    I was so sorry when Marcus killed himself to save Ivanova...he might have been my favourite human character. But, it was SO incredibly noble and so 'Marcus' - it was also a perfect ending for him.
    And the scene above where Ivanova cries for her loss/his death...what a wonderfully written and astoundingly acted scene. Claudia Christian was SO perfect in it. It was almost like all the emotion her character could not show on the show up until then was channeled into this one scene. Yet she still did not go too far...just perfect.

      Ivanova had a life that hardened her and closed her from trusting someone.....her father who did not love her coping with the death of his wife from a telepathy-inhibiting drug and the death of her brother which promted him to disapprove of his daughters decision to join Earth Forces. Ivanova's former lover ended up being a xenophobe, Talia as a telepath died as a personality since she was experimented on to serve as an unwitting sleeper agent.
      She handled many years of stress like rebellion against earth. This left her internall vulnerable and she shielded herself against emotions entirely.
      This is very human.....not everybody deals with emotions this way.

      There are two scenes in all of Babylon 5 which appear to be honest and natural and no trace of acting: this one and the one where Ivanova sits Shiva for her father.
      There's many great scenes in the show, but I don't think, from an acting standpoint, anything else in the series comes close to this.
      If I ever get to meet Claudia at a convention, I intend to ask her about this performance, and where she had to go in order to do this.

    Their story, one of loving without expectation, loving sincerely, genuinely, is one of the most powerful expressions of it, I have seen in sci-fi. In the 90's we had a lot of great science fiction, and I fall back to the Deep Space Nine/Babylon 5 era. Their stories were that good. This one, is at the very top of that list. Bravo for all of the players in these scenes, some are not here anymore, but this here is a testament of what love, should be... Without expectation...and unconditional.

    Marcus' body is frozen & in 500 years he is revived & he clones a strand of her hair found on his person. He then downloads the recored and stored memories of Ivanova into the clone and they live happily ever after. It's in a short story written by JMS. • @ladycplum
    @ladycplum 10 лет назад +54

    If the Emmys weren't so snobby towards sci-fi/fantasy shows, I'd say Claudia Christian deserved one for her rather heartbreaking talk with Franklin. And it's funny, at Dragon*Con a few years back, Jason mentioned that he found it odd that he was rushing off to do this for Susan, but why the heck did he have to knock all the guards out?
    JMS has said that he might have kept Jason on the show had he known Claudia wasn't coming back. I ALWAYS wondered why nobody thought to possibly ask as much of the crew as possible to "donate" some of their life to save her, negating having Marcus give up his life entirely. Hmmm....fanfic idea coming up....

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 9 лет назад +12

      +ladycplum I commented on another Babylon 5 video here on RUclips that the Arthurian legends were clearly an influence on several episodes of Babylon 5 (the most obvious, of course, being "A Late Delivery From Avalon"). I think Marcus Cole was another manifestation of this because he embodies many of the characteristics (courage, nobility, intelligence, generosity, etc.) of the quintessential medieval knight all the way up to his chastity, his unrequited love for and faithfulness to Ivanova, and his willingnes to sacrifice his life for hers. The writers even gave him a line in "Late Delivery From Avalon" in which Marcus rather jokingly compares himself to Sir Galahad...but the similarity is actually remarkably apt.

    That's one of the saddest lines ever. ALL love is unrequited. And I've been thinking all this time it was just my bad luck.

    After watching this, please read "Space, Time, and the Incurable Romantic" shot story written by J. Michael Straczynski himself. You will find out that there is happy ending for Marcus and Ivanova after all.

      Yeah. I still consider it non-canon as its too much of "rainbow and unicorns" and reads like a fan-fiction.

      Alexander Benkendorf If somebody else had written it, I would have agreed with you. However, since it was written by J Michael Straczynski himself, and for B5, I don't agree.

    Very sweet. However, the best Interaction, is between Delen and G'gar, over the Minbari Wars. Still makes me cry, as it was an honest response to real life, Babylon 5, way a Grown up Story

    I wish JMS instead of writing a short story set 500years in the future. JMS wrote a story about Ivanva searching for a way to revive Marcus; make that one of Ivanvas life long goals after Marcus is put in Cryostatis

    6:52 - To Think that Claudia was nominated for a Saturn Award for her work on Season 4 of Babylon 5, it sad that this scene of Ivanova and Franklin discussing the death of Marcus, stating that she knew how much he loved her, wasn't enough to help her win... there needs to be a Award Given Just for this moment alone

    This scene and the one with Delenn and G'Kar in Delenn's quarters are the two most sadest scenes in B5. The two actress should have won emmies for those scenes. I miss B5.😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

      Bruce L. Phillis I agree that they should have won emmies for their acting. The dinner scene and the goodbye in the last episode are much sadder though.

    And the brilliance of writing where right in the middle of a heart-wrenching scene they could toss in the humorous line "...at least I should have boffed him just once..." Any less of a writer or actor that would have killed the whole scene.

    A part of me thought Marcus was overdoing it with the machine and he should have set it so that Ivanova would survive and but not completely healed and they would heal her slowly with the machine over time. The setting isn't just instantly death to heal.

    perfect and classic case of unrequited love..but you had the music too loud it's hard to hear Susan talk when she's crying and talking to the Doc
    2022 watching this again...there is no way the "remake" is going to be even a fraction as good as this........oh yeah sure the graphics will be outstanding....the special effects stupendous......but that's all, it will not touch the perfect storm that was this show

    Why was Marcus always so criptic around Ivanova? He should have just come right out and told her how felt. Maybe if she know wouldn't end up sacrificing himself save her.
