Pete Willis. Pete Willis. Pete Willis. Is all I got to say. Pete your fans are still thinking about you and hope you're well. Aside from being the Def Leppard founder, you and Steve were at the core. Hope the other guys have enough sense someday to call an old friend. You play ever again, I'm paying to see that.
Lady Strange is completely transformed here. Even the crappy VHS audio can pick up how heavy it sounded live. Must have been frickn amazing live. Leppard with Pete Willis was the real deal.
Live footage of live pre-"Pyromania" Leppard is extremely scarce and I've been hitting up RUclips at least once a year to see if anything new from that era has popped up. Today, not only did I come across a killer find... but I'm from Fresno. BIG THUMBS UP AND THANK YOU.
LOL.... Hysteria sold diamond...... This whole mentality of "they were better then/now" is so pathetically immature. Def Leppard is like Queen, they evolved as only the good bands do. People stuck in only one era of music (or more specifically one era of one bands music) are just so......boring.🙄
I was there in the front row for this show. Totally there to see Pat Travers. I took a number of photos of both bands that night. A very young Def Leppard opened this show. Joe Elliot was drinking Blue Nun wine that night. Nut sure why, maybe someone gave them a free bottle.
meankev Pat Travers has always been a fav...and this was during his peak. Badass band. Blue Nun was really popular back then.....and Leppard boys were only teenagers. I saw them later on High N Dry.
I too was at this show, and was born and raised in Fresno. Now i want somebody to find the footage from when Ozzy played here with Randy Rhodes. I was at that show too!
Just saw Def Leppard last weekend. Such an amazing show. And during the encore they put all the old pics of the band. So many of Steve Clark, it was touching and made me cry!!
thank you for this video my friend. there's just not enough live footage from back then. the late 70's & early 80's were a magical time only those who saw can understand and appreciate ...if I could have only seen some Black Sabbath shows from back then
I saw them four day's after this in Sacramento, CA. They opened for Pat Travers. Def Leppard was good just starting out I had heard the first album already. And as I'm watching its Pat Travers own Pat Thrall and Tommy Aldridge kicking ass. I loved that line up that band in my opinion was one of the best ever.
i saw def leppard open up for ozzy in 1981. leppard was great, and so was randy rhoades. i went to school the next day with my def leppard t-shirt. big letters said high and dry on the back.my ozzy shirt said, an evening with the metal maniac 1981. i was going to a concert a week back then, everyone was on tour, i saw almost everyone. 80s kicked ass.
I was just watching him solo and thought he was Tommy Aldridge... I could say the solo also sounds a lot like Tommy's on the Randy Rhoads tribute.. But this was before that.
Without Pete Willis this band wouldn't exist . Best lineup ever sad that how they got rid of him . They all had the same dream and he wasn't the only one with alcohol problems why didn't any other member got fired just saying reality check Pete Willis worked on the first 3 albums which are my favorite long live Pete Willis !
well the others just drank to have fun, pete relied on it to function. pete got so drunk even before concerts he couldn’t even play. the rest of them knew to only drink after shows so it didn’t hinder their performance, versus pete getting so drunk before concerts he couldn’t even hold his guitar. that’s why they fired him, bc he didn’t take his job serious
Thank you for this upload .... classic DL with Clark and Willis ..Joe Elliott's early vocals are amazing ...these guys were so young here ...Joe would have been 22 ..Steve , Sav and Pete probably around the same. .Rick Allen would of been maybe 18 or 19
Wow...I was totally into Pat Travers at the time and saw this show when it came to Oakland, CA. Yes, rare video of Def Leppard, but even more rare of this lineup of the Pat Travers Band at their peak. Nice surprise! There's not much out there. If someone has the video of the full show, they should definitely post it if they can. There's tons of die hard, early 80s Travers fans out there that would greatly appreciate it.
Yeah, I saw the beginning of that footage, and at first I was like, "wait... Pat Thrall got up on stage with Def Leppard... to play 'Hammerhead'???" And then I realized that it had shifted to footage of Travers' band.
Interesting how fast tempo they played Wasted, kinda punk style. 5 young lads from Sheffeild living their dream. They didn't know their future would be Bringin on the Heartbreak. RIP Steve Clark
So many what ifs... What if they kept Pete Willis. What if Rick Allen didn't lose his arm. What if Steve Clark lived... How would the music sound like after Pyromania?
I was born in 81 and I remember listening Def Leppard since 87...this is a jewel!!! Steve Clark is the reason why I started to play guitar when I was 11 years old! I went to their concert last Saturday and I'm waiting already for the next gig!! \m/ By the way, what's the band at the end of the video? That drummer kicked ass!!!
I've been looking for a live DL Lady Strange all over thx. At the end there that Pat Travis Band I know cause I saw DL many times SAT but also saw PTB Salt & Whisky is Pat Travis..Boom Boom out go the lights..
@nealywarner: the third band is Pat Travers Band, and the drummer is none other than Tommy Aldridge! Also featured is guitarist Pat Thrall, who was nothing short of amazing.
I was a huge fan though their 3rd album after Pete left I didn’t care for their sound anymore, I’m just glad I got to see them open for Ozzy in 1979 they were so young and so awesome ….👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm hoping that in 2027, they make an effort to meet up with Willis to commemorate the band's 50th year anniversary. It would be great. I know that he'd given up on music and doing property management now but I hope for the slim chance of rockin' with the boys one last time and play their classics. Too much to ask for I know.
Before the hitting the big time. You can see and hear the early genius of the late, great Steve Clark. Wait! Does Joe Elliot have satin disco pants on?!
Very nice to se the founder Pete Willis. The band was so good when he was in. Good songvriter and guitarist. In my opinion they did a big mistake when they fired him from his own band!? He drank..and? The whole band was drunks! And he is still alive compared to others sorry to say.
Bahahahahahaha.....Pat Travers back then , on stage, probably blew Leppard off the stage !!!!...you are talking through your ass.....Pat Travers as a guitar player and a singer is hands down more superior than Joe Elliot and Steve and Pete !!!!!
Pistol Pete Willis and Steamin Steve Clark together gave Leppard the metal sound, but still maintained the blues effect. Its awful that Pete got into what he did. How could one band experience so much tragedy????? Ive been apart of a group of individuals that came together with tremendous talent, and looking back it was so so special. I can certainly understand how these guys would bump heads, and with the coin they had, find trouble. God they were great. Same age group too.
Lady Strange, rock brigade, me and my wine......these songs were so raw, melodic, awesome and all DEF LEP I too thinks it's sad they don't have the fond memories they gave us
That would be a very epic thing to have witnessed, it's a shame I wasn't alive to see that as well... Oh well! I'll just enjoy this video and get what I can out of it :)
Pete Willis. Pete Willis. Pete Willis. Is all I got to say. Pete your fans are still thinking about you and hope you're well. Aside from being the Def Leppard founder, you and Steve were at the core. Lady Strange is completely transformed here. Even the crappy VHS audio can pick up how heavy it sounded live. Must have been frickn amazing live. Leppard with Pete Willis was the real deal.
I totally agree with you
THIS was the classic line up.
Ok but can he beat Goku though?
Yes it was a treat with Pete and Clark in Davenport Iowa front row age 16
Steve Clarke is on fire on this video. What a great player. They all rocked and incredibly so for their young age.
Not disparaging the band today, but this is the only Def Leppard I ever saw live.
I don't listen to Def Leppard that often, but when I do, Pete Willis is on guitar.
I was there! 1980, Portland, Oregon. DL opened for Pat Travers Band. DL blew us all away! 🇺🇲
This was only part of this show, the full length one was taken down two weeks after being posted.
@kirkleroy988 that's so annoying! Why did they remove it? How can I find the full show?
Saw them on the High-n-Dry tour '81, I was hooked!
deucesolo That's awesome!! 😎🤘
Pour some sugar on that. Way better than today's girl band. Even Joe sang back then. Miss this line up
Agreed wholeheartedly.
Without Steve they suck they are pop now
TRUTH!!!!!!
LOL.... Hysteria sold diamond...... This whole mentality of "they were better then/now" is so pathetically immature. Def Leppard is like Queen, they evolved as only the good bands do. People stuck in only one era of music (or more specifically one era of one bands music) are just so......boring.🙄
High & Dry, to me is still their best album.
Steve Clark and Pete Willis! Can’t be beat!! What a power house.
Great early Leppard footage. Would've loved to see them in '80 or '81.
Imo the ultimate lineup for this band 🤘🏻
some great guitar work & songs !!!
So awesome you were able to photo them back then.
Saw them in England 81,drank beer with em AND bullshitted..just boys then.
I was there at Warner theater they open pat travers on boom boom out light tour
haha Blue Nun was good! I was 100 miles away from Fresno and didn't know, that really sucks!
Was a big Travers fan but went to this show to just see Def Leppard.
I saw them on this tour. In Syracuse, NY. They opened for Judas Priest, and just blew the roof off the place.
When I listen to Pete Willis so do all my neighbors!!!!
I too was at this show, and was born and raised in Fresno.
Now i want somebody to find the footage from when Ozzy played here with Randy Rhodes. I was at that show too!
A very hungry Def Leppard
i wish they were hungry now
Release this stuff Joe. You're such a control freak!
PETE WILLIS - love his playing!
Takes me back to hearing Wasted for the first time. Raw and awesome.
Just saw Def Leppard last weekend. Such an amazing show. And during the encore they put all the old pics of the band. So many of Steve Clark, it was touching and made me cry!!
THE MOST NOTORIOUS THING FOR ME IS TOM ALDRIDGE on the drums with DLeppard! Never spected for it👀‼️
That’s Tommy playing with Pat Travers 😎
Steve Steaming Clarke loved his playing style
wasted is prob one of the best songs they ever did, its pure gold
I totally agree.
No fuckin' doubt plus fuckin' "Overture" and "satellite"
@@snakepitguysorrow is a woman is also great. The list goes on.
High and Dry and Pyromania were my favorite albums.
The Leppard boys were just kids back then! I saw them on High n Dry and they were already rock stars....and stiff teenagers. But so were we...lol
thank you for this video my friend. there's just not enough live footage from back then. the late 70's & early 80's were a magical time only those who saw can understand and appreciate ...if I could have only seen some Black Sabbath shows from back then

corvettebmw Very cool - hard to believe Randy Rhoads was real and people actually saw him in the flesh.
Boiler Room Drums So true.
Man, I envy you. This was the best time period for heavy rock, imho.
First gig I attended ...Manchester Apollo. Couldn't believe the wall of sound....even managed to catch a drum stick from Rick Allen at the end !
When Rick Allen was only 16 (or less) years in age, he knew how to ROCK!!
I was just watching him solo and thought he was Tommy Aldridge... I could say the solo also sounds a lot like Tommy's on the Randy Rhoads tribute.. But this was before that.
@@Fiendstein That "IS" Tommy Aldridge... They opened for Pat Travers at this show and around 6:10 is the Travers footage.
Elliot+Clark+Savage+Allen+Willis = Classic Line-up
They were beats! I look at what they became and they aren’t even close to this in terms of pure raw musicianship
They became legends after this.
Pistol Pete Willis rocks'!
The brilliant Steve Clark, never forgotten, always loved.
Ironically, my alcohol problems started when Pete Willis left the band.
well the others just drank to have fun, pete relied on it to function. pete got so drunk even before concerts he couldn’t even play. the rest of them knew to only drink after shows so it didn’t hinder their performance, versus pete getting so drunk before concerts he couldn’t even hold his guitar. that’s why they fired him, bc he didn’t take his job serious
your right Statismisbad, the early days of Leppard were the best as they were really rockin it.
Thank you for this upload .... classic DL with Clark and Willis ..Joe Elliott's early vocals are amazing ...these guys were so young here ...Joe would have been 22 ..Steve , Sav and Pete probably around the same. .Rick Allen would of been maybe 18 or 19
Even younger. Turning 17 that year.
I first discovered Leppard on the high and dry album, but didn’t see them in concert until pyro. I so miss good music, those were the days.
Wow...I was totally into Pat Travers at the time and saw this show when it came to Oakland, CA. Yes, rare video of Def Leppard, but even more rare of this lineup of the Pat Travers Band at their peak. Nice surprise! There's not much out there. Silver Tuna Yes....this was the Live Go for what you Know lineup I'm pretty sure. They were peaking at this time.
Yeah, I saw the beginning of that footage, and at first I was like, "wait... Pat Thrall got up on stage with Def Leppard... to play 'Hammerhead'???" And then I realized that it had shifted to footage of Travers' band.
Love early Def Leppard! Thanks for the post!
Thank you for recommending this I really appreciate it. :)
Awesome. Thanks so much for posting this.
"Wasted"....SUCH A KILLER song!!!!! That fuckin' main riff is just outstanding
Interesting how fast tempo they played Wasted, kinda punk style. 5 young lads from Sheffeild living their dream. They didn't know their future would be Bringin on the Heartbreak. RIP Steve Clark
Don’t forget they were still teenagers Allen 16, Sav 17, Steve and Pete 18, Joe 19. What other bands that young were signed at that age???
Incredible. Thanks so much!
So many what ifs... What if they kept Pete Willis. What if Rick Allen didn't lose his arm. What if Steve Clark lived... How would the music sound like after Pyromania?
cool live video footage of the original def leppard.
This is footage of the “On through the night tour 1980 I was at the show in Portland Oregon.
Amazin Steve!
I Was There At This Show From Montana
they played this song same time frame in Detroit Cobo Hall, I was there!
Pete Willis and Steve Clark, Classic Leppard ready to burn the house with those two fiery guitars..and drum....
That was sweet!!! Great upload man!!!
I was born in 81 and I remember listening Def Leppard since 87...this is a jewel!!! Steve Clark is the reason why I started to play guitar when I was 11 years old! These guys are so talented 😍 it's Scary!!! They decided that they were not gonna be factory workers ,etc etc. And the rest as they say is HISTORY!!!
Don’t forget they were still teenagers Allen 16, Sav 17, Steve and Pete 18, Joe 19. What other bands that young were signed at that age???
Wow apparently they opened for Pat Travers who has been my idol for years what a great show this must have been 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Wow!! This is an amazing video!!! Thankz!!!
Tommy Aldridge and Pat Thrall killing it w Pat Travers Band
What a gem! Thank you for sharing 👍🤙
@nealywarner: the third band is Pat Travers Band, and the drummer is

i agree. i did see them in 1981 open up for ozzy. great show. pete willis was there along with randy rhoades.

I surely enjoyed the harder edge and sound to early Leppard. Classic
I saw them for the 1st time right around 80-81..they were a warm up for Blackfoot...amazing, yes they were
Agreed. PRICELESS!!
FUCKIN' AWESOME! Thanks for upload this live version from Lady Strange before H'n'D!Hugs from Evandro Sant'Anna, Brazil.
This is amazinggg.
Don’t forget they were still teenagers Allen 16, Sav 17, Steve and Pete 18, Joe 19. What other bands that young were signed at that age???
Joe was born in 59' ...he's 21 here ..Sav, Steve and Pete are all close in age ...Rick Allen is probably just 17 close to 18 ...he was born in 63'
Hey that's Tommy A on the drum solo for PT. Pretty cool recognize his style anywhere
I thought that was him !!! I was thinking that wasn't the dude from Def Leppard .
Tommy Aldridge played for Def Leppard??
Awesome super rare footage, thanks for sharing!
this is very high quality for a raw rock show, but hey Tommy holding it all tight is the difference
Wow I was 16 when this hit....so long ago....
MAN WHAT A FIND DEF LEPPARD AND PAT TRAVERS WITH TOMMY ALRIDGE SOLO THANKS FOR THIS FOOTAGE MAN

To give you perspective. The band was the same age as One Direction, and the girls had as much of a fever over them as they did 1D later on.
yep! and I was one of them! LOL I miss the 70's and 80's so much
PRICELESS!
I witnessed Def Leppard Blow Pat Travers off the stage that year in Portland !
Same thing happened in Oakland!
@Garegh62 because you're so defensive. They probably did blow him off the stage.
@Garegh62 Pat Travers sucked in concert!!!!
🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕
Bahahahahahaha.....Pat Travers back then , on stage, probably blew Leppard off the stage !!!!...you are talking through your ass.....Pat Travers as a guitar player and a singer is hands down more superior than Joe Elliot and Steve and Pete !!!!!

wow. Rare stuff here. Thanks!
. Back when they were still a rock band.
Pete Willis was great! Rick played drums like beast! They were a machine here.
Lady Strange, rock brigade, me and my wine......these songs were so raw, melodic, awesome and all DEF LEP I too thinks it's sad they don't have the fond memories they gave us
PRICELESS
What's the band that starts at 6:09? That's not Def Leppard. It seems to be Tommy Aldridge on the drums.
Jimmy and the Misfits...1978-82...I think Mutt is their promoter at the time? they where to be England's Van Halen....But Nope
Good Stuff ... back before Mutt got ahold of them. Great Rock Band with a damn fine raw first album to prove it.
That would be a very epic thing to have witnessed, it's a shame I wasn't alive to see that as well... Oh well! I'll just enjoy this video and get what I can out of it :)
my first def lep gig!! 44 years ago 2night...7-5-80, jax fla they blew Ted Nugent away....Totally 4 sure
Yes, very rare
Tommy Aldridge tearin it up before joining Ozzy & Randy!!
