He’s likely also depressed because he lives in a soulless suburb full of atomized, rootless people he has no commonality with, who go from bedroom, to living room, to car, then work, then back, and for a thrill, might go to the gym or yell at a skateboard…

American suburbs, particularly if one eschews a vehicle, are some of the most depressing and isolating environments. No amount of variety in landscaped shrubbery and Home Depot color palettes can dispel that. Depression is not as big an issue in the other countries I spend time in (Italy and Mexico) as the conviviality of urban centers tends to elicit more of a sense of neighborliness than an HOA or drywall-clad isolation box development in the states ever will.

Back when I did hard cardio, I felt tired from it a lot, so I stopped doing it. I only lift weights now and go on easy hikes and bike rides for fun.

I used to skate as a kid, and landing some trick that I was attempting to learn at that time did give me a little childish sense of achievement and joy. It was meaningless in the bigger scheme of things sure, but meant something to me and my friends at the time. The same can be said for reading books, and I guess most hobbies or sports, and for me, painting, which is something I spend a lot of time doing and have done since I was a kid. Of course it has no natural meaning, and if you strip away all the layers of “reasons” why most of us do most of the things we do, I can see how the majority of activities could be seen as completely pointless and meaningless, but @goatis, do you not feel there’s any place in life at all for “meaningless” pastimes that serve only as pursuits of some kind of fun, simply because we enjoy it? It can also be a means of connecting and bonding with others, I know skating was for me. And there are plenty of animals that play for fun in the wild, as I imagine humans probably also have done since we were living naturally along side them. If you look at the world that way I guess looking for “meaning” becomes completely irrelevant anyway and just another man made concept that doesn’t exist. Is there another species on the planet that thinks about or looks for meaning in any part of their lives and activities? Probably not. Then it becomes just about function..does something promote or hinder survival and reproduction, because I guess those are the only natural “meaningful” pursuits in our lives, everything else is man made. It’s like you see anything outside of what is meaningful in nature as meaningless and therefore pointless, but is it not natural for humans to ascribe meaning to a thing that is not meaningful to any other species or in nature? There are a lot of characteristics and behaviors of course that connect mankind and the animal kingdom, but also a much smaller number of characteristics that are unique to some species, but not necessarily unnatural because of that. It’s mankind’s ability to apply our minds to ideas and goals outside of what is necessary for survival that has lead, indirectly, to the point where we can even bring up this conversation to consider. I’m just interested if you see anything and everything that is unnatural in this way to be not just meaningless, but also pointless and in some way destructive to us?

Especially when you consider the fact that for most of these guys that kind of body would be unattainable without the industrial society supporting their nutritional needs. (as well as allowing them to have tons of free time to do meaningless physical activity such as lifting the same weight over and over).
As a result they become even more dependent on the industrial society. I mean just imagine civilization collapsed tomorrow, or the grid went down, how would they get their supply of protein powder/creatine/supplements/etc? How would they find thousands of calories per day to fuel their bulking? Without being able to market and profit off of their ''fitness'' brands online, they also would lose access to their source of income. Dependent asf.
