Did a 5 year apprenticeship from 1970 to 75, with a Ford main dealer, left the garages in the mid 90s, for better paid job and now retired, never worked on EPB's as never came in until 2001, thank you for showing how to do this, never to old to learn, a great video
Undo electric wire, by poppin its safety clip. use 5mm hex and remove motor behind brake. then remove Caliper. if caliper and piston are too tight, use 5mm hex in the back of the piston winder, turn clock wise. once caliper is off then use c clamp on piston an tighten till resistance. turn the 5mm hex clockwise again till resistance, then turn c clamp more till the piston is retracted. do brake pads and chassie, once set an lubed, mount motor back on piston. then place caliper back. just did a set of backs, no codes no issues. its called a manual reset.
May be sound stupid but you can try with engine on , because sometime if you you do one wrong connection or your negative positive terminals touch by mistake , these vehicles are very sensitive and end up having bigger issues .
You are a real MVP sir. A hero to be exact. You really saved me with this one. You are truly appreciated. Thank you 🙏🏽. May goodness and mercy follow you all the days of your life.
this video should have a couple of million views, fantastic content, glad to see a fellow Irish man helping others and doing well for himself at the same time.
Just a note on this. I’ve just done a 2017 Nissan trail. I had to power up the motor and close the pads onto the disc before the handbrake would reset. The hand brake switch was flashing at me and wouldn’t work until I powered up the motor and closed the brake. Great video cheers for that
This video was an absolute godsend. Save my bacon. Thanks so much. Really appreciate guys like yourselves taking the time to put this onto RUclips. Thanks.
Pal you just saved me £230. Made the simple lead and powered it from the cig lighter socket. Worked a treat with powering the piston in. After that - simple job. Really appreciate the video. 👍
Excellent advice and step by step guide. My only suggestion here is that some EPB equipped cars first need to have the EPB 'parking on' turned off, before working on the rear brakes, as some EPB's automatically apply themselves as soon as you exit the vehicle/open the door.
Excellent tip using battery to drive back the EPB motors. Worked perfectly on BMW X1 2016 F48 diesel. Foxwell NT530 was supposed to do it but didn’t. Very many thanks for posting this video. It has saved me much heartache and gnashing of teeth.
I did the 2nd option on my 2016 Honda Civic EX-T after thinking it would be like any other brake job I've done. THANK YOU! Its a bit tricky but it will compress at least it did for me and no issues after I just turned my EPB on and off once everything was back together. No lights on the dash NOTHING. Probably going to invest in a scan tool, but there's nothing like knowing a way around the CPU.
my friend, you are by far the smartest mechanic &the easiest to understand. The way you explain things is straightforward &in layman's terms. thank you so much for posting these very important videos for me to be able to fix the car with EBP brake system.Btw, I like your accent. The way you say Car is very Boston sounding with less R&more ah😂
Brilliantly demonstrated by you mu dear friend and I am going to replace rotor and brake pads on my Vauxhall Grandland x turbo diesel.Garage wanted £360 to do it. I all the parts for £ 120 from Halfords. I just want to thank you for your help with this project.yours Bob Naik.
Thanks bro for the information process step by step your knowledge is highly appreciated, there’s some mechanics rip you off not been honest for there job
Hello there, iv just come across your video for electric handbrake rewinding, i have to be HONEST WITH YOU i was loosing sleep about this issue, i thought i was going to be charged a fortune for having my rear brakes done as both sides need discs and pads , YOU SIR ARE A GENIUS , PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK YOU DO BY HELPING MOTORISTS THAT CANT AFFORD GARAGE BILLS, AND MOST OF ALL BE SAFE WHILE WORKING ON CARS , AND DRIVING ON THE ROADS WITH ALL THE OTHER HALFWITS THAT GOT THERE DRIVING LICENSE OUT OF A LUCKY BAG S.
This was the very first video I watched of yours. I needed to do the rear discs and pads on my wife's 14 plate Qashqai. Having done them before I ruined discs and pads in 6 months as the EHB hadn't been set correctly. I used option 2 and the video was very very helpful.
Thanks for the video really helped me out. Heads up for any Nissan owners with electric parking brakes, make sure you order pads and rotors that specifically state that they are for electric parking brakes in the description. eBay is much better at including this information than Amazon.
This is awesome, so detailed, great video. I am know you helped many DYI people with your videos. I have been working on my cars for years. Thank you for teaching us something new, specially to those that rather do things ourselves, I wish you many more views.
Removing the two bolts holding the electric motor onto the caliper definitely works - tried and tested. Thanks for the upload 👍🏻 However, if you go down this route, make sure everything is completely clean before disassembly, as you don't want any contamination inside the assembly. Jet wash inside the wheel well, use soft brushes around the caliper, small brushes for the tight areas, and plenty of brake cleaner, then you'll be able to remove the handbrake motor from the caliper.
It did, absolutely. Pity though when I got to the caliper carrier to do the discs, the bolts were seized. That was supposed to be the easy bit. Finally got the job done with a bolt extractor socket set and plenty of heat.
What a great video. Thank you. I’ve always worked on my own cars but I’m about to change the discs and pads on my first car with an e brake. This info was priceless. Good man yourself. Happy new year. Thanks again
The two wire set-up worked great! I thought I was going to have to buy an expensive scanner, or worse yet, have to take it in to the dealer :( Thanks again!
Great video your going to have lots of viewers looking at this video for sure , good tuition and many many thanks , may i ask what is holding on the brake calliper carrier is it 2 bolts or splined machine bolts , as im just woundering whats holding the carrier , thank you again
I used the first technique to release the parking brake and was able to successfully change my rear pads and rotors on a 2019 VW TIGUAN. (I also did a brake fluid flush and bled the brake lines.) I scanned I got codes : C10E129 -PARKING BRAKE MOTORS -IMPLAUSIBLE SIGNAL C100D13 - LEFT PARKING HRAKE MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY - OPEN CIRCUIT C100E13 - RIGHT PARKING BRAKE MOTOR VOLTAGE SUPPLY -OPEN CIRCUIT I reset the parking brake after the repair using the parking brake button (engage/disengage two times) It seems to be fine. I’m thinking I need to make sure the connectors for the parking brake are firmly pushed in. The Brake Fluid Reservoiris full 🤷 Any suggestions would be helpful 🙏🏽 Thank you
Well explained. Like any good teacher, you show multiple methods to accomplish the same task. In older systems, we would wind back the piston with a special tool designed to rotate the piston. Is there any reason to do that with electric E brakes?
Manually winding back or pushing back the caliper piston on e-piston systems will damage the motor. Manipulating the motor position first, allows the caliper piston to then be moved.
On some vehicles, it is possible to release the electronic parking brake without any tools whatsoever. I've been able to do this on a 2008 Citroen C4 Picasso and a 2005 Renault Espace. I don't know if it would work with calipers that have the actuator motor attached to them. Both the Citroen and Renault had a separate actuator (it was located under the front passenger seat on the Citroen).
Hello O'Rileys! I’m so glad I found your video, because I urgently need to replace the Passat’s rear brake pads, but I couldn’t push the brake cylinder back to its original position. My question is, do I need to calibrate for new deposits or do I set up on my own? Thanks for uploading, you solved my problem! Attila from Hungary! 👍☺️
I would like to thank you for this smashing video how to.....!! This saves me a sh.. load of money that a dealer would have charged me. Thank you, thank you thank you!! Besides the above, could you be so kind to provide me with 2 video's (links) in which you show and explain the replacement of the front and rear discs of an Vauxhall (Opel) Insignia 2016 or simular? A lot of thanks in advance.
Just a note of warning if you're planning on going for the second method of this process. I had an electronic handbrake (B6 Passat) fail on me whilst abroad on holiday, causing loads of hassle!!! Some clown had carried out the service using the second method and cocked up completely the re-connecting of the motor to caliper, breaking the rubber seal and fitment. Corrosion took hold, and the spline rotted, causing the motor to simply strip the splines off whilst the brake was on full hold/park! Vehicle immobilized and robbing tow trucks and garages rubbing their hands together!!
Hi Jimmy, great video. Thank you. Two questions, will the manual system work similarly on a 2014 VWGolf? And have you ever heard of the battery method causing problems to the ecu? Thanks again.
With some cars the attempt to put the brake on by the lever after replacing the pads will result into a parking brake error code. It get set when tightening the parking brake takes longer than the usual 2..3 seconds (the computer remembers it was set on the last time, so seeing it so lose again means for it a brake system fault), which it will take when you loosened it al, the way in before. Better is to tighten it by the parking brake lever before the pad replacement, Then losen it by the external battery, replace the pads and then tighten it back by the external battery again. That way the real state of the brake (fully tightened) will correspond to what the computer remembers as the last operation (setting it on by the lever), so no error code, even on cars with very "sensitive" error triggers.
@@r.castellano3296 1. Set the brakes ON using the parking brake lever, so you start with the brakes in tight-ON position. Try to remember the sound how much the actuator slowed down at the instant the electronic stop tightening. 2. Disconnect the cable from the actuator 3. Connect an external 12V (a small gel cell battery with two wires, ...; careful to not short circuit them) to the actuator so it releases and opens up a sufficient gap (either you know the polarity, or you have to try it out, one way it is tightening, the other way releasing), you may need to pry-push the pads to open with it 4. Replace the pads and/or do the service you need to on that brake 5. Connect the external 12V in the opposite polarity to the actuator so it tightens the brake up (when tight, you will hear the actuator slowing down, then disconnect it; the slow down should sound the same way as it does when you use the brakes normally). 6. Reconnect the actuator back to the car harness. At this point the brakes are again in the tight-ON position, so the same as when you start. 7. Repeat from the point "2" for the other wheel 8. Bleed the brakes (if needed,...) 9. Try to release and set the brakes by the normal parking brake lever a few times to confirm it works normally and to let them to settle the slack.
Great video! But I got a problem, I changed my break pads using method no. 2, but now my breaks seem to work worse than before, it kind of feels like i have to press the breakpedal the floor for the breaks to fully engage. Any idea what I may have done wrong??

Still not many cars had EPB !!
Best one yet. Others run electric with caliper off, then have to push piston back some other way. This is simplest. Well done.
Used your video to do my rear brakes on a 2020 Nissan Rouge with EPB. I used the battery and wires method. Worked perfectly. Thanks!!
Thank you, brother. I was baffled by opening the caliber in order to fit it over the new brake pads. You sir are a savior.
Glad I could help
I asked a garage if this were possible so i could do my own brakes, he said it wouldn't work... Knew it would, top man.

Great video, simple and straight to the point, lots of useful information.
Excellent video and well presented. Clear and concise!
Great video from a retired mechanic.

Yes standard DC voltage rules. Reverse polarity equals reverse gear

It won't need calibration

Yes, I'll upload a new one using your video! ☺️ Thanks for the quick reply! 👍

Now that make sense very simple than reading the instruction LOL. Thanks
What a very easy way of doing it. Thanks very much

I know same here
Thanks for watching Michael

Fantastic video, very informative, Thank you so much.
Thank you very much for your support 😊
do we have to disconnect negative terminal first when removing that wire connector?
Looks like my BMW has 3 connectors / pins instead of 2. Any idea how to approach the retraction using your #1 method? Cheers
Just got me a scanner to do my vw, time to return it, as now i know how to do it without the scanner. Subbed, great video.

Not engaged.

Great video! But I got a problem, I changed my break pads using method no. 2, but now my breaks seem to work worse than before, it kind of feels like i have to press the breakpedal the floor for the breaks to fully engage. Any idea what I may have done wrong??
Could of just installed something wrong, not cleaned it good enough ect. Pads sticking on the bracket/clips, pins seized. Hope you figure it out
Hi. Great vid. I have just one question. Why not put the parking break off with the button as I can do this on my scenic and Laguna?
That doesn't allow you to fit new brake pads. Just releases the parking brake
This could cause problems for some cars as the proper procedure adjusts the brake gap and this could lead to an improperly adjusted park brake
what car model that you are working on sir, great video
