How I Built My First Gameboy Synthesizer [with LSDJ]

- Today I'm going to show how you can get started building a simple synthesizer with an original Gameboy. This is my first try at using LSDJ and creating Chiptune music. This is also my first time speaking in a video, so voice reveal I guess?
Many of the mods I'll be showing are optional as you can start making music as soon as you insert a cart with LSDJ into your Gameboy, however these mods will make writing, composing, and especially playing live much easier.

this is bl00dy fantastic! love it! epic work, and what a tune! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is actually a very interesting content, great job!! Im always amazed of these kind of stuff 😊😊
Thanks for documenting this! It's insanely cool.
This was incredible! 😍
thanks a lot for the video mate💖 it is very helpful for us beginners in chiptune, loved ur performance at the end of the video 💥🚀💖
This is it!!! Amazing...I can't imagined you can do this to a gameboy?! Our first conversation you are planning to do it...now you made it...terrific! Also, you mentioned it was your first time to do a voice over...not bad actually! Your voice is great, nice for voice overs...It is like I am listening in TV narration...hahaha! I am telling the truth! Hehehe! Wow the sound was great...hehe...good work! New supporter here!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it, & I'm happy with how my first video with my voice turned out !
People who are not able to make music always talk about that they could be great if they just had the most expensive equipment that the stars own, I have always said that if you give someone with true creativity two sticks they will still make music, this video shows me yet again that creativity knows no boundaries, that people find a way to make music regardless of the obstacles.
So good!! Love the song!!
this is such a great video! i can't wait to finish my first lsdj setup this year!
hey, this is so cool! it’s a little hard to comprehend the giant amount of effort that must have went into this haha. you’re really talented! hope you’re doing well dude :)
This video is too underrated! I wanna start a project like this at some point
Holy Moly!! This is AMAZING!
Awesomely cool! Nice modification
Dude this is so badass!
I just did a test run of LSDj on an emulator on my PC and it was fun, but your work is way more respectable. Thanks!
Whoa, great job!
holy shit, this is amazing
Now the game boy is a super game boy haha. This is quite amazing good job!
I am impressed!
Holy crap dude this is Awesome...there's just something about the sound. Came across your channel on FB seen the "Gameboy" and had to check it out.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed my first gameboy synth video 😁
ultra sick!!! :D
Criminally underrated video

Normal people: Great track!
Og's: Jsab?
That beat though. *dances awkwardly* 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for
RECHARGEABLE BATTERY link. never seen than before.
They're so easily overlooked but make a mighty difference. I couldn't imagine having to change the batteries now that I can just plug it in!
I’m just like 👀👀👀👀👀 😂😂😂
badass. I love chiptunes, looking to make some beats for a video game my team is developing.
Now this is my fav gambiarra that u can do with Gb
That looks SO DANG COOL
Sweeeeeet!
I love chiptunes! Including the one you whipped up... what is the name of it?
This is great. I just subbed and would love to see you turn More things into a synthesizer. I'm gonna feature you on my New segment Be great. Expect your video on November 16th.
This is a great video. Speaking voice is great, so no worries there. Love the walkthrough. Have you used midi into lsdj? I have only used mGB with midi but when lsdj first came out it came with a midi cable and I am always curious ppls thoughts on midi. the arduinoboy pro is great from catskull.
I want to try working it with midi soon! I've looked into the Arduinoboy pro from Catskull, it looks great.
@@frankiewood6808 It is pretty great. Of all the arduino boards I have bought it is the most useful.
Is it true the prosound mod is necessary with IPS screen upgrade? I've heard the IPS screen can introduce noise or something without the prosound mod
😘😘😘
Can you export tracks off this in either .uge or .mod for gameboy studio?
Can you post the file for the song, it’s so good !
Are you recording the notes in with the keyboard?
did you compose the music using the keyboard, or did you have to do it manually using the gameboy buttons?
the music in the video was manually composed, which I find myself leaning more towards doing after the build, though the keyboard is fun for "riffing" on.
does lsdj allow you to export your music to a .mod file?
Hi~ can I do same thing on my GBASP?
Can this work with any Gameboy, and can you save the data created in lsdj to your computer, or is it like a regular game that only saves to cartridge? I believe you mentioned that it's able to run on an emulator, that would make it easier right?
My flash cartridge has a usb out and I can transfer files onto my computer for safekeeping. & yes, you can also use LSDJ on an emulator, though many like myself really enjoy the idea of harnessing the actual sound of a gameboy from our fingertips haha. Of course if someone just wants to jam and write with LSDJ and use an emulator I think that's a fantastic idea too
@@frankiewood6808 no doubt using the actual GB would be more enjoyable! Thank you for answering, this was super inspiring!
What's difference between this mod and just using lsdj with a regular Gameboy?
Adding the backlight really helps for seeing what's happening on the screen and is absolutely essential if you plan on using the gameboy on stage because you won't see a thing with the regular screen. The stereo mod bypasses the crummy built in amp and you'll get a much clearer signal to record and play with. Lastly the keyboard mod is mostly for fun!
Yeah but, how complicated/frustrating was it to use the keyboard like a normal piano. I have issues with notes being played to fast
It's not as sensitive as Id hope. A fun way to do it nonetheless. I have a link in the description to something called an Arduinoboy. This allows connection to a midi controller which plays with a much better response.
Can you connect a midi keyboard to it instead of a computer keyboard?
yes but you’d need an arduinoboy. I’d be happy to help if you pm, I use to make chiptune haha
Not lag?
Sexy voice? Hawt knuckle tats? Helpful tutorial for a dope instrument with great A/V quality?! Oh hell yeah.
Throw in the power cleaner next…
Nice hebrew keyboard
Is that possible with a gameboy color???
Yes it is!
@@frankiewood6808 Thank you so much!!! For the video and for the answer...i'm going to build one as soon s possible!
Why ruining the gameboy with stereo aux output when all you needed was a Y cable and plug it in the headphones port. That's the exact same signal.
The RCA mod bypasses the built-in amplifier the headphone jack uses
@3:11 Drilling while electronic is attached... as a german person i have to admit that you could have done better ;-)
Hahaha there were a few points while watching over this video where I went "oh wow there are better ways I could've done that" but then again I'm a musician not an electrician. I'm glad I was able to document my first time trying anything like this 😁
@@frankiewood6808 love it ^^
I don't think you built a synth tho.
