    YES to more inclusiveness. I trained classically and it was micro-aggression CENTRAL. I've fallen out of love with Opera for the most part. I still have my faves, but I'm trying to learn how to sing everything. I appreciate the way you explain the voice and techniques, the Classical teachers I had had a very strict and narrow view of singing and other genres, and it's so not conducive to music and art as a whole. Can't wait to sign up for lessons with you when I get my bags up! Really enjoy your analysis.

      I took piano from 6th to 9th grade. My teacher introduced me to classical music but the one to get me into opera was actually hearing Denyce Graves on PBS. This was before the internet because I’m old lol. I do love Callas but Denyce will always be Carmen to me.

    I LOVE that you drew attention to how we could hear how he physically expressed his emotions. As a musical theatre teacher I'm always drilling that into my students; it's about SO much more than how you song the notes.
    When he sang "it takes talent to do that well" I was delighted because I felt it to my core. Why? Because HE did.

    I've never heard of this singer, but I'm sure glad you introduced him. I grew up on R&H musicals, listening to John Raitt and Gordon MacRae as Billy. Henry also reminds me of the sound of the male lead in South Pacific. He's got an undeniable warmth to his voice that is enchanting. No doubt that YT will have a treasure trove of his music. Can't wait to explore what he's done. Thank you, Sam, from Oklahoma.

    • @anthonysimpsonanygoround8749
      @anthonysimpsonanygoround8749 Месяц назад +1

      He played Jake in “Porgy in Bess” with Audra Mc Donald as Bess and Norm Lewis as Porgy. Joshua would be great as Porgy I agree, but Jake is a strong character and vocally challenging as well. It was in the recent production in which it was presented as a musical rather than an opera. The original is the opera with recitatives and running just over 3 hrs, which I personally prefer as the story should be presented, but I could understand some reasons why certain people would prefer the more abridged musical version.
      I own all the dozen recordings of “Carousel” out there and it’s my favorite musical, the favorite of Richard Rodgers too, and I didn’t see the revival with Joshua but from the recordings and videos I’ve realized he was very strong vocally in the role. In Sept 2024 there is going to be a new recording of all the show’s songs and musical sections (complete, finally, at 107 mins.) conducted by the great John Wilson. 🎠🎪

    I'm 76 and grew up with Goleta, Andrews and the rest . They were great but I always felt something wqs missing . THIS was missing . This kind of gorgeous voice which can act as well as sing. I taught Music and Language Arts for 27 years..I created some electives about the American Musical Theater and another about the American Dramatic Theater. If I were still teaching I would DEFINITELY include this man's and also Jason Donica. Huge ranges, huge power and it seems huge reserves of power underneath the singing. I love the way this man goes from speech to singing and there is no difference in tamber or the quality and depth of the sound..We have really reached a Golden Age with these two men singing in shows..

    I had the luck of being introduced to Joshua Henry as Aaron Burr in Hamilton in Chicago, and have loved him ever since. He lit up the stage - definitely the star of the production. (dare I say I liked his better than Leslie Odom's performance) The fact that he could switch between that role and something much more traditional/classical like this role astounds me. And that he sounds like a bass/baritone AND can sing in a tenor's range. What a gift!

  • @maia_gaia

    My biggest issue with carousel is that it very much feels like the music and the book are telling completely different stories. Like the songs are beautiful and portray billy as a very complex character who makes some bad choices but is trying to be good while the actual spoken scenes are just him being a terrible person. It just doesn't mesh well, imo. BUT I will always love the music and will take any opportunity to see it just to hear the score

    • @anthonysimpsonanygoround8749
      @anthonysimpsonanygoround8749 Месяц назад

      That’s an interesting observation on the character, but there are many clues during the story that offer insight into his more sensitive and even philosophical side. Here are examples: Julie references that Billy enjoys the smell of flowers (while someone else like Mr Snow by contrast would be more industrious and ambitious to plant and cultivate them), and we’ve also seen Billy’s awareness of nature as with the wind and the sea in “If I Loved You”, …we see Billy cavorting with Jigger but mentioning how a “chrysanthemum sprout” would come out of a whale…Julie’s decree that Billy could turn gentle and thoughtful when listening to the music from the carousel which he dearly misses…Billy’s reflecting on how he would eventually be judged by God…his desire to give the star, a somewhat spiritual gift to the daughter he had never previously met….and many other examples.
      The fact that Julie sees charm and tenderness behind the false bravado is a key to the fact that we must be able to do it also, and you’re right that he’s at his most appealing during the musical sections, but that was the whole motivation for Rodgers and Hammerstein to adapt the somewhat unsympathetic character in “Liliom” into a more two-toned personality and they chose to do it mostly through the aid of song. One of Billy’s unfortunate traits is that he’s already been judged unfairly by the community as somewhat of an outsider with a previous bad reputation, and he never really gets to express even musically with the community and even when singing alongside Julie they never actually are in voice together. We have to feel a certain sympathy for all the characters in the musical (and they all have their flaws but admirable traits as well). It was a real challenge for the composers to try to rise above the character’s bad traits and try to present him as one who would learn from his actions and seek repentance, forgiveness, love and ultimately acceptance in a judgmental community, a challenging relationship, and complex world! 🎠🎪

    I didn’t even think about the fact that it was out of the ordinary for this role to be done by an African-American performer. The production I worked on for the university I graduated from cast a black man as Billy and that’s the only production I’ve ever seen, so it’s what I’m used to. That actor went on to play King Triton when we did Little Mermaid. The same theatre department cast another black actor as Valjean in Les Mis.

    Hey Sam! I was wondering... Can you talk about Adele,maybe do an analysis on her voice? I have been hearing a lot about her "audible breath" and how that messed up her voice and created problems with the cords? IDK Maybe some other singer that does that? I like Bjork a lot,and I think she used to do that too,but has also had voice issues. Please? Pretty please? Thanks!

    Hey Sam. Could you please make a video analyzing Seu Jorge e Ana Carolina - É isso ai (The Blower’s Daughter). Seu Jorge is one of my favorite brazilian singers and I would like to understand his technique to sing high notes with a dark and rasp tone.

      That’s no coincidence-Joshua did a great job …both Billy and Gaston are strong baritone roles with complex characterizations. Richard White was Gaston in the original animated feature but prior to that he had also portrayed Billy in a production of “Carousel”. 🎠🎪
