How about a RJ Martin ?

I have only owned a Q-36 and several fixed blades as well so not enough first hand experience for me to comfortably have an opinion.

Very few knives will ever rival an RJ Martin, which is why I still call him the Flipper King. I’ve owned 3 Q36s and a Modulator and handled at least a dozen of his other knives and his detent is such a rare exception in the custom flipper world. But to be fair, a handmade knife costing $3k+ should damn well be better than my $300 (at retail) production knife lol.

@JimSkeltonKnives Honesty I wasn't that impressed with my Q-36 it was definitely a very solid knife but at the time I definitely thought the Arius was better, I obviously cannot comment on the other one you mentioned though but my 36 was great for sure, but not exceptional like the Caladan V2 is, but maybe that one had problems or he has just gotten better since that was an older piece at the time.

So I bought 2 of these. The action is not even close to as good as yours. There is audible grit in both of mine. That being said the build quailty and finish is awesome. But my action on both of mine did not live up to your hype/sample.
Such is the the game I guess.
**Edit** after cleaning the knife, the action improved a ton. It’s like butter now. For the price these are available knives.

Okay that is fucked and I'm going to pin your comment so other people are aware of your experience.
I'm actually carrying mine right now and it's absolutely fantastic so that is really unfortunate to hear.

@@RedwolfEDCyea bro it’s super unfortunate. I was SO stoked to get these an the action feels like like there is junk from the build process in it.
THAT being said I am gonna take one apart a clean it out myself, and send one back an I will report back.

Ok. I love Jim, he's given me some great advice and I own examples of his knives. But to claim to "dethrone" Arius? That's WAY bold, and I'll say "Nope".
Flipper action alone? Sure they're comparable.
But for the Caladan V2, you can't thumbroll or thumb flick it, you can't reverse flick it. Flipper only, one trick pony.
Dethrone Arius? Yeah sure. I laugh out loud.

      @RedwolfEDC  28 дней назад +1

I love how you start with saying that it's not possible, then double back to its possible and then proceeded to mark it as impossible because it cannot do things that it was never designed to do and you managed all of these mental gymnastic routines all the while completely forgetting the criteria set out for the video, failure of that magnitude is nothing short of impressive. Kudos 👏

@@RedwolfEDC Points taken, you're right about my missing the main points of your video. It was the sensationalistic "dethrone" comment in the thumbnail that hooked me and I was pretty drunk at the time.... Never did double back though; I just said for flipper action alone they are comparable. But to say "dethrone", no.
This morning your reply gives me a good chuckle and I can take that and shake my head and laugh at myself and say "yeah that was the 7 shots of bourbka over the course of the night making me talk dumb sh!t"..... I call it bourbka, sounds better than vodbin. Frightfully good stuff.
Anyway, have a great day and keep on rocking.

Why is that? The action is absolutely insane and I literally brought out my Arius to make sure.
Fanboys will be mad but anyone that actually handles a caladan will understand.
Also this video is based purely on flipping action alone and in that very specific criteria the caladan v2 wins.

@@RedwolfEDC You're in honeymoon phase bro, we have all been there, it will wear off and you will realize after a few months the cheap china knife does not feel the same as it did when it was new, the Arius will still feel the same. I have owned and worked on thousands of knives and I love chinese knives, but its not even close bro, like nothing coming out of china is remotely going to compete with an Arius. Its going to have an extra 10 thou of play between the pivot barrel and blade that will evenutally manifest into what a lot of people call "bearing lash" but its actually the play between the barrel and blade that china always does because it makes their blades fall easier. The Arius does not have that and still drops perfectly and will continue to work consistently over the life of the knife. The tolerances are not the same, and once the break in period is over you will feel it. Or it could be detent lash, even worse. Either way there is 0 chance the knife will remain feeling perfect for very long.

@knifeknerdreviews4609 So first off I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your opinion and reasoning in such detail, I do however disagree with you on several points.
First and foremost recency biased isn't really something I suffer from, I get between 2 and 5 new knives every week, things cycle in and out like absolutely crazy so the new and shiny thing doesn't mean anything to me, I either like something or I don't and more often then not I don't because I'm a picky and jaded fuck.
Secondly while I definitely understand what you are saying in regards to Chinese manufacturered knives but there are multiple levels to how they produce products from very budget options and higher end and as such higher cost per unit pieces, the Caladan v2 despite the fairly reasonable price point is only reasonable due to the quantity ordered and the relatively small profit margins, most companies would charge 5-6 hundred for this knife but doing so is utilizing frankly unreasonable profit driven goals effectively doubling or often times tripling their money. Dave Warren and Jim Skelton both have chosen to go a different route with this design so you have a higher end piece for a very reasonable price which is obviously very rare.
Last but not least I take my platform very very seriously and I would not make a video like this without considerably weighing the potetional pros and cons and long term consequences. I stand by what I said and I have absolutely no doubt that I will continue to stand by this viewpoint years and years later provided it stays in the collection that long. Because once again this video is purely based upon action which is absolutely fantastic and while I do very much like this knife, once I start actually putting this piece into use the very normal shapped handle but not work comfortably with my very abnormal hands.
Hopefully all of that made sense and once again thank you for your feedback.

@@RedwolfEDC I'm just coming from a place of being a modder and being quite familiar with the shortcomings of this type of manufacturing vs a company like Koenig. If its made by Tuya its probably a phenomenal $200 knife because I am quite familiar with their stuff and Dave. But it's still a $200 knife and thats like comparing a Nissan Altima to a Porsche 🤣 There is a whole lot more love, care and precision involved in making that porsche and it translates in pure performance. You pick up 5 of those knives you're probably going to get a different detent on every one of them, you pick up 5 Arius they will be about 90% consistent. If Jim were honest he would tell ya the same exact thing 🤣.
