When Pirates Attacked 2 American Warships | March 2006

  • In March 2006, the USS Gonzalez and the USS Cape St George were conducting a board and search operation on a suspicious vessel in the Indian Ocean. As two American boarding teams approached the craft, small arms fire began to be received from pirates stationed on the vessel, forcing the boarding teams to disengage and return to the safety of the warships; however, the unexpected then happened, as the pirates switched their fire onto the two warships themselves, marking the first time in the 21st Century that a US Navy ship had come under fire from an enemy vessel.

I am super proud to announce the release of an eBook project I have been working on over the past few months!
This book is part one of a series that will cover the histories of every Division that was active in the British Army from September 1939 - January 1947. Part one covers the Armoured & Cavalry Divisions.
The histories in the book cover a Divisions full story, from its formation to disbandment, and everything in between, including movements, actions, planned moves, key dates, commanders etc. Also included is a full outline of a Divisions movement in the U.K. and in the post-war period, two topics that are often overlooked in the historiography of the British Army. For some of the Divisions, such as the 9th Armoured, 10th Armoured and the 1st Cavalry, this is the first time in over 80 years that their war chronicle is told in full.
If you are interested and would like to purchase a copy of the book, be sure to check out the link below:

The pirates did not "attack" in the true sense of the word. Gonzalez and CSG maneuvered in the early morning hours to quietly approach just at sunrise, placing themselves exactly between the dhow and the low rising sun. On the open sea, the pirates literally did not see the two huge warships until they were several (a few several) hundred yards away. No more than a half mile, I think. They were taken off guard and taken by complete surprise. Their kneejerk response was to lash out, stupidly. The steely group in tattered rags were certainly not used to not being in charge of their seafaring environment, a place where they had created havoc for quite some time. // The pirates were "jailed" on the starboard side main deck of CSG. There was no other place on a warship to put them. They slept on the nonskid in the heat -- brutal. Several had bad venereal disease, All showed no emotion, but rather, a complete emptiness in their eyes and vacant inaction. Each truly cared not whether they lived or died.
