Thanks, Wes, for another great video. I write copy for websites, and I always meet with my clients to get their "vibe" before I start creating. I love meeting them and getting them excited about their new website.
Personally. There are student web designers who would do a wayyyy better job for half the price. The website was almost stock, therefore I would expect it to look nice. Instead, spacing and colour choices were poor at best.
I appreciate this video. Shows how freelance platforms will give badges to those who don't necessarily fit the criteria.. there are some good ones, just have to vet carefully
Great story telling. I think what I learned is from this video is that it is better to hire a pro, like you who can help to finish all the things related to a website instead of working with this one and that one and that one.
Thanks Saro! I think it really just goes to show that you need to have a good understanding of what you need your website to be before you start a project like this. I actually think theres nothing wrong with hiring a copywriter and designer separately, its more just knowing what to ASK for that helps the most.
Thank you for choosing us, Wes, we really appreciate it so much and so do our bees. I loved the writing and found it quirky. This video is wonderful! Sweetly, Betsy
Question: when hiring a website designer- I would expect them to be the expert and provide guidance on creativity, photos used and content. Is that too much? Or should we just expect them to handle just the technicality of the site? TIA
Great video! Do you need a copywriter? I thought that the website developer would add all of the details to the website them selves if you tell them what to put
Just that little bit you read sounds a lot like chat GPT...nothing wrong with that but it explains the surprisingly good copy... Also, from my experience, conducting this experiment on Upwork would produce a top tier result and a way more consultative design process...for FAR less $$$.
I have a Listing Pro (registry) Web Site I had a guy start for me a couple of years ago and didn't finish for me, I actually lost money. What to do next?
Great video, Wes, but please, don't contribute to something that is already a serious issue for visual communicators: the mistaking of graphic designers for software operators. A Graphic Designer IS a communicator whose career is, pretty much, all about that: linguistics, rhetoric, semantics and semiotics alongside with a lot of cognitive ergonomics and professional projects' management. You don't need a separate copywritter, you just need a real Graphic Designer -which will be actually way better since your copywritter has no clue at all of how the website flow will be, where and how the words will compliment graphic elements and whether the navigation possibilities would affect the continuity of those texts-. So, instead of hiring a copywritter and a wordpress/photoshop/illustrator user, the ideal thing would have been to hire a real Graphic Designer (some prefer to call themselves "Visual Communicators" to make a distinction that shouldn't even exist, in the first place). To sum it up; handling a scalpel doesn't make anyone a surgeon. The same applies to Graphic Design.
oh man i ran probably more than 50 different projects in last 1.5 years in area of web and app development. Even when i deliver highly detailed documents where i literally explain dev in their language what to do make and what actions to call they keep doing what they want. Some are delivering like 20% of work done and trying to deplete you of revisions in order to charge more in total by demanding you to buy more revisions... Best of all are this resellers and self proclaimed project managers hiding under disguise of Developer doing drop servicing and literally consume all your time and do not even deliver what is needed because their inability to communicate right way to their seller. Overall very unsatisfied, except with couple great sellers there when it comes to area of web dev and app dev.
Wes, if you would've gone for Pakistani Fiverr freelancers, trust me the UI they do is astonishing. Whereas, this site doesn't look like someone spent $500 to make it. Copywriting seemed very costly, even though I'm not from Pakistan, I love the work they do and trust me, honestly, you could've done all this 10 times better for only something around $700 - $900 instead of spending $1535 on this project. It seems like a daylight robbery to me (no disrespect to anyone involved)
Even after revision, the design still sucks. The font size for headlines and body text should be at least twice as large, and all the text should be half as long. A page like this won't convert well. I can't recall seeing a clear call to action. So, I have to ask: why didn't Wes McDowell, who calls himself a website strategy expert, and sells consultancy services, see these flaws and come up with a better website design? I feel sorry for the bees. As for me, I design my websites myself and won't waste my money on Fiverr or McDowell's services.
@@WesMcDowellInc Then your video is pointless. You create and test websites, that is what you sell, and I wouldn't buy it because you obviously are incompetent.😜
The final design is awful especially the typography and the weight of the text blocks, headlines.

Hey Tracy, yea you kinda have to, right? I was surprised that this didn't come with that, or at least a more detailed questionaire!
Personally. There are student web designers who would do a wayyyy better job for half the price.

where can I find these student designers?

Great in depth video Wes! 👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it! 🙌 🙌
Checked their site one year later. Looks like they didnt use the new website. Also this video made me understand how much copywriters earn, crazy...
Are they still doing revisions? I went to this site and it is not what was showed here.

Thank you for doing this! Great info here
My pleasure Nick! 👍😀

Interesting Video Wes. Good Points / Good Information 🐾👍✔️
Thanks! 😃

That was my first though! It’s so GPT style.
What about doing this test on behance?? I find it easier to find someone based on branding idea
Do they have a hiring platform similar to fiverr? If so I might to a comparison video at some point!
@@WesMcDowellInc they have a hiring section and you have to message the person. Not sure on the process since i havent hired anyone directly yet
That copy was SO chatgpt though.. and they made a thousand bucks off of that ... Crazy
To add to "What you could have done differently" - I would ask to see examples of sites they created. ..
Curious to know why their old site is still up? Did they not like your site. I thought your site was beautiful. Very simple yet easy to understand.
Thank you! Not really sure, they definitely had the option!
Wow great video!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed :)
Do they connect your domain for you?
I think you did exactly dropservicing
Brilliant ❤❤❤
Thanks Nathan! 😊🙌

Get someone else to do it. 🤷🏼♂️
Has it been completed?
How about you showed what you would have built instead?
Sorry videos already made lol
@@WesMcDowellInc Next time ;)

Graphic designers aren’t usually copywriters. There are obviously exceptions to that tho

The experiment in the video was to see if hiring the top rated pros would get the best result. Obviously the answer is no 😂
Wow reading this as a Pakistani.. 🇵🇰✨
Do you have someone you recommend
The designer looked like he used a template. I could have made a better version
What’s your fiver @??

Bc that wasn’t the point of the video. And no worries, I don’t offer design services 😜

Can you help me with my website? And guide me through the process?
That’s what my channels all about!
Awesome! Do you offer one on one consultations? If so, where do I sign up?
Hey Robin 👋 - to book one, head here: wesmcdowell.com/private-coaching-consultations/
You totally wasted 550 dollars for the design
No worries it was just an experiment 😎
Websites these days are just pre-made blocks
