Being flown to Spain to stand trial for their crimes must have been a luxurious vacation for these pirates. Being fed at least 3 times a day, medical care, decent living conditions (compared to what they probably had to endure in their homeland), and given clothing. They likely couldn't believe their luck.

I met a relative of Captain Phillips, and he told me that cargo ships traveling the coast of Africa now have armed soldiers aboard. Any pirates who try to take a cargo ship today are at a huge disadvantage, with trained troops shooting down at them.
As a somali I've noticed that the international media fails to cover that some of these "pirates" are just normal fishermen who are mistaken for pirates and then shot at. I've heard a few of these stories. Trigger happy privateers are abroad most of these ships instead of soldiers so you can imagine the abuse of power that is possible. Actually something that once happened that's kind of similar: A group of bankrobbers once tried to rob a bank...as it turned out, the bank in question was the nearest bank to the FBI headquarters...and it was payday.
And for the first few decades The British Empire was almost entirely funded by the proceeds of pirating the Spanish Navy, so they really did learn from the best.

@@TheColonialGamer131 indeed. With good enough coordination those things could wreak havoc and cause serious damage to any warship or even sink them. Look at Millenium challenge 2002. Essentially crippling the force's ability to continue the conflict.
Yes, big warships have to be careful around coasts and islands due to this. Coastal vessels being very cost effective and dangerous to big warships is nothing new. That's why for example, the Finnish defense force navy uses exclusively coastal vessels. They have no desire to go into open ocean. They would much rather navigate their island heavy coast and torpedo/missile down huge Russian destroyers and cruisers.

Sadly this is a problem for any modern navy in peace time. Any unidentified vessel could come in contact with an extremely big warship, even an aircraft carrier (This happened to the french nuclear aircraft carrier Charle de Gaulle in November 2021 for example) because in peace time they aren't allowed to open fire before identifying a real threat. We all stood to and found three fast pirate boats, lit up like New York, attempting to get us in a pincer movement. All we did was squirt some 20mm with tracer in their general direction. @@knobeljoseph11 Hi there. It was in 2009. In those days the pirates used to wander all up the Omani coast as at the time no one was allowed to sink them. Most depressing from our point of view. That same year the Wave Knight was present when a British couple was kidnapped by pirates and we weren't allowed to open fire. Allegedly so we didn't endanger the couple, but in reality we had to get direct permission to open fire from London and permission wasn't given. It wasn't long after that that attitudes changed. In 2011 the RFA Fort Victoria had an open brig built under the flight deck for storing the pirates we captured. They were then transported to Kenya for trial.
At the very beginning of Atalanta Mission some pirates attacked an Indian Destroyer with a RPG7. The grenade left a pencil sized hole in the hull of the warship and a severe dent in the captain's pride. He got the attack answered with a volley from all the ship's cannons. The remains of the pirates nor their vessel were never found.
Just to be exact: a replenishment ship is not a warship, just because it’s belongs to the Navy. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spanish sent this ship with this purpose willingly, as it easily can be mistaken for a cargo ship (which indeed is: an armed cargo ship from the Navy), so it’s a quite good trap.
For all intents and purposes, the Patino is a small freighter. You're correct, it's not a warship, and its large complement of Marines was likely due to protect the ship from such pirates as it really has no offensive weapons. It's mission was likely to support the real warships operating in the area. I think the pirates got off easy, they should have been tried and then hanged.
Even military replenishment ships are considered a war ship they deliver cargo to places while potentiall getting shot at they have men armed to the teeth all with militarty training theres no civillians on board. And it has guns to shoot at lightly armored vehicles and low flying planes it is by att purposes a warship
Pirates aren't that smart at all ,they thought that was a cargo ship but fortunately it was the oposite ,i think it would be alot better to eliminate pirates uproot ,if the navy and marines change the look of their vessels covering all official displays ,i mean to look like a normal cruiser from outside but realy loaded up inside ,no need to deal with more problems any more ,this is just an idea to erradicate those f...n pirates! that doesn't belong here in this world.

It should happen to all pirates. I think every ship that's required to sail in areas known for pirates should have arms enough to fight off an attack like this, or alternately have armed guards to protect the ship.
A ship at sea can pretty much carry anything it wants. The problem is when that ship enters the territorial waters of a country and is thus bound by that country's laws. Most of the "armed contractors" are stationed on so-called "arsenal ships". They meet with the cargo ships in international waters and transfer the armed guards there, then reverse the process just before the cargo ship enters port.
I remember holding an internet conversation with an ex-USMarine who was working as an engineer on a cargo ship. He suddenly apologised and disappeared only to return about half an hour later to relate how he'd had to disuade a group of pirates using an assault rifle kept for that purpose.
I do not think this was a defence. Most people in the comments cannot tell the difference between "They said that this has happened" and "They have defended their actions by this". I am sure that they said their names, and it was not "I am innocent because my name is ...".
There's another from a similar incident some time before. Someone left a companionway down, they made it about halfway up before the watch let loose. It's a long way down from there. Welcome to the Somali Submarine Service.
It has to be pretty surreal feeling of "game over" to be picked up by a military helicopter, then taken to a foreign country, where you are put through trial for piracy, and sentenced to a decade in prison
They'll probably have way more food and a thousand times better living conditions even in jail + if I am not mistaken get to walk on Spanish soil after they've completed their sentence. It's a win-win for them if you think about it.
Back in early 2000s my brother was deployed with the United States Navy and ran into pirates . Of course his ship was a little more armed with a mixture of flak guns and machine guns and shit. But he said 2 groups of pirates mistakes them for a big cargo ship and it was sorta look over the side and just open fire . He said it happened twice .
They did the same kind of mistake against a French Navy replenishment ship 🤣 It was also during night. The French ship saw them coming with radar. They pretended to escape (but not too fast). On the morning the pirates had to face to 40mm gun 😅
Not really the FINAL boss, it was just a replenishment ship after all, those are basically just cargo ships manned by military men. They could have run into the actual warships these one was trying to replenish. So this is like triggering a late game field boss in the early game, but not really the FINAL boss.
It get's even better. These small boats were not alone in the storm for days, they had a mother ship. This Spanish ship looked very muched like the one from their previous *failed attack on the US resupply ship to the nearby US Nimitz class super carrier "USS Carl Vinson"* - which launched 4 sorties and blew the pirates' mother ship out of the water. The pirates attacked the wrong ship but not by mistake, they knew exactly what they were doing - and it went utterly wrong.
“And with a detachment of 180 Spanish marines onboard.” I can only imagine one of the pirates climbing the ladder just to see all of the pissed off marines getting ready to put him 20,000 leagues under the sea.
yes and one thing is that they had 2x20mm and two helicopters, they had passed them, 7 pirates try to take a ship with 180 marines, it's only in movies it goes well 🙀💥☠
That's not the whole story. The pirates knew what they were doing (but it went utterly wrong). They attacked the Spanish warship because it looked like the US warship from a previous failed assault, a US resupply ship to the nearby Nimitz class super carrier "USS Carl Vinson" - which launched 4 sorties and blew the pirates' mother ship out of the water. It was on TV all over the world.
I'm more amazed they only had two 20mms as armament, after the Cole bombing US ships got 240, M2, and Bushmaster mounts put all over the place for defense against small craft. If you're gonna perform counter piracy escorts, command ship or not you should have some extra pintel mounts welded on the deck for machine guns.
Spain and Spanish forces hardly ever get attacked, unlike US forces though. (No I'm not having a dig at the US in any way). The weaponry it had was more than enough. Most commercial shipping passing through those areas hire a small group of private contractors armed with light weapons as protection. And they do the job well enough. The Patino also had a compliment of marines on board. However in a conventional combat zone I would totally agree, but it wouldn't even be there.
"Should we throw these murderers overboard and let the ocean have them?" "No, let's give them food, medical care, and a long-term vacation home back in our own country!" "Brilliant, Commander!"
I'm glad the Rules Of Engagement were clear enough to allow the ship to fire back immediately. Self-defense is the most fundamental human right, including for civilians.
True, but not in Canada. In Canada you can have a firearm for hunting but you are not allowed to use it for personal defense. Go figure, protect yourself and go to prison.
@@5150Magic Yes, and that's a violation of Natural Rights. The right to self-defense is the right to stay alive. No government can legitimately deny that right. Canada rejected the Enlightenment Philosophy of Natural Law as understood by David Hume, Adam Smith, John Locke, Thomas Paine, America's Founders, etc., when the British loyalists from the American colonies fled there. Natural rights were what Thomas Jefferson referred to as "unalienable rights" in the Declaration of Independence. They are rights that we're born with and have as a result of being human. They are not permissions granted or created by government. And it is physically impossible for the police to protect all people at all times. In most places, there is one patrol officer on duty for every several thousand people. On a related note: piracy would be stopped if all people retained their natural right to armed self-defense. Denying that right facilitates and increases piracy, just as denying the right to self-defense increases crime on land by making it safer for criminals. In game theory, this reduces the cost for attackers.
A close friend of mine fought the pirates off that coast for years in the United States Navy. There was very tough fighting and violent boarding with many casualties and injuries. These pirates were treated well it seems. Not so easy considering the damage they cost and the lives they take on a regular basis.

When I got to the part of the description that said there were '180 Spanish marines' onboard I spat out a mouthful of tea and just burst out laughing...well done to the Spanish marines !
I think the reason for the Spanish ship not to fully identify itself was a tactic to get unsuspecting pirates to try to board it thinking it was a civilian ship, to then get them caught in the process which is what happened. Great strategy and action by the Spanish navy.
I mean how do u miss the two 22mm cannons on deck and helicopters when they got close enough to board it? No need for identification! Cargo ships don't have those! Js!
Having served on the USS Kansas City (AOR-3), a US Navy Replenishment Oiler, I find this actually quite amusing. Even more amusing would have been seeing them try to close and board the USS Kansas City...The US Navy and the Spanish Navy appear to have subscribed to different schools of thought when it came to arming an Oiler. We also had two 20mm mounts, but ours were Phalanx CIWS mounts...basically a radar-aimed M61 Vulcan autocannon (6-barrel Gatling gun) firing up to 3000 rounds per minute. We had guns at one time, but they were replaced in the 70's with a RIM-7 Sea Sparrow box launcher capable of carrying (8) 8" missiles with a 19 km range and carrying a 90 pound (41 kg) fragmentation warhead. If the pirates would have gotten close enough, they would have been dealing with 4 M2 .50 caliber machine guns (Ma Deuce ROCKS!) and 2 M60 machine guns....Plus a lot of pissed sailors with M14's and 12-ga shotguns. (Yes, M14. The selective-fire model. 7.62 NATO. They were also used for line-throwing guns, something that the 5.56 NATO blanks just don't have enough charge for.) I'm pretty confident that post-engagement activity wouldn't have been arresting pirates. Perhaps examining rather small wooden splinters which was once a small pirate vessel. For those who are about to point out that a Sea Sparrow missile would not engage a small boat due to the programmed engagement parameters, you would be correct. Sort of. The system could be overridden with manual parameters. Tell it that the calcs are incorrect for the boat's radar signature, and that the boat is actually inbound at 700 knots at an altitude of 2 feet, and it would be happy to engage.
A total waste of an expensive missile when a few clips of ammo from the M14: would have been more than enough to convince them that they had indeed made a bad decision that night.
just putting a few rounds of small caliber into the boat would have been way more fun , one 50 cal into the motor and watch them slowly disappear . cmon its not like they didnt deserve it Croz. The worrying feature of this is surely the ability of a small boat to approach a warship quite undetected in rough seas.
The skiffs used by these criminals are small and the height of the waves actually can hide them from radar and IR, as explained in the vid.

@@TheColonialGamer131 indeed. With good enough coordination those things could wreak havoc and cause serious damage to any warship or even sink them. Look at Millenium challenge 2002. During that wargame BLUFOR initially lost and entire fleet of warships including but not limited to sixteen warships: one aircraft carrier, ten cruisers and five of Blue's six amphibious ships.

Just to be exact: a replenishment ship is not a warship, just because it’s belongs to the Navy.

There's another from a similar incident some time before. Someone left a companionway down, they made it about halfway up before the watch let loose. It's a long way down from there. Welcome to the Somali Submarine Service.
where can i find it ? would love to see it as well!
Happened to a French warship as well .
Ahh, the "You picked the wrong (war)ship, fool!" moment.
😎
It has to be pretty surreal feeling of "game over" to be picked up by a military helicopter, then taken to a foreign country, where you are put through trial for piracy, and sentenced to a decade in prison
Probably luxurious compared to their lives in Somalia
They'll probably have way more food and a thousand times better living conditions even in jail + if I am not mistaken get to walk on Spanish soil after they've completed their sentence. It's a win-win for them if you think about it.
That doesn't feed their families back home though. It's sad that illegal commercial fishing pushed fishermen into piracy. Poor decisions all around.
They'll get released and sent over to the UK on a dinghy
@zegh8578
RE: ". . . where you are put through trial for piracy, and sentenced to a decade in prison"
Didn't they use to execute pirates?
Back in early 2000s my brother was deployed with the United States Navy and ran into pirates . Of course his ship was a little more armed with a mixture of flak guns and machine guns and shit. But he said 2 groups of pirates mistakes them for a big cargo ship and it was sorta look over the side and just open fire . He said it happened twice .
Bull crap
I heard of events like this
Those pirate's where so fucking stupid in the early 2000s
@@silverbloodborne9495 No, they were not stupid, they just had not faced armed ships before.
@@adamabele785 If you attack a navy warship, you’re stupid. It’s not like they didn’t know what guns were, considering they had guns of their own.
They were totally drunk 😂
They did the same kind of mistake against a French Navy replenishment ship 🤣
It was also during night. The French ship saw them coming with radar. They pretended to escape (but not too fast).
On the morning the pirates had to face to 40mm gun 😅
Ha, "but not too fast "
Then the French surrendered

When you accidentially encounter the final boss in a game that you just started
Not really the FINAL boss, it was just a replenishment ship after all, those are basically just cargo ships manned by military men. They could have run into the actual warships these one was trying to replenish. So this is like triggering a late game field boss in the early game, but not really the FINAL boss.
Imagine attacking the huge cargo ship and realising its a huge warship 😂
They must have been terrified... One of their friends even got killed in the process.

I mean... Technically it IS a cargo ship. Just happens to be a military one
A Maritime Darwin Award? Kudos to the Spanish Navy!
The definition of “fucked around and found out.” 😂
Well spoken, Sir!
Davy Jones locker.
@@larsrons7937 That makes them seem more stupid, not less.
Helicopters are a great alternative to this
European Navies are significantly less armed than USN ships on average and their Auxillery/Support ships even more so.
@@ehfoiwehfowjedioheoih4829 not really they take too long to deploy
Spain and Spanish forces hardly ever get attacked, unlike US forces though. (No I'm not having a dig at the US in any way). The weaponry it had was more than enough. Most commercial shipping passing through those areas hire a small group of private contractors armed with light weapons as protection. And they do the job well enough. The Patino also had a compliment of marines on board. However in a conventional combat zone I would totally agree, but it wouldn't even be there.
@@ehfoiwehfowjedioheoih4829 A mounted 4.5in or 30mm's doesnt drink as much kerosene per minute and require a heavily qualified crew.
Beautiful! I like that the sentences were reviewed and EXTENDED!
Unlike in Australia where the sentences are always reduced so that the public have to deal with the problem 🙄
"Should we throw these murderers overboard and let the ocean have them?"
"No, let's give them food, medical care, and a long-term vacation home back in our own country!"
"Brilliant, Commander!"
Pirates: sorry, we thought you were a cargo ship

At least Canaduh doesn't have mass shootings every other day. It's ridiculous. Schools, churches, parades. 8 to 80, anybody can get it in the US.

A close friend of mine fought the pirates off that coast for years in the United States Navy. There was very tough fighting and violent boarding with many casualties and injuries. These pirates were treated well it seems. Not so easy considering the damage they cost and the lives they take on a regular basis.

As you know, any effect (pirates) has a cause (guess who !).
What a waste of time money and resources. The crew on the helicopter should of kept firing until the boat sank and then returned to ship. These people were willing to kill sailors going about their work, Now someone has to pay for their medical treatment, court case and prison.
These 'pirates' come from a community that used to happily survive by fishing the rich seas around them. Other countries from various parts of the world then stripped the seas in that area by factory fishing. There was no other way these people could survive without turning to Piracy. Before you condemn them ask yourself what you would have done in their circumstances.

I think the reason for the Spanish ship not to fully identify itself was a tactic to get unsuspecting pirates to try to board it thinking it was a civilian ship, to then get them caught in the process which is what happened. Great strategy and action by the Spanish navy.
A Spanish person would totally do this.
Disguised as a cargo ship too.. with the loading towers
I mean how do u miss the two 22mm cannons on deck and helicopters when they got close enough to board it? No need for identification! Cargo ships don't have those! Js!
@@tiffanycayce8701 good one..lol
7.62 NATO. They were also used for line-throwing guns, something that the 5.56 NATO blanks just don't have enough charge for.)
I'm pretty confident that post-engagement activity wouldn't have been arresting pirates.
How does a radar cannon aim when there is no radar signal?
just putting a few rounds of small caliber into the boat would have been way more fun , one 50 cal into the motor and watch them slowly disappear . cmon its not like they didnt deserve it Croz. Word gets out real quick back home that Mo and the fellas never came home and their next boarding party might think twice......cool facts
@@Brommear The CIWS is designed to engage small boats as well as low flying aircraft. It has a targeting radar specifically for the job. When they say the boat had no radar return they likely meant the ships main surface search radar
@@trident6547 The missile has a shelf life anyway. Might as well use it.

I confess I laughed when, after further review, the Spanish courts extended the sentences for the pirates! Totally unexpected!!!
In the UK or US they would have reduced or commuted the sentences for humanitarian reasons.
@@cvn6555
The human thing is to throw them in prison for life.
Take their weapons and belongings and put them back ashore would be a far worse punishment.
They are criminals because its objectively the best choice, even if it leads to getting shot. Being put away in a European prison is a lottery win.
In the US and UK the pirates would be promoted to captain of a war ship for their bravery of attacking a war ship. hahaha
Cool, the Spanish actually understand how to curtail criminals.
