I always try to shoot for a thriller, a filler, and a spiller when planting pots. Something tall and and eye catching for the thriller, usually right in the middle. The filler around the thriller, and the spiller that hangs or drapes down the side of the pot. I don't remember where I learned this, but it always seems to work for me!
Yes that’s exactly what I did ❤️ geraniums are my thrillers, petunias are my spillers and I used various fillers.
Hi Jodi, That's what I usually do, too! Geranium in the middle & petunias & sometimes snapdragons around it! Another thing I do is for the drainage, which is to put a small to medium older pot upside down in the middle at the bottom, then put the dirt in. It sure helps not to use so much potting soil! I love your birds 🐦& all the flowers. Maybe fix a special spot for the chipmunks🐿 so they won't eat the birds🐦 food. Maybe use a pole where the chipmunks🐿 can't climb & put the bird🐦 feeder on that! Just a couple of ideas! I just love it that you're so happy when you are in your garden or cleaning up the lawn. I do believe that we make ourselves resist & think we can't do something, but we could have, if we would just push ourselves a little bit harder! I'm one to do that, that's for sure! Plants were ridiculously expensive this year. I am 77, reclaimimg my overgrown garden in Georgia after 2 years neglect...i divided yard into grids, and tackling a section at a time. I will be using weed spray after weeding the best I can to keep things from coming ba ck. But, I'd lost a couple herbs, and my herb garden was at the top of my list. Potted herb price, atrocious. Thankfully, I'm near a plant outlet and have bought much from there. Losing a family member over 2 years ago took me away from gardening. In spite of the heat, it's so good to be back! I get overwhelmed a lot too. I’ve lived in my house by myself for over 30 years. I get tired of having to do everything by myself. My back garden became filled with volunteer trees and shrubs including buckthorn. Area is 70’x 15’. Last fall I finally had a tree removal company come and cut everything down and grind the stumps. This year I’m redoing the whole thing. Planting new shrubs and using landscape fabric to help control the weeds. I’ve found it helps me to break done projects into smaller chunks. Right now I’m working on the first 20’. Your flowers are looking fabulous!

Hi Jodi: Great video once again! So glad you found the Coleus for your shaded front areas. If you have coleus left over , you could put it in your front bed with your hostas you just planted or the shaded area on the other side of your walk. For your irises in the back, there are garden stakes with rings at the top to hold the irises up. You can find them at any big box store that sells plants. It is a common problem that irises get top heavy when they bloom. Your pots look so pretty out back! If the tall dark ones get too hot in the sun, maybe you can use them in the front on either side of your front door and put ferns in them next year? That would look good! Or if there is not enough room on either side of your door, you could put them on either side of your sitting area. Keep working at it, Girl! It’ll all come together!😊
We are giving my son-in-law the Grandpa's weed tool so thank you so much for sharing. The best way to get the cardboard to break down is to put soil over it. Using some kind of garden soil is best because it doesn't have weeds. And watering that down and putting your plants right into that. It will break it down much faster and the weeds won't reappear. I put the soil on pretty thick over the cardboard so that I can plant into it.
Jodi, coleus are super easy to root in water from cuttings of plants you already own
Good for you Jodi, I cleaned up my yard of weeds and got rid of junk like a ripped dog bed, stripped umbrella and some foam tiles. It was depressing me awaiting my knee replacement in two weeks. I fall on the cushy dog bed, scoot on my bum and pull weeds as I go. Looks grand now! I will be quoting Jeremy Renner too, great attitude.
One year I filled one of my cast iron bathtubs with coleuses and they grew huge, so beautiful. Under apple tree so a lot of shade. I need to do that again. Your pots are beautiful, very considerate hubs and big pots cost a lot. I didn’t know that about dark pots. I love hydrangeas but have not been successful with them. I sometimes think it is your enthusiasm that encourages your plants to do so well. You maniac!😆🤣😉
I put seed out with hot sauce that they claim prevent the squirrels from eating, maybe chipmunks too. They say it doesn’t affect the birds.
Oh Jodi, this is the first spring that I won’t be buying flowers to plant. I am hoping hubs will at least water the lawn and the existing perennials, I have always done everything. I hope he waters and feeds me too!😳

We take up some of the room in our big pots with cut up pool noodles from the dollar store. We got that tip from a gardening RUclipsr a few years ago. It also seems to help with drainage (and our budget.😂) Love the addition of the pots to your deck!! Great work, Jodi!

Hi Jodi! You can definitely bring in the hibiscus plant inside for the winter. It is a tropical plant that comes out of Florida most likely and loves heat. It will do well in a sunny area and by the heater vent (you can even set it on top) to keep it alive. Then bring it outside next summer. Also the coleus you can bring in too and give it try. Some Have luck keeping it alive some don’t. Just don’t over water them. They like it dry. If you seen them wither and the soil is dry it is a good time to water them. They always perk right back up. If you overwater they will melt and die. My family owns greenhouses and grow plants so I know a little bit about plants 😉

We finally solved our squirrel issue with the bird feeder and will work on chipmunks too. We have a pole tall enough to reach the bottom of the feeders so we can fill them. We wrapped metal around the post from about 4" up to almost the top of the poll. They can't climb it even though they've tried. We have 2 pieces of wood attached at the top in an X shape so we can have 4 different feeders. Been working for over 5 years now. If we hang from a tree the squirrels would have a field day.

Garden Answer's channel on RUclips will end up giving you a good idea on how many plants per pot just by seeing how she does it and she gives sizes of most or all of the plants she's adding so if you compare your full grown plant sizes to hers it will give you a great idea of how many. Laura is awesome to watch. Their property is absolutely gorgeous! My mom got me a Heartleaf Philodendron for $5.48 at Walmart today and I love the petals! I really hope I can give this plant the attention or lack of that it needs to be happy and thrive. This is my first Philodendron ever. I love Coleus very much and also the orange/yellow one you said you don't remember the name is Celosia! Celosia is fluffy and soft and I freaking love it!

I just have to comment and say that your videos have been a welcome distraction to me so many times since I found them (started watching right when you started decluttering your house) - I watched them both times I got Covid and had to isolate myself (I live alone). I watch them now as I'm feeling estranged from my immediate family and am dealing with a breakup (of sorts). Thank you for keeping them coming!

Hi Jodi, my granny had some of the biggest Hydrangeas bushes and they were a beautiful shade of blue. She would cut bouquets and bring them inside to put in a vase. It made me think that i need to look through my mother's pictures to find one of my granny who was 5 foot 2 standing in front of her hydrangeas. They were a lot bigger than her. God bless.

I bought my first Hibiscus this year and I love it! For barrier control, I cut open lawn bags and put those down. It works really well.
Hibiscus are so pretty! I ended up getting a small one at Walmart ❤️
You can use longer sticks from the back of your property to stake up your irises (tie with twine).

I wouldn’t worry about the sticks and such. Filling with soil gives the plants more root growth and area to get water/nutrients.

Check at the garden center for bloom holders. They are metal stakes with a ring that fits around the blooms. Love them for this purpose.

I always just pack my annuals into the pots. They get really full and overflowing and it looks wonderful. That way I don't have to wait and it doesn't hurt any of the plants to be packed in like that. They like to be near their friends LOL
Snap dragons will reseed and my plants from last year came back this spring. I live in north western Michigan. My pinks also come back every year both in pots and on the ground. I just leave the plants in the pots in the fall and clean them up in the spring. I love free flowers!!

In northern Indiana cardboard typically takes 6-8 weeks to break down if it is covered with mulch or compost for planting depending on how wet it stays and how quick the worms are (they won't eat it as much if it isn't covered with mulch or soil).

lOVING ALL the plants. I am int he process of planting my veggie and herb garden and a few flowers I put to gether two raised beds yesterday to add to the one I made a few years ago. And We have failry small back yard so I covered the rest not onthe deck with landscaping tarp and I am going to fill it in with mulch and pavers as we only have about 20x10 feet of ground space. So less to maintain that way. Gotta get it while the getting is good with the memorial day sales

Oh i have the same problem with chipmunks, and 3 yrs ago they got into my attic . Had my roof done since, but they scare my birds away .

The feeder is hanging on my tree not a pole 😂 so they just club up the tree. They didn’t bother with it at all last year so I don’t know why this year they won’t leave it alone

Using a popsical stick or the handle of a teaspoon can help to get your little plants out of the plastic pots. Run them round the rim. Also, when filling containers, remember you need a thriller, filler and spiller. Thrillers r the centrepiece or show piece upright/tall, fillers will be colourful and spread to fill the rest of the pot and then your spiller is a trailing plant that will grow and flow over the edge. Eg a red cordiline (thriller), lime marmalade heuchera (filler), petunia surfinia big red trailing (spiller). X

Jodi, today was a good day for me to hear your message, so thanks. So easy to get overwhelmed and think about giving up. ❤ I did the cardboard method, and it worked great. I put six inches of compost over it, and my plants love it. Seems to help break down cardboard faster and looks much better while you wait. I waited 2 weeks. It was perfect.

Jodi, not sure you are supposed to do this but has always worked for me...I fill the bottom of planters up with empty plastic bottles or the packing peanuts. Makes the planters way lighter when moving them too!
Yes you can do that and there are so many options! Literally endless to filling the bottom of the pots to take up space and help with drainage ❤️ I use sticks because I have a lot of them 😂
Loving all your flowers this year!!! Coleus is beautiful but it's an annual and can be pricey depending on where you buy it. I tend to buy heuchera or coral bells. They come in a lot of colors as well, love the shade, come back every year, and look beautiful especially when they bloom tiny little flowers. You can grow them in pots or in the ground.

I have peonies that flop over as they grow. But I bought some special half circle shaped double stakes at the garden centre. Works great!

Hi Jodi, So that your pots are not super heavy, you can use torn up pieces of styrofoam or styrofoam packing peanuts at the bottom for drainage.
Yes you can use anything. The sticks I used in my front pots are not heavy and take up a lot of room 😂
fOR THE hydrangeia, my dad used to mow ours down every year and it came back. My mom reminded me when I was talking about how horrible ours looked at our house in the off season. I am so glad to see yours came back too.

Hello Clarke, You guys are having so much fun, Enverything is looking beautiful. Im getting ready to plant #3 White Gardenia's, they smell wonderful. I found them on Teactor Supplies website. I'v been watching the price on several nursery's web pages, and then the sold-out signs started to appear, I said, heck with it and ordered, I pray they do well, their frost proof so i hope they grow to their fullest potential.
I saw you eyeing the Mandevills, they are beautiful. I tried #2 last year, brought them in before the frost came, had no luck. I even kept them in the laundry room with the lites on. Don't know, maybe they needed a grow lite? Im gonna try soaking their roots in water before I totally give up on them.

Hey Jodi…Coleus are beautiful and they will grow big. You can take snips of it and plop it in a cup of water to root and you can plant them! I just started doing this last year. I also had a pot that I brought inside for the winter!!

We don't have big flower beds in Arizona. I spray the entire yard with Ortho One Year Ground Clear to cut down on weeds. Can't grow anything in that. But I was thinking maybe next year, build a raised bed and grow some tomatoes and maybe a few pots for the porch of some kind of flower. Right now I have a small cactus and a bunch of Aloe. I do have my Minnie Root. She's a roadside weed that showed up on her own. She's a big green bush now, with gorgeous lilac-colored flowers. Please keep showing us the birds. I was born and raised in NJ and I really miss the Jays, Cardinals, and Robins...

Was wondering with all the leaves and debris have you bagged up have you considered making a compost pile? You could just add the leaves everytime you have to rake so you wouldn't have to bag them. Minus, all the poison ivy of course. Free compost is always a plus. I'm pretty new to your channel so sorry if this has been discussed vefore.
The coleus are GORGEOUS! I haven't any shade in my yard & the Texas heat would fry them 😢
We gather the leafs, shred them with the lawnmower, bag them and save them. they make great soil for plants and it doesn’t take long for them to decompose.
This year we didn’t even bother to bag them we did gather and shred them but we left them on the ground and in a couple of weeks they had become soil

Hi, Jodi! Suggestion, put some kind of stakes or long dowel stakes and I think they have plant clips to put around the stalk of the plant to connect to the stake. Orchids have little clips and I save them to use to keep the flowers from hanging. Love your garden! I love all your coleuses. Beautiful colors! Peony rings or cages would work for the iris, but in my experience they start falling when they need to be divided. Wouldnt be bad as a back layer in that corner you are working on.....
I'm sure there are lots of videos on dividing iris, but they are fairly easy to dig out, break sections apart of the corms and they basically just very top layer of the soil to put them back. Sometimes they don't bloom the next year, but if you divide right after they get done you might be able to stop that. If you wait til fall trim the leaves down to 6" and it will make them easier to work with, but doing them soon I think they would still need the leaves to recharge.
It is so huge you are probably right that it needs to be divided.
The orangy flower looks like it might be some type of celosia? Not sure, but Im sure google can give you some images to verify.

Did I get it right that your new plants are caladiums? If they are: if it gets too cold outside you can take them inside, I know of indoor habitants that are decades old! So you can just put them outside next year, AND will have gigantic bushes of them 😅
Also it is very easy to propagate them, just but a branch in water, they’ll grow roots very quick.

To support your Iris: we just put a (bamboo) stick in the ground and tie the plans loosely to it! If you take longer strings you can also stabilize more than one per stick 🙂 (And sticks you absolutely have enough in your yard 😅)
