I faded the beginning and ending because of the noise of passing trucks and jet airplanes. I captured the wide shot on a Panasonic Lumix GH2, with a Sanyo Xacti HD2000 for the closeup. Ledward's audio was recorded on a Sony PCM-D50, while I used a Zoom Q3HD to record my guitar. All editing was done in Edius Neo. - Видеоклипы
Glad you liked the clip. It's a great honor to play these songs with Ledward.
Fran
Honestly, I could listen to this for years and years without taking a break.
BEAUTIFUL.
Thanks so much, it's an honor to be able to share Led's artistry with folks.
Fran
You are exactly right. If you fly into O`ahu and drive to Waikiki you would think it is any modern city, but when you get to the windward side you find you're in paradise.
Fran
Fran, another great post. Don't know if slack key gets any better than this. You and Ledward are both masters of your craft. On behalf of your many followers and supporters, I offer my sincere thanks for sharing your enormous talent and enthusiasm. All the best, Bob.
Thank you so much for sharing!
I grew up on the Big Island, and I remember Hui Ohana playing at lots of parties.
Led's guitar playing was a strong influence on my own playing, and Ned's bass lines were even more of an influence in my early days when I was a bassist for a couple of backyard bands.
Much mahalo!
Aloha , OMG Fran how awesome is this video!! You all sound great together. How fortunate you had this experience out in HI. I just finished a workshop taking lessons from Kumu Keola Beamer here in Wakine.Kona and I thought of you and dropped by to see how you were doing. Great video , Mahalo for sharing! Aloha ~JD Ukuleleman
The scenery couldn't be more perfect.
Glad you enjoyed the video. There are a couple more in the channel that I shot around Led's home. And the Hawaii PBS channel has a couple of hours of Led playing with three of his sisters at the house.
Fran
Fran Guidry
I'll be definitely watching those as well, thank you and enjoy these good vibes from Philly, peace.
Thanks so much, Joseph. The warmth of the audience made us very glad we made the drive to Roseville.
Fran
Since my goal in playing slack key is to spread the enjoyment by introducing more people to the genre, you've given me a particular compliment, and I really appreciate it. With the internet has come a pretty good spectrum of information about slack key to help in your exploration.
Fran
I have discovered this beautiful Hawaiian music. Love and admiration from South Africa🎼💯
Thanks for joining us and thanks for your comment.
Fran
What a wonderful biography of a slack key master. He is one if the nicest persons around. I akways remember he says "Jus Press." We shall Brudda. Akua's Blessings. Aloha Pumehana. 🎶🎵🌴🌞
I just came for a good dose of Ledward and Fran.
I just saw the 4K drone footage of the day after at Lahaina.
I really need some sweet Hawaiian chords.
I'm praying for those people.
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. I must say I agree with you, I feel fortunate to have found slack key, it brings so much joy.
Fran
Great slack key tune. Just saw both Led and Fran at the Strum Shop in Roseville. The joy and laughter on stage came through in all your songs last night. There was enough of us native born people of all nationalities to make the hana hou Hawaii Aloha a chicken skin moment for me. Mahalo nui to you both
I first heard of slack key in Michener's novel, checked on it from time to time in the pre-internet days, never found anything, eventually forgot about it. Ran across it tonight looking up Hawai'ian Pidgin terminology, thought, "They've got everything on RUclips," and this was the first clip I looked at. What a beautiful piece of music! As a folky in the '60s-'70s I experimented with open tuning, but nothing like this. Wanna try again! Thanks much!
Fran, you both play very well together and look like you are enjoying it as much as we are watching and listening to you. Thank you for all the music and videos.
From far away South Africa - I say thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us and please we enjoy every second to listen and watch you guys perform. This is simply the most relaxing !!

Absolutely wonderful! What a treat. And as always Fran, thanks for posting the tech specs of how you recorded this.
this just makes me feel so happy :)
not to mention the breathtaking view of the mountain.
The Ko`olau that surrounds the windward side of O`ahu is indeed breathtaking, different every day but magnificent in every pose.
Thanks for taking time to comment.
Fran
Great job Fran!! Beautiful video.
Beautiful!
Thanks for visiting and commenting. I hope you'll sample a few more of the videos on the channel. I've even done a clip of the same song in the same location 9 years later ruclips.net/video/7erAAPNqIeg/видео.html It's kind of fun to compare the two.
Fran

Thanks for posting this and the background story. I've listened to Ledward for a few years now but I did know he was from Kalapana area. We got to spend some time on the coast near there exploring in the rental jeep in January and play some music in Puna/Pahoa area.
I bet Led & Sharon have some mighty fortunate and happy neighbors!
Thanks -nice calming moment. I needed that
Thanks Peter, and thanks for visiting.

Fran

Thanks, Anton. I hope you enjoy some of the other clips as well.
Fran
+Fran Guidry I don't know of any more BEAUTIFUL sounds, love it!!
Led and Ned Kaapana are related to my Grand Mother Julia Kahana on my side of the O'hana.
It's good to feel the music over here in Las Vegas and missing the Aina and the Aloha's...Mahalo nui loa bradduh.
authentic...now i'm craving a lilikoi popcicle...so nice duet
I gotta say, it can't get any more backyard than this clip. I was still learning and experimenting with the cameras and recorders, but Led puts out so much great sound that it all came together.
Fran
Not sure what say here..such beauty. Thank you🙏
Thanks, Mike, I really appreciate your visit and comment.
Fran
tylko słuchać-dziękuję.

Thanks for visiting the channel. This is one of our earliest efforts and it has been a lot of fun playing with Ledward and shooting these videos. I hope you enjoy them.
Fran
Oh Fran, this is wonderful. Not only is the music exceptional, but your video is stunning! Anf hey, who da guy you hang around and jam with? You pick up just anybody, yeah?
Gosh darn, slack key hardly gets better than this! Mahalo for letting us experience this.
Me ke aloha,
Wanda
Sweet music! Mahalo.
I'm glad you found this clip - I think we've come a fair distance in video and audio quality since then, but the heart of the music comes through and the Ko`olau in the mist is a sight to remember.
Last time I was in Hawai`i we shot a new version of that song in the same location and again caught some nice Ko`olau views.
Fran
@@franguidry Those mountains and the air does seem to have magical qualities that help creativity. Can't wait to travel to the Islands but don't know when.
Thanks for all the beauty. Very grateful.
Thanks for stopping by, Michael. Glad you enjoyed the clip.
Fran
I've just gotten to know him through Ukulele Magazine. Amazing!
Fortunately there are lots of videos of Led doing his amazing thing. Enjoy!
Fran
mr.guidry you are a very fine performer, bravo
Thank you, I think of myself as very lucky to have found this wonderful style of music and this amazing artist to play alongside. And to have heard from so many kind visitors like yourself. Thanks for visiting and commenting.
Fran

Thank you, Kyle, Ledward is quite an inspiration.
Fran
so appreciate the mana'o behind the mele and video. hana Maika'i! Aloha
Thanks for your kind words. As you can imagine, it's a great thrill to play this music with Ledward, I feel very fortunate. And the sight of the Ko`olau marching across the horizon is one of my favorite views in all the world.
Are you on O`ahu by any chance? Ledward plays every week he's in town out in Hawai`i Kai at the Kona Brewing Company restaurant.
Fran
Sorry, I usually have that info in the video description. This song is in G, we're both using taropatch (open G) tuning spelled D G D G B D from low to high.
Fran
Music to me ears....great playing guys.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Fran
Eh, Andy, how nice of you to stop by and comment. We're back in Kaleponi feeling chilly and reminiscing about our friends, and as always lamenting all the connections we missed. And of course already planning the next visit.
Fran
Beautimus e maximus!
Tres cool, thanks for the reply. I did buy a disk of his music and a DVD.
I've bookmarked his website, i'll be watching his concert schedul, you betcha!
hawaian fado . wonderfull!
Nicely done. Real easy-on-the ears.
Larry Garrett Thanks, Larry. I have a playlist now of all the tunes I've captured with the two of us, hope you find something to enjoy there.
Fran
You guys sure are great together. Thanks, Ronn
You're very kind, thanks for visiting and commenting.
Fran
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I lived in Honolulu as a young child and even though I am Haole this musical spirit will be with me always
Thanks for taking time to comment. The music does seem to match the landscape, doesn't it? Led has created an incredible musical legacy at that little house in Kane`ohe!
Fran
Very very sweet music. I never had the opportunity to visit hawaii, but I hope to make it soon. Thank you a lot for this lovely piece =)
sexvidio
Beautiful.
Thanks for visiting.
Fran
Old Koloa Your profile picture is awesome.
Ahhh. I was lucky enough to stay in Kaneohe for about a year and I miss waking up to the Koʻolaus every morning. Also miss seeing Ledward down at Kona brewing co. on the weekends, pretty much the best free show you could hope for. Beautiful and full of spirit. Much love for brother Led!
+Eric Le Carde Oh, those mountains. The Ko`olau really have a hold on me.
Fran
By the way, Eric, if you get back to Kane`ohe, Ledward now plays every Saturday evening at Honey's at the Ko`olau Golf Course, no more at Kona Brewing. Still free, but now people come to enjoy the show, not just to get drunk and make noise. It's a Windward Side pa`ina every week.
I have some clips that I shot at Honey's, check `em out if you get a chance.
Fran
Love u, mama! Say hi to Don!
Thank you
Glad you stopped by, Rick.
Fran
Sweeeeet! Sooo soothing. And that scenery. Thanks for this.
The scenery is even more amazing when you realize it was shot in Led's backyard (grin).
Fran
Fran Guidry damn! I want that house. What island?
@@friendlybanjoatheist5464 Led's on O`ahu, the town is Kane`ohe. Not a mansion by any means but the windward side is just a gorgeous location with great views in every direction. We're looking up at the Ko`olau mountain range that separates Honolulu and such from the windward side.
Fran
Very very decent job on the video, great audio.
I remember that Black sand beach and the queen's bath from my time on the Big Island back in the 70's. Missed the jam sessions or I might have taken up slack key sooner. But never to early.
If you get down to Kalapana today you'll find the Awa Bar and a jam session nearly every night! But no black sand beach or Queen's bath.
Fran
What I always love best about Hawaiian music...sitting in the backyard
In Hawaiia, it's known as kanikapila(Kah-nee-kah-pee-la), dunno literal translation but it's basically impromptu jam session, ad lobbing all the way but sticking to basic outline. Started w/backyard home parties.
@@harrymiram6621 Mahalo Harry! Aloha to you!
Braddah Led is Da Bess!!
Audio quality does make a hit. Exellent
Jon, thanks for visiting and taking a moment to comment. And thanks for commenting on the quality of the recording, I hope you'll check some of my more recent videos. I think I've had even better luck lately, this one for instance is a favorite of mine: ruclips.net/video/HJN9MazwGwM/видео.html
