My name is Mike Jones, and I'm a barista at Third Rail Coffee right by Washington Square Park in New York City. I'm going to teach you some basic coffee-making skills.
Alright, I'm going to talk to you about latte art. Latte art is kind of the exciting part of making espresso drink. It's what gets a lot of people really pumped about making coffee. It's not necessarily a representation of a quality beverage, but it definitely shows that the person who made it cared-it's the mark of a professional, similar to plating with food. Now, the first thing you need is a good shot of espresso. You need the milk steamed properly with good micro foam, and then you have to pour, keeping a few things in mind. This is velocity, so basically how fast you're pouring. And then where the milk is going in the cup, and where it's flowing outwards. It's kind of something you have to feel out and you really have to practice it many many times to get down. So we're going to start off by doing the heart. This is sort of the basic latte art design and then the other one would be a rosetta which is a fern, and then a tulip. So heart, rosetta, tulip are the three basic designs you can do with latte art. So I'm going to start off making the heart, pulling a shot, steaming the milk and then pouring. Alright, so when you're starting to pour latte art, the first thing you want to do is pour from a greater distance up, or from a greater height so that way the milk is actually going to go underneath the espresso and then as you get closer and start pouring faster, the foam rises to the top and this is when you start controlling it. So to make the heart, you're basically just going to be pouring into the center until you see it's about three-quarters full. So I'm pouring into the center there. Then as I get closer, the foam will rise to the top and you just kind of shake it, and then you lift it up at the end to suck it in and cut through. So again, pouring to the center, getting close when it's three-quarters full, pulling up to suck in and then cutting through. That's a heart. - Хобби

a lot of people don't realize how much work goes into a cup of coffee until they have to or try to make one themselfs. I'm practice this when i get to work.
So did I
Seriously man, if it takes you more than a couple of minutes you're doing something wrong. Sure you'll get better as you practice more.
@@TheGunmanChannel latte art and making quality coffee takes longer than "a few minutes" to figure out. Now most people have their idea of what is good coffee so it's partially a relative term.
But when you are talking professional barista quality coffee that is a skill take takes time to master and understand. Just like a professional wine or beer maker. It's not something that just happens overnight although the process can be learned rather quickly.
I'm pretty sure your boss would prefer it if you, you know, _work_ when you get to work. ;)
I’ve been practicing at my workplace for a while! I just only got the technique and even then I still can’t make good looking designs (I’m getting better though) The milk has to be a very specific level of foamy and everything has to be a specific type of way for it to work. It’s super tricky but I find it super fun.
I need to learn this shit by tomorrow morning. I've got a job interview for a barista and I've never made coffee before. Fuck.
mmmBurekNJAMNJAM did u get job? or should i ask, did u work out how to do the heart?
mmmBurekNJAMNJAM I am in this exact position
+Kieran Dalton I did the same thing when I wanted my first coffee job. I've been working at a coffee shop for a year now and I'm just starting to understand how latte art works.
JAKE L Nah, dude actually never called back so now I'm learning to program whilst drinking a cup of plain black.
Shelbi Snell The struggle is real, I remember having to throw away some cups because according to my manager I couldn't serve the penis shaped failed latte art hearts.
He makes it look so easy. The time I did a heart in a cup of coffee at work was by accident 😂
Oooh
I have learnt the heart now

By far the best tutorial ive watched. It's nice to see someone actually explain the physics behind it and give a literal step by step process to it.
I'm a barista of mid-level ability and these videos have gone a long way to strengthening my fundamentals while very clearly explaining some of the more advanced techniques. These are things that surprisingly few coffee houses are able to train employees on, and it falls on the barista to train themselves on latte art and sometimes even basic foaming. I would be a much less skilled barista without these fantastic tutorials.
What? This video on how to make a heart had 20 seconds max of relevant info. That relevant info was terrible. Pour in middle, shake a little then pull out to “suck” and pull through.
Brilliant…….
This is a minor point but as I've struggled to do this for some time now and tonight had a breakthrough in understanding I thought I should mention this: the milk isn't "rising to the top." What happens is as you lower pitcher of milk close to coffee surface the milk foam stays on the top as gravity of a higher fall isn't sending it down. Important distinction. In a way you are "placing" the foam on the top gently to make the design.
barista is not just a job, a special passion and determination
COFFEE ARTIST It's the same for me. I don't "have" to go to work in the morning... I am actually looking forward to making coffees for people and brightening their day! It's a great profession!

Thank you Mike for sharing your experience. I have been watching other videos for months and trying to make a simple coffee art. You are the only person who actually talked about velocity and how to do it. It worked. I got it. You are the master
I really liked how not pretentious he was, I felt like he was a really friendly guy who would be a great person to get trained by
To all the batistas we want you to know how much we appreciate your professionalism with coffee making.
Great video, many thanks!
Thank you howcast so much. My dad owns a bakery and my big brother thought that he could make better cappuccino art then me. The I found this video and the next day my was going t judge who made the heart better and I won. THANK YOU HOWCAST!

thank you for sharing- I love latte art- gets me every time- for me is about the little things in life.
How does one perfectly steam milk in 9 SECONDS???
easy
1: get milk
2. piss in it
GJ warm milk
4 ounce of milk can be steamed with a 10 liter boiler and a 4 hole steam wand in 9 seconds
try steaming milk with Synesso. you'll finish in 5 sec.
Marcell Heim if it is a good coffee machine and the milk is not that cold then it is normal 🤷🏼♂️
Damn, that's what I was thinking too, mate.
I am amazed to see how much passion he have for his work 💜
I'm a barista at Starbucks and I feel like it's my milk steaming that's wrong. After watching this I realize it's also how I pour. Thanks for this, I'll keep practicing

Im an intern at a 5 star hotel as a barista for 3 months now. This video saved my life.
i loved he just put the coffee into the portafilter from the grinder and didnt mess about for about 5 mins like most of the other latte art barista videos.
Loved this. I am always amazed at the time people take to help others. Thank you so much.

In all its simplicity, the explanation of the pour itself is very effective. Good job!

How can u make it so easy 😭. I tried over and over but cant make it 😑
just go to starbucks
You need to circulate it once.
+Fieeza Maskom That is what pros do they make things looks easy. You may have tried over and over but he's probably done it 100x more still. Its all about practice and consistency.
imthegal 21 I'm going to work at Starbucks and I can't make it either
There're actually about fifty things to concern to make a good latte art, not less.
This is great and I do this when I make cappuccinos and flat whites etc but where I am (the north of England) a latte is served in a tall glass with a handle, and it's milk poured in first with about a cm/2 cm of microfoam on top then you pour in the shot so it floats, but is this a latte in America? Someone please explain, it's just this looks like a flat white to me
Eleanor Black A latte is typically a shot with steamed milk poured on top, a cappucino is the same, just with more foam. Some places seem to pour it into a tall glass, it's just a different way of doing the same thing. A flat white is similar but the milk is supposed to be less foamy and the coffee has less milk in it.
I work at Starbucks and what is shown in this video is a flat white (at least in Starbucks terms). What you described with the shots being poured last is a macchiato (or again, at least that's what it is to us).
Update! As a change in steaming routines, Starbucks has switched to a 1-3 second aeration, into auto-steam, as opposed to the old method of 3-5 seconds. And yes, like a flat white lol
Eleanor Black kinda reminds me of an un noisette
Latte and cappuccino are different in every country. We all have a different version of these coffee ^.^ if you go in italy a latte is completly different from our triditionnal latte !
Your video is still being watched. Definitely about to watch some of your other videos. I think my foam is not dense enough.. Thank you 🙏🏾 so much for sharing.
It took my 10 years to know , how to make heart ❤️ on top of a coffee. Queries resolved today . Thank you. I will start now a coffee Cafe.

Gianmarco Marrese sorry for the acronyms... also nespresso sells their cups
You can find these specific cups at intelligentsia coffee.com. Cheers
You made it look so easy!!!
Man, that was just perfect....very impressive.
Do you get much of a head of froth at the top? I have to make these into glass mugs and people get extremely irritable if there's more than about 1cm of froth on top. Am pretty new to Barista work so sorry if this sounds ignorant :/
You shouldn't get a head at all really. The microfoam should be equal throughout.
Ok cheers, will keep practicing :)
On Lattes there should be only about 1cm of the 'head, and this is what distinguishes it from a flat white.
Awesome thank you :D

There's something about lattè art that gets me really excited
it's so fucking hard to steam milk and keep it warm
Nice art, but the espresso shot came out badly, so slow! Surely burnt?
Seemed to pull a bit slow, maybe around 25 seconds but that isn't bad. 22 seconds would be a perfect shot, imo he probably pressed too hard and didnt tap. However, the camera doesnt really provide a close up.
LOL, I guess you two are the experts eh?
the espresso came out bad.
The expresso seemed okay to me...
what would be the reason for the espresso shot pulling so slowly?
