Web designer must know how to code! Css and html should be knows perfectly. A truly web designer should know Javascript too(at least implementation) . Web developer needs to know a programming language and the integration with database.

I am a painter and Graphics designer. I am also an Art teacher. Via graphics, I do identity and branding, print and digital Marketing design e.g. Brochures and Magazines, Photo I high end retouching among others. I have never found something more important than converting my aesthetic/visual ideas into functional website. So I do all my preparation as designer in a sense that I need to get the right photos and color theme for the website, making sure that they will communicate the right message to the clients. And I make my ideas function by doing coding either in Notepad++ OR in Sublime text Hence a developer. I always want my website to appear responsive enough to much modern devices. Therefore it is hard to be one and not the other.
I have not yet opened one website of mine. I live in Uganda, Gulu district. I am still working as an Art teacher besides my graphics of which teaching is still taking much of my time. I will be much comfortable to real serious website when I resign from my current job and commit to my design work, may be soon or later. I love creating what makes me happy i.e. my design ideas. My contacts are kisimostev@gmail.com, ojok simon stephen on facebook and ojoksimonstephen7842 on instagram
Can you become a web designer with no previous experience in this field? I for one am an automotive engineer, I work like you said with the engine, but not design, rather "coding". It's called engine calibration. I don't like it though. I mean, do you need to have talent for drawing or anything to be a web designer? You know, like an artist/painter/singer...you get the idea. "Equipment" is spelled wrong in your description box. Does this mean I would be a better designer for noticing?
Thank you so much for this video, ever since I was in middle school I wanted to do graphic design. I love making digital art, logos, and simplistic things that also make you think. I’ve recently taken a web design class in high school, and I thought why not do both. I looked into it and I didn’t think I wanted to divest deep as web development. But all the other sources I looked at made it seem it was required. I know the basics pretty well, enough to get me through, but I really like focusing on the aesthetics. So thank you so much! This was so helpful! I’m going to pursue web design :)
Been really confused until now This was very helpful wish i had seen it before i started learning web development it would have made my life easier i guess 🤔 But then came the part where you like " i can explore both and decide which one it's more like me ❤ You examples are so easy to relate to Thanks for sharing
Excellent video brother, you made it simple to understand and interesting to watch. This video genuinely helped me find some guidance and I really appreciate that. Good luck to you man and I hope all is well
Bro, you’ve got this!! We all start in the very beginning. Keep learning and pushing yourself- one day you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come. Stoked for you and your journey!
Hi, thanks so much for the video. It's really helpful. I'm pursuing a career in design. What sort of things should I make? For example, for websites. How would I be able to share them with people if I create them from scratch on my computer?
You'll need to start with a hosting account and domain name. Upload your website to the hosting account and connect your domain to the hosting account. Then you can share the domain name on social media so people can see what you've created!
I do web design, I'm not too good with the developing part because my dyslexia really makes it difficult. But my business is growing and I'm going to need a web developer.
Congrats on your growing business, the best thing you can do is find a developer you can work with and trust and do multiple projects with them. Good luck 👍

I am a bit confused.. Since CSS is part of web development, it is not part of web design, right? Also, if you master CSS then how relevant is it even to learn web design, as CSS seems to cover all aspects of web design.
Hi, this is the first video I've seen from your channel. I am 18 years old, I am learning CSS and JavaScript, but I feel that I've started learning these things pretty late, so I was curious, when did you know what you wanted to do in the future ? What "school" should I choose to study at university if I want to become both a Web designer and a Web developer?
I want do web designer & developer because I like coding and design is for appearance I wanna create a new web site with my efforts nd hard work for my bestie.
It's better to know how to code cause you don't have to go to a bunch of other people to get something done for the client. It's not like you have to create new algorithms in C, just some basic coding.
Is it easy to work from home in these jobs? I would like a job I could eventually work from home because I want to be able to work a little when I do have kids.
Hello, Thank you for your very well detailed explanation of the two and their differences. I really appreciate that. Ive always knew but never in dept. I have done many web page designing and was always interested in developer side but never persued it. Anyway, I am trying to get back at it again and wanted to know if you have a Udemy course? If so, I would like to know how to access your course. Thank you again, have a nice day!
Lol, I still don't understand, when I design a website, I also add functionality to it, without that how will you see your work, on the page. So is this mean I am learning both web designing and development or just one?? , if one pls let me know which one. I think I am learning both as I am making the view of the website and even adding functionality to it. One more short question, don't we need to do those together, when we are writing code???
Hi from Portugal, Jesse! I really enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel. I'd like to ask you a question: Do you think it's harder for a person who learned by RUclips and online courses to get a job in this area than a person who has a degree from college? Is there this kind of prejudice in this area or the only thing that really matters to the employers is if you know how to do even if you don't have a degree?
I am a self-taught designer and developer and in my opinion, people care more about what you can do than what a piece of paper says. Just make sure you can do what you say you can and do it really well.
Thank you so much Jesse for making things much clearer, I like visual things and be creative and at the same time I would love to be a front-end developer. What would you suggest to study first if I had to choose between web design and front-end developer? Thank you so much and you earned my sub❤️❤️
I saw your video of why you shouldn't go to design school and It got me wondering if you actually went to college or had any form of vocational training. I'm a web design student at 2 yr college (less risk and no debt) and I just wanted to ask if you can make a video on your journey of how you got into graphic/ print design and transitioned to web design in your own journey. And how you managed to make a portfolio and land a job in both (assuming you didn't go to college). I am a firm believer of teaching your self things as way of proven motivation however when I search for job listings and internships, many say require bachelors degree of some sort? -Really great content by the way!
Thanks for the encouragement, super happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. I did go to college but only after I had already been working in the industry. That's why I'm of the "don't go to design school" opinion... because it was not a productive use of my time or money. Making a video on my journey is a great idea, I'll put in the queue of videos to make. In a nutshell, I started out making band flyers. then got an internship at my church, then did a mentorship with a friend who is an awesome designer, then got my first full-time job, then freelanced then a design agency, now a startup and freelance. It's a been a while ride. Start making things that excite you, and learn by doing. Stay at it man, nothing good comes without hard work 🤘
Great video! Quick question would you say that for either Web Des or Web Dev it's best to be a mathematically inclined person? Do these careers take a lot of knowledge of gmtry, Algebra etc? Thanks
A good grasp on math would help development (computer science utilizes a lot of math) design also uses math but it’s not as heavily needed. I think both require a dedication more than anything.
Hi Jesse, what would you recommend to people who want to go into web design but don't want to do multiple years of schooling? Is schooling recommended or are there less expensive ways to get the skills needed?

I studied architecture in college and in a way, I find myself super interested in both dev and design, somehow I feel my discipline has a very large role to play in that because I've been taught to design with the end game of solving problems, so the end part of your video really resonated with me... I WAS that kid that took the remote apart btw. Thank you so much for this video. ☺☺

What kind of education is needed for a job in web design? How about for web development? Is a bachelor's degree the bare minimum required or is an associate's degree sufficient? My friend is convinced that a bachelor's degree is a waste of time and money for these careers. Thoughts?
What's the name for someone who does both? I also do PHP, Graphic Design, Video Production, Photography, SEO, Sound Design, Audio Mixing, Mastering, Song Writing, Composition, Vocals, Guitar, Bass and Drums and made good money from all of them, should I just refer to myself as a Creative Agency? I would say no. Colleges should be able to take you from the very beginning into more a more skilled design the more you go, as is with other things with college. But you can do it without shelling out so much.

Twelve years ago when I started in this industry, there was only a Web Designer or Developer....and the web designer would do all the frontend code too. The developer would be doing all the PHP/.NET.....building custom CMS's and shopping carts. Vanilla JS wasn't even a thing back then....jQuery was just starting to become the next big thing and that's all you needed to know. Now look at the state of industry!! There's more job titles and frameworks than I've had hot dinners...so just take your pick!!

@Trinitrophenylnitramine yes i did some coding in college too..but if youre applying for a job theyll be asking you more coding skills...but in the end i knda like coding....been scratching js for a while

Dude! this video really helped me to take the right choice! I am studying programming and I am like bored every single day, I mean, codes work for me, but I am more a "visual" person, probably I discovered a new way to follow with web design, again, thank you!
That's awesome
I have designed my first website, like to learn both for sure! ( BTW. is on my channel... would like to hear some opinions.... )
Being a creative guy my whole life I really like the aspect to design my website the way I want.
But I think learning both will give me the Independence I am looking for at the end.
Anway great video!
Advise me, I'm a designer, primarily in graphic design and motion design, some clients keep on asking me whether I deal with web design as well... would you advise me to venture into it as well?
Thank you for taking the time to delve into these two paths. Trying to figure out where I fit between design and development, and your thoughts were very helpful!
Kindly tell me....I know Html, css, photoshop,Illustrator and corel draw. Can I become a graphic designer or web designer?
This is one of my favorite videos yet. Thanks for always dropping awesome content. We'd love to get you back on our podcast sometime! 👍👍
Love to, anytime guys
Web designer must know how to code! Css and html should be knows perfectly. A truly web designer should know Javascript too(at least implementation) . Web developer needs to know a programming language and the integration with database.
Hey, thanks for this video. I was wondering if you made sure to learn data structures and algorithms before becoming a web developer? Is it something you recommend for me to learn?
I am a front end guy so data structures and algorithms aren’t my thing
thank you. it helps me a lot cuz I just interested in learning web development. watching a few videos about web development, but couldn't find a real answer, but your videos help me. thank you so much
So glad I was able to help out!
I'm doing #Both and it's Very Fine for #Me
Glad to hear it 👍🏼
How can I know if web design is a good fit if I've never done it before. Can it be self taught or do you have to go to school for it? Or just take a course?
ruclips.net/video/0oCITNwKpqk/видео.html
I just stumbled on your channel and it's great, clear explanations and not boring at all, keep it up. :)
Thanks so much, more coming soon
I know one thing. Its imposible for you to answer almost every question in the comments ..Thats why you used your web development skills... you know whar am seinn..... ;-)
Not sure what this means
I'm a guy who loves to solve how the engine works.😁
Please sir how much will it cost me to become a Web designer and what are the necessary materials needed for a starting
Great points
I am Happy to know that
Brother where do you live? And do you have a website I can check your work please?! Looking for someone for a serious project! Let me know. Blessings!
You can see my website at jesseshowalter.com and contact me there
Can you become a web designer with no previous experience in this field? I for one am an automotive engineer, I work like you said with the engine, but not design, rather "coding". It's called engine calibration. I don't like it though.
I mean, do you need to have talent for drawing or anything to be a web designer? You know, like an artist/painter/singer...you get the idea.
"Equipment" is spelled wrong in your description box. Does this mean I would be a better designer for noticing?
Design isn’t art, it’s a way of thinking that helps you solve problems. Anyone can learn it
Be designer that know how to code.
Thats a good plan
how about a coder that knows how to design?
Not developer because developer develop things.not designer I'm not sure. Working missing my talent life because lack of problem.
I love your write up
I wanna become fully web developer
Been really confused until now
This was very helpful wish i had seen it before i started learning web development it would have made my life easier i guess 🤔
But then came the part where you like " i can explore both and decide which one it's more like me ❤
You examples are so easy to relate to
Thanks for sharing
Never too late
Brother love from Pakistan ❤
I loved your words
Development lost me at Javascript programming. Designer it is.
Yeah!! Go make rad things!
this is actually so inspiring.
makes me hungry for the job
keep it up! :D
Awesome 👍🏼
Excellent video brother, you made it simple to understand and interesting to watch. This video genuinely helped me find some guidance and I really appreciate that. Good luck to you man and I hope all is well
I am a web designer and web developer, so it is best to be both
Do what you love.
bro I'm just getting started learning about this job. I really have no idea about this but im willing to learn. Thank you this very helpful
Bro, you’ve got this!! We all start in the very beginning. Keep learning and pushing yourself- one day you’ll look back and see how far you’ve come. Stoked for you and your journey!

Your so welcome
Hi, thanks so much for the video. It's really helpful. I'm pursuing a career in design. What sort of things should I make? For example, for websites. How would I be able to share them with people if I create them from scratch on my computer?
You'll need to start with a hosting account and domain name. Upload your website to the hosting account and connect your domain to the hosting account. Then you can share the domain name on social media so people can see what you've created!
Thanks, Jesse for the encouraging, informative breakdown, looking forward to having my new career!
Thanks so much!
I do web design, I'm not too good with the developing part because my dyslexia really makes it difficult. But my business is growing and I'm going to need a web developer.
Congrats on your growing business, the best thing you can do is find a developer you can work with and trust and do multiple projects with them. Good luck 👍
Well I guess web dev is right for me since I learned HTML CSS and currently learns java
TRK_ DAS javascript?
you know java or java script, two completely different things
ItzGeigger ik I was just asking if he meant javascript cuz he mentioned html css and to complete that he needs js anybody up to be my html css teacher pls I suck at self learning
I have a degree in business management, but i always interested in becoming a web designer, i can use the computer very well, could some tell me where can i start my journey through becoming a professional website designer 🙏🙏

Thanks a lot dude..💞.Really loved it..I am a developer.. Now I want to know about the designing techniques too😊
Awesome 👍🏼
colors man it's about them colors..... ohh yah and flow too can't forget about that flow!
Its basically the Civil engineer and Architect of the web world
Superb video. Last bit really resonated with me.
Thanks for sharing your insight.
+Digitally Perry thanks for watching man, I'm glad it was a help to you. Let me know if there is anything else I can cover that would be helpful
😊
Why does your white balance keep changing? Good details. Don't use vertical text.
Hey! Thanks so much for the feedback, have a super day!
When I create a web, either design or develop, do I have to do web hosting as well?
You have to get it hosted but you dont have to do it your self.
@@JesseShowalter thank you for your response.
no problem
How about clients that think that the Web Designer will code, some clientes don't know that who make the coding process is the Web Developer.
You need to be an educator as well as a designer!
WOW!! This is really helpful!! Thank you so much for sharing this information with us :D
Thank you for your explain now I have got a real decision .
I am Creative as well as curious.... And I've decided to become an ultimate web designer and developer.
Go for it 👍
I am a bit confused..
I didn't know what I wanted to do until I was 25. Go to a school that will challenge you but don't go into massive debt for it.
@@JesseShowalter thank you for the advice!

I want do web designer & developer because I like coding and design is for appearance I wanna create a new web site with my efforts nd hard work for my bestie.
Go get em! 🤘
It's better to know how to code cause you don't have to go to a bunch of other people to get something done for the client. It's not like you have to create new algorithms in C, just some basic coding.
Both are great skillsets to pursue!
Is it easy to work from home in these jobs? I would like a job I could eventually work from home because I want to be able to work a little when I do have kids.
Yes for sure. Remote work is on the rise for dev and design
Client side aka Front-end Development
I am just not sure if I will be college dropout, and I really want to get good at something like. but i am not sure where to start.
Start by doing. You gotta explore the space before you can be sure it's for you
Loved it! Helpful and informative! ☺
Im doing both and it's very fine for me
right on!
That is what I want to do. 😊
Linnaia Crist you can start with the design first which is the right thing then move slowly to development
Lol, I still don't understand, when I design a website, I also add functionality to it, without that how will you see your work, on the page. So is this mean I am learning both web designing and development or just one?? , if one pls let me know which one.
I think I am learning both as I am making the view of the website and even adding functionality to it.
One more short question, don't we need to do those together, when we are writing code???
mohammed mohsen i also want to do is it possible in company or freelancing?
thank you so much for wonderfull message i got a clear mind what i want to be soon.
Yes! So stoked for you, Rejean! You’ve got this!
Jesse Showalter , thanks a lot!
+cariocavampira 👍🏼
Great video. Thanks for sharing valuable information in video. Keep sharing.
goo.gl/5a3rq3
That's reassuring Jesse, thanks
Stay at it man, nothing good comes without hard work 🤘
Which church do you go?
Rohjesei hey....
I wanna learn about website design can u plzzz help me
Great video!
I think both require a dedication more than anything.
any recommendations on specific online courses on learning both?
Coming soon
Hi Jesse, what would you recommend to people who want to go into web design but don't want to do multiple years of schooling? Is schooling recommended or are there less expensive ways to get the skills needed?
ruclips.net/video/-PvaID4XP3I/видео.html
I agree that schooling isn’t necessarily important, I didn’t go that route and have found through trial and error, success.
Jesse Showalter, forgot Perl, again - one of the most used languages for any developement, including the web developement.
lol not sure if this is a joke or not
Hi, how can I overcome fears of working as a web/graphic designer in companies? btw maybe you can make video about that
What specific fears?
@@JesseShowalter probably failure, not being able to complete tasks
Great video dude ! i seriously thought web designer / developer were the same thing till i watched this and you broke it down and explained extremely well , can you also make another video explaining what is Front end , back end and full stack web designer/ developer ? i would really appreciated it man Thanks in advance
+JoHnJoHn I am going to do similar videos for front end vs backend, and UX vs UI
Hi Jesse, I'm Vanessa from Nigeria and I have to say I LOVE THIS Video because I've been so confused on which to begin... You basically just explained away my confusion.
+Vanessa Christian you have such a cool story! It just goes to show that no matter what field your in problems always need solving. So glad that the video was a help 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
What kind of education is needed for a job in web design? How about for web development? Is a bachelor's degree the bare minimum required or is an associate's degree sufficient? My friend is convinced that a bachelor's degree is a waste of time and money for these careers. Thoughts?
I wanna know this too, some people are up with education some not
You could learn right now for free on free code camp, both design and dev take time and effort but don't require a degree.
LMAO
It's called a unicorn 🦄
dude..I want to study web designer..It is useful to support my career..
i have a question. do you need to have any past experience to go into a community college for web design?
I would say no. Colleges should be able to take you from the very beginning into more a more skilled design the more you go, as is with other things with college. But you can do it without shelling out so much.
As you said you are doing Interface designing, Experience design and Front end ....I want to know what technologies or languages you learnt... Because I'm interested in designing ...Please reply ASAP
HTML, CSS, and Javascript
Twelve years ago when I started in this industry, there was only a Web Designer or Developer....and the web designer would do all the frontend code too. The developer would be doing all the PHP/.NET.....building custom CMS's and shopping carts. Vanilla JS wasn't even a thing back then....jQuery was just starting to become the next big thing and that's all you needed to know. Now look at the state of industry!! There's more job titles and frameworks than I've had hot dinners...so just take your pick!!
We’ve all come such a long way! Thanks so much for your insight, I appreciate you! 🤘
Always remember to repent of your sins (sin is transgression of YAHUAH The Father In Heaven’s LAW: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy) And Have Belief On Yahusha The Messiah. HE Died and Rose three days later so that you can be forgiven of your sins!
HE Loves you! Come to HIM🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Hi Jesse. I'm so inspired by your video! I have been doing research in grad school(electrical engineer) in my last school year. I'm not in CS or Software engineer side, but really want to do a project and to start with trying this career. I think I'm kinda voting both, and not sure if it's ok to start now. And I ve read some articles mentioning that python has been using in advanced web design/development , and I'd like to dive more into it, and not sure if I can make it with spending 4 hours per day on learning this stuffs. thanks for your video and sort of convince me to try both at first and see how it goes
It's never to late to start. dive in and give it a shot. you might fall in love with it.
