Even after all the wonderful story's from the first Games, his death broke me. His Story, Mario trying to save him, Olivia running away into the Mines, Bobby's Soul, Mario making Olivia happy with the Mask and then him looking at the Boulder remains... o shit and then that music. Aw no man I cried so much.
You know what makes this scene work so well? Not only was Bobby a truly likeable and entertaining character that tagged along for a good chunk of the first part of the game, but also Olivia's reaction. Up to this point she's been portrayed as being naïve about the world, often joking around a bit. But here, she's very much serious. The moment she saw the boulder was gone and the crater Bobby made, she put two and two together and realized what happened. But she didn't try brushing it off, she did what anyone would do: run and cry out of guilt for what happened. No doubt she felt some sort of guilt after realizing he'd done it to save her from being crushed. I also must give Nintendo and Intelligent Systems major props for not pulling a fake-out. They could have made it so Bobby somehow survived and he reappears from beneath the rubble, but instead they actually killed him off for good, but made his last message to Mario pretty heartwarming. Overall, this is how you do a sacrifice scene.
Something that also made the scene for me was Mario's reaction. You barely ever see Mario emote do much, especially in response to a Bob-Omb exploding, so when he rushes with a panicked expression to stop Bobby, you can tell that they had a real connection before his death.
Also the fact that Olivia basically ended her own life to wish for the cranes to be free, along with her brother, proves that she basically copied what Bobby did, take her own life for someone else.
“Olivia getting crushed, Bobby’s amnesia, and now his sacrifice. All of it leads back to Olly, the Origami King. Before, it was just another big bad. Now, it’s personal. I’m gonna find Olivia, and we’re gonna kick out that little punks creases.”
Me if I ever get the game at the final hit: *Dedicates every punch to a flat boi* *Pauses* "And this. This is for my friend. My sidekick. The one who died saving Olivia. The reason I stand here." "This is for Bobby." *Unpauses and MURDERS the evil king.*
I think what's fitting to Bobby's character is if you go back and take photos with him you see him in the photos as a ghost. This means that Bobby was really unable to leave Mario's side and continued to be with him throughout the adventure as an unseen spirit. He started this adventure and he wanted to see it through to the end even if he no longer has a physical body to do so. That's dedication.
@@superaaron2603 Then it holds true. He never left. He just was invisible and no longer had physical form. What I don't get though is what sets Bobby apart from Bombette and Bobbery. Those 2 can seem to explode but it just knocks them away. But when Bobby did it he becomes a ghost.
@@warioland523 No I mean he never say that but it would be better if he said that just to make it better so he let both Mario and Olivia know that wherever he is, he will always be on their side no matter what. He never said that like I said. Like I said, I mean it would have better if he said that as his last word before he disappears.
In a Paper Mario game... this was the first time I ever yelled, "NOOO BOBBY!!" Seriously... after blowing up Admiral Bobbery so many times in Thousand Year Door, there was a moment I wanted Bobby's death to be fake...

The best Paper Mario in 13 years, and that’s saying something, even though Color Splash was good. This game is probably as close to the originals as we will ever get, and it actually feels close to being on par with them.
I was honestly shocked that they did this in a bloody modern Paper Mario game. What makes it work is that we spent such a long time with Bobby for the first part of the game, and he was a legit good character, so him dying truly felt like a loss. A big one. One thing I was happy to realized, is that I was playing in my bed, and I have a lot of plushies, and yup, I have a bob-omb one! When I looked at it... This wasn't exactly Bobby... But I really roconized him through my plush! I even tried to put him in the sleeping position that he is in the battles ^^ He had forgotten his memories with his friends... I just beat this game the night before last night. Rewatching this scene made a tear come to my eye, and the moment where Olivia gets happy again made it all come out. The ending to this game just makes those sorts of scenes with Olivia hit so different. I know it sounds cheesy and weak, but... thank you Bobby and Olivia. Something that hit me hard watching this scene was that, prior to this game, I didn't think Bob-Ombs actually died when they blew up. Doing my first play through and holy crap I was not expecting to feel this way. My Mario sat there after the blast for a good 3-5 mins as I too sat there just blowen away by what I had just seen
So cool and surprising that the paper Mario series has some of the best writing in the RPG genre. Even sticker star and color splash have really tight writing.
this is one of my favorite moments in any mario game, because it shows that mario is willing to do anything to help a friend in need, even a silly little goomba dance
Bobby is the most unappreciated character in any Paper Mario game out here. despite looking like a regular bob-omb,. he turned out to be so much more than a regular bob-omb. usually, regular bob-ombs would just feel like Wind-up toys that just explode without life. Bobby feels different because he actually feels sentient and alive. he's not your average OC partner ether, he turned out to have more feelings than most OC characters like Bobbery, who could just explode without any sacrifice. So when we see a sentient bob-omb actually sacrifice himself and lose his life to save Olivia and allow Mario to advance, you just feel the moment. It really makes you appreciate the modern Paper Mario games a lot more.
i saw this mentioned in another comment section but as Bobby’s memories play, the music is a pitched up version of the OST ‘memory’ from Super Paper Mario. You’ll never unhear it
@@gearhead2519 Dont worry, everyone moves on their own time Charles is from Henry stickmin, he's like one of those chill and funny people The game is pretty fun, it's like a choose your own adventure kind of thing
I don't want to read to much into the comments to spoil the game for myself. I just got done with this part but when Bob-omb suggested he had an idea of how to help Olivia I kinda knew what he was planning to do. I was just thinking "No bro, don't tell me you are planning to blow yourself up, because basically you are a bomb" I was thinking man Bob-omb is going to betray me or do something drastic. When I got to his sacrifice part and the message he told Mario I shed a tear lol so sad 😢 I had not even noticed he didn't have a fuse till then.
After seeing this scene, I literally stopped to play Taps on my phone to pay respects for Bobby's sacrifice. I didn't care that Olivia ran off. I didn't care that I had to progress into the tunnel. *I just wanted to pay respects to my late friend Bobby.*

I have never cried in a Mario game my life, he was such a good bomb! I cried a little when he said "I had so much fun traveling with you and olivia" but right when he lit himself up I said "NO YOU CANT DIE YOUR MY BEST FRIEND!!" but he exploded and I cried
Bob-bombs seem to have 2 explosions. A standard explosion they survive (like Bombette and Bobbery in the Paper Mario series) where they unleash a burst of energy in a blast (sort of like the Pokemon move Self-Destruct), and much larger explosions where they actually blow up and die.

Everyone who going to play the game: *insert every sad mario music*
Super got me in tears tho.
Villager of SmashVille Yeah, just tack a "modern" at the front and it's accurate.
Mario rpg sad music inserted.
Yeah I teared up
2:33 I remember this tune from super paper mario, the one on the wii. I think it's called "memory." It brings back good childhood memories.
The truest Bob omb of all. Semper Fi, Bobby.
Top 10 saddest anime deaths
[1]: Bobby
Yes…
That hammer slam right after gaining back control of Mario is honestly fitting, like it was done out of frustration
I was genuinely hoping he would jump out again all like 'baba babooey, forget about it ayaya!' But no. I loved Bobby. He was truly the best, you dont know how many screenshots I have of him saved on my switch. Now hes gone...
it’s disturbing to see mario genuinely sad
4:15 Mario: Bobby! Noooooooo!
Doing my first play through and holy crap I was not expecting to feel this way. My Mario sat there after the blast for a good 3-5 mins as I too sat there just blowen away by what I had just seen
Bobby: *Change Da World, My Final Message. Goodb ye.*
I was looking for this comment
*explodes in slow mo*
Bobby is such a true friend.
Just like i did to save henry. The greatest plan was sacrifice to save others.
Sacrifice gang
remember
Bobby is Charles Calvin confirmed
Is the Valiant Hero from the Paper Mario universe
This is one of the few moments in a video game that actually made me tear up
I actually cried
Bobby is right. How many times have you thrown a bob omb without once thinking that he or she was a living creature?
In terms of Mario 64 gameplay, countless Bob-Ombs.
I can’t believe I’m crying for a literal video game bomb’s death 😭 RIP Bobby
I actually cant watch it, I played through this yesterday and I'm still crying
This is actually really sad. Mario actually emotes.
Bobby had a better death than Joel in TLOU2. AT LEAST BOBBY DIED AS AN HERO.
Correction.
Bobby death was actually sad and dont make a badass charachter a total idiot just for the sake of the plot.
BLOCKED
@@maur1c1o99 from what ?
Ricardo Oliveira nothing it’s a joke I just disagree....SIMPLE!!!
GalacticHypernova what does that mean?
Rest In Peace, Bobby.
Now, every time Mario steps on a bomb om, he can’t help but remember his dear lost friend. He holds back his tears. Then carries on.
I can't believe I cried at a fictional sentient bomb...
i saw this mentioned in another comment section but as Bobby’s memories play, the music is a pitched up version of the OST ‘memory’ from Super Paper Mario. You’ll never unhear it
I almost drowned in my own tears, no joke
Those eyes of determination from bobby when the desert theme plays is amazing
People: charles death is the most saddest death of all time!
Bobby: *hold my sacrifice*
Um, sorry for not being on time with everything, but who's Charles?
@@gearhead2519 Dont worry, everyone moves on their own time
Charles is from Henry stickmin, he's like one of those chill and funny people
The game is pretty fun, it's like a choose your own adventure kind of thing
Rest in peace bobby, Your death will not be in vain
I don't want to read to much into the comments to spoil the game for myself. I just got done with this part but when Bob-omb suggested he had an idea of how to help Olivia I kinda knew what he was planning to do. I was just thinking "No bro, don't tell me you are planning to blow yourself up, because basically you are a bomb" I was thinking man Bob-omb is going to betray me or do something drastic. When I got to his sacrifice part and the message he told Mario I shed a tear lol so sad 😢 I had not even noticed he didn't have a fuse till then.
Me beating the living sh#t out of Olly: THIS IS FOR BOBBY!!!
I'm glad Olly dies in the end
i got even MORE emotional when we went to cheer up olivia and the happy music starts playing, it was just such a beautiful moment 🥺🥺
oh great, first Charles Calvin, now Bobby? why must all the great characters die at the end?
Bobby for smash 😭😭😭 respect this bob omrade
At least he gets to be reunited with all of his bomb homies.
Been a year and I still can’t handle the scene
After seeing this scene, I literally stopped to play Taps on my phone to pay respects for Bobby's sacrifice. I didn't care that Olivia ran off. I didn't care that I had to progress into the tunnel.
*I just wanted to pay respects to my late friend Bobby.*
Noooo
He was so young
This scene singlehandedly made an entire fandom cry-
The first time I played this I was crying because for the first time ever, a character that was good died (I've never played FF7 ok) and that really hit me
But don't Bombette and Admiral Bobbery explode multiple times without getting hurt themselves?
Maybe because Bobby was a normal Bob-Omb
different games (yes i know this is a 3 year old comment lol)
I have never cried in a Mario game my life, he was such a good bomb! I cried a little when he said "I had so much fun traveling with you and olivia" but right when he lit himself up I said "NO YOU CANT DIE YOUR MY BEST FRIEND!!" but he exploded and I cried
Bob-bombs seem to have 2 explosions. A standard explosion they survive (like Bombette and Bobbery in the Paper Mario series) where they unleash a burst of energy in a blast (sort of like the Pokemon move Self-Destruct), and much larger explosions where they actually blow up and die.
Even now, I still tear up watching this scene.
2020 can't get any wor-
Origami King and The Henry Stickmin Collection: **releases**
Ok nic-
The best character in each game: **dies**
...
end 2020 already!
Puffballs: *Haha Mission go Complete*
Nintendo: *One of Mario's funniest adventure is about to unfold. By the way, I'm gonna remember you everytime that your best friend isn't with you anymore, so have fun!!!*
I didn’t know I would ever cry while playing a Mario game. But it happened.
It’s the music that hurts me more...
Bobby is the best Paper Mario character by far
I had no emotions the moment bobby died, but when he came back as a spirit i just started brawling my eyes out T_T
Wow, never thought Mario would have a bodycount besides enemies
Whole time playing PMTOK I was like it's a kids game nothing bad will happen next u know this happens
Wait... but the previous Bob-Omb partners never died from blowing up....
The TTYD chapter 7 bob ombs have words for you
Lucky GuyDX partners
I think the basic bombs we see in every game are built differently than the more colorful and uniquely designed ones we see in every other game
Damn it bobby what i tell you bout dying-
The only time Mario shows actual emotion
Where Bobby died was sad, but that ending made me happy
Se crea la máquina del tiempo:
Las pibas: Por fin regresaré con mi ex.
Los pibes: No Bobby yo traje otra bomba no te sacrifiques porfavor
Cierto 👌
In the manga adaptation of origami king bobby doesn’t blow up and die, he breaks the rock by screaming at it and then leaves to go to the hospital to have his throat checked. Not even joking, you can look up Super Mario Kun.
I hope you can revive him somehow
Put valiant hero as the music
4:16 Mario: Bobby, don't do it!!
Bobby: Goodbye Big M.
Mario:Nooooooooooooo!
(BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM)
