Apologies for some of the audio cracking. Tested out a new mic on this trip and I’m still getting it figured out. It’ll be dialed in future videos. Anyways, hope y’all enjoy ✌🏻
Fisheries biologist checking in here confirming your carp was a quillback. Notoriously hard to get to eat. No doubt smacked it in the face. Fun battle either way!
Cool video. Hard to watch your videos and not fever to go at least throw a flu line let alone fish. Great truly happy energy you dudes give off when fishing. Reminds me it is more about getting out with friends and family and creating your own adventures. I know a lot of work goes into editing so thank you.
The “carp” at 10:07 is a quill back carp. We stalk them like bone fish on sand flats, Lower Wisconsin River. They form a chain along the banks during the spawn. 2-10 fish thick shoulder to shoulder for 100’s of yards. Cool fish.
Could watch fly fishing for smallies all day long - rather be doing it, but in lieu of that, I'll live vicariously through y'all until I can get on the water. LOL. Another excellent video.
Have you ever thought about doing a video or podcast with Allegheny Natives? Y’all have similar story telling, experiential videos and y’all are both super chill. I think it would be a great collaboration!
along with Catch & Release ...please make a video on catch & eat....with detailed Video on Grilling and Eating ! That would be fun....Great Video & Scenery !
Some of my favorite places to hook is in the east coast mountains. I took a set-up with me when I was doing some section hiking along the Appalachian Trail and found some incredible spots.
I'm a kayak guy in the piedmont of nc just started on the fly after years of bass fishing just saying this is frickin alwsom wish I would have started this years ago
Gotta give credit to CJ. Fishing almost exclusively streamers takes patients. Patients that seldom gets rewarded. But god damn when you finally hook up it's always something special!
Love yuor vids, I live between the Holsten and the Broad here in the Strawberry Plains area. Fly fishinfg is great but the real insanity is wacthing a French Broad smallie hit a top water so hard it knockes the plug twenty feet while coming 5 feet out of the water it's self. My best was 23". Keep it up.
I wish we had good smallmouth rivers in my area. For some reason most of the rivers around me only hold tiny smallies. I would take big smallies over trout any day.
Nice video scottie. Love watching y'alls trips especially the ones in our region. I've been out several times this season and have done well. Looking forward to more times out and watching your videos. 😀👍.
Yo! Just throwing this out there but if you’re ever in Idaho come to Boise and my buddy and I would be so down to take you to the Southfork and Owyhees. Some super fun fly fishing!
Awesome video man, live the smallmouth on the fly stuff I could watch it forever. Keep me coming 🙌🏻 if you’re ever in NC near Asheville I’ve got some amazing smallmouth spots
I would have reconsidered floating the blown-out water... My understanding is that high muddy water pushes fish to the banks where they don't have to work as hard to hold in feeding positions... In that case, you know exactly where they'll be...
just discovered your channel, love it. am I correct in thinking you're filming with an A7sii? autofocus? what lenses do you use? cheers from Squamish, British Columbia
I’m in western nc and want to catch smallmouth! Do you guys do any guiding? I would pay... been a subscriber to wild fly since your app state days. Would be honored to fish with you and/or CJ sometime!
That "carp" you caught about 1/2 way into your video, I think, may have been a North American black buffalo fish, or perhaps another type of buffalo fish. I caught one once in the Hennepin canal in Illinois. It took a surface Rapala plug with a popper mouth. They look like carp, but unlike carp they are indigenous to North America. They lack the ubiquitous barbells around the mouth of carp. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_buffalo
I have a question for you, I'm in Michigan, similar water, what are some of your favorite Flies And colors for Smallies? I have difficulty getting them on my Fly rod....but really do well on my spinning gear. If anyone has some suggestions I would appreciate it. I only get them on Wooly buggers here, I would think my bigger streamers would work, but they haven't been.
I use anything that represents a crawfish or sculpin...I've caught them on Whitlock's near nuff sculpin and near nuff crawfish but really any fly that will imitate those.
Wow! Nice fishing skills my friend! I Really enjoyed watching. Can't wait for my first fishing this year...BTW, you are Welcome to my channel about bushcraft and survival in Russia! Regards, Yuriy!
Not freaking because of the size of fish, but new species. That’s where you reach true fisherman. As rare as it may seem to catch a fish. You mainly catch the same fish with a certain setup. But every now and then you get a wtf. This is fishing. Not knowing but maybe knowing. Trying one thing and maybe another. Tell me I’m wrong.
Find it rather interesting that you title this flick "Big River....". That water is considered a creek in my neck of North Idaho waters. Cool flick otherwise.
Apologies for some of the audio cracking. Tested out a new mic on this trip and I’m still getting it figured out. It’ll be dialed in future videos. Anyways, hope y’all enjoy ✌🏻
The level of optimism in the size of CJ's net is what this world needs more of.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it lol
To be fair the Filson pack is not the best bet holder.
Fisheries biologist checking in here confirming your carp was a quillback. Notoriously hard to get to eat. No doubt smacked it in the face. Fun battle either way!
Thanks for confirming, Nate! That dude about took the rod from my hand. Bad ass fight for sure.
But it is a Quillback Carpsucker, so it wants you to think it’s a carp lol
Seldom have I ever clicked so fast on a video. Appalachian + Smallmouth = You have my attention.
Great edits and pace of the video. I can’t wait to get to fish the Jackson

Great scenery, especially that where the smallmouth were caught. A dream come true.
Never had a wildfly video disappoint. Love it guys! Got me hooked on fly fishing and now I can’t stop ✌️keep it up!
Let’s go dude! The obsession is real, there’s no going back 😂
@@WildFlyProductions Yea y'all should really put a warning label on this stuff. looking forward to seeing what's next.
Always love your videos. Some how you always make me feel like I’m there with you. Wish I was.
AWSOME!!!! Reminds me of the flambeau river in Wisconsin! Great job!
You are becoming the premier flyfishing videographer! Great to see a collab with CJ again.
Wow man talk about some beautiful places... especially the first one. Awesome video as always, CJ is a wealth of knowledge.
Thanks brother! Just another reminder of how special Appalachia is.

I was wondering. I knew it wasn't a Common Carp. Thanks for that info.
Awesome video! Fairly certain that carp was a quillback tho! Pretty similar but a bit more rare, at least where I’m from.
Pointy dorsal fin shape and the lack of barbels on the chin.
Whenever I watch a Wild Fly video, I start by liking it and then I watch it. I’m really liking all the new content, man. Keep it up!
Thanks so much brother!
@@WildFlyProductions No problem! Do you guys have a Patreon yet? I'd be happy to help out!

There's nothing like a big ole smallie taking the rod from your hand. Thanks for tuning in, man!
3:00 KILLER EDIT, man scotty you're gettin GOOD 🔥

Good stuff ya'll
Some of my favorite places to hook is in the east coast mountains. I took a set-up with me when I was doing some section hiking along the Appalachian Trail and found some incredible spots.
You need to come fish the susquehanna or Junianata to see world class Smallmouth Bass fishing.

Come up to Maine! Plenty of native Brookies up here
Last week I was fishing up near Cornwall ct next to the AT, caught two smallies one 3 lbs and the other 3.5

Id love to find some up your way soon. Live in SC around clemson and got plenty of trout holes but not many smallie streams around here
I'm there around May 20th, coming from Indy.
I hope to small stream wade. Got any advice please ?

I would have reconsidered floating the blown-out water... My understanding is that high muddy water pushes fish to the banks where they don't have to work as hard to hold in feeding positions... In that case, you know exactly where they'll be...
Pretty cool catch man, that’s either a quillback sucker or a small Buffalo sucker. Not related to carp.
I would love to know where y’all are fishing. I live in the mountains of North Carolina and would love to fish these spots.
You should try for bass on the Buffalo National River.
Really cool video 👏🏼👏🏼
Awesome
"none of this is posted", probably my favorite thing to say when scouting. Needs to happen more often..

Yesss
Who are the 9 idiots who disliked it.. great content. Keep it up boys.
What kind of rod and line setup would be good for smallmouth? And some good starter flies
That fish is in the carp family it's called a quillback and are quite rare especially on a fly rod.
Pretty sure it’s actually a smallmouth buffalo
@@scottkey6707 they are very similar looking but the buffalo have all black eyes and a more rounded dorsal fin
Bad ass video.
Great video could u show us the flies ur using
Yo I just got some of your merch and I’m so excited to wear
Let’s go dude! Thanks so much👊🏻
The carp was actually a buffalo. Looks quite like carp but has nothing to do with them.
Pretty sure it was a quillback carp sucker.
I've made the same mistake with a redhorse. Now I call everything a sucker.
Definitely a quillback.
Subscribed. Excellent video

plenty in the French Broad...............
Niiice!!!
Is this a feeder creek to the New River? Looks familiar.
looks like a smallmouth buffalo actually
Where’s short bus season 2? What the hell guyz. Let’s see more of the bus!!!

North Carolina 😀
Nets for 6” trout? 😂
I'm not trying to blow up your spot, but what state/region in the Appalachias? I'm in Northeast Georgia and I wanna get into some smallmouth.
Cool.
Anyone know what brand backpack CJ was using?
