  • Do Back Stretchers Work For Back Pain? Stretcher Comparison & Demonstration
    When people think of stretching the back it is common that they think of one thing, stretching the muscles of the back, often an activity that makes underlying causes of back pain worse! Back stretchers on the other hand offer a modality that can unload the spine itself, as well as take pressure and tension off the muscles of the lower back, when used correctly. If however you do not use these devices in the correct location or use them incorrectly they could well make your back pain worse.
    Luckily, we’ve got you covered in the video above. We take you through a variety of back stretchers, from the simplest option for all of us, the towel, all the way through to a mechanised lumbar traction device as well as the remodelling device known as a Denneroll.

    All the DRs I went to prescribed the cobra position. All the books I read also suggested the cobra position. This made my back and sciatic worse. It wasnt until I went through the back in shape program I finally got relief and made progress healing my back. The towell stretch and the program was a lifesaver for me. Thank you for this video and creating a great program.

    Came across your video by chance. A brilliant talk and very helpful advice on proper use, thank you. I now use a back stretcher (Slumbar, which I think you demonstrate) after years of lower back issues and find it greatly helps, that lower arching stretch being what I somehow missed out on! I wonder if you've come across the Oov, a piece of Pilates equipment. I was introduced to it, for exactly what you're talking about here, during lower back injury rehab. It was fantastic. Quite expensive and currently difficult to get in the UK. Do you have a video on it?? Thanks again.

      It's a pleasure, glad you liked it - that thing does look interesting, we'll have to get hold of it and do a review - on the surface of it I'm not too sure but it definitely looks like something worth looking at in a bit more detail :) thanks for the comment and suggestion :)

    Thank you so much. I found your video when l googled herniated disc. Your podcast was very informative. All the exercises my physiotherapist made me do, you said not to do. My back was only getting worse and now l found this and you totally make sense. I've been told that l might need surgery which l will not do. I need to heal myself. Thank you so much 🙏 A new subscriber 😊😊😊

    Greetings from Oregon. You advise against dismounting from a stretch by lifting up your bum....but that is essentially what a glute bridge exercise is.... Are glute bridges something we should avoid? Thanks!

      Hello :) thanks for the comment, its more about after doing this specific exercise, we do recommend marching bridges, but just after you've used these - don't do them :)

    Hi for the denneroll, which one is it? I'm confused with the selections. Is it the thoracic denneroll or the cervical denneroll? There's also the thoracic scolliroll and lumbar scolliroll. It looks promising as towels and back stretchers don't have enough curve for me. I've been rolling my sore spots on the sides of the gym bench which isn't convenient, looking for an at home option

    Great informative and engaging video. However, I am unsure how to position an Acemed stretcher, where would I have the higher end? Thanks.

    • @BackInShapeProgram
      @BackInShapeProgram  9 месяцев назад

      thanks for the comment, We need to review one of those soon, yes the higher end goes to the bottom and the "tail" goes to the head. this would emulate the natural lordosis in your lumbar spine and is a basic version like the denneroll in this video :)

    Thank you for your video. I found it very helpful. I've been getting sciatica pain for over a year now and was told it's my lower vertebrates the cushions are flat. I've had a spinal injection a few weeks ago but it's just a little bit better. I've got stretching exercises off the physio but sometimes it just aggravates the problem.
    I'm pretty fit as a 59 year old bar this now problem.
    Will the towel work for me.
    Thanks for your time.
    John Hunter.

      Hi john, with these sorts of issues flattening and the standard knee tucks make little sense when we step back and evaluate, the towel makes sense on the contrary and would be helpful but it's important to define "work for me"
      It's probably the best daily stretch most people can do for back health but it must be done with proper rehab alongside - definitely check out the program on the website for more info as well as the long masterclass video on the homepage of our RUclips Channel :)

      Thank you for the reply. I was given six exercises to do. Three involve twisting and three bending and stretching. I get the stretching, but the twisting is hard to imagine how it helps.
      Anyway I will check out the program on your website.
      Thank you.

    The back stretcher you linked is out of stock online in UK. I'm a bit sceptical of buying just any stretcher. Is there any others you could suggest please? I have fairly mild sciatica but experience those almost electric type shocks once or twice a week and would like to give this method a try. Thank you for sharing this video

    • @BackInShapeProgram

      Really your best bet would be to begin working to strengthen and make use of the towel stretch in the beginning. These stretchers are not fixes for an injury in the lower back - but they can be helpful tools along the way.

    Hi, nice explanation!
    Could I ask two things.
    I used the link for the Neck Cloud a couple of weeks ago. I'm finding that even though I'm really really getting the Neck Cloud to fit as close as humanly possible- my head is way off the ground! About 4 CM off the ground. I dont think I'm doind something wrong, as I have it all the way in. Perhaps I'm physically different than you and the one you had in the video, is the Neck Cloud available in more than one size? Perhaps that's it. I noticed there's a *dark blue one and a light blue one* .
    I got the light blue like you have. I can't see that there's a difference between the two colours on the Amazon site.
    Separately, I wondered if it is okay to do the Scoliosis exercise where you put a towel behind your neck and also your lower back with arms folded- is that okay to do with the Neck Cloud in place of a towel for the Neck but keeping the lower back towel?
    P.S I wish I could find a foam cylinder or something in place of the lower back towel. Easier. I'm feeling like Inspector Gadget. I might get that back stretcher you have there but I'm wondering if I can do the Scoliosis exercise with these gadgets or if I should just stick to towels.

      As far as we know they're all the same device. it's very common that those with neck issues do not "conform" to the shape to begin with and experience the floating head like you describe :) i do think the neck cloud is pretty good, but the back stretchers aren't as good for the back as the neck cloud is for the neck - in my experience - we don't sell the neck cloud or anything - it's just a good device lol!

    Great video! Would it be harmful to sleep the whole night on a orthopedic stretcher? For a person with a small l5 s1 protrusion

    • @BackInShapeProgram
      @BackInShapeProgram  Год назад +1

      It's not something we would particularly recommend, the chances of vulnerability in the night rolling over or when you wake up would be high. You're best bet is to work on the waking hours and doing things right there first - rehab wise etc.

    Important point , these all help, BUT repair and then Strengthen the area . The Denneroll look interesting as a maintenance tool. Would you need to get "measured" for one?

    • @BackInShapeProgram
      @BackInShapeProgram  Год назад

      You just need X-rays to know how to use it responsibly (in our opinion) - that being said, in certain cases of more complex spine alignments sometimes we find it's best to focus on the less powerful options.
