because you are hearing him tell the story. He's not really singing, he is "talking" in his mind. You think his is singing, but the actor knows his job is to voice his character's emotional state, not "sing". His performance is by far more interesting because of that..

This is just wonderful. I didn’t think musical theatre actors could sing like this anymore ie in similar style to the likes of Gordon Macrae. But Joshua Henry sounds like a singer from the Rogers & Hammerstein golden age. He is outstanding.

@@r4b32t11 when I say he is underrated, I mean that when people usually talk about theatre performers, he is not one of the ones people talk about. People tend to talk about the more well known actors over someone like Joshua Henry. I have seen him in several shows now and every time he blows me away with his performance. He can easily go from playing a classic like Billy Bigelow to playing Aaron Burr or Favorite Son in "American Idiot". So yes, with someone as versatile and talented as he is- I do believe he is underrated. He's been steadily performing for years & I can't wait for the day the world recognizes his talent.
Indeed. I know he adores performing Jazz but the truth of the matter is that his somewhat operatic voice he uses for music like this sets him apart from most other musical singers. This style of music shows his voice off much better than the jazz I have heard him sing. He has a voice that is instantly recognizable due to its color and timbre.
@@Yves_Ka Totally agree he should try to explore more this style. Lucky you that can listen to him live! I live out of the USA unfortunately. I would like to see him as a Phantom one day. He is also a very skillful actor, in my opinion. :D
I was waiting to see how he dealt with the original lyrics ("pink and white as peaches and cream). I'm a 75-year-old African-American and I loved this "Soliloquy" so much, that I sang it in front of my high school Music Appreciation class, never thinking about the oddity of having a "pink and white" little girl. Oddly enough, he left the "pink and white" in for the little boys.
Well, it's never been sung like this before--with such musical prowess, sheer virtuosity, and convincing emotion. Just bowled me over. Only once in a blue moon does God reach down and touch somebody like this and give them this kind of extraordinary talent.
I count myself lucky to have seen this performance on stage. My eyes were about starting out of my head, and my jaw was on the floor. Joshua Henry's storytelling is beautiful in this vid, but what I remember from the live performance was his huge energy.
For me, the standard for this song was set by John Raitt in the original broadway cast (1945). No one came close, Joshual Henry not only came close -- he absolutely surpassed it. O. M. G. I just cried.
I don’t know about surpassed, but definitely matched. Matched in power, beauty, richness and tone. Surpassed in emotional depth, absolutely. But then there’s that last note where John Raitt’s voice just flies up a couple of octaves (well, that’s what it feels like anyway) that leaves me stunned every time. Joshua Henry doesn’t do that, but his last note still soars and packs a wallop. I cried, too. I mean no disrespect by disputing whether or not he surpasses John Raitt. It’s a quibble, really. He is absolutely one of the best, no doubt. Stunning.
He is the best Billy Bigelow I’ve watched. He adds so much nuance and emotion that was always needed in the piece that no other actor who portrayed this role has executed successfully. Every other actor who played Billy can be seen struggling with the song itself hence the quality of acting is absent. Joshua Henry is the real definition of triple threat; does not sacrifice one element over the other.
Dang this man's voice just gives me chills. I am SO tired of that generic, heartless, "powerhouse" belting, nasally, squeaky, breathy musical theatre voice that has come to be the norm. Please give me back the wholesome quality timeless voices like these.
I came here after seeing this on Tiktok, and it was AMAZING. And now I'm obsessed and in love. This is just so amazing, the voice is just-- no words to describe! It's climbing up a hill to gaze at the sun rise with the wind blowing around you on a spring day. That's the only way I can describe it.
Mr Henry comes to this role with an extensive background of brilliant musical performances. What a gentleman. Rodgers and Hammerstein would be thrilled. Mr Raitt and MacCrae would applaud loudly as breed. I’ve been a huge fan throughout his illustrious career. Bravo. I hope he keeps doing musicals. Phenomenonal.
I’m normally not a fan of slower and operatic songs with an old timer feel, but Joshua is so stunning this might be the best thing I have ever seen. I have been to near a dozen Broadway shows live, and yet this just floors me. How can a man have so much talent in both acting and singing?
It's terrific to have this intimate recording of Joshua Henry performing Solioquy. I can't believe that I almost missed this revival. I'll never forget its many beautiful moments.
absolutely gorgeous and shattering--a filmed recording session final take that focuses on work-lights singer's face and hands and creates an unforgettable theater performance...i don't want to be unfair, but gordon on the beach isn't what i'll now always hear and see...
I saw a clip of this on TikTok. Fell in love with the words, the delivery, his voice; the whole nine. On a whim, I came to watch the entire performance. I originally assumed the words were from the POV of a man talking a romantic love. Learning this last bit was about his potential daughter just moved me even more! Wow! 🥹🥹🥹 Brava!

Saw him in Carousel last summer and he was astounding! Stole the show from 4 other Tony nominated performers! His version of this song stands up to any and all previous versions! Absolutely incredible voice!
I felt that this was done to death... like If I Were Rich Man ... so very hard to breathe new life into it but Joshua Henry made be cry... brilliant performance and I love how the conductor/musical director is living every moment.. stupendous
No idea this existed- stumbled across it. Unbelievable! Incredible! He beats the shit out of this song and then delivers a perfectly cut diamond on a platinum tray, presented by a unblemished virgin.

Discerning people can appreciate great art like this entire play's collection of music and can share it with others as often as possible, to help others become discerning also in their tastes for the Arts and entertainment. Then there will be many thousands of views of this RUclips video, deservedly so. The 1956 film Carousel was very beautiful, by the way. It-all always makes me cry with happiness. Great voice, interesting interpretation. The bass baritone flavor is a fascinating contrast to John Raitt's original version -- which I was lucky enough to hear in person in the 60s -- which gives a very baritenor sound to the piece
Fabulous, what a performance. I love his voice, he's in the same league as the Hollywood greats...Gorden & Howard. Can't wait to see more of him, his voice is a new love for sure 💕
This is brilliant. Wow, the interpretation, the diction, the characterization--I love this show and Henry as this Billy Bigelow. I am so touched by this rendition and I will remember this forever. Thank you!
This song gets me every single time. I thought for sure I was going to have a son. I am the more masculine partner in a lesbian family and thought I knew how it would be. But when my only child turned out to be a girl, I melted and it was over. I try to be my best for her and give her everything. Yes...ribbons in her hair, fed and clothed in the best that money can buy. My daughter softened me and has made me a sappy mess!
Growing up in an American Idol world, it's become very easy to not be wowed by many voices; a good voice is practically a dime a dozen. But this...I rarely listen to anything solely for the voice, but I could get goosebumps listening to this man sing the phonebook. Utterly masterful.
