We just got our first chickens a month ago. Golden Comets...we love 'em! So much easier than I thought it would be. It's still exciting to collect the eggs every day. It's also surprisingly relaxing watching our lady-hens roam, scratch and eat. Chickens are great. Thanks for posting this video. We only have four chickens to start, but you gave many helpful tips!
@@brandonfillinger3034 Its not that bad to take care of them during winter ( it does take time and 2 or 3 visits through the day to clean the litter, feed them and pet them a little), but only do it because you like chickens, not to save money on eggs at the store because you are not gonna save money :P I have a insulated coop, a heated water bowl, 2 infrared lights and a fan installed on the wall to keep the humidity out. You can buy young chicks for 13-15$ each in the spring. Most of the coop sold at the store are way to small and not for winter so you will have to build your own or pay for a custom made one. You also have to be aware of the predators in your area. You ll need to dig down to install your fences if you have foxes, minks or any meat lovers around (they can dig pretty deep to get to your chicks)...and a covered top for their outside area for falcons or eagles. I also recommend feeding wild birds away from your coop so they don't hang close by and attract wildlife or try to steal your chicken's meal.

I have a creek and a pond in my yard right next to the coop where they mostly stay around so I don't have to worry about water and I give them pellets and cracked corn like you to. 2 of the hens are pullets and the rest are fully grown. With feeding, we just have a bowl in the coop that we check at 6 am (when I let them out,) 12 pm, and 5 pm (when the sun goes down in the winter.) We have 6 nesting boxes because we are planning on getting more hens soon. They are made from a shelf we used to have and it has little grid like holes all around so we put a kind of wax paper on top and on the bottom so they wouldn't fall through. They built their own nests in 2 of the boxes using some straw. That's all right now. Anyone have some tips? We haven't gotten any eggs yet in the 3 days we've had the hens.

Yes they do. If you will close the nest boxes at night so they can't sleep in them it really helps to keep them clean.

Love your videos
Nice video!
with a rooster in the mix how do you know which eggs are fertilized? can you eat eggs that have been fertilized? i would hate to crack open an egg and see a partially formed chick in my frying pan.
Priceless information here Thank You!
So how did the light work for egg production? You was getting about 24 a day.
I honestly can't tell a big difference. We may hit 26 or 27 some days but no real improvement. I think its an age issue with the chickens.
@@SheratonParkFarms yeah could be
My daughter got her chick's about 10 weeks ago. They grew fast. Living outside in the pen now. I don't know what kind they are . I was wondering when they will lay eggs. Thanks

@@SheratonParkFarms my daughter has 2 chicken laying eggs now. Blue and tan. She says it's from a blonde one and a grey one. She has 5 I believe. So they are starting to now. So about 6 months old . So neat. Especially when I saw that blue egg! 💙

Does anyone know why the egg white in one of my eggs is kind of translucent, and a little grayish.
Hi, love the video, i have 2 questions. Urban chicken farmer here, we have 3 hens and 1 rooster. They are 4 months old and getting close to laying, will they lay in the coop that they sleep in without a specific nesting box? Also is it necessary to separate the rooster at night, he's begun mounting them during the day and sleeps with them at night.
They don't require separation, no.
How do you keep snakes away?
Thx
is it legal in new jersey?
I’m wondering what came first the chicken or the egg ? Any insight on that 🤪
For us it was the chicken. 😂
@@SheratonParkFarms same lol
I ordered a chicken and an egg off Amazon... I will let you know.
