Company, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Porgy and Bess, South Pacific, Candide, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George. Just a few of the artistically groundbreaking shows you might have included with some different criteria.

well noted. I am wondering what on earth WAS the criteria?

    • @Evan-vs1ew
      @Evan-vs1ew 10 дней назад +5

I think the criteria used has a lot to do with current name recognition and popularity. "Best" shouldn't be synonymous with popular. Cats? Wicked? Hairspray? Hey, I enjoyed them, but, in my opinion, these don't represent "best." But if popularity is a criteria, well then, there you go...

    • @mumrah07

Merrily? Are you joking? Prior to the recent revival Merrily has always historically been considered one of the greatest musical bombs of all time. And yes, while the recent revival was absolutely breathtaking, in order to be considered among the best of all time, I imagine it would take a lot more than one extremely recent successful staging to meet that criteria.

It will blow you away if you ever get a chance to see a live production. I saw it in LA in the 90s with Ted Neeley (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas) in the starring roles and Dennis DeYoung from Styx (Pontious Pilate). It was incredible. In 2015, my wife and I went to see a screening of the 1973 film with VIP passes that allowed us to sit and chat before the film with Ted, Barry Dennen (Pontious Pilate), and Kurt Yahjian (Annas. During the film, Ted sat between me and wife, constantly nudging us and telling us quick behind the scenes stuff about the film. It was a once in a lifetime moment and I was super emotional the whole time. I've been a fan since I was a little kid in the early 70s.

    1. The Phantom of the Opera
    2. Les Miserables
    3. Wicked
    4. Hamilton
    5. Into The Woods
    9. Mean Girls

When it comes to these types of lists, they represent someone's opinion. There is no right or wrong, so this list represents a fair assessment, though for me, I'd change at least half the list. With that said, as we entered the 21st century, Time magazine did a best list of the 20th century of movies, books, etc. For best Broadway musical, they picked Carousel. In my opinion, it really deserves, at the very least, an honorable mention.

Sadly you left out three of the GREATEST Musicals of all time . The Music Man , Guys And Dolls and Oklahoma . They set the Standard for Musicals .... They are also very family Friendly . Maybe you need to make another list of Musicals People Loved , Just a Thought . I have done the sound now for musicals since 1969 and All I can say is THANK GOODNESS for Wireless Mic's and Meyer Sound Speakers .

I read that the Broadway cast of "Hairspray" called the song, " You Can't Stop the Beat," "You Can't Stop to Breathe."

I basically agree with the list. However, my favorite, SOUTH PACIFIC, the winner of many awards was omitted. Hello Dolly and Mame should have been on the list.

If it was up to me, I would definitely mix up the rankings on this list; in terms of MEMORABLE shows that really strike a chord from beginning to end.
I saw Hamilton live in Chicago and thought it was overrated, but to each, their own.

Cats, Oliver, The Rocky Horror Show, Dreamgirls, The Wiz, 42nd Street, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Aida, In The Heights, Jersey Boys, Rent, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, The Lost Mattress, and other musicals should've been on the list. 🎬🎬🎥🎥📽️📽️📽️🗽🎶🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎹🎺🎺🎷🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🎻🎻🎻🎻

This isn’t really a best list, it’s more like list of longest running shows. There are so many amazing shows that had short runs.

Les Miserables should have come before Chicago and I would have replaced Hamilton with Evita because, in my opinion Evita is a better show and I dislike Hamilton.

I didn't care for Cats. Maybe I wasn't feeling well when I saw it. I loved A Chorous Line. I saw three times. I also loved Hair, Dream Girls, Sweeney Todd, Wicked and The Wiz.

I would argue the stage version of The Lion King was excellent and succeeded in spite of being a Disney property. The quality was due in large part to Julie Taymor’s vision and talent.
