I’ve owned a Celica, a Supra, an MR2 Turbo, and currently drive a BRZ. I 100% understand and agree with what you are saying. EXCEPT, the only thing wrong with the driving perfection of my BRZ, is the Subaru engine. Toyota doesn’t need to collaborate on these cars. I don’t want a BMW Supra. I want a Toyota Supra with 100% Toyota genetics. Give me the FT-1 with an LFA variant power plant please.

Not only tht it was INSPIRED by the RB26 engines not bmw my guy and it was not tested in Germany but by motorsports BASED in the UK the ONLY thing German from a mk4 is the design and the gear box like you said...everything else is Toyota and Yamaha

As for as concepts go, Toyota's FT-1 was cool, but when Mazda showed off the RX Vision, there's just no comparison.
If they remake the rx7 they will have to call it rx9.

It will. Because the B58 has been out for a while. Same high maintenance cost and low reliability. BMW is ranked 31 out of 32 top auto makers in reliability. But cost of ownership is low because of their long maintenance periods that sacrifice long term reliability.
Toyota changed parts within the B58 engine to improve long term reliability.
A tech with one has confirmed after 621 miles, it has an oil leak. That certainly sounds like a bmw engine.
Bummer. Hope it was just bad luck. If it's BMW reliability then what's the point? Might as well just buy a BMW.

I'm a long time Supra fanboy, and I'm honestly saddened that it took some low-subscriber channel (no offense and I subbed btw) to make an excellent video like this. No offense again, this video is AMAZING, but I see so many clickbait videos on the Supra's history from much bigger channels and they don't even cover 10% of the Supra's history and it angers the crap out of me, it's like they opened up a wiki page on the Supra and skimmed it VERY fast if that makes any sense. You covered it pretty damn well as well as Toyota's history in general, thanks for the video, loved it! I hope you get more popular man.

Yeah, let's take a reputable sporty car and turn it into a _Crossover_ (I don't know the difference of this and SUV) for people who know diddly dick about automobiles. It's a sacrilege. Well when you look at it closely it has a lot of the spirit of the old eclipses (coupe bodylines, turbo 4 cylinder, AWD) don't forget that some of the geniuses behind the old eclipse could of done some work on the new Cross.
Just my opinion here, but those marketing people should've just called it the Cross and left "Eclipse" out of it. It's a tradition, auto names are make/model. Simple and memorable despite reputation. Except BMW which has random numbers and vowels I'll never understand in this lifetime. >.

yea i mean i like the old supra.. but when i found out about the new... well ofcourse its not like the old... but supra have got an reputation of sport... since 1000hp supra's but iv seen many with less then 300 iv even seen 1 with only 170hp... then now 2017-2018 it cant look the same so the new design is dope... looks fast, cool, and fun

Doubtful.. what would be nice would be an RX9 based on a modified mustang chassis (since ford owns Mazda) the new mustang has a very good chassis, given a little Japanese touch and balancing and a nice 3 rotor turbo engine would put out a beautiful car

I own an original ae86 and i will say that what he said is true. Even with the stock 4AGE the car is a load of fun and anyone will agree once driving it. I think the next Supra may not be the MKIV but it will be fun in its own way.
where did you get yours from? I plan on buying one when I'll make my driving license but in 2019 i doubt there will be any AE86s :/

I got myself a GT86 and I LOVE IT. It's a car that has soul, and it doesn't rely on horsepower to do it.
razer edge, totally agree. I have a BRZ. Perfectly engineered and balanced for the driver’s intimate relationship with the car and the road. It’s a massively underrated car for the incredible performance, feel, feedback, and experience it delivers without hp or tires. I’d go as far to say it’s one of the best sports cars ever made. It rewards a novice and expert driver while being very predictable and forgiving all at the same time while being very drivable to its limits at any speed. There are very few cars that can do this, and none at the price point of the 86/BRZ. It’s a masterpiece - The everlasting smile on our faces tells all anyone needs to know. It’s a very, very fun car to drive, in any road, track, traffic, or weather conditions.
I remember turning in my MR2 after the lease was up and NOT knowing what the hell to buy . I LOOOOVED my MR2. Then I received a brochure for the Supra MK4 and I was ambivalent as hell. THAT whale tale yikes, no flip up lights? (ALL sport cars then HAD flip up lights) but wait! It sat FOUR and had a trunk and did 0-60 in 5.0 seconds?? I HAD to test drive this monster. When I did I could not help but feel I WAS in a jet fighter. ALL was perfect, intuitive, the idle note was some wild animal at rest but just waiting for master to slam that throttle. Except the price. As 1997 ended the car was close to $60K full package no options. On Jan 1 1998 TOYOTA dropped the price to $40,000 (overnight ) I could afford this thing!. And after my first 5 blocks in my leather heaven and killer cockpit some idiot blew a red light and I had to slam the brakes (BAD for a car with 12 miles on it) but the Supra FROZE, no big clanging no shaking no hesitation just a Supra statue. So 30 minutes after signing off on my Supra it saved my life. This happened more than once (I live in NYC. and TRUCKS decide to exit expressways 12 feet from the exit ramp.
Again, slam the brakes turned that perfect steering wheel left. This baby could read my mind. I never understood how that car could have steering play(more than other cars) but could keep a straight line for hours. Now, a quick turn on the steering was instantaneous. I then saw on the rear view mirror traffic coming at me , slammed the gas. the left turn turned into a straight ahead dual turbo Cockatoo rumble and I had left what could have been my last hurrah , one mile behind. My wife just said holding her hands to her face "are we OK". Yeah we are . I was NEVER a great driver but GOD DAMN the Supra was a masterpiece of driving 6th sense and cohesion. I never thought that NYC would have a flood that destroyed 80% of the cars near the beach. And my Supra drowned. and NOONE in the east coast could fix it.

Supra is developt for a Japanese racing class.. And that's why it has a awesome and bulletproof driveline! And the engine and gearbox is what makes it to what it is! Nothing in the same class can eat so much boost on a stock engine and gearbox!

Ive seen only two real ones in the last 10-15 years here in austria. An mk3 and mk4 with 900hp. here those cars are very rare.

This engine maybe has as much hands from the german touched on it as the japanese people... BMW and Toyota are held together by contracts since 2011 to help on a develpment to a mid-size sports car for both of them.
these B58 engines were made by bmw and has been tested since its early days in Toyota... possibly, Toyota had hands on all current b58s design to fit in their iconic car.
people simply instead of searching and see that these engines are made in collab, they simply say "ohh, its a bmw :o"
and if you don't believe that toyota touched on these engines to fit in their car, then why would bmw only release their X40i program to the public that would use b58 in all of their cars 1 month after their FT-1 concept being released.
these engines were worked together between bmw and toyota pretty much before they were even a thing to the costumer.
To not talk about the 822whp world record done on stock bottom end with an older version of these b58 (it being almost 1000hp done on a stock bottom end,)... its a supra and people hate it that its making so much impakt in car mod culture the way it is.
Now reliability, from the search that I've done, engineering wise, these engine are really strong, they can handle much more power than what they have from stock.
The only cars that had engine problems were the first gen of b58 from 2015, some had to have a revisioned/new gen B58 from bmw themselves (warranty).
After 2016, you have some giving problems with fuel pumps, that some people upgraded for a TU pump that come in the supra and problem fixed... the other went to bmw to get it fixed and mostly had wait just to get a new fuel pump and fixed in a day.
From here forward I can see only sensor problems in some of them and chassis problems on 340i... the sensor problems are mostly fixed quickly
from 2018-now there literally a couple of cases on forums and aren't even engine wise problems, some are chassis (that make squishy noises on 340i's, nothing major), on supras, some had headlights problems that were also fixed in a day... so engine wise, seems strong and reliable specially when they're revisioned versions of the b58, they're just great.

Good vid. I agree with a lot of what you said. After my 8th (currently) Supra and a bunch of other cars (2 997tts, 2 GT-Rs, TT viper, 3 z06's, Gallardo, turbo s2ks) the one thing that I have always stayed consistent with is the Supra. I can still take mine out w/the 66mm turbo and push it as hard as I want in a twisty road and know what the breaking point is. I have consistent output, consistent noises, and the chassis is rock solid even after 21 years.
Me too, I also agree 100% and am picking up what you’re putting down. After my 12th Lamborghini diablo, 100 dodge vipers, 6 million corvette ZO6’s and other cars, I have to agree that the Toyota Supra, is indeed, a mediocre car.
just like how they revived the AE86's legacy through the GT86, im sure they will not disappoint us with the FT-1

I love the way you describe the 86/BRZ. It's totally true - no Subaru feels like it. It has a Subaru engine but Subarus all understeer and that thing definitely prefers to oversteer

or more, its not cheap and not fun to work on a brz engine

I would hope that it's a faster car, as is, and not a car that needs a bunch of work to make competitive.
Although working on cars can be fun, if you put $5k or $10k into a car, you aren't going to get much back out of it when you are ready for something else, or if it gets totaled by a doofus in a VW Tiguan.

Great video a lot of detail.
I feel like the supra was great because it has something for everyone. As car enthusiasts we all get something different and enjoy different things about our cars. Personally, i love the feeling of a car settling back on the rear wheels and the front end lifting as it just comes alive. Sure whipping around corners is fun, but I don't get that same magical feel driving a miata as I do my c5. Raw, fuck you style power is a big part of whether or not I personally enjoy a car. The mkiv is such a legend because it's such a blank canvas. Massive horsepower drag build? Check. Corner carving road course monster? Check. Peppy daily? Check. I just don't think the new supra is going to be able to pull that off. It'll drive well, but I feel it's going to be more of a completed car, rather than the canvas the old supra was.
The empty canvas to personalise a car was a thing of the 90s and early 2000s expecialy jdm., more and more cars will be a one a done product that is hard to modify. People want useless shit inside and all extra comfort and other things that doesnt matter to driving. The GT86 is one of the first anwsers from Akio Toyota for the enthausiasts: A sporty lightweight rwd chassis to enjoy from start and modify further on. lets not forget when the mk4 supra was first released in the 90's nobody really had "street" builds with 1000+ hp. that came later down the road thanks to innovation in tuning and the huge growth of the aftermarket community. i dont think we should consider the new supra a failure if it doesnt have a bunch of insane builds right after it comes out. we got to wait for all the factory warranties to expire, then people will REALLY be free to go crazy

I felt a real connection the first time I sat in my 1990 supra non turbo model. I tore it down several times wanting to know more about the car I was driving and what was powering it. I got the same feeling x100 when I drove in my 2006 Evo 9 SE the first time.

It'll happen, just not with a rotary. Mazda filed a patent for a twin turbo, electrically supercharged engine earlier this month.
Recently heard they contradicted themselves again and are actually recreating the rotary again. Confirm, anyone?
Maybe the rotary will be an option later on, but there are so many issues for R&D to overcome.

I can definitely attest to the AE86/FT86 DNA being shared. The moment I first drove the FRS, it felt immediately familiar. That perfect balance you talk about is what I love about my AE86 and also what I love about the FRS. I think people are expecting a sibling when in fact, it's a reincarnation.

The 90s was the pinnacle of Japanese sports cars. We had the Supra, RX7, MR2, 300ZX, 3000GT, 240SX, Eclipse, NSX, and Miata. I might have one or two but those were exciting days.
