- James Taylor and Alison Krauss pay tribute to Paul Simon at the 2002 Kennedy Centre Honours tribute to Paul Simon. The truncted version of the song is typical of the Kennedy Centre Honours...
Two of my favourite singers paying tribute to my 'absolute' favourite... Love it!
www.kennedy-cen...
Also honoured in 2002 were James Earl Jones, James Levine, Chita Rivera and Elizabeth Taylor.
I have been admiring Krauss since she was about 16 - she's a national treasure as well and still perfect in very way, Taylor ain't so bad himself. What a duo.
Except that Taylor made the song!
@@FaithfulServant316 what are you talking about? Paul Simon wrote it. Taylor was singing in tribute; Allison Krauss - one of the best harmonists alive- did what she does well.
James Taylor is great but he didn’t write that.
@@fishhuntadventure nor did he do a very good job until his voice got lost in Alison’s. listen to his intro if you can.
Being a legend in his own rights, JT honoring the Legendary PS. The sheer respect and this legendary tribute says it all.
That's what we like to call real respect he JT doesn't need to be part of this but actually wants to be this is not about money or getting some fame he just totally respects Paul Simon
Totally
Alison a very talented musician herself. All three a gift to our world. ♥️♥️♥️
I love James Taylor and Paul Simon with every fiber of my being, but Alison Kraus.. wow.. Every song she sings she makes it sound like it made just for her to sing in that angelic voice of hers. Hearing her voice literally brings tears of emotion and joy....
FACTS. ;-)
And the way she handle the fiddle is even more awesome ❤
Same!!! Amazing video!
I agree!!! ❤
She could sing the phone book and it would sound amazing
Amo,amo, amo James Taylor. Tive a alegria de assistir um show ao vivo dele 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏memorável, inesquecível
I was waiting for her to play the violin!
Alison is one of the finest voices in the business and a fantastic musician.this is a great version
Except that Taylor made the song!
@@FaithfulServant316 i was talking about alison as a singer and musician. What has that to do with James Taylor
@@jamesryan5436 exactly....it's about James Taylor singing and performing....DUH!!
@@FaithfulServant316 i know its a James Taylor song but my comment was in relation to Alison not James Taylor so what has changed i never mentioned James Taylor
@@FaithfulServant316 If that were true, he wouldn't have been singing the minor harmony.
Clearly, Alison was supposed to be highlighted. The sound crew obviously screwed this one up.
Alison Krauss is so low key and understated and her awesome singing and playing seem effortless. She's amazing.
Yes!
amen
She looks clinically depressed.
Love her vocals. Classic
27 grammys. no one can touch her.
i am 53 and luv the sing - I also lived right off the NJ Turnpike at Grover Cleveland rest area and saw so many faces their that the song Homeward Bound - when they sing about the NJ Turnpike - gets me along with some of the bad storms and winters and Hurricane Sandy which devastated us - Paul is a native and we luv him
Great performance. Allison is such a beautiful woman
Oh wow how awesome they are, loved this.I have listen to James since a teen ager, love Alison Beauiful voice!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
I could listen to Alison Kraus all day. She has the voice of an angel
.
I try to listen to her almost every day. Everything about her is beautiful. Her latents and gifts are unmatched! Her voice. No words to describe 🤗
I believe she is, in fact an angel.
Alison could sing harmony with my lawn mower and be better that anything I hear on the radio today.
WOW! awesome the way they toss the melody and harmony between them. Paul Simon looked a little stunned!
One of my favorite sentences in the English language is, "Ladies and gentlemen, Alison Krauss." That instantly makes any song better.
She is fantastic. Extremely talented. Also gorgeous. At least to me.
You don't know the truth of that statement
I don't know who is more incredible, beautiful Allison of unbelievable James
I LOVE Ms. Krause’s artistry. But I she did not add to this song.
It would have been better to f JT would have kept his mouth shut and let the better singer sing.
Alison came to my small hometown and I did not go see her! Still kicking my self in the.......
Paul Simon's total absorption and appreciation of this performance is a delight to see.
If there are any two voices as perfect as Simon's and Garfunkel's, it has to be Krauss' and Taylor's! What a beautiful blend!
Loved the way it began. I kept thinking they would switch parts in the middle. I kept wanting to hear Aison's voice soar but gently.
It's rather strange seeing Paul hearing them sing his song for him. Must feel odd that they do it so well yet slightly differently. I've always loved the way James sings, it's somehow understated & yet lovely, this is, an excellent blend of voices.
I was noticing how misty Paul's eyes got listening to this. It must be quite a mixture of feelings.
It seems like Alison is the favourite of so many greats in the business to accompany/back up.
The best is the best!
Two of the greatest voices in the music industry singing one of the greatest songwriters song. ❤
Incredibly awesomeness....these 2 are treasures!! As is Paul Simon, of course!!
“Man hears what wants to hear and disregards the rest.” So profound.
I’m sorry, what? 😂
@@gman3451 Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest... what's the problem? It's a fantastic line by an amazing poet. It was only partially quoted but disregard the rest lol
When respect for talent & humanity meant something.
You have such a beautiful voice for harmonizing Alison!
This post left out verses and Alison never played
I will look for the uncut version
I am about to have a 70th birthday and my teen years growing up in a "cold winter" Australian country town gives me many memories of early Simon & G songs. The Boxer, I am a rock etc. Thank you Paul.
We love you frank
@@brianmahogany3216 Gee. Thanks Luther.
I also had the privilege of sitting one row away from Art Garfunkle and Shirley Leverne? In a Sydney movie theatre. Had the fleeting chance to say hello.
It's my 78th birthday today. The music still resonates and moves me.
Compared to you, I'm only a 'lad' (well, okay, I'm actually 64!) but I agree 100% with what you say! Although I preferred the more upbeat Simon and Garfunkel stuff... And, for what its worth, may I wish you a (very?!) belated happy 70th! :-)
Hia frank,im a 65 yr old (gal) lol, living and still loving S&G and i just listened to james taylor singing The Boxer..good but not as great as their version i think..im in Derby UK and its a monday night oct 11th and getting cold here now its autumn but isnt it weird how when u listen to the songs you love from the past you instantly go back there in your mind?keep listening frank,it keeps you sane in this mad fast world we're in now..luv to you over in ozz.sis in law lives in perth but shes still a true geordie..best wishes denise.😉👋💫☺🎤🎼🎶🍺🍺👍
James Taylor is a genius….but Allison Krauss makes all duets perfect. A terrific combo
Hi Karen , How are you doing?
2020 And I’m still Listening On This Song , Anybody Here👍🏻❤️
I am here lol. Was brought into the world hearing Simon & Garfunkel. Adore the “Boxer”; loved hearing James & Allison’s version! ❤️ agree with all.
Me...still love them after all these years...and Paul Simon tearing up..we had the very best music back then..

Me
James Taylor is not a country singer. His songs never sounded like the typical country rhythm.
I am a rocker at heart but I saw James Taylor early on and then was blessed to see Simon and Garfunkel in their Central Park reunion concert. Two of the best shows I ever saw. ❤
Yeah, I saw James at Blossom. Couldn't believe how he delivered so much in his performance. I played in rock concerts, but he left me in the dust.
beautiful song
Maybe this is why Simon and Garfunkel songs are seldom covered. Only they can hit just the right inflection that makes their songs masterpieces.
Listen to the Krauss and Colvin cover.
Have you heard Disturbed version of Sound of Silence? It’s as if the song had been written for them.
What's not to love, two superb artists performing a brilliant song.
Absolutely agree. But I kept waiting for Alison to play her violin (fiddle?), but she just held it in her hand. Did she play it in another song?
The look on Pauls face,,'priceless'.
who hasn't sung the Boxer a million times in my generation? And who hasn't stopped singing it for over 40 years? Anybody I knew (or almost) could sing a decent harmony to it those years... Well, it's good to hear it again, and a song covered by james taylor is anything but trivial... Maybe find a partner to sing it again, once in a blue moon...
"All lies and jests, still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."
I reference this often when debating the state of the world.
Just one example of the truth in plain sight.
I love the truth in it and the entire song as well...it is indeed a lyric that boils the human psyche down to the lowest common denominator.
Alison Krauss is so Underrated, her voice is second to none.
If angels sing among us, Alison Krauss is certainly one. Her voice is unmatched.
Have you heard her singing thesexdreamsxluve with heart? She nails the song.
she is an angel incarnate
James Taylor, what a sweet voice.
If James Hetfield says she has a voice of an angel, you know there's no doubt then.
Hello 👋 Jeanette how are you doing today?
Gosh this is exquisite!
The look on Paul's face when the last verse popped up out of nowhere was like...whaaa th...? where'd the other verses go?? Also, James and Allison looked at each other frequently, but never at the same time. Weird.
Exactly, they had no right to cut that song short; it's a classic, they don't have the right to make up their own version of it. If they're going to sing it they should sing it the right way.
Augudt 2020
Great jou. Thank yoi.
sweet baby james...and sweet baby alison.....just beautiful
My two favourite artists on stage, singing and playing together! And a Paul Simon song at that! Does not get better than this!
The real JT and my Angel of the Opry
Miss Alison Maria Krauss ♡
I can't imagine how many people have memories linked to this song, how many strove to play it when they learned to play a guitar and how many tears and smiles this song must have pulled. Gives me goosebumps every time. God bless Paul Simon and the joy he has brought to so many.
+Chris Smith I'm with you, Chris...and still this rendition brings me to tears-sp. seeing Paul's face throughout!
+GenLeeConcepts I was thinking all of the same things! You know you knocked one out of the park when the writer and performer of a song you're paying stares in rapt attention with misting eyes while you're playing it.
Well said, all.
Agree, Chris. I had just bought a Gibson Hummingbird, as Paul's first album came out. This song is like Duncan, and I was I was
playing my guitar, Lyin' underneath the stars.
Just thankin' the Lord For my fingers, For my fingers...
Yes, Paul has.
Very nice duet!
I would say there is no better compliment...the National treasure standing with his mouth agape in astonishment....shining like a National Guitar....
Beautiful song.
I've been listening to James since I was a teenager, when Fire and Rain came out. I've only gotten to see a few shows and treasure each one! Thank you James, see you next time you're around Tulsa!!
DOESNT GET ANY BETTER THAN FIRE AND RAIN : JAMES HAS BEEN THRU THE FIRE !!!!!!
Beautiful.
Amazing. Two of my favorites singing another of my favorites.
❤ Greatness indeed 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 : Peace ✌ ❤ ✨.
Chris Smith mentioned the many memories attached to this song. Watching the hypnotized look on Paul Simon's face, I couldn't help wondering about the memory he was re-living as he watched this
Paul Simon is indeed a national treasure!
Simply amazing how two inimitable voices can blend so well together.
You must be joking.
I don’t believe they necessarily blended well, but they do sing well together
Yes and both artists enjoy nothing more than a nice big shot of smack with their morning company. So let us follow their example and get high and create art. They have shown the way!
exquisite
The story telling is just so good…. Pure artistry writers and vocals. Takes me far back…. Hope the younger people listen to the story.
Love Alison Krauss. Her beautiful voice reminds me of the open fields of Oklahoma...singing with the great James Taylor, who could ask for anything more???
I have always loved both these artists. Two "National Treasures" to quote Taylor. I surprise myself to say that I prefer another rendition of "The Boxer" by Alison Krauss. I think her amazing harmonies are better with other artists. Two Great Ones, to be sure.

@@cjpreach Do you mean the version where she sings vocals, with Shawn Colvin and Jerry Douglas backing up with guitar and steel guitar? -Oh wait, you do; I see you posted a link to the performance. Yes, it's better in my opinion.
james taylor needs to give it up. i prefer dylan!
@@Robin-zb8qy Slow Train Comin. My fave Dylan song is "When He Returns." Love it.
James Taylor - yumm. a Beautiful rendtion. the bad part - this song as the title "the Boxer" indicates, lacts - punch.
This was always one of my favorite S & G songs...so beautiful. And JT and Alison are perfect on this.
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Paul is moved. The love James offers him is palpable.
You have to feel a bit sorry for anyone who sings a duet with Alison Krause. She leaves everyone in the dust. What a beautiful voice she has.
Her's and Robert Plant's voices blended quite nicely.
And, if you watch, she has tremendous respect for anyone on stage with her. Never a diva.
music is for everyone to enjoy, not a competition at all
you make a false comparison.. Krauss is Crystalline... Taylor is Taylor...
She's very good I've always liked her but Vince Gill makes her and everybody else lacking
Don’t know why Allison Krause never received the high recognition she so richly deserves? 🥴
Well, Miss Krauss has 27 Grammys -- third-highest total in history. That's pretty high recognition.
Mark Rea Very true...but she’s still not recognized by most people...her name is not a ‘household word’ so to speak.
I waited until Allison would play her violin. 😭😭😭
Everyone shitting on james for not being comparable to allison or simon or art as far as singing should put out their version. Better for a person to sing and participate in music even if they arent better than the best. I think its a beautiful version by both allison and james taylor
My life long obsession with music started before I was even old enough to speak coherently back in 1974 with 2 albums I asked my Grandma to play non stop while I stared at the record sleeves lying on the floor in front of our big cabinet stereo. I was all of 5 yrs old. Simon & Garfunkel’s greatest hits was one of them. Kris Kristofferson Silver Tongue Devil was the other. Thank you, Grandma. May she Rest In Peace ❤️
Why is he running? We can wait for James Taylor.
I am immersed in pleasure while listening to their exquisite performance .
From Tokyo in Japan
No one sings this better than Simon and Garfunkel. They were great
The song is good, but only by Simon and Garfunkel. James Taylors special is the "handy man"
Paul Simon is a true American treasure. We have been so lucky to live with such greatness
Touching and beautiful, my favorite song by those two amazing writers performers
She has the voice of an angel..james is fabulous! ❤️
Hello Elise, how are you doing?
Except that Taylor made the song!
I've got more albums by these two greats than any other artists. Individually of course.
I kept waiting for Alison to play the fiddle!
She also performed this song - the full song, not the shortened version heard here - with Shawn Colvin and Jerry Douglas, and she does play a bit of fiddle on it. That version is even more heavenly than this one, if you can believe it...well worth looking up!
Alison Krauss brings harmony and beauty to whatever she sings and whoever she sings with. She has an amazing voice and doesnt look half bad either 🙂
Neil Johnson While this may be true, she was assigned the MELODY in this performance and was overwhelmed by JT’s harmony part. I blame the person manning the mixer.
One of the most beautiful woman in the world is Alison Krause
Just look at Paul as he looks at them....no condescending bullshit, ..just pure appreciation and admiration....he is just the best so underrated as a songwriter
I believe he is looking at them shocked at how bad it is.
@@ceebee6694 HA you're right!
You must be seeing something different than me. He didn't seem pretty much expressionless the whole performance. Almost like...so what.
We think these icons will live forever, and in one way they will. Talent like this is treasured.
James Taylor and Alison Krauss are two of my favorite singers. Three, if I count Mr Paul Simon.
I've always love Alison Krauss, she's got an amazing voice, she sings like an ANGEL 👼James has an amazing voice too, their voices sounds very good together, great job.🤗💖🤗💖👋👋👍👍😍
Except that Taylor made the song!
To hear this song.. Brings back memories of my young life and all my experiences of my youth...
When Paul sung with Art, he sung in a flat tone often which allowed Art's beautiful voice to shine through, much like Allison!
guvlud20 cool!
flat? or that they sang in the lower harmony? I don't think you can ever accuse AK of singing flat
Allison's voice when she is singing the melody is drowned out by James' harmony. The mixer should have worked more on the sound on that one. Beautiful
@staircase2 actually they're not consistently singing the same part, the mark of genuine musician. Same could be said of The Andrews Sisters
I think the issue is that Alisons too quiet (FFS!)
That's why I think Paul looked uncomfortable, you can tell when a singer/song writer is amazed or happy with how somebody interprets his song
@@peteharry351 the audio mixing at this level of performances was not good. It's an easy move of the sliders on the mixing board to level out their voices to get the proper balance of lead and harmony. Poor job by the sound engineer...
It feels to me like James is a bit off his game here. You can tell that he's really nervous performing Paul's song for him. Someone said that Alison is too quiet, but I think that James is a bit too loud.
Allison Krause is sublime. Always.
Taylor sang differently and brilliantly, singing in third voice to soften even more angelic soprano alison... fatástico ... when I grow up. I want to be able to sing well then... a thousand stars for then ;-)
Made for TV edit at 2:04 - explains why it's so short. SHAME on the producers for keeping this from the television audience. NO WAY they would've chopped up the song in front of Paul like the video suggests. And this explains why we don't get to hear her play the instrument.
This song reminds me of when I lived in Rome so many years ago. Riding around on my Italian boyfriends moped singing this song at the top our voices - bitter sweet memories x
Hello 👋 Clare. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl

The violin solo by Allison was ephemeral ;)
First, what solo?! Second, it's a fiddle!
Gawd! 2 of my favorites of all time!!!! Isn't this great!
As blurry as my mind, as clear as glacial ice, as sad as Aleppo, as pure as Himalayan air.
What a load of ignorant comments posted here, this is Allison and James with their own spin on this song, not S and G.I suggest you have your equipment checked and then your ears.Yes,they are reading lyrics,SO WHAT ? Its obvious that there are many on this site who think they are clever with their comments, ……….. NO IGNORANT is the real description Nothing wrong with Paul`s reaction, nothing whatsoever, merely listening intently to the performance.
They could have had the respect for someone such as Paul Simon to learn the words. For Christs sake, one of the most talented men in music?
Barry Barry Yeh! Long time ago, Jimmy Dean on his own TV show forgot the words to his own song “Big John”! Song writers and singers are just entertainers, not Gods. 🙃
And you too daisy
daisy may c£
It wasn't a great rendition of the song, that's the truth of it. It didn't suit Taylor's voice, the guitar picking is one of the highlights of the song, and he chose to strum it. Also it did nothing to highlight Alison's normally beautiful voice.
Was that Quest Love on the drum kit?????
Beautiful cover, but they need to bring up Alison in the mix. James is mostly singing a strong descant which sounds great under the melody not over it.
.
Thank you so much. Finally someone with technical knowledge of music has explained what's going on. If the sound balance had been right, James' descant would have been quieter than the melody. I love learning this kind of thing. Now I'm going to look up "descant." :)
For me it seems like James wanted to sing alone. He didn't tune his to hers.
i love them all but holy cow were they late for a train? way too fast and paul looked baffled.
Way too fast compared to what??? The original version is actually a tad faster....probably by about 4-5 beats per minute or so. IMO Paul had a look of enjoyment & reminiscence,...not baffled.
To put it bluntly, James screwed up seemingly unaware of the fact. Feel sorry for AK.
I was born in 1968. I figured out what a gem this song was about a year ago. What a beautiful tribute.
Alison Krauss is what happens when you take all the best things in the world and make a person out of them.
Just a remarkable talent.
Yes
Wow
Allison has a beautiful voice, she is able to sing with such a range of different singers.
