I have a past in Graphic Design and for the past year I've been learning to code (just finished my coding bootcamp) - so I am happily claiming 'Coding Unicorn' 🦄 . Also, I loved how succinct and informative this video is. Thanks!
Great insights, and glad I landed on your channel. I actually do both design and dev but with ZERO code, and I’m currently creating a curriculum for a web design course. My focus is on 3 areas: Strategy 50%, Design 30% and No-code development 20%. This ratio is also how the income from web design projects is shared. So, while it’s good for designers/creatives to learn code, my 2 decades experience in design has taught me that Strategy is the one thing that designers and developers should really strive to understand. It is the bridge between the business world and the creator world, and your ultimate path to much higher income - be it as an employee or freelancer. To kick off, start reading and consuming content on Creative Strategy. There’s a lot of great content by Chris Do on his channel “The Futur”.
Thank you so much for this video. As someone with experience in Graphic Design, I have always heard web design and web development, and seen it in job ads but never really bothered to look it up. Now that I know for sure what both of them are, and with the information you shared in this video, I think I would pour my strength into learning the developer side of the whole process.
I love your videos! I am trying to break into technology and I’m afraid as a black woman with no experience, I won’t be taken seriously. I do plan to use your tips to self study, my job offers free courses with udemy, and I have my first meeting with a mentor in a few weeks who is a software engineer. So we will see what happens. Also, where did you get that beautiful desktop screensaver? I can’t see the name but I love how it looks. Side note: I am in the same state as you and hopefully once I get my foot in the door we can possibly connect in the future!
Thank you so much! That's awesome! Honestly being a woman can be your superpower these days. A lot of companies are looking for ways to diversify their spaces and it starts with hiring more women. Don't let being a black woman discourage you, there is space for us!! Ohio! Yes let me know! It doesn't have to be when you get more comfortable with tech I'm always looking to connect with others in the tech space. My screensaver is by Reyna Noriega ( www.reynanoriega.com/ ).
Thanks so much for this video, like it's so brief and yet so informative. And the exciting part is that now I want to explore all these things you just said, figure which is of the two I'm good at or maybe both. Just to mention, I have zero experience in both but your video is giving me the vibe that it doesn't matter, and I can make it. So I'm just gonna go ahead and try!
Your videos are very useful and provide lots of information. I have received lots of help after watching this post, please continue to share this kind of information. Thank you.
Super helpful video, Jess. I appreciate you and the work you're doing. As for myself, I've always had an eye for aesthetics-whether that's with my clothing choices, my living space, or my own designs as a digital marketer. But I'd also like to become a 'coding unicorn' by learning the backend side of things and trying my hand as a developer. Would you recommend any other videos you've created or other creators that share content similar to yours that you like and trust?
I'd love if you can do a tech lingo for dummies, wordpress for dummies, etc. All the videos I've found doesn't "dumb it down" enough. I/we need something that the average person on the street can understand. And I think you have the narrating capabilities for that!
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I’ve been interested in both web development & design for some time now. I believe the field better suits my introverted personality and interests more than my current field that is 95% people interaction-focused. I would love to gain experience in web design & development, but I’m not sure where is a good place to begin. Do you have any tips or advice to help me get started ?
Not sure if you already received an advise yet but I can share my experience if that helps. I am a web designer and plan on learning development as well. The way I look at your situation and if I were in your shoes, I would learn designing first and then development. Why? Web designing is fun, fascinating and easy to learn. While I have learned some coding languages such as Java, C, C++, if I had thought of learning a language first and then getting into designing, I would have quitted long ago. Right now, while designing, I see certain limitations that I feel could be fixed if I knew web development and that's what is motivating me right now to do whatever it takes. Again, it's me. I find coding a little hard. Now if you were to ask, how should I go about it? Put your hands on a few free versions of web designing/building websites such as Wix, WordPress, Figma or the ones that Jess suggested in this video. They are easy to navigate & no classes/guidance is needed. Once you cross that level and get a little frustrated with their functionalities, I'll welcome you to my boat. Good Luck my Friend!
Thank you so much for watching this video! To start, I always recommend freeCodeCamp especially if you're interested in frontend web development. I am not a designer so I'm honestly not sure what design resources are out there but for development freeCodeCamp is great for beginners and anyone looking to brush up on their knowledge and skills. As the platform grows, they've been adding a lot more information and courses such as Python and data structure. They also have an endless catalog on RUclips. I hope this helps!
Very informative, thank. I wanna do both for sure so call me a coding unicorn 🦄 😂😂. I love drawing and I’m an artist for sure. I’m also realizing how fun it is to code and develop these cool effects. Yeah, definitely doing both.
What I noticed is that, now, corps are trying to hire a designer (even a graphic designer) who can do developer work in order to save as much money as possible, and even these people who can do it all do NOT get paid enough. We definitely need huge striking and union action in the tech industry.
Thank you for this explanation! Super helpful. Question - if I’m a web designer, is it to be assumed that the “web development” part would be completed before they hire me? Or would that be something that comes afterwards?
Im really stuck on what to do, im a recent IT graduate with a focus on web dev and design. I like art and creativity but i like to build and code. If you ask me my favorite thing is to for example design a button but through more code and less drag n drop, ilike drag n drop when im tired of coding lol. However, i worry that as a front end dev you have no say in design at all. Or do you have a little design choice? I have small startup and while I've done some UX projects I have more experience i think in Development
I follow only one of designer I can think of at the moment. Charlie Marie TV. You can also search for designers here on RUclips depending on if you are interested in UX UI design, Graphic design, etc. Hope this helps!
I really want to do both, i'm more interested in designing to be honest but i want to be able to build a website by myself. I know there is AI for coding help now, i'm thinking if i should go a 2 year course, is it smart to do a designer course and learn coding myself? Or the other way around, what do you think. What would your recommendation be:)
Hey so glad I found your channel! I wanted to know if a front end web developer is basically the same as a web designer. Can these be used interchangeably?
Thank you! A web designer is different from a web developer. A developer usually receives the website design and structure from the designer. The developer is then responsible for bringing that design to life through code.
There is always usually something to work on. Wether you are developing, researching, updating and maintaining exciting projects, planning new projects, learning. It’s doesn’t really stop lol. Thanks for watching!!
Definitely want to become educated in both. So a coding unicorn 🦄 😂😂😂 I would love to learn to give both of my websites a serious makeover with user experience optimized. I would hope to be able to do this for others. I want to help design and develop the designs I help create.
hey all, so i am a student whos just entering into this tech field, i would really appreciate if someone dropped some resources or tips for me to get to know more. personally i feel i am leaning on the creative side ie web designing but would love to explore development too!
So if im doing my bachelor's in digital design while im learing my web development initials along side ,what kind of job there is for those who have mastered both .
Hey, I really enjoy your videos they're informative. I'm going through the Odin Project Curriculum but I'm also interested in UX/UI designer. Do you know any programs that is dedicated for UX/UI design that's similar to The Odin Project?
what if you want to develop but not work so much with code, like with website building software? I wanna know a little code, but nothing too complicated. is that a different job title or still developer?
Great question. If you're asking if you can get a job by not coding and just using a CMS like Wix, Squarespace, or Wordpress, I'd say it would have to be a really special case because being a web dev or engineer in the working field requires you know how to code and you'll be using those languages to build things. You could absolutely freelance and start your own business with little to no code using those site builders though. Hope this helps!
Imagine if every industry had equal poc and non poc and every household made the same $ and every person had the same health and everyone was so equal like the same number of hairs on their head and the same shoes and shirts
