  • The drive from Portland to Los Angeles is almost 1,000 miles and it goes through most of California and Oregon. While most people do the drive as fast as possible, my dad and I decided to make an adventure out of it and stop at tons of different places. We spent 3 days driving the route, hiked to waterfalls, ate amazing food and even saw tule elk. Check out the video for our full road trip and let me know what your favorite stop is in the comments.

I really love that you did this trip in the gloomy rain. Half of the experience in Oregon is going to an overlook, having the clouds block it all out and promising yourself to return on a clearer day. 🙂

This was really fun. I am from LA, moved to Eugene in the late 80s, and have been in Portland now for the past 23 years. I got married at Skinner's Butte Park. Not at the top, but the park is also gorgeous. I used to live 5 minutes from Pip's! I also painted one of the murals in Springfield in 1993. It's the one behind the library.

As you produce more videos, they are ever more balanced, smoother transitions, cool/unique/interesting, professional, and....enjoyable. The father son, son father relationship aspect is unmatched in the travel blog world. I wouldn't be surprised if a network or film documentary picks you two up one day. Patience prevails.

I have really enjoyed so many of your videos, especially the ones with Pops, but this one was particularly special. I missed that you had twins, so a big congratulations! And congratulations on getting your doctorate! That is very impressive.
I wanted to thank you for featuring this stretch of I-5. We will be driving from Sacramento into Oregon soon, so this gave me some ideas for stops. I am especially excited about the cheese recommendation. It was also fun to see places I have been, such as Ashland and Mt. Shasta, but in the winter. I didn’t know Ashland was so beautifully decorated for Christmas.
I have driven from Sacramento to LA dozens of times, so it was also nice to know I haven’t been missing too much on that drive.
I do have one comment about Bravo Farms. While it is a great stop when it isn’t crowded, it is a total madhouse during any holiday weekend. If you stop at such times, it is hard even getting in and out of the parking lots around there because of the terrible traffic flow. Unfortunately, when they built Bravo Farms, they did not plan for the traffic congestion it would cause. Consequently, I will no longer stop there during a holiday weekend.
I have stopped at Harris Ranch many times, even on holiday weekends. It is an easier stop.
Again, congratulations and thanks for this and all of your vlog!

Neat hidden thing about Sundial bridge are the cliff swallows building mud nests under the glass walkway, you can see into the nest and even see hatchlings or eggs.. we saw some Memorial Day wkend few years ago, worried about the heat (103F+)! The Turtle Bay museum & garden was great for kids and just to cool off and learn about the dam & nature.

Never take this time with Dad for granted. Like I see sons having fun with their dad, being treated as a friend just having fun, and it seems like a fake TV show. I am sure a lot of people feel the same way. Seems like everyone I know, myself included, have fathers who have zero love of life, and everything is either an "I'm your dad, not your buddy" kinda feel or feels more like a chore than a pleasure. I don't know many people who just want to hang out with their dad and especially do things with them like they would a friend. That is special (unfortunately) and you have something there so spend all that time you can!

Another awesome Roadtrip video with Pops Josh… and very representative of I-5 along this way. You stopped at several of our favorite spots and introduced us to a couple new ones. Glad you made it to Archive Coffee this time. Eugene is one of our favorite stops. Cornbread Cafe for vegan southern comfort food was also on Drive-ins, Diners and Dives and Tacovore for tacos of course. Thanks for pointing out the Simpsons-Springfield connection. I did not know that. Will definitely have to check Rogue Creamery is a threefer for us as the winery-David Leger and the chocolate shop are equally wonderful. Will have to check out the walk-behind waterfall next time we are by. Lived in Sacramento for 40 years so all familiar. Walked by the Capitol for many years on the way to work. You should consider taking the Underground Sacramento history tour similar to its more famous cousin Underground Seattle tour. As a vegetarian not a fan of Harris Ranch with its humongous stockyard adjacent to the restaurant- too close a connection from hoof to mouth. Thanks for bringing us along.

Another awesome video Josh and Pops, loved it. You guys definitely pick the best places to eat, always!!! You saw so many great spots. I’m really hoping I can get back over there again soon, it’s a long way from Perth Western Australia with a family of four.
It’s been a little while since I’ve had time to properly watch your channel so I’ve about three or four videos to watch which I’m looking forward to. I noticed one of your videos is Pinnacles National Park. One of Western Australia’s most famous places to visit is Pinnacles Desert National Park (Nambung National Park) I invite you to Google pictures of it. As always in ultra professional travel video that’s also very entertaining and very down to earth. You’re always welcome to visit Perth and Western Australia, I’d love to help if you do. Great stuff Josh and Pops.

Essentially next door to Rogue Creamery is Lillie Belle Chocolates. Fantastic! In Ashland Alchemy Restaurant in Winchester Inn bed and breakfast used to have an AMAZING “Victorian” Christmas Eve dinner. I don’t know if they are still doing that.

Between Clearlake and Yuba on Hwy 20 there are a Lot Of Elk...that occasionally decide the entire heard must cross the highway! Very odd!

Seeing Grants Pass reminded me the President Grant ($50 dollar bill guy) was stationed in Eureka, Ca at fort Humboldt before he was sent east to command in the civil war. Rumor is that he would often drink while singing and being rowed around Humboldt bay by his valet. Fort Humboldt in Eureka is totally restored and you can tour it, if you want. Great video as usual Josh and Pops right on guys!

I dunno. That raininess seems perfect for Oregon!
Also, this was a missed opportunity to get can of Shasta in your 3 Shastas shot 😆
