Guys -- Carl Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who developed Jungian psychology in the first half of the 20th century.12 His theory suggested that archetypes were universal patterns and images that are part of the collective unconscious. Jung believed that we inherit these archetypes much like we inherit instinctive patterns of behavior.3 Jungian psychotherapy is a thorough, analytical approach to talk therapy that seeks to bring balance and union between the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. Jung believed that the unconscious is a source of wisdom and guidance that can help encourage psychological growth.2 He created some of the best-known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex, and extraversion and introversion.4 Jung argued that humans deal with the reality of the shadow in four ways: denial, projection, integration, and transmutation. During individuation, the individual becomes more attentive to dreams, increases their psychic awareness, explores the world of religion and spirituality, and questions the assumptions of societal norms.
For me this song refers to Carl Jung’s interpretation on the shadow self. Also the evolution of man, it can have many meanings.
🤟
one of the best parts of Tool to me is how subjective it can be at times infinite possibilities.
It is and then sprinkled in with Melchizedek.
Is for everyone, not only for you
Strange, your “for you” explanation seems to match EXACTLY with tools actual inspiration for the song… in precise technical detail.
The song is about evolving into a higher state of consciousness. As a species we are currently in a chaotic state. We currently have 44 and 2 chromosomes. The reference is to us evolving into a symbiotic state, as a species, with 46 and 2 chromosomes.
46 and 2 chromosome is an ape
human chromosome 2 is a fusion of two ape chromosomes plus we have a mutation of the myh 16 gene that removed the large cranial masticatory muscles that apes have and allowed our cranial cavity to expand with a large more specialized brain.
we are fucked up apes
Maynard typically has more than 2 meanings for each song he writes, but here it’s generally a reference to Carl Jung, personally growth and challenging yourself, and evolving. Lots of third eye, intuiting, self-reflection stuff.
Maynard is a very intelligent individual and his lyrics are very deep. Also, he’s an Army veteran.
intelligent and US vet in one set...? find the fault... perhaps he was as soldier so invisible like in their live shows...
@@seelenwinter6662 He went to West Point and I believe graduated with honors.
This is a song you listen to before you go to war… with yourself. That ending though… makes you want to run straight through a wall.
It's no coincidence that this song had its debut on the same week that the Kool-Aid guy made his first appearance.
46&2 represent the next spiritual and physical evolutionary step for humanity. We are currently 44&2 = a disharmonus collective. It refers to our chromosomes that make up our identity. That's why he says .........46&2 are just a head of me. Our new reality consisting of a higher Frequency Vibration Sound and Light is where we are going. Thank you for letting us listen to this with you
Its all in the mix. Most of TOOL's songs seem to place Maynards vocals right in the middle if not the back of the mix. It can be difficult to hear the vocals clearly at first. It is however very much worth it to take the deep dive.
Flawd you're totally not wrong about it almost being rap. His cadences and rhythmic devices are often mentioned as being unique or different but when you recited the lyric about the shadow that was a freaking bar to behold.
Just because something reminds you off rap, doesn't make it "almost rap".
I've listened to this song 1000s of times and it's never been this quite
Yeah that recording sounded off.
SNEEZING ON CUE AT THE END then the "BLESS YOU" .....PERFECT😅
8:23 Bless you
More Tool, pretty please!
Never expected to see Tool on this channel. Love how u were just like ‘Bro what’s going on’…. Welcome to Tool ;) enjoy the ride
Self inflection. Accepting all your bad traits along with your good traits. BTW you guys are awesome. Love the split screen and audio in dialed in.
1:34 sneezes accenting Danny's electric pad work in the left speaker quite nicely :D
Whooooo! You 8n for a musical awakening. Can't wait!
love your reactions man, just found this channel. you guys are for sure going to blow up
🔥 love me some Tool! Perfect Circle has some good songs too. Maynard is in both bands.
do you like Puscifer
@@williamparrish9954 haven’t listed to them. Will have to check it out.
He's the lead singer of both of those bands and Puscifer also.
@@10SecondZ06 I knew Maynard was the lead singer of both Tool and Perfect Circle, just hadn’t heard of Puscifer.
@@malesavandyke8422Haven’t heard of Puscifer? Hold on to your testosterone… go!
That on-beat sneeze was a good addition, they should've tracked one in for the master.
Tool is a genre in and of itself, and is a journey, an experience, if you will. Please, please, please check out the drum cam video of Danny Carey of the song Pneuma. He is, quite possibly, the best currently living drummer.
Neil Pert, Danny Carey, David Lombardo. Three of the best drummers of my lifetime. Also, Lars Ulrich is very underrated, being in a band of great guitars.
@@BBaker916I think Jojo Mayer deserves a spot on that list.
The entire Ænima album is amazing, if you liked this song good chance you’ll enjoy the whole album.
This song is literally about evolving to a higher level of existence
Man, I just flashed back to my Sr. Year of high school! Haven't heard this forever!
it's the description of the perspective stretch of one's own shadow....proverbially the reach towards enlightenment!
Tool purposely puts the vocal low in the mix to let the music shine and uses his voice as a equal instrument. Tool songs are deep and yes this is reference to Carl Jungs work about integrating your dark side into who you are in the world.
I really like how you guys paid attention to the song. Obviously you never mentioned the band (the drummer in particular). These dudes make masterpieces in music
You should try kids cover by O/Keefe foundation. Kids doing it dude!
For real! I commented the same thing. Are you aware that the singer, and a few other members in the cover video, later created a band called 'Saving Escape' and they are making current original music? It's good. I suggest you checkout their original song 'Get Mine'. It's pretty freakin' awesome! I can hear the Zeppelin, Tool, and the White Stripes influences and I love it
More Tool guys 🔥
Let’s Gooooooooooo!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yes !!! Finally!
Dude, I'm so glad you reacted to this song, one of my favorite songs! I HIGHLY suggest that you react to the Video of kids covering this song. They play all the instruments and a young teenage girl crushes the lyrics. They all crush it but the drumming and videography is outstanding. The kids in the video are from a music class. A few of them, including the singer, later formed a band call 'Saving Escape' and they are making original music now, I bought the album. The cover video is posted by O'Keefe Music Foundation and the video name is "Kids Cover 46 and 2 by Tool / O'Keefe Music Foundation".
I do not care for the child version. It feels like the girl is too young to understand what she is saying.
@pauljeffers1494 I disagree about that. When I was 13, I was drinking, drugging, and having sex (with girls my age). Why would it matter if they understood the lyrics? That's a rediculas statement. You probably barely grasp the lyrics as an adult. Purely ignorant, close-minded train of thought. And you're a Tool fan? Inconceivable!
@@pauljeffers1494 Yeah I feel the same way, but the technical performance was good and arrangement not too bad either, so I still enjoyed it.
Carl Jung theorized that there is a Shadow subconscious and a Light conscious, this is him opening himself to both. 46&2 is a reference to the chromosomal pattern that makes us human.
The next step of evolution would likely bring about a cosmic conscious where the chromosome count would be 48, or 46 & 2. The songs heavy focus on 'shadow' is derived from Carl Jung's theories. The shadow is basically everything about that is unseen that you are uncomfortable with or hate.
12:05 right lol. Tool released this before the internet and now look at it.
it is just becoming something new
When I listen to Tool
I absolutely hear the music
Which makes me want to read and understand the lyrics!
These 4 men are masters at their craft😊 mm stepping into a higher form of being
Potentially over time humans may mutate and evolve into something else……..46&2
Have a feeling it's already in the works. They're able to pick & choose how something, including children, have better qualities & less issues. People seem to forget about China's Chimera embryos. Then what? AI sees us as out of control & the process starts over again. Is AI actually what we know as God? Has it always been there or did we create it.
Sorry. I know I'm strange.
😇✌️
YAAAAS!! More Tool!!!
Random people: 'so lets listen to this music, whats it called? tool? Oh!' ( a few moments later ) (third eye opens) (spiritual transformation) (birth of new creature)
This is not a religion. But it should be. Just like 'Heilung'.
It's all about evolving.
Not sure why alot of people can’t hear the lyrics/vocals in the main sections of TOOL songs? There are parts of songs where MJK is whispering or speaking the lyrics which can be hard to hear so I get that but the body of the song I hear him clearly and don’t have issues understanding what he’s saying. I believe I have learned how to listen to TOOL songs and I’m used to MJKs vocals blending in as almost another instrument and that’s where I believed people run into issues hearing the vocals that blend so well with the music.
Give you three more TOOL songs to try, Vicarious, Right in Two, and Invincible. This is a mere sample of their diverse catalog
bruh.. right in two... soo true and good
Maynard chose to put his vocals behind the instruments.
Bless you
Enjoy the intelligence involved. All about self ego, the shadow self, it's deep. Maynard, the vocalist, is crazy deep in his lyrics.
Reading Tool lyrics is how you understand. It's another level.
Vocals are done low on purpose, it’s the shadow.
Also, Maynard adds a shadow vowel when he sings shadow. If you notice he adds an a sound to the end of it.
One of my favorite reactors reacting to my favorite band Tool🔥🔥🔥
Evolución
Carl Jung's shadow work. It's about evolving.
Quick layman explanation of the song (at least my interpretation). First "The Shadow". Very basically, Karl Jung's theorized that our mind was divided in several parts, one being the Shadow, the place where our fears, insecurities and traumas reside. Now, the songs talks about evolution (there are many references to snakes shedding skin) and basically it says that to change, to evolve you have to face your Shadow, acknowledge it, recognize it, assume it and integrate it into who you are. Now, the forty-six & 2 part. Our cells are composed of 46 chromosomes, containing our whole DNA. Those 46 chromosomes are organized in pairings, so 23. Now there is a pairing that is special because it's the one that determine our biological gender, it's the pairing XX for women and XY for men. When a biologist speaks of 44+2 instead of 46, the "+2" refers to that special pairing. So in the song, the narrator says "forty-six & 2" just ahead of me. I don't think it's a direct reference to biological evolution (going from 44+2 to 46+2), but I think he uses this representation of biological evolution as a metaphor for psychological, mental and ethical evolution.
- and the year was 1996 as the album (AEnima)
Proverbs 25:28 “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls.”
its about using 369 which we all have to drop shadows from 3 to 6 to 9
I get the feeling of it is to do with opening your 3rd eye and stepping through it too let go of control, and music is his gift to us
🔥🔥🔥
Is all about understanding all one’s potential, and evolving through the shadow as outlined by Carl Jung. Dr. Peterson also lectures on the principle of the shadow.
- and the tempest of the Tool
The “whispering” is on purpose. It’s meant to be subtle/subliminal
Your shadow is your unconsious. It makes you do things you don't even know. This is the way to enlightenment. See whats in your darkness and then try to grow beyond it
you hear it when you know it. it's not a song that you take with you for the rest of your life the first time you encounter it. but it is a song that you take with you for the rest of your life... like the rest of their music.
Watch the produced lyric version. They explain it. Great to see you guys doing TOOL.
THOSE DRUMS ARE OFF THE HOOK!!!!!
La sombra es lo que dejas
Tool is just; different!
🤘🏻🌀
You guys need to check out the live drum cam for their song Pnuema.
Its about DNA and metamorphosis (ascension)
The vocals being mixed low is an artistic choice, vocals part of the song instead of over the instrumentals, and despite all the commenters who believe this is about Carl Jung, it's not, it's about evolution, it's the count of chromosomes and autosomes of a potentially evolutionary next step that will be more aligned with sacred geometry per Drunvalo Melchizedek.
You realize that it's possible for it to be about both of those, right? The Shadow is clearly referring to the Jungian concept of the shadow. The song is about integrating the parts he hides so he can move forward and become more.
The shadow is the real you. We create an ego. A projection of what other people see but not who we really are.
FLAWDSKWAD ❤❤❤❤
Carl Jung's Shadow theory explains it quite well, would love to see yall take Right In Two for a spin!
Right In Two is great......👍
O'Keefe Music Foundation has a kids covering 46&2and its awesome. I recommend watching it while the original version is fresh in your head. U wont be disappointed!

@@10SecondZ06 yes, I knew about her band, but never heard any of their music. Thanks for the recommendations!
tool is goat.
sleep token-- take me back to eden. There's a part in the middle of the song that i think that you guys would really enjoy
A lot of the lyrical sources on this album came from a book written by Bob Frissel titled "Nothing in this Book is True, But It's Exactly How Things Are." And aren't taken as serious by Maynard and Tool as they are the fans :)
Danny Carey is an animal on percussion!!!!
It's Jungian symbolism, JBP's specialty.
Theyre all deep
Tool makes you smarter. First you just like the song, then you have to do research to figure out what the lyrics mean. 😜
It i about chromosones. From aboriginal to modern to what comes next.....46 and 2
It's referencing the next stage of evolution for human beings as we are not the final form.
Check out Tool's Jambi & Lateralus
To best understand Tool, you need to think of each song as an episode in a series, where the album is a season.
The term you're looking for is Maynard's "phrasing."
You should check these kids covering from O'Keefe foundation .
A popular belief is that the song title refers to an idea first conceived by Carl Jung. But this seems in error as no relevant citations to Jung on such an idea seem to be available. Such an idea is further attributed to Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a disharmonious state.[3][4] The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes, according to Melchizedek.
Additionally, it may refer to the desire to experience change through the "shadow", an idea that represents the parts of one's psyche, and identity that one hates, fears and represses; this exists as a recurring theme in the work of Carl Jung.[5]
No quiero dar la carga
Pero es la evolución.
Cuántos cromosomas tienes?❤
Dna
The vocal is low in the mix on purpose. There are times when Maynard likes to see himself as more of an instrument.
That said, always always always pull up the lyrics-the better to hear as well as understand.
And yet we are called intellectually snobby.
46 and 2 has something to do with chromosomes.
This is why I live tool reactions, look at you trying to figure this out….
The human body is 46 and one chromosomes 46 and two, is an extra chromosome, which is stepping into the new evolution of men
Oh damn I missed this one! This was the song Ive been waiting for you to play lol ugh! Oh well at least I got to be there for the Kids covering this song from the Okeefe Music Foundation for Kids. Flawd and Meaux should look into Carl Jung's Shadow theory! lol. Its a crazy concept about how we can evolve into the next higher state of consciousness! Whatever that is? Carl theorized that to be able to reach this next higher state that we would have to conquer our shadow selvesl Our Alter Egos. The voice in our heads that we all have that we push down deep within our conscious minds never to see light of day. Usually if they do manifest out into the open its never a good thing. The shadow is basically the voice in Ren's head that he was battling in Hi Ren. That was Rens Shadow self! The Pig Mask I believe is his shadow self! Thats just my opinion on the Pig Mask! Jordan Peterson also talks about shadow work in lectures, but hes very clear to everyone that they should never just try and do this. It could potentially land you in the nut house driving you crazy! Or lead you to do some very bad dark actions that you cant go back on once you do. Myself I dont want to play god Ill wait for gods plan on when we evolve. I know I got some dark twisted scary shit suppressed down in my shadow that I never need to bring up lol Im good with pushing them down farther!
But 46 & 2 refers to the human chromosomes! Right now we have 44 Chromosomes and 2 X, Y for male and female genders. But when we evolve and reach the next level will that change our chromosomes from 44 to 46 & 2?? It might although its just a guess based on if we go backwards as we evolved . We know for a fact right now, there are tribes in the bush of Australia that have never left the bush. They dont know technology, they dont know what a cell phone is, or computers, or internet. They dont know that every individual person has their own conscious even. They believe everything is connected as one! Like all humans, animals, mother nature, the earth, stars, moon, and sun are all one collective conscious in unity together! These Aboriginals have 2 less chromosomes than all the rest of us, "the modern world". Which I am pretty sure that if one of us, who lives in "the modern world", are short 2 chromosomes, we would be diagnosed as mentally challenged, or a special needs person. Im not 100% sure on that though. But Yea its a fun theory to dive into and learn about but I would never attempt to actually conquer and embrace my shadow I rather let Gods plan play its coarse and we are all here in this stage of the Earth/Universes evolvement for a reason I believe. Playing God is a bad Idea!
Look into Carl Jung to learn about your shadow.
For all those who are applying their lyrics solely to Jungian philosophies and such, there is a video out there that provides not only the lyrics but the explanation to them. These involve certain philosophies but the main point is 46 & 2. These are the chromosomal ratios that separate some people from others and that express themselves over time. There are 44 & 2s and 42 & 2s, each seeing the world in fundamentally different ways. What he seems to be singing about is his experiencing the transition from one to another and the revelations revealed.
I always wondered before this why they didn't just call it "Forty-eight."
