I bought a color variant of this watch just before the pandemic to use while on motorcycle trips or hikes. Didn't get much use until lockdowns were lifted, but when I actually had an opportunity to use it I actually really liked it. The worst thing about this watch, is that it has made me interested in other Casio watches, and I have started collecting them. I guess you could say it was the "gateway" watch that got me hooked on more and more Casios.
I have just bought one for the motorbike too and have used another Casio x 20 years which is now difficult to read and not waterproof anymore on the handlebars with a thermometer
Got mine a week now and I love it. The countdown timer is very useful for when you are making some food and want to be reminded when rice or pasta is cooked. The interface is superb , my favourite on any Casio I have seen, having local time always available is great. Also the different chime when you navigate to the main screen is useful and helps navigating without looking. I have the one with the blue-green line across the screen and it looks great. I highly recommend anyone this watch. Has all the features most people would use in a smart watch on a regular basis without the need to charge all the time or being outdated the next year a new model comes out.
Thank you for setting the record straight on this beautiful looking watch. I have been looking at buying this for a while now, but was finding myself feeling a little confused after watching some of the reviews. thank you, Sir.
There is also a way to set the declination. I bought one of these at a discount several years ago but didn't wear it very often. The battery finally died and it ended up setting on the shelf for about a year. I finally got a new battery, which is about the size of a nickel, and realized that I had forgotten how to set it. No problem, I did a RUclips search and like everything else, there was a video. When you want to calibrate the compass, the next step is to set the declination (Spokane, where I live is -8.9°). I used another compass to check it and it seems to be spot on. Good video, bye the way...
Going to use this as a camp watch. Bought it specifically for the compass and the light. At night if there is a bump in the night I can press the button and see the time without having to turn on any lights. And as long as you calibrate and use the compass as you demonstrated it can be a valuable nav tool. Thanks for the vid!
I bought a Protrek triple sensor watch about six months ago, nice watch overall. The compass in it has the same issues and limitations as the SGW-100. When calibrated and used properly it could be a useful backup if I ever loose my Cammenga compass while in the woods. I'd love to see Casio produce a three axis compass that you could use reliably like a traditional magnetic compass.
This is only $29 on Amazon rn. Great video. I wouldn't have known to give the watch some slack on accuracy and may have been upset with my purchase hadn't you shown some niche tips. 👌Great video and info.
solid work, thanks getting into details! A neat thing in between "time piece" and "sensor watch" - like you said: nice they decided to keep a product like this in the line up instead of going only for top tier technology.
One suggestion to make the calibration easier and more accurate is to place a cup or drinking glass upside down and place the watch on it and turn the watch in a circle.
Very good, extremely usefully technical information, on the built in Electronic compass, well presented and easy to understand. I bought a similar watch, just waiting for it to show-up in the mail, I'll be running through your steps with it, in the near future.
I own this exact watch. Yes, i use the compass while on my wrist and often ignore the please Cal notification. This morning, i got a nearly 180 degree error (judging off position of the sun). So yes, i definitely believe the people missing by 20 degrees. I do wear this alot..almost every day
Protrek still use Triple Sensor Version 3 BUT there are some premium Protrek and G-shock models that have 3-axix compass and they compensate not flat measuring method. For example G-SHOCK GULFMASTER GWN-Q1000 or Ptotrek PRW-7000
Great Review !! I have been looking to get one of these for some time now, coz my wrist is very small just wondering whether this would fit ? how long the straps of this watch pls ?
I think your presentation is awesome thank you for sharing this video I have that watch I'm a big fan of Casio I have a lot of collections and a mace fit and tinwoo an grandly watchs
I'm wondering... Two questions... 1st, if you never used the compass, about how long would a battery last? 2nd, if you used the compass say, 5 times a day, every day, then how long would a battery last? Just estimates are fine, just wondering the compass/temperature button affects battery life. Thank you!
@@SuburbanPathfinder Not a "statistically significant" piece of information but I have one of these purchased for a trip in 2011. With minimal use of features (ie: mainly timekeeping only) I have just had the battery run out (ie: 12 years later) 😃 Your mileage may vary...
Chris Devarenne I haven’t forgotten mine completely but I don’t exercise them as much as I should. I took second place in my age range in the East Coast championships once, back in the mid 1980s but that was a long time ago. Thanks for the feedback!
hello i want to buy the sgw 100 watch but i need to know when you activate the backlight and push any button does the light turn off?..for example can i set an alarm in the dark or set the timer?.
I’m thinking about picking one up myself. Despite my bias against electronic gadgetry, I’m kind of intrigued now. Plus, I think most of the Protreks are solar so you shouldn’t have to worry about battery life.
@@michaelvoorhees5978 to level the watch. With a mechanical watch, if unlevel the sun will reflect off the wrong part of the bezel. With this digital one and ones with simple electronics if unlevel your azimuth will be way off and a compounded error given the approximate nature of this system.

Wasn't a lockdown.
Everybody was free to come and go from their house.
People call it a lockdown cause they think it's cool.
It's not.
Yeah I was the same when I bought my first g shock back in 2014. Now I've owned over 40 of them since 😆

Al Friesen I would love to see that also.
This is when you need a Garmin instinct or a G Shock Mudmaster
Good review thanks,it’s a good backup but still nothing beats a real map and compass ! No reliance on batteries, signals etc.
Robert Mansell, thanks for the positive feedback. I agree, regarding the map and compass.

Casio watches are amazing. I have never had one break on me. They have been very reliable and I have a very active lifestyle.

People who were complaining about the SGW-100 didn't actually calibrate the compass.
Travis Walker, I suspect you are correct.
How do you do this?
@@tcp7 it's written in the manual.

What a brilliant breakdown video man. Put the haters to sleep haha

No wonder it has no big sensor in the side because it has no barometer. Thank you for the very useful video, full of info.
Thank you for the positive feedback!
Thanks for the video. I am considering purchasing this watch and this is good to know that it does work as a compass.

The only issue I’ve had with this watch (3 times now), is the watch band fails after a year or two. New bands are around $20.
A very well made video 👍 I use a Casio SGW 1000 with triple sensor. Liked it so far.
D Majumdar thank you!
Very comprehensive review, thanks

It is quite a long strap. The overall length, including watch case straps and buckle, is just over 26 cm.

This watch can be use as a treasure locator
What about the thermometer, is it as accurate as the compass?
so you prefer negative display over positive one ?
No. I find the positive easier to read.
8:36 no when hear electronic compass today they think “what I’s a compass”
Cool
Is the negative display clear and readable in daylight?
Yes but not at all angles. I’m not a big fan of Casio’s negative displays.
Get the non negative!!!!!!!!
Ok with 1° error...but 1° is 60 nautical miles, so that error is too much!
No. I definitely would not try to use this for navigation to sail to Bermuda.
Dear god it took 13 1/2 minutes to get to the real info
I'd consider a protrek to find out how good the compass is in a digital watch.

Do you think your phones compass is correct? I dont and I suspect it has a very similar chip to that in the watch. Should have used a real compass.

Solar battery would have made it pricier, and more desirable than most g-shocks.
Casio makes G-Shock and Solar versions that are more expensive.
I’d love to get a solar model.
Did you get them for $41 Amazon
I actually got mine on clearance at Walmart. I think it was less than $20.

If the crystal is flat you can use a drop of water to level the watch.
