The number of times Helpless has to pause while Satisfied just has Angelica singing her thoughts as quickly as she can shows just how fast Angelica thinks. She's talking as fast as is humanly possible, and normal time still has to pause for us to follow her.
I notice that before Alexander met Eliza, Angelica had the time to sing because he was all to herself but the moment leading up to Alex and Eliza meeting, she begins to rap symbolizing that maybe she needed to get all her thoughts out about how she feels for Alexander to herself before they get married. Also in satisfied when the letters don’t go to Eliza its like she had Alexander to herself again and she begins to sing
I’ve never noticed how she describes their first meeting as setting a flame in her and you can literally hear the sound of a match being lit when he kiss her hand at 1:56. The details throughout this entire scene are just genius.

It always amazed me how easily Hamilton was able to focus his attention from one sister to the next. Angelica knew this but Eliza is none the wiser. She’s smitten as soon as she sees him but Hamilton just wanted the Schuyler name and he didn’t care which sister he got it from in the beginning.
Burr: “A winter's ball and the Schuyler sisters are the envy of all. Yo, if you can marry a sister, you're rich, son.” Hamilton: “Is it a question of if, Burr, or which one?”

Hamilton is confused that Angelica lead him to Eliza but he heard Schuyler and knew he had to take his shot. These songs are just heartbreaking to me because you know what Angelica is giving up and what Eliza is receiving.
Satisfied’s choreography was so hard for the team to learn. After finishing Helpless, were told “you know what you did just then? yeah, now you have to do it backwards.” Especially with the turntable floor.
B Casey okay I'm actually confused if I'm just looking at the wrong parts but to me it looks like they're doing the same choreo but just do a different song? Like they're not actually going in reverse

She actually says he was right I will never be satisfied which is a follow up to what he told her when they introduced each other when he told her she was like him
At 3:32 you can see Hamilton looking at Angelica, which symbolises that he already liked her. But then when Angelica introduced him to her sister, he was forced to look at Eliza. I think in his point of view he noticed that Angelica doesn't like him (because she introduced Eliza to him) so he just gave up and decided to pursue Eliza 😭
i feel so bad for angelica she put her feelings aside for her sister to be happy but she never thought of who alexander would be happy with. I love how she was trying to be a good big sister tho
@Yay Yay: There is debate about that. Ron Chernow's biography of Hamilton inspired Lin to write the musical, "Hamilton.". In his book, Chernow makes it plain that Hamilton and Angelica were extremely flirtatious, to the point that many thought they were having an affair.
@Yay Yay I’m prettyy sure they both liked each other as a brother and sister would. I mean just take a look at the letters exchanged between them. Sure, it’s playful and a bit of flirtatious but most of the time they regard each other as brother and sister. Not to mention, Angelica was married years before Alexander and Elizabeth.
@@rosesrosesandroses1201 Nah, they didnt like each other. Also, Eliza deserved someone better. But i dont feel bad for Angelica, she did the right thing. Their relationship was more just "attraction"
Honestly I joke all the time that he should've just gone to the summer house and had a threesome with his wife and sister in law instead of having the affair 😂
This is why when the cast was asked what was the hardest part of the show, Ramos said "Satisfied" because they had just done "Helpless" and then had to turn around and do the same thing in reverse.
@@Oratual_ They did the choreography for Helpless backwards for the "rewind" section in Satisfied. This video shows Helpless played in reverse (rewinding it) so you can see how the choreography matched up to them physically doing it backwards for Satisfied.
Did anyone else notice that in Helpless, there is more blue lighting, maybe symbolizing Eliza. In Satisfied, there is more pink lighting which could be symbolizing Angelica
Yes! I would expect this. Lightning like this isn’t very common, a good example is Heathers, in the scene where Veronica yells at Chandler outside the party, there’s a dumpster fire that’s red (Chandler’ color) while the rest of the lighting is blue (Veronica) while the red is taken over by the blue to show Veronica overruling Chandler- something similar.
I noticed it because of Burr, Hamilton, and Laurens and that dance move with all three of them moving like they did when they said "Ladies" before. I honestly didn't hear them say the "ladies" part again. But, I just liked that particular move and so it caught my attention.
i always get chills when angelica belts "union" towards the end when they're going through the wedding again and you see alexander and eliza kiss again but on the turntable i don't know w h y but it's so powerful to me
Wow the timing where in satisfied she says “if I tell her that I love him” at the EXACT same time I’m helpless she makes the joke about the harem. My mind is blown!
Did you also know that what Angelica says after the harem joke (if you really loved me you would share him) is historically accurate? blog.oup.com/2015/11/friendship-alexander-hamilton-angelica-church-broadway/ « I love him very much and if you were as generous as the Old Romans,” she wrote Eliza in 1794, “you would lend him to me for a while.”
Angelica went through all of those emotions all on her own and its crazy how we didn't see it before 'Satisfied' started. Goddammit! This is a MASTERPIECE!!!
We did - Lin's line, 'Renee tried to take a bite of me'. When you hear it on the soundtrack it sounds as if Lin is simply playing and Philippa doesn't take him seriously, but when I saw it on Disney+ I realised that Phillipa looks round in distress and Lin has to comfort her.
This is the moment that got me hooked on Hamilton. Up until this point I was like "yeah, ok, it's cool I guess but I don't the get hype" and then Renee came and started singing "I remember that night I might just regret that night..." and I was completely blown away. I pretty much love all of the songs and performances, but this is my absolute favorite. Can't believe I watched years of The Good Wife where Renee had a small part (can you say underused?) to only find out how amazing and talented she is in 2020.
Same here! I liked King George's parts but didn't really get the appeal of having rap songs in a musical. Then I saw satisfied. That just changed everything for me.
Okay, so I just spent the past minute rewinding that part to listen for it (pun unintended, lol) but I heard it and then compared it to Satisfied when Angelica says rewind and it sounds EXACTLY the same! Thank you for pointing it out!
My favorite part is that when Eliza says "Angelica wants to form a harem" in Helpless and in Satisfied Angelica says "If I tell her that I love him" at the same part. It makes me think that Angelica confessed to Eliza and Eliza just took it as a joke and Angelica never corrected her.
Supposedly the part where she says, 'I'm just saying if you really love me, you would share him' was taken from an actual letter that Angelica had written to Eliza.
I love the part at 4:50 where she’s screwing her eyes shut as she sings while Hamilton and Eliza kiss right in front of her, I know it’s at least partly to help with the singing but it also feels like while she’s happy that Eliza’s happy, it pains her to remember that she bought Eliza’s happiness with her own and she can’t bear to watch
It’s so funny- and then…It really shows how Alex was just trying to get one of the sisters but not actually that interested in them. He just really wants the name, that sleazy bitch..
id never seen the two songs side by side. its SCARY how perfect this is. the people that put this all together are absolute geniuses edit: WHAT? 7k??? thanks yall!
all this time I was thinking oh their just similar on the key parts so we catch on and line noooo it is every single movement they are all truly brilliant!!
3:56 The fact that "if I tell her that I love him" is the same part as "I'm just saying if you really loved him you would share him" is AMAZING and GENIUS and PERFECT
Renee's voice in this song is just amazing. The range of this song is so over the place, but she is completely on point and those notes she hits at the end is just so great. I'm in awe of her talent.
This was by far my favorite part of the production from a theatrical stand point. When they did the choreography backwards, I was blown away. It did not feel like a play at that point. There was no way that was done live. But it was, which made it all the more impressive.
Did anyone else notice that in Helpless, there is more blue lighting, maybe symbolizing Eliza. In Satisfied, there is more pink lighting which could be symbolizing Angelica
I think the craziest part about this is before Angelica introduces Alex to Eliza, he’s completely smitten by her (Angelica). That’s why in Satisfied when he says “Schuyler?” it’s a bit more curious/confused than in Helpless; he isn’t sure why she’s introducing them because they seemed to hit it off so well.
As someone who's done theatre for years actually watching these side by side is insane. The blocking is immensely perfect between the two and her stage presence is so much felt in both pieces on multiple viewings
it makes total sense why theyre using the same choreography, since angelica is having flashbacks to these same moments and also i like that they still said "LADIES" because it's the same moment as she thinks this
@@WeneedmoreGodsinTshirts It's very quiet and echoey in Satisfied, but it really is there! Right in the moment's pauses between Angelica's first verses after Rewind, when she starts remembering. ...Try listening to the CD?
Historical reference that she wasnt just some woman linked to Hamilton. I think even the fact that Lafayette walking toward her before Hamilton meant her historical significance...or at least someone notable during the era...
@@lxkerrigan Historically, Angelica orchestrated for Lafayette to be broken out of prison. And it almost worked, except his carriage got lost and he was rearrested. So yeah, even that little bit where Lafayette is walking towards her holds so much weight.
This is absolutely GENIUS. Some great details include the “LADIES!” And in the cast recordings helpless if you listen closely when Eliza say is “Wine and Dine” and can hear Angelica going “Rewind”
A moment of appreciation for the person who edited this video, you didn’t have to make it so clear and perfect from the cuts, little pauses, and fast forwards to the icons indicating clearly when something’s happening in the edit. The video would probably have worked pretty well either way but you went the extra mile to make it look good and really emphasise Andy Blankenbuehler and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s vision for the number and for that i salute you
Thanks!! I just thought some of the pause frames looked weird just freezing so i made them darken to lose the focus, and it felt weird not making it clear that certain things didn't actually line up as perfectly as i made them appear. I already planned to have a rewind/fast forward symbol for the beginning and end so i figured it wouldn't hurt to use it in the rest of the video too. I'm glad you noticed and appreciated it!!
Eliza's in the far left on the screen of Satisfied and Angelica is in the middle of Eliza and Alex so they're in the same place just the angles. But yea it's still cool 😊
they're in the same positions but the lighting in helpless shadows angelica's face, illuminating hamilton and eliza whereas the lighting in satisfied shadows eliza and illuminates that the little interaction hamilton has with angelica before that "hey, hey, hey" was actually significant. it's similar to how in the room where it happens, when it goes from hamilton/burr's perspective to "thomas claims" to madison's idea, the blocking is the same, but the audio interaction is added in for the audience to figure out why madison is pointing out to the far right/left depending on how you see it.
It’s crazy to see both of these side by side so you can really understand how subtle the changes are to portray the exact same scene from two different perspectives. Angelica’s emotion is so strong here that it’s pretty easy to forget that they were at her sisters wedding
One of my favorite pieces in both songs is the scene where Alexander first lays eyes on Angelica and Eliza. In Helpless, Angelica is in between Alexander and Eliza, but isn't blocking their vision of each other - in fact you can draw a line from Alexanders eyes to Eliza's eyes. In Satisfied, they set the scene up again but this time Angelica is standing just far enough forward that she breaks the eyeline and makes it so that Alexander is looking directly at her. It's such a subtle thing that adds so many layers to the scene as Angelica looks at what she could have had.
Yes!!! More people need to realize that the choreography here is thanks to him (even though Lin did write an amazing song, the credit for the visual spectacle of the rewind goes to Andy Blankenbuehler)
after watching the movie (after having spammed the soundtrack countless times over the previous years) i noticed something that i hadn't heard before, which is that in satisfied you can hear the men say "ladies" at the beginning of the song. edit: the times where it can be heard include 1:13, 1:17, and 1:20
What I love about this is that everything here is a replay of what happened EXCEPT for the “if I tell her that I love him she’d be silently resigned he’d be mine” . Here she talks about what could have possibly happened and we see that Eliza never snatches the letters back like she did in helpless but instead sadly walks offstage with peggy. For a brief moment we see the reality that could have been if Angelica took Alexander for herself . Happens around 3:56
OMG THANK YOU FOR POINTING THIS OUT! Whoever is left with the letters is the one who doesn’t walk off with Peggy so they are the center of the show and of Alexander’s life. Wow.
I love Peggy's smile when the men sing "to the Revolution". It gives her a little more character, like she's the one sister that cares about the Revolutionary war.
i knew they used the same choreography but holy shit i didn't realize how perfectly it all matched up,, thank you for making this 🥺️ edit: damn this clout is so tasty edit 2 6/22/24: what's up
David Yang it wouldn’t match if he didn’t do all that stuff, but he/she had to because in Satisfied Angelica there are a lot of parts where she “pauses” in real time, and those times are the AXACT time he/she paused Helpless, so I think he/she did great!
I really love Renee. Her version will always be the best version to me. Just her passion, her pain, her simplicity, her strength. I just love the way she really embodies this character and really tells a story through her actions, her facial expressions, everything. I just love her ❤️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 amazing performance
Yes! It's because it is each of their perceptions of him at that moment. Eliza was focused on him liking her, while Angelica was focused on him wondering/ doubting her. The same way that everyone acts differently in the Room Where It Happens when it's not their turn.
The choreography is amazing but so is the way it was filmed for the movie, particularly at 3:46 where they use different shots so you can see the sister’s own reactions to the same moment when you are in their perspective, very well done 👏👏
Angelica: “I know my sister like I know my own mind you will never find anyone as trusting or as kind” Me: *hits my sister with a brick cause they wore my shoes*
So at the Winter's Ball, everybody was checking out the three sisters but Angelica actually caught Hamilton's eye first? Interesting... he wasn't thinking about Eliza until Angelica introduced them.
I'm assuming when Lin was writing helpless and satisfied he was like making sure that the part "Then I turn to see my sister's face and she is Helpless and I know she is Helpless And her eyes are just Helpless..." He made sure it was the exact same duration as "Then you walked in and my heart went boom Tryna catch your eye from the side of the ballroom Everybody's dancin' and the band's top volume Grind to the rhythm as we wine and dine Grab my sister and whisper 'yo this one's mine" Am I right???
Between Helpless and Satisfied, the differences are you can see how happy Eliza looks in Helpless. While you can see how sad Angelica looks in Satisfied, so it's basically Happy Helpless and Sad Satisfied. And Eliza takes pauses to talk in Helpless while Angelica raps without any pauses.
A friend of mine told me to watch carefully at Laurens, cause he, as well as Angelica is raising the glass and not dancing backwards, this could be interpreted as Laurens having the same feeling as Angelica of throwing away their opportunity with the one they love. And I just FEEL THAT on another level...
Not to rain on your parade, but Lafayette and Mulligan are also frozen at that point of the song, and not “rewinding” so I think it’s just a coincidence. Still cool! I didn’t notice he froze during that part too
@@psychicfriendfredbear1978 yeah, I mean, Laff wanted Angelica, Herc... IDK, Herc maybe wanted Peggy, and the girls are like "I don't care" to them, and my lovely laurens with my stupid and cheater Alex (even that in the musical I shipp harder Jamilton pwp)

I love how he literally just parts the seas when he’s in line with them and effortlessly advances through their ranks thanks to his new status. This bit of choreo took me a few views to notice but now I absolutely agree that it’s one of the best parts!!
Renee's brokenhearted, resigned, devastated emotion at the end part of this song rivals the intensity of what eliza has at the end of who lives who dies. they're both excellent at this.
Honestly when I clicked the video I didn't expect to be that *satisfied*. Jokes aside, that's amazing! It's so overwhelming Hamilton's excellency that you simply can't watch just one time and pick up all those details. Me and my wife still listen it almost everyday, and even my 2 year old loves and sings along (as much as him can).
There’s an interview, I think it’s something like the obc of Hamilton answer Google’s most asked questions. When they were talking about satisfied, both jas and Anthony said the same thing: they learnt how to do helpless on the turntable and then their “brain hurt” when they were told they would have to do it backwards for satisfied. It was so cute, I don’t give it justice lol.
My friend got tickets to this show and he showed me this song because I love listening to talented vocalist. one of my favoriteee parts is in Satisfied when Angelica sings "to your union" and the ensemble goes "to the union" but the boyz go "to the revolution," you can see jasmine (peggy/maria) turn and half-smile at someone standing next to her. it's the tiniest break of character because she's actually smiling at her fiance, anthony ramos (laurens/philip), and it's freaking the cutest thing ever.
@@WeneedmoreGodsinTshirts haha, the original actor who played peggy and maria (jasmine cephas-jones) is engaged to the actor that played laurens and philip (anthony ramos). so i just interpreted it as something little between the two of them!

'You will never find someone as trusting or as kind' Angelica about Eliza. Tbh yeah, Eliza's great (she's my favorite character besides King George), but can we appreciate how selfless Angelica is and how good of a sister she is? She gives a heartfelt speech about only feelings and wishes the best at the marriage of the man she loves and her sister. She could have easily decided to keep Hamilton, but she gave herself heartbreak by sparing Eliza's. Next when she found out about Hamilton's mistress/affair, she took sisterly love's side. Although many people would have done that, it's quite difficult to do what Angelica did at the wedding thank u for coming to my ted talk

Angelica is the best sister in history. She knew Eliza loved Alexander and so she let her have him. She’s so considerate and selfless. Her act of kindness sets a huge example in our every day lives ❤️ PS also Peggy’s dance when Angelica said “I know my sister like I know my own mind” was hilarious 😂
Renée's performance is literally so captivating. I was legit so immersed the first time I watched this, then found myself crying a little a the end despite already hearing this song for like 3 years.

Historically, around this time Angelica already had a husband when she met Hamilton
I liked the sync with "if I told her that I loved him she'd be silently resigned" and "if you really loved me you would share him"

When I heard them say “ladies”in the background I realized they were repeating everything
I noticed it because of Burr, Hamilton, and Laurens and that dance move with all three of them moving like they did when they said "Ladies" before. I honestly didn't hear them say the "ladies" part again. But, I just liked that particular move and so it caught my attention.

Wow the timing where in satisfied she says “if I tell her that I love him” at the EXACT same time I’m helpless she makes the joke about the harem. My mind is blown!
Did you also know that what Angelica says after the harem joke (if you really loved me you would share him) is historically accurate?

Eliza is in love and pain bc hamiltion cheated on her and philip died
Peggy is the vibing master of this musical

Angelica went through all of those emotions all on her own and its crazy how we didn't see it before 'Satisfied' started. Goddammit! This is a MASTERPIECE!!!
It’s a masterpiece indeed!
YES! 😭
"Where are you taking me?"
"I'm about to change your wife"

By all means lead the way.

@@music-cat1030 Yeah! I think it's only in the cast recording, if that helps.

Listen to First Burn. Eliza knew...
OMG
I never noticed that. It’s I N S A N E the effort put into this.
Shell Mcleod this is true. Angelica wrote to Eliza and said that she loved Eliza’s husband 👀

If you notice at 2:40 in "Satisfied", Hamilton is in line with Angelica but in "Helpless" Hamilton is in line with Eliza.
I'd argue they're all standing in the same line, but it's still cool how the perspective plays with how you view the line!
Eliza's in the far left on the screen of Satisfied and Angelica is in the middle of Eliza and Alex so they're in the same place just the angles. But yea it's still cool 😊
They also filmed the movie over 2 days to get All the different angles for the movie
good observation but did you guys notice around this time hercules mulligan ( well the actor ) does the stupidest dance 😂
they're in the same positions but the lighting in helpless shadows angelica's face, illuminating hamilton and eliza whereas the lighting in satisfied shadows eliza and illuminates that the little interaction hamilton has with angelica before that "hey, hey, hey" was actually significant. it's similar to how in the room where it happens, when it goes from hamilton/burr's perspective to "thomas claims" to madison's idea, the blocking is the same, but the audio interaction is added in for the audience to figure out why madison is pointing out to the far right/left depending on how you see it.
It's such a subtle thing that adds so many layers to the scene as Angelica looks at what she could have had.

damn they managed to do the choreography to a completely different song during satisfied imagine how hard it mustve been to keep counting the beats right and not getting confused by satisfied
love how because of how it was filmed, in 'helpless' we get to see elizas face close up after angelica says "I'll leave you to it", showing her excitement
but in 'satisfied', we see angelicas face close up after saying that, really emphasizing her pain of letting alexander go to eliza
Agreed! It definitely showed the multiple POV helpless from Eliza and satisfied from Angelica
4:49 That was the most painful part, especially to her, which is kind of y she sang “To your Union!” that way! Very powerful performance! 💯
And I also like how she singing the words very clear, too.
This comparison shows me how amazing all the Hamilton cast is. They literally just rewind the whole Helpless part all over again. That's amazing..
Renée's performance is literally so captivating. I was legit so immersed the first time I watched this, then found myself crying a little a the end despite already hearing this song for like 3 years.
seeing this in person was already mindblowing but seeing it side-to-side is even more impressive. i think i started to figure out that it was a retelling in satisfied when lin circled around renee with his pointer finger up. such a cool and subtle gesture that made the viewing experience so much more enjoyable.
Satisfied was always one of my favorite performances. The way everything replays and we see scenes in a different point of view always amused me!
One of my favourite things about this song is how satisfied is the last word she says before the rewind. It immediately took her back to that night, reminding her of their first conversation. Everything is so well though of 😭💕
