I swear an 6-8" smallie fights harder then some trout and even largies in my experience but more experience with smallies seems the 6-8" seem to fight harder then the larger ones too I caught a foot long smallie put up less fight then the smaller ones! But darn they are fun!
A go to I use flies with trophy bass by procure and a spit shot not too tight on the line. Pin split shot so u can slide it up and down the line. Slide split shot 8 inches, you'll catch smallies. It's good to keep drag loose so they don't feel resistance. Once they hit tight drag no more than 3 times. If you have heavier line, say 10 plus lb line 4 times max. 😊 sadly, I lost a 4lb smallie. I put spit shot too tight. Hard lesson to learn. 😢
Got a river where i live not much in town but just out of town is a spot with three sets of rapids and three honey holes just full of baby bass and 6-10inchers and some big ones too caught a one footer on a mepps spinner with a single hook and false egg with a grub trimmed and slipped onto the single hook idk the patter but yellow and siover with three black painted eyes pattern. Making some custom spinners with rubber baits now to try out after that one. And boy do they fight!
Nice fish. That is a spectacular looking spot. I fish the Great Miami, Stillwater, and Auglaize rivers primarily. If you ever want to fish up this way hit me up.
Went creek fishing in Missouri and I cant tell what bass I'm catching it has the pattern and colo of a large mouth but they had a smallmouth and red eyes
Man im not trying to tell you how to fish but seems like your a little fast and spooky to me (making lots of noise in the water while fishing close to your person), I fish bass on a river so I understand their temperament changes a little but try slowing it down a tad, dont set like your setting for a largemouth let him take it, once you feel him turn around with it or take off with it than set, seen you miss like 3 fish from an aggressive set where if you would have played them a bit slower youd of got them. Remember that they are small mouth. One other thing i noticed is that you speed reel while breaking drag, with experience you learn to be a bit more patient with it and let it fight while keeping tension, than when he runs out of gas bring him in, they always jump so keep that tension just dont need to constantly reel to do so. Awsome spot tho buddy wish i had clear creaks like that where i live to see them strike. I caught a few 4lbers + one 5lber PB this week on the river in fast moving water. 4lbs turns into 8 real quick
@@5050fishing Yeah buddy no worries like I said, not tryna tell you what to do, just what I would do in your situation I guess. But ey. You know that spot better 100% regardless what I say. Wasn't tryna come off as someone tryna pick on you for how your fishing, just thought that walking in the water kinda spooks em off. And that in the 1 hour you had alot of bites but not alot of fish brought in. Maybe trying to slow it down would up that success rate but like I said not my spot. If you like to reel for nothing also than no worries i just choose to slow it down reel when its needed. I always accept positive criticism. My mistake if it came off as negative criticism. All that counts man is you had a blast wich looks like mission accomplished. Keep on fishing ill keep on watchin
@@xbeez3543I agree with ya. Ive seen plenty of people that have fished for over 50 years and are clueless. Hes definitely reeling for nothing as drag is being pulled. It actually causes mono to get twisted when you reel against ripping drag. Everyone fishes the way they like at the end of the day though. Right or wrong
I do s lot of wsding snd fliating small shslliw streams for smallmouth. Just my opinion but seems your drag is way too loose. Not trolling jyst noticed you were having a difficult time with hookset more keeping them hookef. But great video, and like i said not trolling just sharing am opinion. I have subscribed to your channel.
You wouldn’t have been getting nearly as many “short strikes” if your drag was slightly tighter, the fish at 3:43 definitely was too small to be taking any drag at all if your targeting big fish.
I appreciate that you have the confidence in only taking one pole. I take at least 4 with me at all times, today, I have 9 packed for river

Any recommendations for creek fishing in march? Still in the 60s in my area
Wait for the water temp to warm up a bit more, I’d say early to mid April is the time to start hitting the creek
@codyblankenship7127 I agree the water just started warming up im my area and finally hooked into some creek smallies

The reason why the bass aren’t getting hooked very well is because your drag is set so loose that your hook sets don’t do hook them
