I love the Neumann. I used to work with the U87 which had interchangeable patterns . I used it in the figure 8 pattern to record two voices on either side of a table . Cardiod pattern for working on a boom in drama and it worked so good in the music studio for vocals . They were also good used as a high pair over a drum kit or overheads for a choir . The omni setting was great for capturing wild tracks , atmos tracks and sometimes in the middle for an acoustic ensemble. They did a smaller version which was the U89 but I think it was just a cardiod possibly hyper cardiod . Still a good mic Yup I’ll keep saving .

Of all of these mics, the NT1 is the purchase for me. The money spent is well worth it, and the upgrade to anything beyond that, doesn't really pay off for me personally and the sound I make. The Noise floor is amazing and I get the cleanest and flattest sound from the Rode.
@@cosworthTV you might wanna check out your preamp then. Cuz I’ve been working on NT1A for the better part of a decade. Never had any noise issues at all.

The Lewitt sounded really good for his voice. Probably should keep in mind that for these sound tests, it's not only about the quality but the feel for the project and the vocalist's timbre.
For those of you getting an SM7B, make sure you get BRAND NEW low noise cables. Trust me it’ll save you from that annoying noise, and also sing with the pop filter off so you get more air. Trust me I’ve worked with this mic for months and was able to get it to sound better by doing that. And make sure you cut the lows a bit before doing compression because that’ll muddy up some of the higher air. Then your mic should sound sweet.

For anyone unsure on which one to buy: if you have the money, invest in the TLM 102. I've had it for a year now and I couldn't be happier. It records everything perfectly, it's tiny so it's easy to transport, the audio files you get with this mic are so crisp and pure they're ridiculously easy to EQ/mix and way out of league from the other mics, SM7B included. And, also, if you find it secondhand like I did, you can save like 100 bucks on it, and it's so well made it's not gonna make any difference. You will literally get a 1000 buck mic for 500€-700$, it's ridiculous how good it is.
TLM 102 wins, no contest. The Lewitt held its own in the singing test. Surprisingly the AT2020 had too much presence, and the SM7B in comparison didn’t have enough air. Neumann has the best response, and would need the least amount of EQ.
Above 100 pounds budget, microphones are quite similar in sound quality, no all listeners can find the difference . EQ can do the magic. Perfect video thanks.

@@GXprogamer the nt1 has a deeper clearer sound, while the nt1a is airy and somewhat high pitched, also kind os nasaly, which is why men usually use the nt1, and women use the nt1a. You should especially get the nt1 if you have a high pitched voice because nt1a will make your voice super high pitched and sound pretty bad.

I own the SM-7B and its a Low Gain Mic, it really need the Cloudlifter, thats why it picks up background noise, since you have to push the gain. I like the NT1-A and the Lewitt 440...
Neuman and lewit is the best choice for vocals trust me there is a lot of similarities between the two if u don’t have the money for a neuman just try out the Lewit it really has the range and clarity you would be looking for I have tried all other mics there good but when I try to go to the next level with my vocal they don’t handle it as well as the two I mentioned.....these are facts
I was wondering how good the Lewitt was? I had the Tlm102 and honestly loved it I looked at the specs for the Lewitt 440 and noticed it’s specs match the tlm103. Thanks for this comment you may have convinced me to get one
hey appreciate the info. can i ask what is your vocal range? are you baritone, bass, tenor. tenor baritone or what? thanks :) im very middle of the pack baritone, slightly more tenor leaning, and idk if brightness from LCT would be better than a warmer mic
@ Edward Smith What I'm most impressed by is that INTRO! Omg the contrast between that heavily processed intro vocals over a piano, that CLEVER transition, to the SUPER satisfying clear deep vocals. Nice!
I think th SM7B is the best one for your voice. It gives some slight added density and support on the low end. The Lewitt and the NT1A are good either.
It had some noise though. I think the AT2020 is the best cheap one for him, but the Neumann is better. AT2035 is the best budget mic. AT4040 is even better.
Are you deaf if you think so? Or you overdone reading the marketing in gear forums? How can a shitty microphone with boomy low mids be better than a high quality condenser?
@@marin4311 Now go and listen to this comparison again. Do you really subjectively think that SM7B sounds the best here? Or maybe it’s the marketing that told you that this microphone is the best?
@@TechbugProduction The 103 has a little bump in the higher frequency range which is supposed to help "lift" the vocals out of the mix a bit. I think the 102 is flatter overall.
*subbed* much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 thank you for everything! I currently have the rode NT1a and I have my eyes on the Tlm 103, so grateful that you have included all these options! I love singing covers of R&B songs and pop songs and I can’t wait to learn more
Damn that at2020 actually sounded good on your voice, I had the mic when I first started my studio too and while it was a decent mic for the price I always had to do a lot in the mix to make it work and still never sounded amazing.
@@soulmate1730 haha yeah that was my struggle with that mic too and then I bought a few other mics around the same price and kinda had the same problem. I will say when I started I wasn’t that good at mixing so that was a issue in itself but those cheap mics definitely don’t help. A lot of times their too thin, or have a tin sound or honky sound or way to bright and sibilant. I will say when I got a mic around the $500 price range and up all those problems with trying to get the vocal to sit in the mix went away. There’s a few good ones over $300 now a days that will work but almost everything below that comes with issues and if your new to mixing that is just a headache alone that I think will destroy your mixes lol. I mean now I can get mixes with those mics and make it work pretty well but it’s just more work and it will still never sound as good as a good mic. I think a good mic is the first source of quality when it comes to recording that will make or break your recording, if your recording into shit quality no matter how much you try to make it look Beautiful it’s still shit quality at the end of the day.
@@heathersky8218 what’s your budget? Because if you ask me the tlm103 is the best for the price it makes it so easy to sit in the mix and sounds so good, but not everyone can afford that 1.
Great video! :) I was totally in for the SM7b, however, I read so much that it produces so much noise because of the preamp that needs to be put in front of the chain. I think the Neumann sounded amazing and is comparable to the SM7b.
Good work man! I use the Sm7b quite a bit myself, it’s great for recording guitar and vocals, I found it really shines with high SPL stuff like cranked guitar amps, and rock vocals!
SM7B might not sound the best here on its own. But I found it responds very well to eq unlike many other mics. So if you need to add low or high end it works good for that.
Add low end to SM7B? Are you crazy? It’s already boomy and boxy as hell there. The microphone at the 400 dollar range should not respond well to eq, it should already sound good without necessity to use eq. Why should one justify the shittiness and unclarity of the boomy low mids that you should always eq out from SM7B whatever voice you record?
@@sevchyk well, in general you will need an eq to fit the vocal into your mix, depending on the sound of other instruments and effects you use. Also even if the 400 or more expensive mic might sound good on its own it might not suit your voice. Take sm7b again. It has not much bass and even less highs if you compare it with other mics, it has a slight bump in the upper mids which make up for that but in it is a mid heavy mic. That means if you have a nasal voice, your vocal probably not gonna sound well with this mic, or you will need to work with eq a bit. And from experience I know that sm7b responds very well when you shape the sound with eq, without amplifying unwanted frequencies or sounding unpleasant.
@@nikolayew "It has not much bass and even less highs..." Man, wash your ears, really. Set the setting to flat and try to sing anything in E3-H3 range, just any melody there. You'll hear nothing but a thick boomy mud, consonants and transients choked instead of clear notes, turning into muffled woo-woo boxiness so that it needs 5 decibels wide bell in that area and high-pass at 100 hz to actually be not awful to listen to, and even then the clarity will hardly be reached. Look at any video with a professional producer on youtube, they always use stacks of equalizers, the first one is usually intended to make SM7B not sound like SM7B. The problem frequencies of this microphone are always as follows: 120-140 hz, 240-290 hz, 490 - 500 Hz and that hissy whistly tone somewhere at 4300 Hz. This microphone ALWAYS has problems there, no matter how treated the room is or who is using it. Now take Rode Classic II or Neumann u87. That is the sound out of the box, minimum equalization, it sounds decent and acceptable without eq moves at all. My point is that the tone of the microphone should be likable and usable instantly with minimum interventions. Why should 400 dollar microphone sound like wooly shit, completely unusable without EQ? The microphone should capture good sound from the source instead of relying on someone who is forced to make ten eq moves only to make it sound like it should, isn't it?
@@sevchyk I say it again for you. Not every fu****ng instrument or voice sounds the same. I recorded female vocals, bass, guitar and bass drum on the sm7b, its everything but not muddy, at least in my settings. If it sounds muddy for your vocals then its your vocals, then this mic is just isn't for you. I like the fact i can boost the highs on this thing in post without making the sound too harsh. This way I adjust the sound TO THE MIX. It certainly won't suit every mix and every vocal. But same for every mic regardless of its price .
@@nikolayew Did you try to sing specifically within the range that I mentioned? And you say now that it’s not muddy there? You’re chatterbox and lier, not telling the truth. Because mud is always there. And it is confirmed by many people. I tried the female vocals as well. The same thing. In the 120-280 hz, it hums on consonants adding artificial amplified bass that muddens the transients. Good microphone should capture every voice well. When the first thing one needs everytime is to cut out the low mids, that means that the microphone is shitty and boxy. No need to do it with good microphones and I already mentioned the examples for you. I think, even sm57 sounds more clear and less boxy than SM7B. I think, you are a victim of marketing, thinking that this is an “awesome microphone, but I need cloudlifter”, like all those assholes on the gearslutz forum. The truth is the fact that no major recording engineer praised this microphone and said anything good about it, and it is not used frequently by professionals in studios. They use different microphones. To put it short, your initial comment is bullshit. Tell anybody who has SM7B that you’re going to boost the low frequencies in EQ with this microphone, and they will look at you as an idiot…
Thank's for the comparison! Wow I didn't know how bad the AT2020 was. It sound's absolutely trash. Been thinking about getting the Lewitt since it sounds very much like the TLM 102. The SM7b sounds like most dynamic microphones. Too much bass and too little detail, not crisp or detailed at all. Again, thank you! Great singing!
Just got a Lewitt 240 pro and I Love it! Used it to record classical guitar, harsh metal, and clean vocals, its great for all of them, I suppose the LCT 440 is only much better.

@@refugioflores2226 if you have 1000, you can’t go wrong with the tlm 103. The 102 is also a very good mic but it need more Gian because it has a smaller capsule, so it Picks up more room noise. If you record in a very quite space i think that also the 102 will be an awsome choice

A SM-57 with the foam sounds a lot like a sm7-B. A bit grittier in the high end, but a really good option for a smaller budget. I just bought a SM7B a couple months back, and honestly i can tell the difference between the 7B and the 58 when the vocal sits in the mix. That beiing said, the NT1A absolutely slaps for the price. But If you have a bad room like most home studios you should get a dynamic cardiod mic instead as it will discriminate more of the room and give you a dryer recording.
I absolutely love the smooth sound of the Neumann. Definitely got me wanting to purchase this. And if I do, I will use your link so you get some compensation for it. Thank you for this video!!!
Yea, also keep in mind the more quality the mic has/ how it's designed for a very specific use definitely changes the required hardware and setup time to get the mic running really properly. Any weak link in your setup is gonna effect high end products performance more so than a cheap muddy mic
Thanks for your comparison between mikes. You helped me make my decision. I’m a singer and I like the sound of the Rode mic. I can’t afford the Shure or the N one, but I think the Rode NT1-A will be great. The Lewitt LCT 400 might be good for female voices, but you didn’t mention the price so I’m going to check that one out, too. Thanks again. Very helpful! Nice song, too.

@@GXprogamer get the rode nt1, it is much better fore male voices, and just better overall, for only a slight price increase.
@@lucas13577 oh whats the diff between the nt1a and the nt1?
@@GXprogamer the nt1 has a deeper clearer sound, while the nt1a is airy and somewhat high pitched, also kind os nasaly, which is why men usually use the nt1, and women use the nt1a. You should especially get the nt1 if you have a high pitched voice because nt1a will make your voice super high pitched and sound pretty bad.
@@GXprogamer if you have a very deep and bassy voice then then the nt1a may fit you better though.
Did you use a cloud lifter in the singing test with the Shure SM7B? There seemed to be noticeable hissing in the background. (3:12) Loved the video!
I did use a cloudlifter... I think there might be an issue with my SM7B its self 🙄
@@EdwardSmithMusic all recordings with SM7B have the same issue. 3:34 3:50 4:06
@@EdwardSmithMusic SM7B owner. yeah, that's definitely not normal for an SM7B. i get that it requires more power than your average mic, but that's wayy too much white noise coming from it compared to the others.
Ive always recorded with the rode NT1-A, if your curious bout the quality just take a listen to the songs I’ve recorded ;) ! Great vid
So true!! I use it all the time!!
The LEWITT LCT 440 Pure was the best sounding hands down.
It does sound great for the price 🙌🏻
Can we just appreciate it how Edward❤️ gives detailed info for every comparison vid!! Road to 100k!!!!!🥳🥳
Thank you so for this comment Vincent!! I really appreciate the support 🙏🏼
I own the SM-7B and its a Low Gain Mic, it really need the Cloudlifter, thats why it picks up background noise, since you have to push the gain. I like the NT1-A and the Lewitt 440...
I didn't stop here for the mic details, it was helpful but, I stopped for your voice, really nice vocal brother. Keep it up homie
Thank you so much!! Will do 🙏🏻
I like that Lewitt. Never heard of them but the price is fantastic for a vocal mic with presence.
Great points!!
I love NT1 black. It's much flatter and quiet 🔥
Thank you for making this bro. I've been trying to get a studio mic.
Thank you for watching!!
LEWITT LCT 440 sounds best for his voice in singing for sure.
??? get some studio headphones you cleary hear 1. TLM 102, 2. Nt1a, Lewitt, Shure, Audio Technica
Def the lewitt sounded better..
@ Edward Smith
What I'm most impressed by is that INTRO! Omg the contrast between that heavily processed intro vocals over a piano, that CLEVER transition, to the SUPER satisfying clear deep vocals. Nice!
Wow, thanks!
I was not expecting your vocals to hit like that
Aside from the great video u had perfect vocals to match
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼
Wasn’t expecting my home accent. But I’m very happy to hear it!
I think th SM7B is the best one for your voice. It gives some slight added density and support on the low end. The Lewitt and the NT1A are good either.
Thanks for sharing!
@@sevchyk It's very subjective, after all.
@@marin4311 Now go and listen to this comparison again. Do you really subjectively think that SM7B sounds the best here? Or maybe it’s the marketing that told you that this microphone is the best?

Even though it is small I can hear the difference with a Neumann.... and I think that small difference sounds amazing.
I totally agree!!!
I love m 102. It showed up on Amazon prime with the option for 5 monthly payments...I jumped on that faster than a chicken on a grubworm.
@@hamburgerhelpersalisburyst1507 i thought that 102 is more for instruments and 103 more for vocal

Brilliant video. The comparisons are so helpful. The sm7b seems to have the biggest difference.
Glad it was helpful!
Was it just me or was it sounding kind of fuzzy?
@@SeanBlackBaby Low mids boominess, man…
Wow, they are all amazing microphones but sadly I can't afford one of them..I really love singing and recording.. Thank you for sharing
Damn that at2020 actually sounded good on your voice, I had the mic when I first started my studio too and while it was a decent mic for the price I always had to do a lot in the mix to make it work and still never sounded amazing.
I have it too and it is really good for the price but sometimes i dont know if im just really really bad at mixing vocals or if i just need a new mic
I think a good mic is the first source of quality when it comes to recording that will make or break your recording, if your recording into shit quality no matter how much you try to make it look
Beautiful it’s still shit quality at the end of the day.
Do u have any mic recommend for the person who is really not good at mixing pls?
@@heathersky8218 what’s your budget? Because if you ask me the tlm103 is the best for the price it makes it so easy to sit in the mix and sounds so good, but not everyone can afford that 1.
@@michaelrice6620 haha I really don’t think I can afford that. The max i can afford would be 200$ ;( but less would be great haha

Great video! :) I was totally in for the SM7b, however, I read so much that it produces so much noise because of the preamp that needs to be put in front of the chain. I think the Neumann sounded amazing and is comparable to the SM7b.
Eat the world, I felt that LMAO. Jk you have an absolutely beautiful singing voice. Damn gummies, you hear things lmaooooo.
Good work man! I use the Sm7b quite a bit myself, it’s great for recording guitar and vocals, I found it really shines with high SPL stuff like cranked guitar amps, and rock vocals!
That intro deserves an Oscar
Haha thank you so much!!
Luit sounded amazin too. I have an NT1 and a SM7B with a cloudlifter will look into them.

Thank you so much!! It's called "If the world was ending"
The shure smb7 has this weird hiss when you're recording through it. Nice vid thanks
102 is raw and straight to heart the others are filtered and wishing for the best
Best INEXPENSIVE vocal microphones in 2021 should be the title.

Thank's for the comparison! Wow I didn't know how bad the AT2020 was. It sound's absolutely trash. Been thinking about getting the Lewitt since it sounds very much like the TLM 102.
Do you eq out the boomy low mids a lot on the SM7B because of excessive mud there every time you record?
I absolutely love the smooth sound of the Neumann. Definitely got me wanting to purchase this. And if I do, I will use your link so you get some compensation for it. Thank you for this video!!!
The Shure actually had noise on it. Weird. Rode sounded best for value IMO
Yea, also keep in mind the more quality the mic has/ how it's designed for a very specific use definitely changes the required hardware and setup time to get the mic running really properly. Any weak link in your setup is gonna effect high end products performance more so than a cheap muddy mic
