    Talking of the pain level, you said on a scale of 0-10 it's a 15, that's exactly what I have been experiencing for 5 - 10 seconds at random times when I just happen move in such a way to set off an episode for the past 3 days. I couldn't even get into the car yesterday to visit the doctor! No problem sleeping which really surprised me. I've got 10 days to get better or I won't be going on holiday. All because I moved the vacuum cleaner to the side to get to the front door..... unbelievable! Thanks for posting.

    So I found the exercise was good to do in a really hot bath and then also found that before I found this because I was compensating with my walking I actually started to make it worse in other places from shifting my weight, so keeping normal posture really helped even if it hurt like heck...

      Very normal! Pain recurs and gets worse every time because muscles that support you get shut off. Then they don’t turn back on again until you tell them to! This happens to me once or twice a year. Interestingly, after I stopped doing yoga, it hasn't happened. So I think because I have poor lower back mobility, the yoga was irritating my nerves. Anyway, when my back goes out, I've tried doing nothing and also tried doing my regular yoga/Pilates/ weight training. It doesn't seem to make much difference. The pain is also much worse when lifting anything. I feel almost zero back pain when sitting or laying down. Tentatively took a few steps and I'm able to walk but cautiously. Such a terrifying experience.. In think I'm hopefully on the mend. My GP had a good insight in to back pain as he had surgery on both discs. I'm 43...and he suggested giving up running and weight lifting...suggesting that the wear and tear on my back has made it too vulnerable to injury. He suggested swimming, cycling, walking and yoga/pilates. What do you think? I'm thinking I will go with his advice as this experience has been terrifying. Thank you for your great videos...got me through a tough time while bed bound 👍

      @robdrenningpt  10 месяцев назад +2

      Those activities suggested by your GP are great! And glad you’re feeling better!
      I’ve been there myself, it IS scary. Avoiding running/lifting for now is a good idea. It allows time for full healing and regaining mobility.
      However, in the long term I don’t really agree. There’s research out there showing repeated disc loading (aka running) actually INCREASES disc strength! More of wear and repair vs tear! It takes a while to gradually get back into it, but I run now and encourage my patients to do the same. If you do the activities your GP suggested with gradual return to strength/loading…you should be able to run too!

    • @mic8026
      @mic8026 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your reply.... really appreciate it. That sounds like a good idea. Great advice!
    Before my back muscle sprain, I lifted something heavy, but I was fine. Then I went into the living room, made a twist to pick up a remote control and then, BAM! It felt like I was stabbed behind my rip cage and I collapsed on top of my chair. I couldn't get up, walk or anything for a day. I kept irritating the sprain that day by accident, and it was an unspeakable pain, it was like a knife in my back, and someone twisting the knife violently if I moved an inch
    After 48 hours I was able to walk to the hospital, and found out it wasn't a tear, thank god! The doctor said it was a muscle spasm, another word for sprain. One week I can walk, and do low level weight training.
    What do you think caused it, the heavy weight or the twist?

I immediately could not move, bend, walk or do anything that moves my discs or else the stabbing sharp pain would spark again. Im currently waiting in the ER. What causes this? I'm young, very mobile and recently threw my back out and it was the scariest 48 hours of my life. I couldn't stand or sit. Just by getting into a sedan car and then, crack! Felt a full lower back strain. What gives?

    • @robdrenningpt
      @robdrenningpt  11 месяцев назад +5

      Great question! There are several possibilities. The most common is what’s called the facet joints in your back. They’re supposed to slide back and forth. Sometimes they stop doing this and jam together instead. There are little nerves in there that then cause the sharp, ice-pick type of pain. Then your brain tightens up all the muscles around, and any slight movement becomes very painful!
      Yes very scary! Happened to me too. Does that make sense?

    Yeah
    This happens to me like once a year and it’s traumatic for several reasons:
    I don’t want back surgery, which I see as 6 on one side and a half a dozen on the other regarding effectiveness
    My family is used to me being productive and basically isn’t sympathetic
    Basically not having this happen is WAY up in my self reliant list of priorities
    So I appreciate this video as it feels true to my conditions for pain and recuperation, etc..
    I’m nearly 60 but this has been a thing for decades if I think about it!
    The first time it happened my mind said,
    “I think I tore a muscle and somehow I need to stretch and relax these areas of tension as a preventative “
    However, almost all people jump to the
    “Oh yeah, back surgery”
    Line of conversation…
    I had a torn knee that is now ok (touch wood) and everyone was telling me to get surgery then
    I had a torn Achilles, same story
    I’m hoping to sort of fix this
    This time around my recuperation seems quicker, and I suspect it’s because of certain exercises that stretch out and strengthen those areas.
    Anyway, I’m calling myself Lazarus lately, but this is my new channel ❤️

      Some people have 2-3 days where moving is very tough, some less than that. Getting out of bed in the am will be the hardest thing. If you can do that, work should be doable, depending on what type of job you have. I did it once and then had to move an entire apartment the next day. I used an ACE wrap as a brace and was able to get it done. You could try that if you have a physical job. If you sit a lot, keep support behind your back and move/walk around as much as you can. But most likely there will be some limitations to your day tomorrow. Let me know how it goes!

The pain is not a sign that something is being damaged. BUT…getting into a position that’s pain free is also good. Simply because it hurts less, which means improved mobility etc. Think of it as it’s OK to push to pain, but not through. Kind of grey I know but hopefully that makes sense! Lmk if not

      @@robdrenningpt Thank you so much for replying back! And I look forward to the exercise. I have only been able to sleep in my recliner because getting up from my bed in the morning caused the pain to briefly appear when I tried to sit up from a lying position. So frustrating! All this sitting caused my ankles to swell. Sorry I'm rambling. LOL Thank you again!!

    Good to hear from you Coach.
    I have pain in my back a bit in the right side of the waist especially when I bend down to pick something, and when am driving is even worse
    I like to do exercises, like running, jumping some push ups,
    My question is should I stop exercises?
    Thanks

      Hey! No, don’t stop exercising unless those things specifically hurt you worse, otherwise they’re not harmful. Generally speaking try these things:
      1. Prone press ups in comfortable range (on stomach, press your chest up to arch your back…you don’t have to straighten your arms all the way). 15 reps 3x/day including before bed
      2. Avoid sleeping in the fetal position. Bring the knees down if you’re a side sleeper
      3. Car. Lean the seat back as far as you can and still reach the wheel. Sit on a pillow to be taller and smaller pillow behind the back
      4. Last, try the video below. It’s what I do for my back issues.
      Hope that helps!!

      Thanks so much for super and quick response.
      Am gonna work daily on the tips given and I will get back to you with positive changes I believe.
      Do you have any exercises that you would not recommend so as not to hurt my back!!!
      A lot of appreciations from East Africa Tanzania 🇹🇿.

      Nothing in particular to avoid. Even things like dead lifts are great if done properly! Just don’t do anything that hurts!
