I've watched numerous videos on this repair. This has to be the most in depth explanation of the job. Well done! I'm getting ready to tackle this job myself. Thank you for your thorough explanation of everything!
Man I was worried about the EPB, Everything I seen up till now was I had to use a scan tool. Because of your video and reading all the comments I realized now this is a much much easier way for a backyard mechanic to do his own work!. Thank you so much for this video just like everyone else says very detailed which helps immensely thank you!
Great video, i thought i would need a scan tool to reset emergency brake, but figured there had to be a manual way to reset it. Best video i have seen on RUclips
Thank you for this awesome and detailed video! I just completed all 4 rotors and pads replacement saving me at least $300. Still costed me approximately $300 for new pads and rotors but that includes grease, brake cleaner, jack stands, etc. The torx 30 bits for the rotor and the EPB were a pain in my ass to get free. Tight space behind the brake line for that damn torx bit. 😂
Excellent video. Very clear instructions, very good video and very thorough. I don't comment much but I had to for this. Thank you for the instructions as I'm about to work on my neighbors car and was concerned with the electronic E-brakes.
Your tip with the electronic brake worked perfect. Autozone has the brake caliper return tool loaner. The caliper actually has to turn to go back in. This made the job a lot easier. I did not have to remove the electronic part from the caliper.
I strongly recommend against leaving the electric parking brake on the brake assembly while winding the piston. You’ll be forcing the electric motor to turn and could break it or cause a sensor read error. Following mechanics guides, the manual process I show or using the scan tool are the safest. With the method I show, no turning of the piston with a return tool is needed. To each their own, and thanks for the comment.
@@DavidStumph I just put everything back together and I have no error lights, and the brakes are like new. If I have any issues I will leave an update.
Very lucky. I ran into a case where the person damaged the epb sensor which was a tough fix since the part basically isn't available. Months later and $$$$$ the problem was fixed. Better safe than sorry I actuality prefer the mechanically withdrawl to the scan tool because you can physically see what you're doing
Good video. Rotors don't always come off as easy as shown in your video. A few hard wacks on the rotor's face edges using a good dead-blow 4lb rubber mallet will loosen the rotor. I also found tapping the rotor torx 30-bit set screw with a hammer along with the rust-penetrating lubricant will make it easier to remove the rotor set screw if it is somewhat seized by dirt and rust. Most repair shops won't clean or lubricate the brake system as well as you demonstrated in your video. That's why I do the work myself.
Good video - super helpful - unbelievable how hard those caliper bolts are in - must be from the factory loctite - ended up snapping one - dangit!!! - i'll be sending to shop to get that out -
Did the rear brakes on my 2018 about a year ago. I hadn't seen this video but having done brakes in the past dove into it on my own. My procedure was exactly what was shown here and worked fine. I was a little apprehesive about the EPB but figured what could go wrong. A little grease on the motor o-ring helped install of the motor. The screw that is turned by the motor was easily rotated with the tip of a flat blade screwdriver held into the internal spline. If I recall there are two holes or notches in the face of the piston that needs to be aligned with the matching pins on the back side of the inner pad. This prevents the piston from rotating during operation.
I follow all the steps! Thanks! After changing the rotors and breaking, as I drive I hear some rolling sound from the rear as I drive. Do you know why I hear this?😢
@@DavidStumph For me it turned out the battery needed to be replaced. The radio was also cutting out whenever the car was restarting after the auto stop at stop lights etc... Once the battery was replaced both issues went away
We were only changing brake pads, amd after reassembly there is a high pitched noise and it feels as though something is being run over with the rear tire.... any ideas what that could be?
This video got me all the way to caliper bracket. Then no -go... My equinox is AWD. Theres a big ole axle (little really) that doesnt give me enough room to get the bottom bolt out.
In the emergency brake motor, after turning the torque screw into service mode, do you screw it back out? Or just leave it in service mode and remount??
@@DavidStumph thanks yeah screwed it back out but the caliper just pushed back out, so screwed it back in and left it, got rear rotors and pads replaced thanks man👍
Job complete on 2020 Equinox the only step i skipped was unclipping the electronic cable from the retention clip and after I put it in service mode I put it back together and used a flat head to depress the calibers the old school way by screwing the caliber back on and using it like a pry bar to depress the calibers after that I tighten the two t30 screws hand tight and finished my job and if this helps you only need a t30 screw driver to unscrew it took me like 25 minutes to do the whole job fast $125.00 you help me make
I am changing my brakes on my own for the first time, I don’t have my dad to ask so I came to RUclips to learn how to do it and I’m nervous as all get out but since watching this in depth video I feel less nervous and ready to tackle this project! I didn’t want to pay almost $1000 for someone to change them for me. Since this is my first time and I want to make sure I do this right, do you only need to bleed these or only the fronts?
Put a small amount of pb blaster or other similar penetrant on them, let them sit for an hour, apply more and try again. They shouldn’t be too tight since they are in plastic.
Hi David...where is the 80 lb. ft. value from? The shop manual says 74 lb. ft. plus 15 to 30 degrees. What is the source of this value that you are using?
The only thing I do not understand is why messing with the parking brake was necessary in the first place. Was it that the caliper piston would not retract if you didn't put the brake into maintenance mode?
When I push down on the parking brake button a sign comes up saying "parking brake engaged". When I pull up it says "parking brake disengaged". In your video you say to disengage the brake by pushing down. Should it be engaged or disengaged?
Hi Martha! Odd to hear your parking brake controls are inverted to mine, but regardless of that I can confirm how this should work. Before you start the change, you want to have the parking brake disengaged otherwise you won’t be able to get the parts off. When you complete the change, you’ll want to engage and then disengage the parking brake to reset the parking brake positioning. Hope that helps clarify, good luck!
Dude...awesome video! I truly believed (told so) this was dealer only and a scan tool was needed to retract the electronic portion of the braking system. I feel I can confidently do this myself. What pads and rotors did you use? I have gotten over 100k on my factory set and have considered going w GM parts for the brake service. Thank you very much.
How do you get the electronic brake to release? You show how to get the clip off but you say nothing about retracting the pressure from the electronical component
Not sure the specific count. You can turn it until it’s seated fully, that’s what I did and its been fine every time I’ve done this job. Multiple car manufacturers, all similar with the electronic parking brake.
Anybody else having a whale of a time getting that torx bolt off near the brake line. Nothing I have is fitting in between there and I’m about to take brake line lose just to make room
That's what I had to do. Didn't have any T30s long or thin enough to fit in that tiny gap. For anyone who may need the advice, a pair of vise grips on the brake line will help with fluid loss. Just don't go crazy tight.
This has got to be the best car maintenance tutorial I've ever seen on RUclips. Every step well explained with a clear view of everything. Thanks!

That sounds like the shroud that goes around the brake rotor. Bend it away from the rotor to stop the sound while rolling.
Thank you for this, who ever engineered this design needs to no longer breathe.
Do you have a detailed video for the front as well??
I do not as that is a standard disc brake change procedure.
Thank you for the posting. It was clear and concise and easily understandable
GREAT video. Tks
Shockingly good you’re the bomb
Very clear, great job
Fantastic Tutorial!!!! 1 Question... is this good for AWD also?
A warning popped up in my 2018 equinox saying to service the "Brake Assist", any idea what that might be referring to?
This just showed up on mine…did you figure it out? Concerned it may be the brake vacuum pump failing or a bad brake sensor…
@@DavidStumph For me it turned out the battery needed to be replaced. The radio was also cutting out whenever the car was restarting after the auto stop at stop lights etc... Once the battery was replaced both issues went away
@@dnetsuj hmm! That’s a relatively easy fix, might need to check there first. Thanks!
Had the same messages and behavior. The battery change corrected. Working on another video showing this. Thank you!
Once the module is in service mode are you counter clock wise the bolt before capping it

Check the hardware
Great video, but curious if it matters how many turns you do with the 7mm?

@@DavidStumph thanks yeah screwed it back out but the caliper just pushed back out, so screwed it back in and left it, got rear rotors and pads replaced thanks man👍
Great video!
Do you have a video for front brakes?
Do not. Maybe one day, they are straightforward so potentially less need showing this process.
On our 2019, I had to slightly bend the brake line to get clearance for the bolt on e-brake assembly.
So the epb procedure is necessary when only changing the pads? Excellent video also!!
And rotors, but yes.
@@DavidStumph Thanks a lot!

When you reseat the EPB into the caliper, can you go ahead and just put the screws in anyways before depressing the piston?

Put a small amount of pb blaster or other similar penetrant on them, let them sit for an hour, apply more and try again. They shouldn’t be too tight since they are in plastic.

I have a 2019. I'm guessing it's the same procedure. Are your brakes still functioning ok with no errors?
Yep, should be the same as far as I’m aware. No problems to report.
So when you disengage the e brake you keep the car on throughout the whole process?
How did you do those 18mm caliper bracket bolts with ease? I'm struggling with this right now.
Lube with rust penetrate let sit for an hour, and use a breaker bar. Sometimes you might have to apply heat.
Yes, lifesaver
The only thing I do not understand is why messing with the parking brake was necessary in the first place. Was it that the caliper piston would not retract if you didn't put the brake into maintenance mode?
Correct.
300mm or 321mm frotor or 2wd 2018 equinox?
Both diameters were used. You have to measure rotor or check option codes for brakes. J60 is 300 mm.
To get the option codes scan the QR code in the driver's door frame on the B pillar.
So I did it this way now my esc servise light is on and traction control doesn’t work any tips
When you pumped the brakes at the end you said “with the car on until pedal is stiff” didn’t you mean off?
No.
When I push down on the parking brake button a sign comes up saying "parking brake engaged". When I pull up it says "parking brake disengaged". In your video you say to disengage the brake by pushing down. Should it be engaged or disengaged?
