ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.
ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CAROUSEL
Set in a small New England factory town, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless musical Carousel describes the tragic romance between a troubled carnival barker and the young woman who gives up everything for him. Elevated to an epic scale with a sweeping musical score that features some of the most beloved numbers in the American songbook, and incandescent ballet sequences, this story of passion, loss, and redemption introduced Broadway to a new manner of musical drama and would captivate theatergoers for generations to come.

i've yet to see a comment about Jessie Mueller and Joshua Henry's vocal dexterity-here it's very classical-esque, very operatic, focused on the techniques and very grand. and yet both of them can also belt like there's no other, perform crazy vocal riffs, do jazzy scatting and stuff like that, it's so great! i love them
Alexis :D they’re so versatile!
Agreed!
I agree!
This is one of my favorites along with Almost Like Being In Love with Kelly O'Hara and Patrick Wilson; both just make my heart and soul soar. Thank God they did a studio recording for posterity.
You ain't de only one of us who feels that way my friend - WOW! I love them so much every time I listen to them sing this it brings me to the point of tears. They are perfect together.
Joshua Henry exists in this world and they cast Russell Crowe in Les Miz 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Dayzie 732 I think the same thing when I listen to Norm Lewis!
___________ exists and they cast Russel Crowe. I mean, you could almost blindfold someone, spin them around, and cast the first person they pointed to and it would have been better.
😀!
yeah but les mis is a pile of garbage anyway
Joshua has more personality and charisma than Russell Crowe ever had on his best day.
Oh that girl’s voice is pure liquid gold! What a wonderful vocal couple those two make... heavenly!
Broadway star Jessie Mueller!
I agree!
Many, many years ago, I was a member of the chorus for this show! T’was wonderful!
Yeah Jessie Mueller also originated the role of Jenna in Waitress and Carole King in Beautiful. She does the legit Rogers and Hammerstein equally well as the pop sound
She's the best Julie Jordan I've ever heard, no offense to the others
The contrast of Jessie’s voice in waitress to carousel is astounding. What incredible range. Stunning. She has such a glorious soprano vibrato. 😍 and Joshua’s voice… smooth, buttery, rich quality. Geezus. What incredible instruments they have.
I thought so too! It’s crazy to me that it’s the same voice!
@@mattkugler8068 she has even MORE of my respect for that level of range. I'm blown away.
This is my first exposure to Jessie. I immediately thought of Barbara Cook.
@@suhseal Agreed! Pretty incredible!
@@aarondyer.pianist I can totally see that!
I literally cannot get over Joshua Henry. This is my first experience with him. I had heard Jessie as Jenna (waitress is one of my favorites) but hearing Joshua’s voice I’m floored! His voice is so grand I feel like I’m being serenaded by a prince calling up to me while I’m in a tall tower waiting for his saving. And I’m not even gay
"literally"
Broooo. His voice is sillllk
You called it 😂He just played Rapunzel’s Prince
@@hijodelaisla275 ?
Lol since you posted this he’s been in Waitress and played a Prince in ITW
Joshua Henry played this role unlike any other. He deserved every bit of praise he received for it.
And, he ain't very ugly!
@@erik1836 Will you shut it about his looks
@@erik1836 he’s not ugly at all bruh he’s handsome
@@krabs707 I assumed they were being sarcastic, seeing as he isn't at all ugly and therefore I assumed that was their point, his gorgeous looks on top of his magnificent voice.
@@DrJones20 Don't be jealous.
Omg their voices are like silk
1- I just love the way their voices just blend and dance around each other
2- This man... has one of the most beautiful male voices I have ever heard. The control. The power. Smooth like churned butter.
3- I say this from a standpoint of where I typically only prefer the official studio, (specifically) original cast, movie version from the 1950s... I dont usually like to hear anyone else's voices on my iconic roles. None of this talk-singy overacting stage play vocals... This on the other hand... was just beautiful.
I love hearing Jessie do more legit stuff! She's got a killer belt but she sounds like a Disney princess
Joshua Henry is just magnificent beautifully sung and most importantly acted
And, he's not very ugly.
@@erik1836 ??
@@erik1836 Maybe you should stop trying to be clever w that confusing phrase. It isn't working.
I NEED Joshua to be cast as the Phantom. Like now
Yesssss!!
I am thinking the same thing! He would be incredible
Omgggg
Have to admit, that would almost make that musical watchable. Not quite, but almost.
@@tejaswoman Aww, you cute little rube!😂
Joshua really deserved the Tony for this incredible performance. His performance on stage, as here, was miraculous to witness.
Rogers and Hammerstein were absolute masters of their genre and this is their masterpiece.
I agree!
They wrote a few masterpieces. This was Rodgers' favorite which I don't understand given that they wrote The King and I.
@@richardmayora1289 The story line of Carousel is somewhat strange and certainly dated but it is the music and the use of songs to push the story forward like Opera (Soliloquy for example) that is most impressive. The other musicals - the King and I included - are grander and more popular for it but Carousel is the pinnacle of their collaboration.
They wrote many wonderful songs, but I can't think of any lovelier than "If I loved you".
@@denisej4813 Agreed.
Separately, Joshua Henry and Jessie Mueller are magic. Together they are perfection. I LOVE Gordon MacRae. He was probably the first performer I had a crush on as a young girl (I was a musical geek from an early age). When Joshua Henry started singing I gasped. He captures the essence of Gordon so well. And Jessie; she is such a musical chameleon. Her voice is just too perfect in this.
Yay Jessie Mueller unruined a song my mom uses to annoy me!
The orchestra is stupendous, such talented and skilled museums. Joshua Henry's voice is magnificent. He is a superstar! Would love to see Joshua Henry star as Billy in a remake film of "Carousel." He'd win an Academy Award for certain. This is so incredibly moving, Pure perfection by singers Joshua Henry and Jessie Mueller, and by the orchestra and conductor. What extraordinary talent!!!! Jessie Mueller is awesome!
There was actually going to be a film remake with Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway but that project has now been apparently shelved.
One of the greatest love songs ever written for a musical.
He has been cast as Gaston in the Beauty and the Beast 30th anniversary special on ABC. Vocally he can nail it.
oh man, that's gonna be fun. I'm going to have to keep an eye out.
I heard this heart touching piece when I was 4yo boy at a concert that my parents took me to - Now at 66yo I always love listening to it. What a wonderful rendition that I have come acrossed on RUclips.
amazing how jessie is still acting out to the song as it being sung. like when he tells her to look up and she does it. just shows how amazing of an actress she is
It's an obvious and intuitive thing to do when you're voice acting
Reminds me of John Rait!
@@DrJones20 "kind of"
@@hijodelaisla275 What are you trying to say to me?
@@DrJones20 I'm not trying.
This is my favorite musical, very dark, very lovely. I’ve done 3 productions of it, once as Billy. This is by far the most beautiful recording of this song I’ve ever heard. It remains as one of the greatest acting and singing duets in the American stage. It’s the the key to the whole show, and it tears my heart out every time.
the most genius sequence in musical history is If I Loved You: beautiful music and perfect character development
Absolutely! The most genius sequence ever! So complex and beautiful. Wagnerian and epic!
I love Joshua Henry so so so so so much. Words can’t describe how soothing I find his voice.
And he's such a nice and cool human being. I got the opportunity to work with him right before he did this. He and I would be in the wings talking about this him doing this Musical and the some inside info to it. He just had a baby before he left to do this Musical.
The show I worked on with him was the first national tour of the musical HAMILTON! He played Burr!
Same here - amazingly powerful - and uplifting.
One of Rogers and Hammerstein's best numbers period. The lushness of the melody, the lyrics and the dialog are like a woven tapestry filled with tension, playfulness and longing that leaves you wanting more......and this perfomance is absolutely spectacular.....
aaaaggghhh Jessie Mueller and Joshua Henry sound amazing together! Sendin' love from the Philippines ❤😍
Koj Custodio back to ya from the USA! I agree!
With no musical knowledge or education, I only know what I enjoy listening to and Jessie Mueller and Joshua Henry both sing with so much sweet expression, it is pure joy.
I need people to agree with me that he would be a perfect Phantom. His voice is so beautiful and more than capable of doing the role more than justice.
R&H created magic with this American classic, If I Loved You. Thank you orchestra, actors, and conductor for this memorable experience!
Jessie's voice is pure and so lyrical. Perfect diction and articulation! Lovely, and absolutely perfect for this role.
She's got a beautiful voice, but OMG, his is freaking velvet!!!! Dang!!!!
not to be cursed but is this song basically "haha jk... unless" 👀
The whole sequence is very Wagnerian in it's complexity and use of motifs. I count at least 6 distinct tunes, start to finish. Pure brilliance! And much credit to Rodgers' orchestral arranger, Robert Russell Bennett!
The orchestration matches the beauty of the human voices in its complexity and subtlety. Just gorgeous.
Beautiful performance as also was the 2016 Chicago revival with Steven Pasquale and Laura Osnes. Jessie was the third artist who sang both Carrie and Julie after Barbara Cook in 1954 Carrie and in 1957 Julie and Audra Mc Donald Carrie in1984 and Julie in a concert with Hugh Jackman as Billy. But Barbara was the only who played both roles on stage productions because Jessie was Carrie in a 2012 Concert performance. Shirley Jones was the only who played both Julie in the 1956 movie and Nettie in a stage perfomance.Barbara Cook rejected the role of Nettie in the 1984 revival because she said that it wasnt for her voice and Shirley Verrett played the part. If she had s done it it would have been the only one to play the three Carousel ladies. But listen now thos excellent performance..
Thank you for pointing out those performers who portrayed more than one character from “Carousel” in their careers. I’m an avid fan of “Carousel” and it’s fascinating to see how varied the interpretations are depending on who plays what role. For example, Robert Rounseville (film) and Jason Danieley (NY Philharmonic on PBS) were both Enoch Snow but portrayed quite differently. Jessie Mueller was equally effective as Carrie and Julie, two different roles acted and sung in very distinctive ways. The significant revival you mentioned on Broadway in 1994 was truly a milestone, and it would have been interesting to see Barbara Cook in the role of Nettie. As long as we’re at it, that role had been played recently in the Regents Park Open Air Theatre in London by Joanna Riding, who had starred as Julie in the 1993 London revival. Hugh Jackman has played Curley in “Oklahoma!” and Billy in a concert version of “Carousel” (and almost starred in a film remake which has been shelved) and is presently in “The Music Man”, all of which are Baritone roles portraying swaggering male “anti-hero” character types.
wow two divine singers and actors and a truly magical orchestra. The orchestra brings so much drama to the scene, and JM & JH work with it so seamlessly
This video tricked me... i thought this was the whole vibe of Carousel: a sweet song in a sweet musical where two lovesick people fall in love and live happily ever after...a 2 hour and 30 minute show later, im ready to cry myself to sleep. hope you're happy, R&H...
They just don't write musicals like this anymore.............:-(
YET! I'M ON MY WAY! 🤗!
Orlando Cordova i’m intrigued
Orlando Cordova can’t wait 😊
Jessie Meuller is so incredibly versatile!!! What a brilliant vocal technician she is!!!
Dear God; are they not absolutely magnificent together?
JOSHUAH HENRY!!! WHAT A VOICE!!! WHAT A VOICE!!! i kept listening to this again and again, absolutely amazing! Jessie Mueller, flawless sweet voice! ❤❤❤
It's nice to hear this music sung the way it's meant to be sung, by trained singers, it brought tears to my eyes to hear Joshua Henry's take on this song. Beautiful.
Jesse has an amazing and emotionally sweet sounding voice.. she's great.. One of the best rendition i have ever heared.
Joshua have the sexiest manly voice. She sings so beautifully and with so much feeliing.
i went to see them on Broadway. Best day of my life.
It's better than when Gordon mcrea perfo this
@@donaldgordon3991 Not better, just different. Both performers deserve their accolades.
BEST 9 MINUTES AND 18 SECONDS EVER
Let’s talk about the orchestra! Direction and timing is perfect. Amazing ❣️
I love this version ❤ Their voices are so beautiful. The control from both of them is stunning.
Joshua Henry and Jessie Mumer are a delight to listen to what talent, a joy to the ear
Joshua is simply sublime - his soul shines throughout. What a treat to witness this ♥️
I can’t help but crying at how beautiful these characters are written, especially Billy wanting to be masculine but yet so fragile. And Julie who is also a poor soul and trusts him. The poetic image of the flowers falling down because, as Julie says, it’s just their time to do it, cracks me up every time, especially trough Jessie’s crystalline voice.
I just stumbled upon this performance, not knowing anything about either of them. Now I know one thing for sure...they are absolutely great.
The poetry of Hammerstein's lyrics for this song makes me smile every time I hear it.
Oscar was a minor poet.
He is was a post and a romantic idealist. My favorite lyricist.💙
Can we just talk about the full on acting Jessie is doing though! It's amazing. They're so Amazing!!
We see EVERYTHING they both do!!! So amazingly outstanding talent!!!Woo!!
ABSOLUTELY A LOVELY RECORDING!!!! LOVE IT
In my whole life I'v never heard " The Bench scene " sung so perfect with laberto ,song Thank you ..I can see the smiles on there faces
It's ok, but Gordon MacRae is the tops
jessie mueller forever. love from the philippines!
What a beautiful scene/song/sentiment. Certainly a light year ahead of broadway stuff today.
Perfect! Jessie was excellent in an earlier production as the best friend, so it's wonderful to see her singing the female lead. Wish this was available on DVD.
I saw them on stage a couple years ago. it was with discount tickets, orchestra I believe. I was thrilled at the levels added to Henry's character being black, especially with lines like "ain't ya scared of me?" also, the DANCING! and the carousel itself ;v;
Oh my gosh... Joshua Henry's voice...😍
Oh my goodness!! So beautiful. How have I missed this?
this is so amazing! the voices, the music, a broadway classic...
Bravo! Bravissimo!! What a fantastic pairing and such a wonderful recording! I'm glad that I had the opportunity to watch it - and the headphones to REALLY enjoy it.
their voices are like magic
This song is so eclectic - it's all over the place in terms of vocal style - they both pulled it off brilliantly. I love Kelli O'Hara in the female role best, but this guy has become my new favourite male part. Wow.
I've heard this song sung so many times by many different people, and it's never done a thing for me... until now.
In the 1970s, a singer from U.K. VINCE HILL, had an LP of RODGERS and HAMMERSTEIN songs.
His version of The Soliloquy, is excellent. ...this is not meant as a comparison, with Joshua, but just for your info. There is also a You Tube “Live Version onT.V. Of Vince singing this song.
The emotion in Joshua’s eyes when he sings the main chorus is almost as heavenly as his voice!
Joshua Henry is amazing!!!!!!!!
He is also a wonderful father; I saw an interview with him when his son was only a month old and the love emanating from him was practically palpable.
Beautiful - I just listened to Gordon MacRae & Shirley Jones version which I have always loved - I now have a 'new version' to love 💕
Wow! Such a beautiful melody and sung so well!
I never been so happy. Such good singing, both of them on those high notes. Then the story of how they fell in love. I started crying and I'm not very emotional. I practice this song alot too.
Who's crying? _I'm_ not crying. _You're_ crying!
How is it possible for something to be so perfect
If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know.
If I loved you,
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
Round in circles I'd go!
Longin' to tell you,
But afraid and shy,
I'd let my golden chances pass me by!
Soon you'd leave me,
Off you would go in the mist of day,
Never, never to know how I loved you
If I loved you.
If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know.
If I loved you,
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
Round in circles I'd go!
These two have good voices. Well done!
Are you often given to understatement? LOL They have exquisite voices.
@@erik1836 To each his own.
Wow! This is the closest I've ever heard to the original. Beautiful
Glorious singing and acting. Just beautiful.
She's got the finest voice
This is magical. I’m speechless. When talent can move you to tears.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! To: Jessie, Joshua, the musicians, orchestra conductor, and engineers. Its the end of a long and wonderful day with me and it is ending a wonderfully pleasing way. Praise God for blessing these folks with their talents and their dedication to the art they've to for our pleasure. Every note sung and every syllable spoken excited me and drew me in. Oh happy day! And thanks for posting.
This was brilliant. The best rendition of this I have ever heard (and seen)! So wonderful.
That moment when you're so used to hearing Jessie sing Carole King or Jenna. This is incredible.
Really nice renditions from both singers!
Amazing vocalist ( both ) but I must say Joshua Henry ‘s voice with such depth makes this absolutely incredible ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
thank you for blessing me with this lovely content
Joshua Henry is fantastic! His voice is like liquid gold. Such a rich quality and powerful range. His version of “If I loved you” is my favorite!
I love Jessie
Brilliant vocals .. from them both .. great thespians too.
I want to hear him sing Ole Man River from Show Boat...
Magnificent, sumptuous.. just glorious. And emotional. Thank you.

Oh, my God! Those two voices are magnificent!! This is what youtube discoveries are all about!!!
Billy: [spoken]
That your name? Julie? Julie somethin’?
Julie: [sung]
Julie Jordan.
Billy: [sung]
You’re a queer one, Julie Jordan.
Ain’t you sorry that you didn’t run away?
You can still go, if you wanta-
Julie:
I reckon that I keer t’choose t’stay.
You couldn’t take my money
If I didn’t hev any,
And I don’t hev a penny, that’s true!
And if I did hev money
You couldn’t take any
’Cause you’d ask, and I’d give it to you!
Billy:
You’re a queer one, Julie Jordan.
Have y’ever had a feller you give money to?
Julie:
No.
Billy:
Ain’t y’ever had a feller at all?
Julie:
No.
Billy:
Well y’musta had a feller you went walkin’ with-
Julie:
Yes.
Billy:
Where’d you walk?
Julie:
Nowhere special I recall.
Billy:
In the woods?
Julie:
No.
Billy:
On the beach?
Julie:
No.
Billy:
Did you love him?
Julie: [spoken]
No! Never loved no one-I told you that!
Billy: [spoken]
Say, you’re a funny kid.
Want to go into town and dance maybe? Or-
Julie: [spoken]
No. I have to be keerful.
Billy: [spoken]
Of what?
Julie: [spoken]
My character.
Y’see, I’m never goin’ to marry.
[sung]
I’m never goin’ to marry.
If I was goin’ to marry,
I wouldn’t hev t’be sech a stickler.
But I’m never goin’ to marry,
And a girl who don’t marry
Has got to be much more pertickler!
Billy:
Suppose I was to say to you that I’d marry you?
Julie:
You?
Billy:
That scares you, don’t it?
You’re thinkin’ what that cop said.
Julie:
No, I ain’t. I never paid no mind to what he said.
Billy:
But you wouldn’t marry anyone like me, would you?
Julie:
Yes, I would, if I loved you.
It wouldn’t make any difference what you-even if I died fer it.
Billy:
How do you know what you’d do if you loved me?
Or how you’d feel-or any thin’?
Julie:
I dunno how I know.
Billy:
Ah-
Julie:
Jest the same, I know how I-how it’d be-if I loved you.
[sung]
When I worked in the mill, weavin’ at the loom
I’d gaze absentminded at the roof,
And half the time the shuttle’d tangle in the threads,
And the warp’d get mixed with the woof…
If I loved you-
Billy: [spoken]
But you don’t.
Julie: [spoken]
No, I don’t…
[sung]
But somehow I ken see
Jest exackly how I’d be…
If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I’d want you to know.
If I loved you,
Words wouldn’t come in an easy way-
Round in circles I’d go!
Longin’ to tell you, but afraid and shy,
I’d let my golden chances pass me by.
Soon you’d leave me,
Off you would go in the mist of day,
Never, never to know
How I loved you-
If I loved you.
Billy: [spoken]
Well, anyway-you don’t love me. That’s what you said.
Julie: [spoken]
Yes…I can smell them, can you?
The blossoms. The wind brings them down.
Billy: [spoken]
Ain’t much wind tonight. Hardly any.
[sung]
You can’t hear a sound-not the turn of a leaf,
Nor the fall of a wave, hittin’ the sand.
The tide’s creepin’ up on the beach like a thief,
Afraid to be caught stealin’ the land.
On a night like this I start to wonder what life is all about.
Julie: [sung]
And I always say two heads are better than one, to figger it out.
Billy: [spoken]
I don’t need you or anyone to help me.
I got it figgered out for myself. We ain’t important. What are we?
A couple of specks of nothin’. Look up there.
[sung]
There’s a helluva lot o’ stars in the sky,
And the sky’s so big the sea looks small,
And two little people-
You and I-
We don’t count at all.
[spoken]
You’re a funny kid. Don’t remember ever meetin’ a girl like you.
You-are you tryin’ t’get me to marry you?
Julie: [spoken]
No.
Billy: [spoken]
Then what’s puttin’ it into my head?
You’re different all right.
Don’t know what it is.
You look up at me with that little kid face like-like you trusted me.
I wonder what it’d be like.
Julie: [spoken]
What?
Billy: [spoken]
Nothin’.
I know what it’d be like.
It’d be awful.
I can just see myself-
[sung]
Kinda scrawny and pale, pickin’ at my food,
And lovesick like any other guy-
I’d throw away my sweater and dress up like a dude
In a dickey and a collar and a tie…
If I loved you-
Julie: [spoken]
But you don’t.
Billy: [spoken]
No I don’t.
[sung]
But somehow I can see
Just exactly how I’d be.
If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I’d want you to know.
If I loved you,
Words wouldn’t come in an easy way-
Round in circles I’d go!
Longin’ to tell you, but afraid and shy,
I’d let my golden chances pass me by.
